“I have to admit I (as coach of the Boston Bruins) lost twice to Montreal in the finals and lost again to Montreal in the semi-finals seventh game in overtime but maybe Ron (MacLean) is right because since (Burke) has been with the Leafs he hasn’t lost a playoff game.”
-Don Cherry of Hockey Night in Canada. More on the Burke/Cherry feud that seems to be escalating from Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun.

Burke vs. Cherry
by Paul on 01/28/12 at 10:26 AM ET
Comments (5)
from Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun,
Has Toronto Maple Leafs boss Brian Burke had enough of Don Cherry?
An insider told QMI Agency Burke is tired of Cherry criticizing his team — in particular, his coach — and he is contemplating asking for a meeting with CBC brass to complain.
“He is furious at the comment Cherry made about Ron Wilson not applauding for the troops and for other things too,” said an insider. “He is fiercely loyal to his guys.”
On Jan. 14, Cherry mentioned during a broadcast that visiting New York Ranger coach John Tortorella applauded when the troops were introduced at a recent Armed Forced appreciation game at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
He also called a clapping Leafs assistant coach Rob Zettler “a good Canadian boy.”
But he said Wilson and other coaches “couldn’t have cared less.”

Don Cherry, Not What He Once Was
by Paul on 11/06/11 at 11:49 PM ET

from Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star,
He’s 77 now and while he still sets the agenda for our national hockey conversation, he is more of a cult figure than a trailblazer. After three decades spent listening to a remarkably consistent message, a great many people have decided that Cherry’s defence of violence isn’t just wrong-headed, but that it’s morally corrupt.
Cherry replies by adding more square-footage to his bunker. He is besieged, and for the very first time, it seems possible that he could be broken.
The not-so-secret secret to Cherry’s success as a broadcaster is his commitment to an ideal. Cherry believes in a perfect sort of hockey and, more importantly, a perfect sort of player. That player is a humble thug, a skilled brute. He does not complain or retreat. He is always the aggressor. Cherry’s perfect player is the perfected version of himself.
Other analysts and experts are professional prevaricators. They can see both sides of any issue. Cherry sees hockey two-dimensionally. That’s what makes him compelling.
He’s also intellectually honest. As much as he sets out to provoke, no one who watches him can doubt that Cherry believes completely in everything he says when he’s saying it. There is always something calculating about a provocateur. Cherry isn’t one of those. He’s a zealot.

A Sad Day When Cherry Leaves The Game
by Paul on 10/16/11 at 06:43 PM ET
Comments (15)
from Bruce Arthur of the National Post,
He is, objectively, great at his job. When he leaves the airwaves one day, he will be missed, if only because there is nobody who can replace his capacity for forging a connection to his audience, and provoking reactions like this one. He is must-watch TV, as far as hockey goes, a sort of water-cooler cottage industry. Sometimes he’s dead right: no-touch icing, hard plastic shoulder and elbow pads, stuff like that. Sometimes he sees things in the game that nobody else seems to notice. And often, I think, he is terribly wrong.
But whenever Don takes the stage on Saturday nights now, I wonder how it’s going to end. The hockey world is moving away from him, on every level — Hockey Canada outlawed hits to the head for kids, the NHL has made moves to curb excess physicality if not fighting, even visors are becoming more common. He is receding into history even as he commands the pulpit, and with every passing year the odds of him saying things that the CBC will have to disavow rise. Maybe one day he will go too far over the line, as elastic as it has been for him. Maybe one day the storm won’t pass.
And when that day comes it will be sad, even for those of us who disagree with him. Don Cherry loves hockey, and he illuminates Saturday nights across this country even when residing in hockey’s darker ages. He will leave a void, one day, when the lights go out.

Cherry Says He Was Wrong
by Paul on 10/15/11 at 07:27 PM ET
Comments (8)
via CBC,
Don Cherry apologized Saturday on his Coach’s Corner segment for comments he made recently about a group of retired NHL enforcers.
During the Oct. 6 edition of his popular intermission segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry referred to Chris Nilan, Stu Grimson and Jim Thomson as “pukes” for speaking out against fighting in hockey.
“I gotta admit I was wrong on a lot of things,” Cherry said. “Three enforcers, tough guys, my type of guys, I threw them under the bus, and I’m sorry about it. I really am.”
Cherry also apologized for suggesting that Nilan and Crimson had attributed their struggles with substance abuse to the violent nature of their former jobs, and for claiming that those players had said they wanted fighting banned from hockey.
“Chris and Stu never said that they took drugs because they were enforcers in the National Hockey League,” Cherry said. “Also, they never said they wanted fighting out of the game, that’s for sure.”
“I was wrong on that, 100 per cent wrong. And when you’re wrong, you have to admit it.”

