Evolution of Chris Osgood

“When you’re young, you tend to take things too personal, and it’s really not. You tend to exaggerate things,” Osgood told ESPN.com on the eve of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals, with Detroit holding a 3-1 series lead over Pittsburgh. “People write stuff, all people have different jobs when you’re in the finals and in the playoffs.
“You just have to have fun with it. I enjoy talking to the media more and talking to people, getting to know more people. Just have more fun with it because it’s not personal. Just everybody’s doing their job. It’s fun. ... It’s when I get on the ice, it’s just my time.”
The 35-year-old native of Peace River, Alberta, is not the same goaltender he was 10 years ago, when he helped Detroit win a Stanley Cup but carried a rather sizable chip on his shoulder. But who among us can claim to be the same person now as a decade ago?

Q. Henrik, can you describe just in general your defense tonight and specifically your defense on the five‑on‑three?
HENRIK ZETTERBERG: That was the one thing we wanted to do a little better today. We want to have a little bit more poise in our own end.
We wanted to make some good decisions down there. I think we did. They got opportunity to tie up the game with the five‑on‑three in the end there.
We played good. We tried to keep them outside and tried to be in the shooting lanes. And when they got a puck through, Ozzie made a save.

Hasek Being a Good Teammate

Dominik Hasek will enter the Hall in his very first year of eligibility. But right now, he’s been reduced to Hall of Fame backup.
“That’s the way it is,” Hasek said. “It’s definitely disappointing, especially because I feel well. Like I’ve said many times, I’m ready to go any time. But the team is playing very well, we’re winning. Ozzie is doing a great job for us. So I understand the situation. I wish to be there but the coaches feel they better go with Ozzie.”
And that’s a pure, honest sentiment from the 43-year-old Czech star. It’s eating him up inside not to be in goal right now. But he also has tremendous respect for his goalie partner and has been nothing but the good teammate since losing his starting job 26 minutes into Game 4 of the opening round in Nashville.

Q. Chris, this week all your teammates and coaches have been saying that your ability to bounce back from losses or bad goals and things like that is really one of your strengths. How do you do that so easily, and last night is a game that’s easier or tougher to get past?
CHRIS OSGOOD: It’s over. We didn’t come into the series thinking we were going to win four straight. We were hoping to. But to say we expected it to be a hard series would be right on. Just play the game tomorrow. I mean, the next day, just keep doing the same thing as I’ve been doing. That’s about it. I haven’t really put any thought into last night, this morning.
I thought it was a real good game. Both teams played real well, and somebody has to win and lose every night. We were on the short end last night.
Q. If I could get you both to comment on this. Mike Babcock came in this morning, the morning after a loss, jovial with the media and joking. Can you talk about the way he kind of sets the mood for the team and kind of understands when to go at you and when to give you your space and how his feelings for that kind of thing?

And he’ll be the first to tell you that.
“I’m just a quiet guy. I don’t like bragging about myself. Save that for another day,” said the Detroit goaltender, who, if he keeps making all the saves, won’t have a lot more days to wait this postseason.

Osgood Just Wins

Chris Osgood has been labelled the worst goaltender to ever win a Stanley Cup.
Now, he could conceivably be the worst to ever win two.
Before we all get all weepy over Osgood’s legacy, or suggest he’s been unfairly criticized and evaluated over the course of his career, a little historical review would be in order.

Playoff Justice

This is NHL playoff justice. Anything short of an ax-murder is likely to be ignored. But don’t blame the current dispenser of justice, Colin Campbell. It has always been this way.
There has been the occasional exception. When Gary Bettman was in the first few months of his regime, he didn’t understand hockey tradition very well (insert your own cheap shot here) and seeing Dale Hunter deliver a cross-check to Pierre Turgeon after a goal, decided that Hunter had earned himself a 21-game suspension.
But since then, the NHL has followed a firm policy. First of all, suspensions, when they occur, are much shorter than they would be for a similar incident in the regular season. Secondly, every effort is made to keep the stars in the game.
At one time, the league used to defer playoff suspensions. One of the more notorious examples was the vicious slash that Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall delivered to Edmonton’s Kent Nilsson in the 1987 Stanley Cup finals.

No Suspensions For Ribeiro & Osgood

The league just confirmed.
There are some fines involved, but both Ribeiro and Osgood are good to go for Game 3.
That’s important for the Stars, particularly if Lehtinen is hurt and can’t play.
Ribeiro was quite feisty today, so it will be interesting if he transfers that energy to the ice.

All Osgood Does Is Win

Chris Osgood doesn’t have the flash of Detroit teammate Dominik Hasek. He’s not a spectacular puck-handler like Dallas’ Marty Turco, his rival in the Western Conference Finals. He’s a solid goaltender who doesn’t do anything extraordinarily well.
Except win.
Few goaltenders in any era can match Osgood when it comes to winning games. He was 27-9-4 during the regular season while splitting time with Hasek, and improved to 8-0 during the playoffs with a 2-1 victory over the Stars Saturday night in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.

