Finally, Dan Boyle got his due.
The 11-year NHL veteran, among the league’s top defensemen for at least half that time, was selected to play in the All-Star Game for the first time.
“You know what, I had been in this situation before, where I had a good start to the season but didn’t go, so I wasn’t thinking about it too much, to be very honest with you,” Boyle told ESPN.com. “But when I found out, it is a bonus. It’s not a goal I set every year. I’ve got bigger and more important things on my mind.
“But it’s only human nature to feel good about it. It’s nice to get recognized.”

Dan Boyle of the San Jose Sharks participated in an NHL tele-conference today.
Q. Your departure from Tampa Bay was probably a little bit unpleasant at the time. Any regrets now?
DAN BOYLE: No, not anymore (laughter). Like you said, ‘at the time.’ I just signed a six-year extension, was planning to be there for a while. But certainly having seen the way some guys have been treated and what’s gone on so far, and the way on top of it I’ve been treated here, I have no regrets whatsoever.
Q. Why is San Jose better than Detroit this season?
DAN BOYLE: Well, I mean, our records are pretty similar. I think we have the edge so far. Honestly, depth I think is probably the biggest key. We have four lines, we have six D. When our top goalie Nabby got hurt, our backup goalie came in and did a great job. We’ve been lucky as far as health-wise, we’ve been pretty injury-free. You know, we’ll see. I mean, it’s a long season. We’ll see what happens. At the end of June, that’s what matters.

Boyle Returns To Tampa, Wants To “Stick It To ‘Em”

(Dan) Boyle said “it’s only natural” to want to play well against a former team. “I’m like anybody else.” He was more direct with San Jose’s Mercury News.
“I’m not going to sit here and lie and say that it doesn’t mean anything,” he told the paper. “As a player, as a competitive person, you want to stick it to ‘em. I want to win, and I want to win bad. I want to go out there and have a good game and win decisively."…
“It’ll be exciting to see him,” Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier said. “He’s a great player, one of the best in the league. We’ll have to try to contain him because we know he’ll come hard.”
But Boyle, who had an assist Friday for five points in his past three games, insisted he is not coming to Tampa to even a score. “I know it’s cliche, but it’s about us playing a hockey game. It’s more about that than me versus the owners.”

Erik Erlendsson at Bolts Report quotes Dan Boyle tonight:
“It got to the point where once it probably a few days ago, when I was threatened, that they just didn’t care and that my [butt] is going to end up on waivers and end up in Atlanta. That’s just not the way you do business. I don’t know if I have too much class or what, because I don’t want to say exactly what was said, but when it gets personal like it did, the line was crossed. When my work ethic is questioned, my off-season work ethic and the way I get ready for games and what I do is questioned, and it gets personal, and I’m threatened, that is absolutely the way not to do business.
“And I feel sad because I can’t say one thing bad, even with all the ups and downs and battles I had with [former coach John Tortorella], at the end of the day there was respect. In this case I was absolutely blindsided by this whole situation. I know what the response is, that things happen quickly, it’s a business, but that’s not the case when Im told one thing and I find out months later that the complete opposite went on behind my back.”

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has acquired defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defensemen Matt Carle and Ty Wishart, a first round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Report: Dan Boyle to the San Jose Sharks

The Vancouver Canucks are one of three teams in the running for veteran defenseman, Dan Boyle.
Sources tell TSN the Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers are the three teams Boyle is considering, however he has yet to waive his no-trade clause to clear the way for a trade.
The belief is Boyle will consent to trade at some point today and will select the team of his choice, however until he officially waives his no-trade, there is always a chance the Lightning’s efforts to move him may be scuttled.

Sources tell TSN that Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle has waived his no-trade clause and has agreed to a trade to the San Jose Sharks.
The paper work confirming Boyle has consented is being processed right now and once signed by Boyle, it will clear the way for the Sharks and Lightning to complete the deal.
In return for the 31 year old veteran defenseman, its believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23 old defenseman Matt Carle, a 1st round pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick.
Sources say defenseman Brad Lukowich is also part of the deal going to San Jose.
Update 10:51am ET: From Lightning Strikes --
“Yes," Boyle’s agent George Bazos said. “That’s the way we’re going. We went through the whole process and picked a [place] he’s very happy to be. If the Lightning can go ahead and [consummate] a trade, then Dan is very happy with that.”

