Darryl Sutter Returns To Calgary
by Paul on 01/12/12 at 06:22 PM ET

from Rich Hammond at the Kings website,
This weekend, Sutter will return to the city where he spent eight high-profile years, first as coach and then as general manager of the Calgary Flames. Something of a polarizing figure in the town, at least among the media, Sutter is remembered both for his success behind the bench and tougher times in the GM’s seat.
Sutter led the Flames to the playoffs in each of his two full seasons as coach, then became full-time GM in 2006 and left in Dec. 2010 after mixed results. If Saturday’s return to Calgary holds any emotional attachment for Sutter, nearing the end of his first month as Kings coach, he won’t publicly acknowledge it.
“I have no feelings one way or another about it,” Sutter said. “(Working in Calgary) was a great experience. I worked with great people and I got lots of friends. That’s what it’s about at the end of the day.”
If anything, Sutter is disappointed. The Kings will fly into Calgary early Friday evening, play Saturday night, then immediately fly to Edmonton and play the following night. Sutter’s farm is located an hour outside Edmonton, and he won’t have a chance, on this trip, to visit extensively with family (and his prized bulls).
“I wish there was a day in between (games),” Sutter said. “I’ll see one part of my family in Calgary and the other part in Edmonton. That’s the most meaningful part, from a personal standpoint, clearly.”

The Sutter Brothers Talk
by Paul on 01/11/12 at 10:14 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Those who expected the Sutter boys to hug it out or apologize to one another obviously never saw them play.
But in the quiet confines of their respective homes — far from the cameras and the microphones — Darryl and Brent Sutter did the next closest thing: They finally talked.
After more than a year of silence prompted by anger, frustration and personality clashes that dotted their working relationship as GM and head coach, respectively, while with the Calgary Flames, the two spoke Sunday night.
They didn’t discuss their differences, nor bury the hatchet, nor agree to disagree or dissect old wounds …
They just talked.

A New Sutter?

from Rich Hammond at the LA Kings website,
After two weeks, there have been no public whippings. The locker-room carpet is not soaked in blood. No eardrums have been pierced. What happened? Isn’t Darryl Sutter supposed to be a raging, raving dictator?
Hired by the Kings as coach on Dec. 20, Sutter was preceded by his reputation as a humorless taskmaster who would terrify players and snarl at the media. One Canadian columnist compared him to malaria. Even a mostly positive newspaper piece described Sutter’s public personality as ``caustic’’ and ``contemptuous.’’
“I heard he’s a bit of a yeller,” Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said, a couple days before Sutter’s arrival.
When Sutter left the family farm in Alberta last month, did he do so as a changed man? Maybe, maybe not. With the Kings, he’s been more teddy bear than grizzly bear. During games, he wraps his arms around players, pats shoulders and offers encouragement. For a full week, at the end of postgame interviews, he sincerely wished reporters “Merry Christmas,” then “Happy New Year.” He has been accessible, helpful and friendly.

Kings Meet Sutter
by Paul on 12/21/11 at 05:52 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Darryl Sutter ran his first practice on behalf of his new team, the Los Angeles Kings today, and maybe the best news he received all day was that centre Mike Richards was finally available, cleared to practise and likely ready to play again soon after missing most of December with a suspected concussion.
The Kings’ spiral down the Western Conference standings coincided with Richards’s injury and ultimately cost long-time coach Terry Murray his job four games ago. After John Stevens filled in an interim basis - and will be retained as an assistant, in the short term anyway - Sutter will officially coach his first game Thursday night against the Anaheim Ducks, after almost a five-year absence from the NHL coaching ranks.
However, Sutter suggested Wednesday at a post-practice press conference that in his mind, he hasn’t been away at all.

Your Darryl Sutter Update
by Paul on 12/17/11 at 02:47 PM ET

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
And now, your daily moment of Darryl Sutter zen. There’s really no change and no surprise. Sutter’s deal to become the next Kings coach is essentially in place, and it will be a multi-year contract to be announced in the coming days. Per franchise policy, no coach can have a contract longer than the general manager’s contract, and Dean Lombardi is signed through the 2012-13 season, with an option for the following season.

