Morning Line

“I remember thinking, ‘Holy crap, I just shot myself in the head.  It wasn’t like a premeditated suicide. It was stupid. I actually thought the gun wasn’t loaded. It was impulsive. Crazy, irrational. Mind spinning a hundred miles an hour. It wasn’t like I left a note. I call it an accident.”

-Clint Malarchuk, goalie coach for the Calgary Flames.  More from Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald.

Clint Malarchuk Named Atlanta’s Goaltending Consultant

from Ben Wright of Blueland Blog,

It’s been a busy day for the Thrashers front office. Just a few hours after signing defenseman Freddy Meyer the team has announced that former Buffalo Sabre Clint Malarchuk has been hired as a goaltending consultant. Malarchuk will spend some of his time in Atlanta working with Ondrej Pavelec and Chris Mason and will also travel to work with other goalies in the organization whether they’re in the AHL, ECHL, CHL or college (if NCAA rules permit it of course).

More Problems For Malarchuk

from the Record-Courier,

Ex-National Hockey League goalie Clint Malarchuk was charged Saturday with driving under the influence in Gardnerville with a blood-alcohol content reportedly three times the legal limit in Nevada.

Malarchuk was stopped just before 10 p.m. Saturday when a deputy on patrol on Toler at Stodick Park observed a pickup truck cross the double-yellow line for about 100 feet before it swerved back. The vehicle crossed the yellow line a second time at Orchard Road.

A driver identified as Malarchuk reportedly denied he’d been drinking and told the officer he hadn’t had a drink in two years.

The driver agreed to a field sobriety test and stumbled as he stepped out of the truck. A preliminary test indicated a breath-alcohol content of .233, according to reports.

Columbus In A Tough Spot With Malarchuk

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

...Which is to say this looked exactly like a suicide attempt, but there is no way to prove it.

Malarchuk, after resisting, ultimately accepted treatment and was hospitalized. He has since been discharged. His coaching career is in jeopardy and he has put the Jackets in an awful position. This gunshot will reverberate for days, months, years.

I should say, off the top, that Malarchuk is one of the most compelling and likable human beings I’ve met.

Line Of The Day

from Puck-rakers,

Hitchcock was asked if he was planning to “go with Malarchuk” tonight against the Canucks:

“Hey, he wasn’t bad for a guy in the 1970s. I don’t think you’ll see him (Thursday night). It was hard enough to get him out there for practice. He kept holding out for a better deal. We didn’t get it done until right before practice.”
