Perry Learns Nothing Beats Hard Work

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

Instead of it being Daniel Sedin’s coronation in Las Vegas, it was Corey Perry who walked off with the Hart Trophy six months ago and became the first Ducks player in franchise history to win the league’s prestigious individual award.

Just as surprising was Perry’s start to 2011-12 that had people wondering if he left his game in the desert. The gritty goal-scoring winger didn’t hesitate to give an honest evaluation of his work.

When asked if he felt his game has been there from the beginning, Perry quickly said, “No, it hasn’t been.”

“Probably mid-November is finally when it really started,” he continued. “I don’t know what happened. Maybe it was the hangover from the year before. At the start of the year, I thought it was going to be easier or whatever.

“I learned pretty quick that you still got to work hard and still go to do all the little things. Finally one day, things went right. I tried to stick with that game plan instead.”

Morning Line

“You want to score goals and you want to put up points and you want to help your team win, but if you’re not confident I don’t think any of those are going to happen.  Going in and being confident and knowing you can do this and this is what got you here, it adds to the fire and away you go.

“Once you get your feet wet and then, knowing our team, Getzy (Ryan Getzlaf) and myself and Bobby Ryan, we’re the guys that people look up to to produce every night. And to put that pressure on us, we have fun with it. We want to be out there, we want to be the guys that are the go-to guys, and that’s why we enjoy where we are and enjoy playing hockey.”

Perry Accepts His Hart Trophy

from Eric Stephens of the OC Register,

It is no secret that Corey Perry has often let his emotions get in the way throughout his hockey career and that might never change.

But as he tried to give a short thank-you speech upon winning the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player Wednesday night, Perry couldn’t keep from getting choked up as the words came out.

It was a heartfelt moment for a player who isn’t afraid to rub someone the wrong way on the ice.

“I’m an emotional person,” Perry said at the league’s awards ceremony at the Palms Casino Resort. “It’s like going back when we won the Stanley Cup. I cried after that. That’s just the person I am.”

NHL Partying in Vegas

From Melissa Arseniuk of Postmedia News via Faceoff.com:

Meanwhile, another party raged further south on the Strip, as Anaheim Duck Corey Perry hosted an awards kickoff party at Chateau Nightclub and Gardens inside the Paris Hotel and Casino. Coincidentally — and, some would say, oh-so-conveniently — Perry’s party coincided with the club’s ongoing $100,000 bikini contest, which provided plenty of eye candy throughout the evening.

The 2010-2011 Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy winner arrived at the club in true Las Vegas style, rolling in with a 10-person entourage.

The group was given a table on the VIP stage complete with bottle service, but Perry didn’t have a single drink. Suffice to say he should be relatively fresh for what could be a big day for him: He is up for both the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league MVP and the Ted Lindsay Award.

Also at Chateau Tuesday night was nine-time all-star Jeremy Roenick, who more than made up for Perry’s alcohol abstinence, and once again proved himself a perennial party boy. The retired star continued his NHL awards tradition and partied hard, double-fisting drinks in the VIP — Champagne in one hand and vodka-cranberry in the other.

Remembering the Moment

image

Reflecting on the 2007 Stanley Cup win for the Ducks, Helene Elliotte at the LA Times ducks into a time capsule to remember Anaheim’s moment in the sun:

“That’s still to this day one of the most amazing feelings and tough to pinpoint exactly how you feel at that moment,” [Dustin Penner] said. “The whole season was a grind. You went through ups and downs the whole year and a lot of things had to line up for us to get to that point, but it was such a great feeling about relief and success and accomplishment and the pride everybody had for each other in that room.”

The feeling was similar for Perry.

“That was a special moment for all three of us. All the emotions running through your body, I don’t even know if you really knew what was going on. It happened so fast,” he said. “You dream your whole life that one day you’ll get to hold it up in the air, and we had that chance and we took it all in.”

Ducks Upset With Yandle’s Slash

from Curtis Zupke of Ducks Blog,

“It’s a tough one to take,” Perry said. “It was a good slash right on the wrist. He got me between elbow pad and glove. It’s bone on stick.”

Perry came out for the third period and ended up playing nearly 17 minutes.

Coach Randy Carlyle said his team was affected by Yandle’s slash and suggested the NHL’s disciplinarian staff might review it.

“We got angry when Yandle slashed Corey Perry,” Carlyle said. “It was a pretty vicious slash, kind of a baseball swing at his hand. I’m sure they’ll be looking at that. That got people a little upset.”

Pest- Perry Or Holmstrom?

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

Both are among the most respected members of their respective teams. Both make their living around the net. And both have a way of riling up the opposition — especially the goalies.

Whether it’s part of the reason why they’re so effective or whether they just delight in being a nuisance, the Ducks’ Corey Perry and Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom are equally good at providing offense and digging their way under the skin of the players they go up against.

Perry, 25, is the more naturally talented player and he leads the Ducks with 28 points this season, including 12 goals. Holmstrom, 37, has just six goals but he’s got 220 in his career and is arguably the best at battling for position inside and screening a goalie for his teammates.

