Will Erik Karlsson Be Reasonable In His Salary Negotiations?
by Paul on 04/30/12 at 02:04 PM ET

from Allen Panzeri of Senators Extra,
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk set the stage for a tough contract battle with Erik Karlsson by saying the 21-year-old defenceman will have to be “reasonable” in his contract demands.
In a year-end conference call with the Ottawa media on Monday, Melnyk said the Senators can’t go “toe-to-toe” in spending with the big-market teams, suggesting that players, and in particular Karlsson, will have to take a haircut to play in Ottawa.
“From our perspective everyone has to be reasonable,” he said.
“All we can offer is opportunity, and that is to be part of a great organization with a shot.
“If you want to be part of that, our doors are open.
“We can pay you, but it has to be within a reasonable budget.”

Karlsson Entering Record Territory
by Paul on 03/29/12 at 10:57 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Erik Karlsson has a chance to be one Super Swede.
While the Senators’ blueliner has already rewritten the franchise record book for points and is one goal shy of breaking Steve Duchesne’s mark (20) for goals by a defenceman, he is closing in on another significant mark.
With five games left in the regular season, Karlsson, who has 76 points, is only five points from breaking Nicklas Lidstrom’s all-time record of 80 in one season by a Swedish defenceman, set in 2005-06 with the Red Wings.
Karlsson, 21, has already moved into a third-place tie among Swedes with former Maple Leafs great Borje Salming, who had 76 points in 1977-78 and set the mark with 78 points in 1976-77 until Lidstrom broke it.

The Karlsson For Norris Talk
by Paul on 03/09/12 at 09:25 AM ET

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson has been dazzling enough this season that any discussion of his impact seems to include a comparison to the two most accomplished defensemen in NHL history.
Karlsson, 21, has been compared to a young version of Swedish countryman Nicklas Lidstrom because of the way he sees plays unfolding. Also, he has a chance to be the youngest player to win the Norris Trophy since 20-year-old Bobby Orr won it in 1968.
“His speed, vision, puck carrying, and passing skills make him one of the more gifted offensive players in the league,” said NBC analyst Pierre McGuire, a former NHL coach. “He is also just scratching the surface of his skills, too.”
Karlsson is seventh in the NHL in scoring with 67 points and he’s 23 points ahead of No. 2 defenseman Brian Campbell of the Florida Panthers.
“I think he plays a little bit like Nick did early in his career,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who coached Lidstrom in Detroit years ago. “Nick took chances early in his career, but he knew how to get his body back in good position. And Karlsson is very fast about getting back.”

What To Pay RFA-To-Be Erik Karlsson?
by Paul on 03/01/12 at 08:55 AM ET

from Ken Warren of Senators Extra,
Erik Karlsson is going to strike it rich this summer, whether he wins the Norris Trophy as the National Hockey League’s top defenceman or not.
Here are a few words of caution, though, for those asking Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray to lock him up to a contract for the next decade or so: Alexei Yashin, Rick DiPietro, Vincent Lecavalier. Scott Gomez, Shawn Horcoff, Chris Pronger, James Wisniewski.
Almost every organization that has been handicapped by an endless contract or two. There’s a book in there somewhere, a story of busts and buyouts and broken bones that never mended properly. Teams have been forced to lick their wounds – few are in the position of the New York Rangers, who have buried Wade Redden and his colossal contract in the minors – while the money burns.

Karlsson Remains Hot In Ottawa
by Paul on 02/23/12 at 09:06 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Maybe Senators owner Eugene Melnyk was right.
Maybe Erik Karlsson will become of the “greatest defencemen of all-time” because it doesn’t look like there’s any stopping him and the Senators judging by Wednesday night’s performance at Scotiabank Place.
Karlsson rewrote the record book, setting a franchise record for assists (47) by a blueliner with three points in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals and helping to extend Ottawa’s winning streak to four games.
Not only did he open the scoring, he assisted on both of Milan Michalek’s goals.
Karlsson’s second helper beat the old mark of 46 set by Norm Maciver in the Senators’ inaugural season of 1992-93.
With 12 points in his past five games, Karlsson pulled within four points of Maciver’s franchise points record for blueliners (63). With 20 games left, Karlsson won’t just break the mark, he’ll likely shatter it.

Do You Consider Erik Karlsson A Norris Candidate?
by Paul on 01/30/12 at 06:46 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
It was Erik Karlsson’s time to shine.
While captain Daniel Alfredsson was the star of the NHL all-star show, the Senators defenceman also received top billing as the hockey world found out how good this 21-year-old has the potential to be.
If he wasn’t already getting consideration for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman, he certainly is now.
He probably won’t beat Zdeno Chara or Nicklas Lidstrom in voting, but at least Karlsson should be on the ballot.
“(All-star weekend was) great for him,” said teammate Jason Spezza.
Actually, it couldn’t be better.

No Penalty, He’s A Diver
by Paul on 01/21/12 at 09:49 PM ET

from Allen Panzeri of Senators Extra,
However, MacLean was incensed that the Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf wasn’t penalized when he tripped Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson in the closing minutes and that referee Dan ORourke explained he wasn’t making the call because Karlsson was a diver.
“The referee informed us that (Karlsson) was a diver,” MacLean said. “We were a little bit disappointed.
“Erik Karlsson leads the league in points by a defenceman, he’s an elite skater in the league, and, to this point in time, I can never remember him taking a dive.
“If it’s not a penalty, it’s not a penalty, but I don’t think you should be accusing someone of being a diver. That’s a pretty serious accusation, isn’t it?”