Will Darryl Sutter Say Yes?
by Paul on 12/14/11 at 09:44 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
If he answers affirmatively, it would be the first thing anyone in the hockey world has heard from Sutter in almost a calendar year, which makes his return all the more surprising.
Since being fired as GM of the Flames last Christmas the 53-year-old executive went underground, disappearing from the game that once dominated his life.
Put out to pasture with a big severance cheque and a trail of nasty editorials blaming him for the sizeable hole he’d left the franchise in, Sutter retreated to his family’s homestead in Viking, Alta., to resume farming.
Refusing to answer any of the hundreds of phone calls from lowly media types, Sutter opted not to respond publicly to the ousting and hasn’t been quoted ever since.
Many figured his NHL career was over.

Sutter A Fit For The Kings
by Paul on 12/13/11 at 12:34 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
After years of painstaking rebuilding, the Kings imagine themselves as a team poised on the brink of playoff success.
Six consecutive years out of the playoffs produced a bundle of top draft choices, including Brayden Schenn, Doughty, Thomas Hickey, Jonathan Bernier, Lauri Tukonen and Dustin Brown. Schenn was traded this summer to Philadelphia in the blockbuster deal for Mike Richards, the signal in L.A. that the push was on.
Instead, they went backward, which is why Murray is on the outside looking in, and Lombardi is on the prowl for a new man behind the bench. Darryl Sutter? In the win-at-all costs NHL, stranger things have happened.

From what I’ve come to understand, the Kings don’t see Stevens as their long-term coach. Keep an eye on the whereabouts of Darryl Sutter in the next few days. Dean Lombardi is very close with Sutter and, as GM in San Jose, hired Sutter in 1997. Sutter left the coaching ranks after the 2005-06 season, as he went from coach/GM to GM, and he left that role last December. I’ll never forget the exchange I had with Lombardi, at the press conference to announce his hiring as Kings’ GM in 2006. It went like this…
Question: “In terms of qualities, what will you be looking for in a coach?”
Lombardi: “Darryl.”
Sutter, at that time, was still the coach in Calgary.

Darryl Sutter just stepped down asa general manager. Jay Feaster takes over.
added 2:19pm,
Calgary, AB– Calgary Flames President & CEO Ken King announced today that Darryl Sutter is stepping down as Executive VP and General Manager of the hockey club. Effective immediately, Jay Feaster has been appointed Acting General Manager and will assume full and complete responsibilities for day to day hockey operations.
“Darryl has performed valuable service to the Calgary Flames organization for 8 years,” said King. “He was the leader that ignited a renaissance of Flames hockey, moving us from a non-playoff team to an organization that was viewed as a respected and popular contender each year. We thank Darryl for his leadership and his important contributions to re-establishing the Calgary Flames as a model franchise. As we enter the next phase of our growth in the NHL, we are restructuring our leadership and processes. We are pleased that Darryl has agreed to assist in an orderly transition and will provide his valuable guidance in the process. He remains dedicated to the success of the team he worked so hard to build”.
“We will move forward under a new administration with Jay leading our hockey operations as Acting General Manager,” said King. “For the remainder of this season, Jay will be provided the opportunity to evaluate the team from the GM’s chair and build a long term plan. We believe that while we continue to compete for a playoff position this season, this period will provide both the organization and Jay time to decide on critical future decisions.”

You could say it’s time to get rid of the coach but what ails this squad runs a lot deeper than Brent Sutter. A lot higher, too. General manager Darryl Sutter has put this squad together in a haphazard manner. He has to pay the price for that. Move him out and slide assistant GM Jay Feaster onto the hot seat and allow him to shake things up, trade veterans for draft picks and prospects.