Q. Chris, 6?0 an incredible run here in the playoffs. Where do you point the finger? Why have you had such success?
CHRIS OSGOOD: In two parts I’ll answer. Personally, just doing the right things in practice with Jim Bedard and staying ready. Even when I wasn’t playing, I felt confident, even before I went in that I could do the job. Just being ready so I wasn’t standing there doubting myself whatsoever.

Osgood Rebuilds His Game

Windsor native Stan Matwijiw operates the Bandits Goalie School in Novi, Mich., and back in 2004, was charged with the task of deconstructing Osgood.
It proved to be a reclamation project of Humpty Dumpty-like proportions.
“I got a call from Chris the second week of August the summer before the (2004-05) lockout,” Matwijiw recalled. “When he first came to me, I was a little unsure about what he was looking for.
“This was an NHL goalie with 11 years of experience. I didn’t know whether he was just looking to fine-tune some things, so we talked about it. To my surprise, he said, ‘I want you to completely tear my game apart and rebuild it.”

Osgood Remains Low-Keyed

Chris Chelios is buddies with Hollywood actors, Henrik Zetterberg is dating a Swedish pop star and Darren McCarty used to have a red Mohawk and front a punk band. But everything about 5-foot-10 netminder from Peace River, Alta., is purposefully low-key.
From his family-friendly SUV to his post-hockey dream job as a bullpen catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Osgood would rather be in the shadows than the spotlight. Perhaps that is why, despite putting up Hall of Fame-worthy numbers, the 14-year veteran is often considered to be a career backup rather than one of the game’s elite.
“Some guys crave the attention, love to be always noticed when they go out and do certain things,” said Osgood. “I don’t really like that. I just want to go about my business and play.”

Ozzie Comes Up Big

In the roiling cauldron that was Joe Louis Arena, where fans were alternating covering their eyes or leaping to their feet, Detroit goalie Chris Osgood was oblivious to the stress.
His so-called fun peaked with 8.4 seconds left in game when John-Michael Liles had the game on his stick and 20,066 fans had their hearts in their mouths.
However, Osgood plucked the puck and a victory out of mid-air to give the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Thursday in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal at Joe Louis Arena.

Wings Make Goalie Change

Dominik Hasek is out, and Chris Osgood is in.
Hasek said Thursday that Red Wings coach Mike Babcock told him Osgood will start Game 5 against the Nashville Predators, who won two straight at home to even the first-round series 2-all.

Asked whether Osgood will be the Red Wings’ netminder for the remainder of the playoffs, coach Mike Babcock laughed and said, “Just win baby.”

They Used To Be Backups

It’s interesting to see what has happened this week to Manny Legace and Chris Osgood, a couple of goalies the Detroit Red Wings thought were nothing more than back-ups not long ago.
Legace was named the league’s No. 1 star for the week ending Jan. 6. The St. Louis Blues’ No. 1 man in the net has pretty much been spot on all season, despite playing at less than 100 percent.
Osgood has played so well that not only has he emerged as the go-to guy in Detroit, but the Red Wings awarded the 35-year-old with a three-year contract extension on Wednesday.
Holy Hasek, what’s going on here?

Chris Osgood, it appears, has supplanted Dominik Hasek as the No. 1 goalie in Motown, though the 42-year-old Hasek won’t concede as much.
“There are 60 games left and I know the way I practise and the way I see the puck, I know I’ll play better,” Hasek said. “I want to see more determination out of myself. I haven’t done my job.”

No Change Needed For Red Wings

Hasek described his play after Tuesday’s loss in St. Louis as “not being able to get in the game.” He doesn’t see action for minutes, then lets in a quickie ... which is another way to say that he’s playing like a No. 2 goalie. Osgood plays behind the same tight defense and manages just fine.
Tuesday’s game was a good example of the difference between the two netminders. Hasek was pulled after allowing four goals, including two off big rebounds. Osgood came in and looked a lot sharper.
All of that said, it would seem obvious that the correct thing to do would be to make a change, to play Osgood more often and give the Red Wings a better chance to win.
But not doing anything right now would be better than doing something like making a change.

Is Chris Osgood HOF Material?

Osgood’s name doesn’t often come up in a discussion of potential Hall of Famers, but he’s going to force selectors to take a long look at him when he retires. Thursday night’s win gave him a career mark of 343-186-66, with 24 overtime losses. He has 43 shutouts, a career goals-against average of 2.44 and two Stanley Cup rings, including a 16-win performance in the run to the 1998 Cup. At age 34—he turns 35 on Nov. 26—Osgood easily could finish with more than 400 wins

Lingering pain above Dominik Hasek’s knee means that Chris Osgood will get his first start of the season tonight against Calgary.