Report- Don Cherry May Face Lawsuit
by Paul on 10/11/11 at 01:47 PM ET
Comments (20)
from the Montreal Gazette,
Sources tell The Gazette that the Tennessee law firm Kay, Griffin, Enkema & Colbert will release a statement early Tuesday morning from former NHL players Chris Nilan, Jim Thomson and Stu Grimson indicating the players are not satisfied with Don Cherry’s remarks Saturday night and making clear that they expect a full apology from the CBC commentator.
Update October 11, 2:43 pm ET: Statement from the lawyers:
“Mr. Cherry’s comments were more than inappropriate; they were baseless and slanderous,” the statement said. “Furthermore, Mr. Cherry’s subsequent attempt to qualify his comments on (Saturday) Oct. 8, 2011, was entirely ineffectual.
“Mr. Cherry’s conduct throughout has demonstrated a complete lack of decency.”
The notice did not specify what further action the former hockey players might take nor did it offer a timeline.

Here’s a news flash for the CBC: Cherry’s sorry act no longer plays with Canadians. It’s become sickening and when the ugliness is turned on a Stu Grimson or a Chris Nilan, it’s too much.
This feels like the beginning of the end. The monster is feeding on its young. Surely, this time, enough is enough.

Cherry Takes The Stage
by Paul on 05/29/11 at 05:54 AM ET
Comments (3)
from Vinay Menon of the Toronto Star,
By the time Cherry pays for his large Colombian Supremo, which he triple-cups instead of using a cardboard sleeve, he has signed two autographs, mugged for another camera and given his phone number to an ashen stranger who unburdens himself with a tale of woe about his son not getting drafted.
It’s like this all the time.
Love him or hate him — after all these years, there is still no middle ground — Cherry occupies a rarefied place in the pantheon of Canadian celebrity. The Stanley Cup Final begins this week and, once again, he will be cast into the national spotlight. He will hurl thunderbolts from the bully pulpit known as Coach’s Corner, polarizing an audience that’s expected to break records as the Vancouver Canucks vie to become the first Canadian team since 1993 to win hockey’s ultimate prize.
Cherry made his debut in 1980. Roughly 1,750 segments, 31 years and a million public storms later, the titular corner now extends across Canada. But one thing that has not changed is the coach’s mistrust of the industry he conquered and the fame he refuses to embrace.
“Television is a jungle,” says Cherry, now 77. “I thought hockey was a tough business. But this is a tough business. You know why? I’m going to say it for the first time: Everybody hopes you fail.”

Can Don Cherry Survive The Playoff Grind?
by Paul on 04/13/11 at 10:11 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
Does Don Cherry have the staying power to go all the way in the 2011 playoffs?
The grinding eight weeks of NHL postseason is not for the young. Games every second or third night. Travel. Pressure. In broadcasting, the light goes on every night for two games. Long nights, early mornings. Travel in the final rounds. While Cherry appears every second night (and usually leaves early) there were signs in the 2010 playoffs that the 77-year-old either ran out of gas or interest.
Where TSN has panels to distribute the load, Cherry’s a solo act with a high bar to hurdle each appearance. Goofy ties and Dos Equis parodies may work on a weekly basis, but they get a little stale on a nightly basis. Plus, the absence of Canadian teams means fewer fawning fans shots as Cherry gets his fix of adulation. Then there are those pesky late-night games from Vancouver.

No Plans For Don Cherry on American TV
by Alanah McGinley on 04/07/11 at 01:36 PM ET
Comments (12)
From A.J. Perez and CBS Sports’ Eye on Hockey:
He’s been seen here and there on NBC over the years and he goes on the Jim Rome Show—Smack-off is Friday by the way, clones—on occasion. His sporadic showing stateside could have a little something to do with what he told a Pittsburgh TV station years ago when they put up an image of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr on the screen.
“There’s Mario and his sister,” the NHL coach turned analyst blurted out.
Versus spokesman Meier Raivich said in an e-mail that there are no plans to use Cherry, either on Versus or corporate cousin, NBC .

