A Great Voice Has Left Us

In Ernie Harwell’s voice, the South rose again and conquered Michigan in a way no one else ever has.

When Harwell arrived in Detroit to join the Tigers radio broadcast team in 1960, he was an unknown to Tigers fans.

When he died Tuesday night at his home in Novi, at 92, after nearly a year-long bout with cancer, he had a strong case as the most beloved figure ever in Michigan.

All The Best Ernie

His voice was clear, his spirit strong, his words tinged with humor.

But legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell had bracing news to deliver Thursday: He has a tumor in the area of the bile duct. It is incurable. Yet Harwell said he feels calm and prepared for what comes next.

“We don’t know how long this lasts,” Harwell said in a phone interview. “It could be a year, it could be much less than a year, much less than a half a year. Who knows?

“Whatever’s in store, I’m ready for a new adventure. That’s the way I look at it.”

Even though this is not a hockey related story, I am sure many of you will recognize the name or voice of Ernie Harwell.  Over the past ten years or so, I developed a friendship with Ernie and wish him the best.