Sometimes their zeal for competition straddles the line or crosses over it. But Perry and Holmstrom probably wouldn’t be as effective as they are without playing on the edge.

Sound Familiar?

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,

Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel was at once angered and delighted by the fracas that coincided with the final horn Friday in the Blue Jackets’ 4-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Anaheim forward Corey Perry, who had been pushing the limits of legal physical play throughout the game, took a whack at Blue Jackets center Antoine Vermette, then jabbed at him two or three times before throwing what Arniel termed a “sucker punch.”

A five-on-five skirmish ensued. Skirmish, I say, because it stopped just short of an all-out line brawl. As Perry skated away holding his arm, Vermette and Ducks winger Bobby Ryan wrestled each other to the ground and drew roughing penalties at the 20:00 mark of the third period.

Remarkably, Perry was not given a penalty. But there is a check next to his name in Arniel’s book.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/18/10

This morning’s three cheers for those that shined in yesterday’s action:

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/15/10, Plus a Look Around the Southeast this Weekend

Today’s three cheers, bestowed upon those who excelled for their clubs in action yesterday:

***Cheers to Nashville’s Steve Sullivan, who had a pair of the three first period goals for his club, en route to a 4-3 Predators win. In the debut of the new, daily feature from yours truly, I offer a morning toast to those who deserve as much for their performances of a night ago:

He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.

All Corey Perry

from Matt Vevoda of Ducks.com,

How do you like the team moving forward into next season?

Signing Saku again and adding Toni Lydman on defense, we’re moving forward well despite losing Scotty. We’re a team that is re-grouping and trying to shake off that disappointment. We’ll be hungry. Moving forward, I think we’re going to be good. With Saku back, he is a leader in that dressing room. He’s a big part of the puzzle. When he’s around, he just makes that room lively. We need a lot more guys like him. He’s one of those guys that can lead by example.

Corey Perry Involved With EA Sports NHL 10

from John Gaudiosi of IGN,

Corey Perry already has a Stanley Cup ring at the age of 23. Now the Anaheim Ducks forward is gunning for a second. The 2003 first round pick had 72 points this season, including 32 goals and 40 assists. The eighth-seeded Ducks already toppled the first place San Jose Sharks and now have their sights set on the Detroit Red Wings.

In addition to focusing on his team’s latest run for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Perry lent EA Sports a hand with its motion-capture for its upcoming NHL 10 hockey game. He donned the skates, helmet and a special suit with reflective balls to have his on-ice maneuvers captured for inclusion in this fall’s latest hockey game. Perry talks about his love of videogames in this exclusive interview.

IGN: What’s it like to know that your actual moves and trick shots are now going to be part of NHL 10?

Corey Perry: It’s pretty exciting. It’s something that you really don’t think about as a kid – all of the stuff that it takes to make a videogame like this. When you’re part of it, it’s special.

Perry Responds To ‘Crybaby’ Label

from Dan Wood of the Ducks Blog,

Ducks right wing Corey Perry laughed.

He said he hadn’t seen last month’s Yahoo! Sports interview with Evgeni Nabokov in which the San Jose Sharks goaltender called Perry a “crybaby.”

“I don’t even care,” Perry said when relayed the details Thursday night after he had scored the lone shootout goal in a 6-5 Ducks triumph over the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place. “I’m not even listening to that. He can say what he wants. It’s — whatever.”

Perry accused Nabokov of kicking him after play had stopped during a 1-0 Sharks victory March 15 at Honda Center. Nabokov denied it, and the NHL announced no supplementary discipline for either player. Perry had cross-checked the back of a prone Nabokov’s legs before the alleged kicking incident.

Perry Says Nabokov Kicked Him

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

A 1-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks wasn’t the only thing that left a sour feeling in the Ducks’ locker room Sunday night.

Ducks right wing Corey Perry accused Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov of using his skate to deliver a kick to Perry’s arm after play had stopped near the San Jose net during a Ducks power-play opportunity late in the third period.

“Everything was over,” Perry said. “I was still lying there on my knees. All of a sudden, Nabokov just turned and kicked me. He rolled onto his side and kicked me with his right leg. He hit me with his toe.”...

“I didn’t kick him,” Nabokov said. “I was moving my legs to get up, to get out of there, so whatever he was saying is his problem.

“Ask him what he did.”

Corey Perry Suspended Four Games

NEW YORK (Jan. 3, 2009)—Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry has been suspended for four games, without pay, for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux during the third period of NHL Game #564 Friday night, the National Hockey League announced.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Perry will forfeit $114,516.12. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Perry will miss Anaheim’s game against Phoenix Jan. 4, the home-and-home series against Los Angeles Jan. 6 and 8, and versus Tampa Bay Jan. 9. He will be eligible to return Jan. 11 against New Jersey.

added 7:10pm, via Ducks Blog,

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Perry said. “That’s what the league came down with and you have to live with it. I came up with the elbow. I didn’t mean to hurt him … It’s a tough situation. The league is trying to crack down on hits (like that).”

