Keith Tkachuk Knows What Evander Kane Is Dealing With

If anybody can identify with Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane, it’s former Jets star Keith Tkachuk.
“I kind of feel for what he’s going through,” Tkachuk was saying from his home in St. Louis, Wednesday. “It’s definitely overwhelming.”
Tkachuk has been reading about the attention Kane has attracted since moving here with the Atlanta Thrashers. And if he sees some similarities to his own days as a Jet, well, it’s because there are a few.
A thick, power forward with a heavy shot and soft hands, Tkachuk joined the Jets from Boston University just before he turned 20, in 1992.
It didn’t take long before the goals and the money were piling up — along with the rumours.
“Being in the spotlight, I definitely wasn’t ready for that,” Tkachuk said. “And sometimes I took advantage of it. But you forget that all eyes are on you.”
Simply put, Tkachuk had a reputation as a guy who didn’t shy away from a party.

At Times, Kane Under The Microscope In Winnipeg

But personal differences aside, what has happened to Kane in the last couple of days is absolutely shameful.
Some wiseguy hears a rumour and takes a sign to a hockey game slandering Kane. Someone else takes a picture of the sign and puts it on Twitter and whoosh—the whole thing catches fire. Websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts repeated rumour after rumour about Kane on Saturday with no evidence to support the claims. Posts became so inflammatory on the Free Press website Saturday night the comments section was shut down.
Disgusting is only one way to describe it.
The offending sign first appeared at a Jets game in Ottawa last week: “Dear Evander: Please stop walking out on your bills. Sincerely, Winnipeg servers and restauranteurs.”
Kane posted the picture on his Twitter account with the message, “Ha, Ha. What a complete lie this is but I really like the colours on the poster.”
The Jets were refusing comment on Saturday, but in making calls to Winnipeg restaurants I was able to learn that NHL security had conducted an investigation into the matter. A Jets executive confirmed this and stated the investigation came up empty. The folks in the restaurant business that I spoke with had good things to say about Kane.

Concussion For Evander Kane

Add Evander Kane to the long list of high-profile NHL players currently on the sidelines with a concussion.
The Winnipeg Jets left-winger came to the Jets medical staff on Friday morning saying he had a headache and has since been diagnosed with a concussion, meaning he will miss Saturday’s pivotal game with the Florida Panthers (6:10 p.m., MTS Centre) and is likely going to be out until after the NHL All-star game.
Kane leads the Jets with 18 goals and is second in points with 31.
“He’s feeling better today, but we’re going to play it day-by-day and see how he’s doing,” said Jets head coach Claude Noel. “It’s part of the game and it’s another injury for me. You have to deal with people being in or out. How long it’s going to be, you don’t know.
“It’s a fairly grey area and you just don’t know what you’re dealing with, that’s the problem. Is it going to be a few days, is it going to be a few weeks, you don’t know.”

The Media Made Me Say It

The Winnipeg Jets managed to look more like a soap opera Thursday than a hockey team fighting for a playoff spot with drama coming on several fronts.
It all started shortly after the team’s morning skate when forward Evander Kane appeared before reporters looking contrite. Kane, who leads the team in scoring with 18 goals, had been benched briefly during Winnipeg’s 5-3 loss in Boston on Tuesday and he was called out publicly after the game by head coach Claude Noel for poor play.
“It’s something I have to deal with and I have to be better,” Kane said Thursday looking downcast. He added that he had not spoken with Noel since the Boston game. “The coach’s job is to do what he thinks is best for the team and I want to be able to contribute and I want to be able to help the team out…I need to better, I know I can be better and I will be better,” Kane added.
When Noel appeared before reporters later he blamed the media for provoking him into the comments.

A Superstar In The Making

With the Twitter and trade talk behind him, Evander Kane is creating a new kind of conversation with his all-star calibre play.
The Jets forward has blown up on the NHL scene, with a scorching start to the season that has him 47th in league scoring with 21 points.
His 14 goals are fourth best in the NHL and has people league-wide discussing his potential all-star status.
Kane will need to keep up his pace and maybe even increase it to get the nod but the NHL’s hockey operations types have taken notice.

Another #9 In Winnipeg?

Some might call it a bold move for Evander Kane.
As it stands right now, the Winnipeg Jets winger is planning to wear the No. 9 made famous by The Golden Jet, Bobby Hull — provided he can get his permission.
“It’s almost like asking a father for his daughter’s hand in marriage,” Kane told The Vancouver Province. “I’ve read somewhere on Twitter that he had done an interview and said that he wanted me to wear it proudly. I don’t know if that’s true or not. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to speak to him soon. If he doesn’t have an issue with me wearing it, I’ll do my best on and off to live up to wearing that number. If I have to change, I’ll change.”

Evander Kane Welcomed In Boston

The Garden faithful certainly don’t want to see Kane lighting up the scoreboard when the Thrashers take on Boston on Thursday night, but Kane should get a warm reception regardless of what he does.
That’s because last year, Kane did what most Bruins fans wanted to see one of their own players do, when he delivered a devastating knockout punch to Pittsburgh cheap-shot artist Matt Cooke. Kane administered the beatdown on April 10, just over a month after Cooke had knocked out Marc Savard with a blind-side head shot on March 7….
“I know Milan Lucic pretty well, I played in junior with him [with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League in 2006-07],” said Kane. “So he sent me a text, told me what was going on in Boston. It was a fun time. Like I said, that definitely wasn’t in my mind at all, but I know it got a lot of attention and was a pretty big story.”

Two-Goal Start for Sutter, Productive Youth (and No Injuries!) All Good Signs for Carolina

He’s not the youngest player on the roster, nor would he be considered a shocking contributor after last season’s 21-goal, 40-point showing but Brandon Sutter is most certainly a key piece to any Carolina Hurricanes success this year and his two-goal performance in Thursday’s season-opening, 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland is an excellent early sign for a club hoping for a lot to go their way in 2010-11.
For the Hurricanes, banking on both young guns and sustained health and rejuvenation for several veterans who were hobbled last year, a player like Sutter, at 21, serving as an alternate captain and coming off of a breakthrough season a year ago, will play a major role in determining their fortune. So far, so good for Sutter, who played just six seconds less yesterday than Carolina captain Eric Staal and so far, so good for the ‘Canes, who dressed six players 25-and-under in the game and got production from Sutter (two goals), Zac Dalpe (assist) and Jamie McBain (assist), as well as sparkling reviews for 18-year-old forward Jeff Skinner from that group.

Post-Kovalchuk Thrashers Deep on ‘D’, Look to New Faces and Young Guns for Offense

For the Atlanta Thrashers, a team with just one playoff appearance in ten National Hockey League seasons (and not a single post-season victory to their credit), the time for a fresh start was clearly at hand.
By first turning a negative into a positive in moving on from superstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk late last season and then raiding the cabinet of the cap-crunched Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta begins their new era, under both a new general manager and head coach in Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay, with a wealth of promising youth and several veterans with recent championship experience.
They may no longer boast an individual showstopper but that formula wasn’t producing a consistent winner in Blueland anyway (and that alone rarely does as much anywhere). The post-Kovalchuk Thrashers appear to be headed for greener pastures, though there will be that little issue of replacing his 45+ goals, of course.

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Forwards

As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)
In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)
To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

The Thrashers have signed Evander Kane to his first pro contract, which shouldn’t surprise anyone given that there has been talk that he might make the team out of training camp. Tavares, Hedman and Duchene (the top three picks) have all signed with their teams, making Kane the fourth of the top four picks to do so.
