Kasparaitis Heads To Russia

from the Blueshirts Blog at the NY Daily News,
Stuck in the minors with virtually no chance of being recalled because of his contract and how it fits under the salary cap, Kasparaitis has agreed to play the rest of the season for SKA St. Petersburg of the Russian Elite League. He told the Daily News that he’ll join the Russian club next week.
Technically, heading to Europe will be a violation of Kasparaitis’ contract. However, as the NHL has no transfer agreement in place with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, the Rangers would have to sue SKA St. Petersburg to prevent the move.

Renney on Kasparaitis Waiver Decision

from the Rangers Report,
“We’re trying to help him,” Renney said. “I don’t see Kaspar playing hockey for us, and we’ll do everything we can to help him play somewhere else. And if not, he’ll go to Hartford, and in the kind of condition he’s in, and the mental approach he’s taken, you never know.”
I asked Renney if he still thought Kasparaitis could play at the NHL level, and the coach said he believed he could. Bear in mind it’s in the Rangers’ best interest to have another team pick him up off waivers, so it wouldn’t make sense for the coach to elaborate on all of Kasparaitis’ deficiencies. But the answer merits passing on.

Kasparaitis On The Comeback Trail

from the New York Times,
Last March, Kasparaitis hit what he called rock bottom. At midseason, he had been banished to the Rangers’ top farm team, the Hartford WolfPack. He had arrived for training camp out of shape after off-season operations and was replaced on the Rangers’ roster by younger players. A 14-year N.H.L. defenseman, Kasparaitis was also going through a painful divorce and said he felt as if he were losing everything.
After a practice in Hartford, he had what he now describes as a panic attack. It alarmed team doctors enough that he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, where doctors found nothing physically wrong.
“It was emotional, the divorce and injuries and I don’t know, I was just tired from all the pressure in life,” he said. “Then I had the panic attack in Hartford after the practice.”
