from Dan Ellis of the Nashville Predators at the Hockey News,
You would think after 10 years of hockey the city of Nashville would be crazy about the sport, but that’s not necessarily the case.
I think our ownership group has done a good job emphasizing a connection to the local community to get support. Now the team just needs to continue to have success and bring more and more fans out.

Praise For Poile

from Edward Fraser at the Hockey News,
When I first heard about [Dan] Ellis’ new deal, I assumed the $3.5 million was his annual salary, not the two-year total. Even at $3.5 per, Ellis wouldn’t have been overpaid as a starting goalie.
So, in other words, at $1.5 million next season and $2 million in 2009-10, Ellis is a steal. And Poile, the only GM the Preds have ever known, should be applauded for the move.
The Ellis inking wasn’t the lone notch on Poile’s bedpost this off-season, either.

from the Nashville Predators,
The Predators significantly clarified their goaltending situation today, announcing they have reached an agreement in principle with Dan Ellis on a multi-year deal and then trading Chris Mason to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a fourth round pick in this year’s draft. The trade gives the Predators nine selections in this year’s Entry Draft, including multiple picks in first, second, and fourth rounds and single picks in the third, fifth, and sixth rounds.

Preds Come Away With Nothing

from John Glennon of the Tennessean,
Ellis was the sole reason the Predators even reached overtime, as the inexperienced netminder turned away 52 of 53 shots in regulation before surrendering a breakaway goal to Johan Franzen.
“The way Ellie played tonight, there really aren’t words to describe it,’’ Predators forward J.P. Dumont said. “It would have been great if we had found a way to win for him. He deserved to win.’’
Any thoughts that Ellis might suffer from jitters while playing in his first postseason had probably been eliminated after the first four games of this series. But in case there were still doubters, Ellis nearly single-handedly beat one of the most skilled teams in the league on Friday.
“The biggest disappointment,’’ Predators Coach Barry Trotz said, “was that we wasted that good goaltending effort.’’

Ellis Competes Against The Best

from John Glennon at Chilling Out at the Tennessean,
...But the Wings were sunk in Game 4 due in part to the poor goaltending of Dominik Hasek, a six-time Vezina Trophy winner. And Detroit coach Mike Babcock just announced that Chris Osgood will replace Hasek for Game 5.
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised at this.
After all, Ellis outplayed Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo down the stretch, as the Predators battled the Canucks for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
What’s another all-star to knock off at this point?

Keeping the Weight On

From John Glennon at The Tennessean,
While most of us would worry about squeezing into our pants the next day, Predators goalie Dan Ellis has just the opposite problem. He’ll still have to worry about slipping out of his pads.
Ellis has the perfect metabolism for a supermodel. He can eat almost anything without gaining weight. Unfortunately for Ellis, his job description involves putting on about 40 pounds worth of equipment and skates, then sweating through 60 minutes of competition on a regular basis.
It’s no wonder that keeping up his weight — and his hydration level — proves such a challenge. The 6-foot, 185-pounder figured he loses about 10 pounds per game.
