Hartsburg Fired

from TSN,

Craig Hartsburg was fired as head coach of the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night, only 48 games into his first season behind the team’s bench.

The final straw for Hartsburg might have been Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Washington Capitals.  After the game, Hartsburg called his team out for not playing hard.

Afternoon Line

“The easy way out is to bench a player, that’s the easy thing to do. Maybe it’s a fault. Maybe I should. But that’s not working with people, that’s pushing them aside. I’d rather challenge people to be better.”

Morning Line

“I certainly don’t like the way we played, to tell you the truth, the last three games.  I don’t think our level of work and competing and desperation is high enough. I think we’ve got players that need to get out of the comfort zone and start to realize they need to battle harder. Battle to stay on lines, battle to stay in the lineup.

“We have got to change our identity as a team. Our identity right now is not a hard- working, competing, checking team. If it doesn’t change, we won’t have any success.”

-Ottawa Coach Craig Hartsburg.  More on the Senators from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun.

The Structured Senators

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

“(The players are) kind of on pins and needles themselves wondering what it’s going to be about, but to me we want to make sure people understand that there’s going to be an identity and type of game that we want to play,” said Hartsburg.

“Everybody is going to be asked to play within that structure. A guy like Jason Spezza, who is a gifted offensive puck handler, there’s room for that. Cody Bass and (Shean) Donovan, there’s room for them in our structure and a need for both type of players. There’s going to be good structure and the team is going to take a lot of pride in the work part of the game. We want a mentality that we can defend and we can attack.”

Different Paths For Coaches

from James Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen,

Most people in hockey will tell you Hartsburg and DeBoer are both excellent choices to be NHL coaches. But the paths they’ve followed this spring read like some warped coaching version of The Tortoise and The Hare.

Bryan Murray interviewed Hartsburg very early in the process, and then Hartsburg went home and waited, with little apparent interest from other clubs.

DeBoer, meanwhile, has been the coaching version of Steven Stamkos the past few weeks: a junior star with a glowing résumé that had a bunch of teams pursuing him. He has been a candidate for almost every NHL job opening so far.

Hartsburg Says No Contact With NHL Teams

from the Sault Star,

Craig Hartsburg said Saturday he’s looking forward to discussing a contract extension that would see him continue beyond next season as the Soo Greyhounds head coach.

Speaking like someone who expects to enter the 2008-2009 Ontario Hockey League campaign behind the Hounds bench, the 48-year-old Hartsburg said he can’t totally rule out a return to the NHL, but “as of right now I’m assuming I’ll be back.”

About to enter the final year of a five-year contract he signed in 2004, the Stratford, Ont., native’s name has been mentioned prominently as a top candidate for, among others, the Ottawa Senators head coaching job.