Don Cherry’s not going anywhere, at least not for another season of Hockey Night in Canada.
The outspoken commentator renewed his contract with HNIC through the 2011-2012 season, CBC announced on Saturday.

“Hockey Night in Canada, with Don at the desk for its 59th season, will continue to bring the very best of hockey programming on all of its platforms to Canadians everywhere.”

Don Cherry Talks Upcoming Season
by Paul on 08/21/10 at 07:43 PM ET
Comments (5)
from Ken Pagan of the North Bay Nugget,
While the Leafs are the only one of Canada’s six NHL teams not to play a playoff game since 2004, there will soon be another NHL team in Canada, Cherry said.
“It’ll happen in Winnipeg,” he said. “I would say Phoenix will be the team. If you’ve watched Coach’s Corner, I’ve guaranteed within two years, Phoenix will be in Winnipeg. They have to go. They’ll never draw in Phoenix. They had a winning team this past year and they still didn’t draw. They can’t do much better than they did, to make the playoffs and still not draw. So they will be in Winnipeg and they’ll jam them in there.”
Cherry expects the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks will be teams to watch this season, while the Stanley-Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks will take a step back, having got rid of too many players during the offseason to stay under the league’s salary cap.

Burke vs. Cherry - Who Wins?
by Paul on 06/04/10 at 06:40 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
The two loudest and most stubborn men in hockey are claiming that all is well in their apparent war of words, while evidence to the contrary may indicate the opposite.
One day after Brian Burke said he was “sour, I can tell you that” about comments made about his Toronto Maple Leafs on Don Cherry’s Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night In Canada, Burke said he spoke to Cherry Thursday afternoon by telephone and indicated that “it’s no big deal, I promise.”
After Wednesday’s general managers meetings in downtown Philadelphia, Burke, the president and general manager of the Maple Leafs, appeared put out about what Cherry has been saying about the Leafs and Burke on Hockey Night and indicated he would have something to say after the Stanley Cup final was over.
Never one to hold back, Burke said: “We have been getting a lot of shots on Hockey Night In Canada and I don’t think the Stanley Cup finals is the appropriate place to start throwing hand grenades back.”

Melrose On Cherry
by Paul on 05/26/10 at 11:42 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
How did we end up with Don Cherry and Barry Melrose as the respective oracles for hockey in Canada and the U.S.? ESPN thinks the sun sets on Melrose, but the former L.A. Kings coach has been warming up the same tired Cherry tribute act he’s peddled for 20 years. Down to the zoot suits. It hasn’t gone unnoticed. In a recent interview with Sports Media Watch, he was asked to compare himself to Cherry.
“Well, I’m a lot better looking and better dressed than Don Cherry. Gotta get that out there right away. But I would say so, yeah. If you look at the viewership for ESPN, non-hockey fans are watching SportsCenter. All of a sudden, this guy from Canada pops up, and they say, ‘this is the hockey guy.’ So I would definitely say that’s true. It’s something I take pride in, and something I work hard to cultivate, and something that I try to convey every night to people that aren’t hockey fans.

(Don) Cherry made it sound on Hockey Night in Canada like the story was solely Europeans crowing about their success, but the majority of those I talked to in the goaltending world this week were North Americans talking about what Finland, Sweden and other countries are doing so well.
They’ve taken note—and rather than burying their heads in the sand, are in favour of proactively working to get better.

Cherry Looking Forward To Canada/USA Final

from William Houston of Truth & Rumours,
“I can hardly wait until we get at the U.S.,” he said in an interview. “I can hardly wait.”
Cherry said U.S. players made a mistake when they slagged the Canadians after defeating them 5-3 last Sunday.
Cherry, the Hockey Night In Canada commentator and radio show personality, appeared on the Jim Rome show this week during which U.S. commentators ragged him about Canada’s loss to the Americans.
“They were giving it to us (Canadians) pretty good,” he said. It was, ‘This is your game. How goes it feel? And you’re going to lose again.’ They were kidding, but they weren’t kidding, if you know what I mean.”
“I said we are going to win the gold. This was before the game against Russia. I said, we’re going to meet your guys in the final and we’re going to kick your ass.”

