from Kristina Rutherford of Sportsnet,
As the buzzer sounded at Winnipeg Arena and the Jets skated off the ice for the last time, Derek Meech stood in shock.
His face paint messy from tears, the 12-year-old was dressed in white for the final fight, and this was it.
The Jets were leaving town.
“It was hard to see them leave,” Meech, now 27, recalls. “After the game, none of the fans were leaving and tons of people were crying. It was a great experience but it was also pretty sad.”
The Winnipeg native never dreamed that 15 years later the franchise would return—and even better—that he’d be a part of the homecoming.

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,
The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Derek Meech to a one-year contract worth $500,000.
Meech will compete for the No. 6 spot in training camp and the preseason, but if he doesn’t get it, he’ll likely be traded due to the team’s crowded roster.

Meech Pays Tribute To His Mom

from the Winnipeg Free Press,
Meech quietly took the Stanley Cup to Children’s Hospital early Sunday afternoon, where he spent two hours with kids facing far greater challenges than the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“My mom passed away when I was 11, of cancer,” Meech said.
“A lot of these kids were pretty sick. It definitely brought some smiles,” he said later as he signed photos and jerseys and kept a steady grin through hundreds of photos of kids and parents and the cup.
It was Meech’s idea to go to Children’s Hospital, said proud dad Dennis Meech. “He wanted to remember his mom, in tribute to her.”