“Hello, Son? It’s Me, Dad. You’ve Been Traded.” Plus News from the Farm:11/18/10

Our weekly look at the performance of the Southeast Division’s top minor league affiliates from the week gone by kicks off this week with a thought on Calgary Flames GM Darryl Sutter trading his own son, Brett, to the Carolina Hurricanes (where he’ll report directly to AHL Charlotte, assuming he clears waivers).
I remarked on Twitter that, though I had found trouble a time or two in my younger days, my father had only threatened to ship me to another country – a reference to the younger Sutter’s recent run-in with the law, stemming from his alleged involvement in a bar fight in Scottsdale, Arizona. Several outlets have reported, however, that the trade – Sutter, a seldom-used forward, and defenseman Ian White to Carolina for d-man Anton Babchuk and grinding winger Tom Kostopoulos – was in the works long before the incident in question.

Should Darryl Sutter Keep His Job?
by Paul on 03/28/10 at 07:41 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Make no mistake, Darryl Sutter saved this franchise.
But now, seven years later, it clearly needs to be rescued once again.
With the Flames proving conclusively they’re neither playoff bound nor playoff worthy, the big question is whether Sutter is the man to clean up the mess he’s made.
Or is it time for ownership to hand the team over to someone with a fresh set of eyes and a radically new approach to building what has devolved into an aging, directionless, unmotivated and leaderless team?
Frustrated last spring by four straight first-round exits, the list of Sutter dissenters has since grown to the point the majority of fans want this year’s colossal collapse to be the final chapter in the general manager’s tenure.

Are The Sutters On Their Last Leg In Calgary?
by Paul on 01/31/10 at 05:03 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
There is a kind of protective bubble which has grown around hockey’s first family, the Sutters.
It is a bubble constructed out of hard work, sweat and more than a little blood. It is built on loyalty and family and a “my-word-is-my-bond” kind of integrity. It speaks to issues far greater than any of the wins and losses recorded on the hundreds of hockey rinks the pride of Viking, Alberta, has skated on over the past four or five decades.
The Sutters didn’t necessarily ask to exist within this bubble; but the family, for the most part, has been immune to criticism from the hockey world no matter which way the puck has bounced.
This has been especially true of brothers Darryl and Brent, who are currently manning the helm of the sinking ship known as the Calgary Flames.
But Sunday revealed stark evidence of the bubble springing more than a few leaks, which, by the time this season ends, may spell the end of the magical Sutter spell for both GM Darryl and coach Brent.

Long Odds For A Fleury Comeback
by Paul on 08/12/09 at 07:59 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Darryl Sutter believes Theo Fleury will get a tryout if cleared by the NHL.
“You and I could get a tryout—as long as we pay for our hotel room,” deadpanned the Flames GM yesterday, suggesting a no-strings attached camp invite means little.
That said, while trying his best to remain non-judgmental, Sutter isn’t optimistic the ex-Flames star will be capable of fitting into a league that has changed dramatically since Fleury’s last season in 2003.
“You pull for him because you think a lot of him, but six years is awhile,” said Sutter, revealing Fleury approached him during the playoffs to inform him of his intent to return to the game.
“The big thing is the calibre of training is significantly different these days. It’s one thing to lose weight, but we’ve got kids setting records with their fitness test results, let alone what phenomenal athletes like Iggy (Jarome Iginla) and Reggie (Robyn Regehr) are capable of. I think it would be very difficult for an older guy to get to those levels.”

Sutter Brothers Everywhere
by Paul on 06/21/09 at 06:46 PM ET

from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,
Down at the Pengrowth Sutterdome, they are poised for the big announcement that could come at any moment.
Brent Sutter is about to be named the new head coach of the Calgary Flames, which means there will soon be Sutters in the front office, with the farm team, on the ice and behind the players’ bench, where two other Sutter brothers have tried their luck to mixed reviews.
Naturally, some NHL observers are deeply concerned. They wonder, “What’s next? You come to the rink, park your car in the Ron Sutter section. A Sutter takes your ticket, another sells you popcorn, another shows you to your seat and another escorts you out if you call the coach a bum.”
But with general manager Darryl Sutter close to hiring his brother, the most compelling question is whether Brent Sutter is the right choice or merely a convenient namesake.