I happened to see the elbox on the NHL Network today, and it was one of those useless elbows.  Perry caught Giroux by surprise, met him just inside the blueline away from the play, and delivered the elbow.  The camera from behind the net caught it since it was not near the play going on.

Tampering Charges Still Alive

From Dan Wood at Ducks Blog,

Just because we haven’t heard anything about it lately doesn’t mean that something couldn’t still come from the Ducks’ formal tampering charge against the Edmonton Oilers.

The NHL gave Edmonton until Friday to respond to the charge filed last month by Ducks general manager Brian Burke after comments made by then-Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe during a July 4 interview with Edmonton’s Team 1260 radio.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, who is on vacation this week, is expected to have something to say on the matter after receiving and processing the Oilers’ response.

“We’ve had active and strong dialogue with Brian and David McNab,” Morris said Monday afternoon. “Certainly, they’re showing Corey the respect they have for him as a player. We’re moving in the right direction.”

Ducks Focus On Perry

from Eric Stephens of the LA Times,

Corey Perry’s future is also high on their agenda. Perry, 23, can be a restricted free agent July 1 and he figures to command a salary in excess of $4 million after leading the Ducks with 29 goals this season despite missing time because of a severed tendon in his right leg.

Burke said he’s aware the longer Perry remains unsigned, the more the right wing could be the target of a pricey offer sheet like the one Dustin Penner received from Edmonton last summer, which the Ducks ultimately didn’t match.

“There’s no more pressing issue for this hockey club than to get him re-signed,” Burke said.

Ducks Updates: Perry and Niedermayer

From the AP via KTEN.com

Anaheim right wing Corey Perry said he probably will play in Game 4 of the Ducks’ playoff series against the Dallas Stars.

After a morning skate-around, Perry said he felt good but acknowledged it will be a game-time decision whether he will play Thursday night. The Ducks’ top goal scorer hasn’t played since March 6, when the quad tendon above his right knee was lacerated by the skate of Colorado goalie Jose Theodore.

Fellow right wing Rob Niedermayer did not make the trip to Dallas for Thursday night’s game, remaining home with concussion-like symptoms. He also missed Game 3.

Corey Perry Healing Fast

From Eric Stephens at the LA Times,

The sight of Perry taking part in a couple of drills was encouraging for the Ducks as it appears their leading goal scorer this season could be in position to return sometime during the Western Conference quarterfinals against Dallas.

Perry skated for the first time since his right quadriceps muscle was severed just above the knee when he was cut by the skate of Colorado goaltender Jose Theodore in a game March 6.

“Today, it felt great,” Perry said. “That’s why I stayed out and did a couple of drills with the team. If it continues to be like that, it could be quicker than everybody thinks.”

Perry Dealing With Injury

from the LA Times,

Perry said he didn’t feel pain right away but soon realized that he needed to get off the ice.

“I knew something happened,” he said. “I didn’t know I was cut. But I knew something happened. I just went straight off the ice. I looked down and saw a cut and saw some blood. I thought, ‘This can’t be good.’ “

Colorado team physician Andy Parker immediately tended to Perry on the Ducks’ training table, and the winger was rushed to Denver’s Rose Medical Center for surgery to repair the tendon, which was 75% torn, according to the Ducks’ training staff.

“They numbed me up and I was out,” Perry said. “I woke up and I was out of surgery.”

The signing of center Ryan Getzlaf to a five-year contract extension now means the Ducks will turn their attention to right wing Corey Perry, who has a team-leading 11 goals.

Perry, 22, is also in the last year of his original three-year entry level contract and can become a restricted free agent in July. But General Manager Brian Burke said he needs to resolve the uncertain status of Niedermayer before he can begin negotiations with his winger.

“We have to wait and see what Scotty tells us what he wants to do because it affect our ability to sit down with Corey Perry,” Burke said.

Ducks Trying To Find Their Groove

from the LA Daily News,

Which Ducks team will show up from night to night has become anybody’s guess. That only makes tonight’s game with the Coyotes - the third time the two teams have faced each other in the season’s first five weeks - all the more interesting.

“If we play our style, our game - forechecking, getting in and out of the cycle - our power play clicked a few times in Phoenix. If we’re doing that and we’re skating, we’re going to create chances and eventually they’re going to go in the net,” said Corey Perry, who scored twice in Saturday’s win. “So it’s just one of those things. The other night, five went in, and last night none went in.”

Corey Perry Emerging for Ducks

From Eric Stephens at the LA Times,

Perry is coming off his biggest game of the season Saturday night at Phoenix where he scored two goals, assisted on another and also dropped the gloves with the Coyotes’ Daniel Carcillo in a 5-2 victory.

It was a so-called “Gordie Howe hat trick”—a goal, an assist and a fight. More important, Perry now has eight goals, almost halfway to the 17 goals he scored last season.

The third-year forward is beginning to emerge as the first-line pure scorer that the Ducks envisioned when they took him in the first round of the 2003 draft.