“We’ve been in communication,” Bazos said of Boyle’s camp and the Lightning. “Everybody understands everybody’s position. Dan is going to think about things tonight. We will have further discussions (Friday) to find what is the best option for Dan.”
Said Lightning owner Len Barrie: “We’re working closely with Dan on trying to make this work on both sides. Dan has been a great player for the organization, but sometimes we have to make tough decisions. The good news for Dan is he has an opportunity to get into some great situations.”

Teams Interested In Boyle

But there apparently are more teams interested than the Senators. It is believed the list includes the Sharks, who lost Brian Campbell to free agency, Canucks, Flyers, Islanders and Thrashers. There could be others but these seem the most likely right now....
Boyle has said he is not inclined to waive his no-trade clause, but doing so could be risky as it is believed Tampa Bay could at some point put him on waivers and expose him to the entire league. If Boyle agrees to a trade, at least he has some control over where he ends up.

Boyle Asked to Waive NTC

Things all of a sudden seem to be moving fast with the Lightning and Dan Boyle as the Lightning defenseman confirmed the team has asked him to waive his no-trade clause.
“They have asked me to waive my no-trade clause,” Boyle said, “but that’s all I can say right now.”
It was unclear if the Lightning gave Boyle a destination.
Update 2:11pm ET (alanah): Erik Erlendsson at his Tampa Tribune blog, notes this:
Here’s an indicator as to what the Lightning has in mind of what they fully intend to do with Dan Boyle. If you go to the Lightning homepage during the introduction of the new faces (and a couple of familiar ones), Boyle is not among those listed, which also includes Gary Roberts, Ryan Malone along with the likes of Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis. But no mention of Boyle.

Boyle Knows It Is A Business

Boyle, who turns 32 on July 12, said listening to the rumors he will be traded to help clear cap space for a team that is over the $56.7-million limit “has been tough. It’s been really hard.”
He also said that right now, he has no intention of waiving his no-trade clause. Having said that, he also said he understands this situation is not personal.
“I’m looking at every different angle, but mainly, absolutely, business,” he said. “If a trade makes sense, I completely understand, and I have no problem with that. But on the other hand, if it doesn’t make sense, then I do have a problem with that.”

The Boyle Talk

Because Boyle is one of the game’s best puck-moving defensemen, characterized by former Lightning coach John Tortorella as the key to the team’s attack.
It is why Hall of Famer and Panthers analyst Denis Potvin said of the unconfirmed gossip, “Until something happens, I won’t believe it. I just don’t see where this will be a smart move.”
The talk could be moot.
Boyle, who turns 32 on July 12 and has a six-year, $40-million contract that pays $6.667-million annually, has a no-trade clause Bazos said he is not inclined to waive. Even that sparked conversation.

Sources say the Tampa Bay Lightning have contacted the Boyle camp to alert them to the fact a deal may be in the works. Whether or not the Lightning have officially asked Boyle to waive his no-trade clause is unconfirmed, however a source close to the player says they have.

Before we even get into why the Lightning, as it stands at this moment, is in no position to give up one of the league’s best puck-moving defensemen, let’s start with this: Dan Boyle, recently married to a local woman and expecting a child in late November, has a no-trade clause that his agent said Monday Boyle likely is not inclined to waive.
“I haven’t pushed it with Dan other than when we signed,” agent George Bazos said of when Boyle signed his six-year, $40-million deal. “Dan wants to be in Tampa. Nothing has changed as far as that goes. My best guess is that Dan would not want to waive his no-trade clause right now.”

Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts are officially members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and defenceman Dan Boyle might be the player in the team’s cross-hairs.
Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract, while Roberts agreed to terms on a one year contract that pays him a base salary of $1.25 million plus $10,000 for every game that he plays in the 2008-09 NHL regular season. So if Roberts were to play in all 82 games, he would earn $820,000 in bonuses, which could make his total income for the season $2.07 million.