Country Comes First
by Paul on 01/21/10 at 08:22 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Joe O’Conner of the National Post,
Cherry was just getting warmed up when the conversation veered in another direction, one the Post had pursued in a recent article about Hnat Domenichelli.
Domenichelli, a world junior gold medal winner with Canada in 1996, has secured a Swiss passport and a ticket to play for his, ahem, adopted homeland in Vancouver. Citizens of convenience run counter to the Olympic spirit, or so this writer argued. Domenichelli was being selfish, and opportunistic, and doing a paper shuffle to deny a poor Swiss kid a spot on the Olympic roster.
Cherry did not buy that argument. Or he did, and he did not. He said it did not go far enough. He said a “Lefty” writer would never say what really needed to be said: that the problem was not opportunism, but Canada itself.
“It is our multi-cultural upbringing,” he said. “Seriously. You think an American would do that? It is our multi-cultural background. We are taught that Canada is not important. I sound like a racist, because I come out and say we are the best and all that, and somehow I am a racist. There is no way an American would ever do that. It’s your country first, and the love of your country. The only ones that really love our country are the soldiers. Do you think those guys, if they were going to play hockey, that they would play against Canada? Never.”

from William Houston of Truth & Rumours,
An apology from Don Cherry for telling a Toronto radio reporter to “f-off” during a profanity laced tirade on Sunday is highly unlikely.
Scott Moore, the head of CBC Sports, says Cherry is not to blame for the incident and in fact was incited by the reporter who was overly aggressive.
“I think the apology should go the other way,” Moore said in an email.
Moore went on CFRB radio in Toronto today at noon and stated the network is throwing its full support behind Cherry. Moreover, sources confirmed there will be no apology from Hockey Night In Canada commentator.

Don Cherry is not very impressed with neurologist Charles Tator. Approached on Sunday for comment about Tator’s claim that Cherry is a “negative influence” in the fight against head injuries, the star of Coach’s Corner dismissed Tator’s allegation with a series of profane remarks.
Tator was quoted as saying that Cherry’s embrace of rock ‘em, sock ‘em hockey on Hockey Night In Canada was an impediment to getting players to play safer.
Asked his response by a reporter outside radio studios in Toronto on Sunday, Cherry replied “I don’t give a [expletive] about him, I don’t give a [expletive] about him.”

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
Don Cherry isn’t mad as hell and he is going to take it—all the shots, the criticism, the calls for his head, no matter how much the controversies swirl around him.
He claims he is not pulling a Peter Finch every Saturday night, that he isn’t going crazy on the public broadcaster, isn’t losing it in any way. “I’m saying the same things I was before,” Cherry said in a lengthy interview. “But the criticism is worse now. It has really picked up. I don’t know why.
“I admit, I’ve been taken aback by all of it, the calls for me to get fired. Last week was the topper. I got ripped everywhere. I got ripped in four Toronto papers. Next, in a move that will only reinforce Cherry’s reputation as a xenophobe, he mangled the Caps owner’s last name (“Legonsis”), before questioning his hockey judgment in light of the team’s decision to sign Jaromir Jagr to a long-term contract…

from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star via the National Post,
Lidstrom said he’s never really had a conversation with Cherry during his visits to Detroit.
“I think I’ve said hi to him when I’ve seen him here,” Lidstrom said.
“Maybe (I’ll) check him (the next time I see him). He’s a character. He brings a lot of entertainment when he speaks.
“Sometimes he’s right and sometimes he’s wrong. I think just seeing him in his suits brings laughter from people.”

Cherry Hits 75

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,
Age has not lessened his roar and turning 75 will not mellow Don Cherry.
The controversial and flamboyantly-dressed Hockey Night in Canada commentator hit the three-quarter century mark today and he is as animated as ever….
“If anything I have turned it up,” Cherry said. “I don’t feel any different now than I did 30, 40 years ago. I still get so excited on Saturday’s that I can hardly wait for Coach’s Corner to start. A lot of people tell me to ease off a little so I wouldn’t get in so much trouble. But trouble is my middle name and I say things the way I want to.
“When the day comes that CBC wants to go in a different direction, as they say, I will think to myself that I’ve had a good run and say toodle-oo.”

