via Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,
Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard has signed a four-year contract extension, The Dispatch has learned. The club will likely announce the extension later this morning.
Brassard has one year left on his current contract, so the extension will carry him through the 2013-14 season. He’s expected to anchor the No. 1 line this season, with Kristian Huselius on his left and captain Rick Nash on his right.
added 9:49am, Portzline has now added numbers…
The contract has an annual salary cap hit of $3.2 million. Brassard will make $2.8 million in 2010-11, $3.0 million 2011-12, $3.3 million 2012-13 and $3.7 million in 2013-14, the final year of the contract.

Rookies With A Little Seasoning

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
Brassard is winning 51.3 percent of his faceoffs, compared to 42.5 in 17 games last season. Hitchcock attributes Brassard’s success as one of this season’s top rookies to the fact he took the correct path to the NHL.
Brassard, 21, played four seasons of junior hockey. He spent most of last season in the AHL. This season, the coaching staff is putting him in position to succeed in the NHL.
When you look at which rookies are struggling this season and which are playing well, there’s a common theme. Rookies like Brassard, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Kris Versteeg and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mikhail Grabovski (the top rookie scorers) all spent considerable time in the AHL honing their skills.
It’s not only on the ice, it’s stuff like managing money, managing free time and playing professional hockey without the pressure that comes from being a highly hyped young NHL player.

Brassard Joins The Top Line

from the Columbus Dispatch,
The Blue Jackets hoped it wouldn’t come to this; not so soon, anyway.
But tonight, when the Blue Jackets play the Dallas Stars in American Airlines Center, rookie center Derick Brassard will join the No. 1 line with wingers Rick Nash and Fredrik Modin....
Hitchcock, perhaps more than anybody else in the organization, is reluctant to put Brassard too high in the lineup.
It’s not so much the opposing centers Brassard will face—tonight, for instance, he will get to know Stars center Mike Modano—but the big, burly defensemen, who dine on young, smallish, inexperienced players such as Brassard.