Sutter’s Open-Ended Contract
by Paul on 05/27/09 at 07:57 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald via Canada.com,
When it comes to job security, Darryl Sutter’s deal with the Calgary Flames is beyond long-term.
So says his boss, Ken King.
“Darryl does not have a year left on his contract,“King, the team president and CEO, said Tuesday. “Darryl has an employment agreement that does not have an end term on it.
“It’s unique in the league and it’s the best thing to build a long and deep relationship as part of our culture. We’ve deviated from the norm, and it’s a very positive situation.”
In other words, any talk of Sutter having to win next year or else—as general manager or head coach—is completely groundless, according to King.

Darryl Sutter says he will consider stepping back behind the bench for the Calgary Flames.
Three other NHL coaches, all under contract, are of interest to Sutter. Otherwise, the Calgary GM considers himself the top candidate to replace the fired Mike Keenan as head coach.
“I have high standards,” Sutter said Tuesday. “We have high standards.
“I can separate general manager and head coach pretty easily if you’re surrounded by good people. …If I find out at the end of the search that I’m the best candidate, then I’m the coach.”

What Happens If Darryl Sutter Coaches Too?
by Paul on 05/25/09 at 08:40 AM ET

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
There are certainly generous upsides to Sutter being dropped back behind the bench against his will. For starters, no additional financial outlay (with Keenan due a reported $1 million NOT to wear his skates out to post-practice media conferences for a year). Then there’s the fact that the handsomely-recompensed hired help would be accountable to their big boss on a daily basis. Sutter won’t accumulate many Mr. Congeniality Awards, isn’t exactly a Spritzer-down-the-baggy-pants kinda guy, but he ain’t the sort to condone slackers or allow strays to go off on their own; wander away from the herd.
He is, in anything, demanding, meticulous and not a man to cross. More than a sampling of those still around from the day rank him in the top cut of coaches they ever played for.
A couple of those trademark bitter beer-faces, simultaneously brimming with disbelief, menace and condescension, might be the most beneficial thing to ever happen to, say, the backpedalling Dion Phaneuf.

Sutter Believes In His Core
by Paul on 05/05/09 at 06:57 AM ET

from George Johnson ot the Calgary Herald,
As we sift through the fallout of the latest comeuppance, there’s been growing chatter from apoplectic fans about the
Flames perhaps considering the unthinkable—dealing one of the four cornerstones in the club’s foundation—captain Jarome Iginla, defencemen Dion Phaneuf and Robyn Regehr, along with Kiprusoff—while market value remains high.
From Sutter’s tone Monday, that ain’t happening….
“If you’ve only got four of them,’’ he argued, “then all you’ll be doing is fighting to get into the playoffs every year.’‘
Phaneuf, at 24, the ideal You-Tube age defenceman—heavy on the highlights, light on the consistency—has come in for the most flak. And justifiably so. He was highly erratic most of the regular season, and then beat to blazes come playoff time. His upside is such that not investing at least one more year of time and effort, despite the inherent frustrations, seems foolish. A lot of people believe what he needs is a good-sized cowboy boot (old junior coach Brent Sutter’s favoured brand, perhaps?) upside the rear end to knock him off his high horse and get him to listen.

Questions Surround Keenan
by Paul on 11/12/07 at 04:22 PM ET

from Scott Burnside at ESPN,
When GM Darryl Sutter deposed Jim Playfair as coach after one season and installed Iron Mike, the thinking was that the Flames had to get back to the hard-nosed play that saw them advance to the 2004 Stanley Cup finals. Sutter, whose relationship with Keenan extends back to their shared days in Chicago, believed the old task master was just the man to do the job.
Now, with the team in a free fall, there are questions about its preparation, focus, drive, energy and desire. Those are all of the things, the intangibles, Keenan was supposed to bring to the table. Those are coaching issues.