World According to Cherry

From Ryan Kennedy at The Hockey News:
Sid the Kid needs to chill out: Cherry believes Sidney Crosby has trouble pacing himself on the ice, in the same way Bobby Orr did. “He will not back down and that’s how he gets hurt and he’s breaking down,” Cherry said. “That’s why he’s tired now, he just can’t keep that pace. John Tavares will play in the NHL for 20 years because he knows how to pace himself.”
Ovie has a license to kill: True, he’s the most dynamic player in the league, but Alex Ovechkin also has a tendency to hit from behind every once in a while and throws his body around more than any other star. Cherry believes this is because there’s no accountability…

Time For The HHOF To Open Their Doors For Cherry
by Paul on 01/15/09 at 09:08 PM ET

from Mike Milbury of Blogs and Columns at CBC,
It is time to elect Don Cherry into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
There is not a man on the planet who has kept more fans or made more fans for the sport of hockey than Grapes. For nearly 30 years he has kept the attention of Canadian hockey fans (and now fans worldwide) on the sport that he and they love far more than any other.
And I’m not talking about the media wing … I am talking about full fledged induction in the builders’ category.
In my own informal poll of interested fans, administrators and media types, there is overwhelming support for Don’s election. And why not?

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,
The talent that surprised several opponents earlier this season is no longer getting the job done, according to head coach Ron Wilson. His team heads into its match against the Nashville Predators Tuesday night on a three-game slide and has dropped seven of nine outings.
“I know where our talent level is, and when you’re not blessed with a lot of talent there will be inconsistencies,” Wilson said.
read more and that story was in the morning edition of the Globe and Mail.
This afternoon, Don Cherry was on Fan590 and did not think much of Wilson’s words.

This feud has been going on since the moment Wilson was hired by the Leafs. I wonder what the next chapter will bring?

Malkin No ‘Puck-Hog’
by Paul on 12/08/08 at 12:55 PM ET

from Empty Netters,
We know complaining about Don Cherry being a bigoted rube is like complaining about water being wet. It’s just one of those things that’s never going to change. That’s why we don’t take Cherry seriously and you shouldn’t either.
We actually like Cherry. He’s an entertainer. He’s an act. A very good one at that. But nothing more. How can you take a guy who wears daisy-printed suits seriously?
But this jab against Malkin is pretty pathetic. Labeling him as a puck hog is clearly incorrect.
Update 5:00pm ET: More on Malkin from Darren Eliot at SI,
Malkin seems at ease wherever he plays, either at his natural center ice position, shifting to the wing, or manning the point as he has done this season with injuries to point men Ryan Whitney and, particularly, Sergei Gonchar. Malkin is growing as the powerplay quarterback in Gonchar’s absence. It is yet another sign of his development that was accelerated last year when Crosby went out of the lineup with an ankle injury.
When I asked Crosby if he was surprised by Malkin’s calm demeanor while handling the puck at the blueline, he chuckled, noting that, “Gino is calm in everything he does. There could be ten guys out there and he wouldn’t rush.”

from Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun,
Responding to Hockey Night In Canada icon Don Cherry’s verbal punching yesterday on the Fan 590, in which Grapes ripped Wilson for, among other things, “throwing his players under the bus,” Wilson took the high road.
“I have no comment for that,” Wilson said.
But when informed later that Cherry called him “pompous and arrogant, one of those Americans that know everything,” Wilson couldn’t suppress a sarcastic chuckle.
“Me pompous and arrogant? Wow,” Wilson said implying it was a case of the pot calling the kettle black. “I just laugh.”
Update 4:57pm ET: From Mike Toth at Sportsnet:
You want a dirty little secret about the media?
We can be the biggest bunch of crybabies you’ve ever seen.
The war of words between the Toronto media and Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson is just the latest example.

The Life Of Don

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
If you liked Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, you might be interested in what Tim Cherry has in mind for a biopic about his father….
“Surprisingly, I feel that the story is pretty close to Goodfellas,” he said. “You have Henry Hill in this crazy world of the mafia. In dad’s case, it’s the crazy world of the minor leagues.
“And you have Henry Hill’s wife who kind of marries into it and has to adjust to it. Mom [the late Rose Cherry] had to do the same. She had never been to a game before she met dad. There are a lot of similarities to the two stories.”
There are certainly parallels in terms of the workplace. The minor leagues, when Cherry played, were extraordinarily violent and also populated by kooks, such as Eddie Shore, who, in addition to owning and operating the Springfield Indians, imposed medical treatments on the players.

Avery Goes Off On Cherry
by Paul on 10/02/08 at 11:03 AM ET

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
NHL tough guy Sean Avery reopened his feud with Don Cherry this week by stating the CBC commentator knows next to nothing about hockey.
“He’s a stable as far as Canadian hockey goes,” Avery said during interview on the CBC’s The Hour. “And I grew up watching Coach’s Corner, and he serves a purpose.
“But he really does not know shit about hockey.
“He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogues on your shin pads.”