A First For Parise

Parise’s fight came 3:47 into the third period against Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Boyle. Parise actually inadvertantly started the altercation by kicking Boyle’s left skate out from under him in the right corner.
“If I did, I didn’t try,” Parise said. “I wasn’t trying to slew foot him or anything. I was just going for the puck. We got back in front of the net and he tried to slew foot me and he got me in the face, so it just escalated from there.”
Parise said he had not been in a fight since midget. “First and probably last for a while,” he said. “I don’t see it happening again anytime soon. It was all kind of a blur when it happened...It was fun. Something you’ve got to do.”

The word on the street from rival general managers around the league is that Lightning GM Jay Feaster is in a situation where he’s being told by potential team owner Oren Koules to find out what he could get for veteran forward Brad Richards. [...]
First, the team wants to have centre Vincent Lecavalier signed to a long-term contract this summer. They want him locked up and made him a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning for life. Secondly, you know that winger Martin St. Louis is also in for the long haul because his contract gets more affordable with each passing year.
Feaster also wants to sign defenceman Dan Boyle to a long-term contract, but the team also wants to get a No. 1 goaltender somewhere down the line. It’s going to be expensive to do all of that.

To Sign Boyle, Trade Richards

Feaster isn’t trading Vinny Lecavalier. He probably wants to keep Boyle. To do that, he has to cut salary somewhere. Richards has underperformed, Forsberg seems out of the equation, so it seems logical Feaster wants to see what Richards’ market is like before deciding if he can sign Boyle, because if Tampa Bay can be out from under Richards’ salary, that makes Boyle’s contract doable.
As we have said, there are a lot of moving parts here, including how the Lightning does Wednesday and Thursday in what will be a difficult back-to-back against the Sabres and Islanders.

Here is coach John Tortorella after the game:
“As I’ve always said, everybody always talks about the three guys,’’ he said of Vinny Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Dan Boyle. “But there is no one more important to our team than Danny Boyle. He is our transition key.’’
Perhaps Boyle, who wants to make the Tampa Bay area, perhaps even St. Petersburg, his long-term home, takes a little less to stay, though he already did that in his current contract of three-years, $10-million. Much could depend on what the Lightning wants to be. Does it want to compete next season under would-be owner Oren Koules, or does it want to take some steps back now to take more forward later. The answer to that riddle may be the key to getting a new contract done.

The Value Of Boyle

The agent for Dan Boyle said he and the Lightning will have preliminary talks this week about extending the star defenseman’s contract.
“They had always told us they wanted Dan to stay and be part of the organization,” George Bazos said Sunday.
Boyle, 31, one of the game’s best puck-moving blue-liners, is in the final year of a three-year, $10-million contract.
A good move by Tampa Bay, they will get a picture of the dollar figure Boyle wants, if they can’t make the dollars work, look for Boyle to be traded near the deadline.

Bolts May Be Forced To Move Boyle

Lightning GM Jay Feaster has stated his intention to open contract talks with Boyle’s agent. But the odds of a deal being worked out in the next three weeks are remote, at best, even if a purchase agreement to sell the team to Oren Koules is announced this week as expected.
Defensemen the caliber of Boyle, who can skate and move the puck, are commodities in the NHL these days and teams don’t like to part with them. But that also means the player holds the hammer in negotiations and there’s a good chance Boyle’s side could start talks seeking a salary starting in the neighborhood of $7 million a season. That’s why moving Boyle appears all but likely in my opinion.

Tampa Bay Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster Issued a Statement Today Regarding Dan Boyle:
“The MRI on Dan Boyle’s surgically-repaired left wrist showed that two of the three tendons severed on September 22 have not properly healed and that additional surgery will be required. We have placed Dan on the NHL’s Injured Reserve List retroactive to his last game, November 3, 2007. Dan will be consulting with a number of hand and wrist specialists recommended to him by the Lightning medical staff, after which he will be scheduled for additional surgery on his wrist. Dan will be out of the Lightning line-up indefinitely

Boyle To Undergo MRI Tomorrow

Dan Boyle did not practice Sunday and will have an MRI Monday to make sure the three surgically repaired tendons in his left wrist are healing properly. Coach John Tortorella said Boyle will not play Monday at Florida, and said the team has some concerns about the strength in the hand.
