Garth Snow Has No Intention Of Moving Nabokov
by Paul on 02/10/12 at 06:11 AM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
“Yeah, we have a lot of belief in that locker room,” Isles GM Garth Snow told ESPN.com Wednesday. “Within the last few weeks, we’ve really turned it up a notch as a team. Our specialty teams have improved. We’re just looking forward to the next game.”
Veteran netminder Evgeni Nabokov has been lights-out of late. He’s slated for unrestricted free agency July 1, which is why his name is often floated in trade rumors, but that’s not what Snow has in mind at this point.
“We have no intention of moving Evgeni,” Snow said. “He’s been great for us. His performance speaks for itself.”
There haven’t been any contract talks between the Islanders and Nabokov’s camp, but it’s not out of the question down the road.
“Yeah, we’d consider all options, we’re just not at that point yet,” said Snow. “We just finished [signing] Frans [Nielsen] and we obviously have a few other players who are unrestricted free agents in July, so we’ll just chip away at them.”

Are Teams Interested In Evgeni Nabokov?
by Paul on 10/15/11 at 06:10 PM ET

from Katie Strang of the New York Hockey Blog at ESPN New York,
The Islanders could be showcasing the 36-year-old netminder in hopes of trading him.
Capuano’s decision was a puzzling one, especially since starter Al Montoya played so well in the team’s first three games. The 26-year-old is 2-1-0 with a 1.35 GAA and .953 save percentage.
Nabokov, one of three goaltenders that made the team out of training camp, received little playing time this preseason and was scratched the first two regular-season games. The former Vezina Trophy finalist makes his first start Saturday after a lengthy layoff; he last played in an NHL game in May 2010.
Asked if any teams have inquired about Nabokov, general manager Garth Snow said through a team spokesman that he “doesn’t discuss his dealings with other GM’s.”
Scouts from Vancouver, Carolina, San Jose, Phoenix and Columbus are listed on the Islanders seating chart for Saturday’s game.

What are the Islanders getting from Nabokov?
Nabokov is going to play for the Islanders this season, and he’s showing off his new mask. He’s keeping with the same theme on his mask, with the swamp zombie skull head, only this time the swamp zombie is done up in Islanders colors. The question is, after most of last season off, will Nabokov be fresh, healed, and ready to play, or is he liable to find himself stale?

5 Questions Heading Into Training Camp
by William Morrison on 08/28/11 at 12:18 PM ET
Comments (5)

With rookie camp beginning September 10th and full team practices beginning on September 17th, TII looks at five questions for the Islanders heading into training camp.
1. What will happen with the Josh Bailey contract negotiations?
Bailey and the Isles really need to come to an agreement before training camp begins or it could start getting ugly. Owner Charles Wang will stick to his strategy that no player will be on the team during the season if they are not signed before training camp. One sticking point in contract negotiations may be the length of the deal. The Islanders have a lot of good centers on their team and have a lot of good center prospects in their system. While Bailey is still very young at 21, he needs to begin producing in line with being the 9th overall draft pick or the Isles may be forced to go in a different direction. There has been a lot of trade speculation about Bailey and I think the Isles may still be looking to add a veteran defenseman before the season starts. If the Isles are committed to Bailey, they need to sign him in the very near future or things could get ugly. I think the team and Bailey will come to an agreement soon, but it is not as much of a guarantee as once thought.

Breaking Down the Goaltending Situation on Long Island
by William Morrison on 08/21/11 at 12:56 PM ET
Comments (5)

The three candidates to start this season:
Rick DiPietro-Last season was an injury shortened season for DiPietro and when he did play he put up very bloated stats with an .886 save percentage and a 3.44 goals against. DiPietro is by no means the anointed starter for the Islanders-putting aside his huge long-term contract. DiPietro better look out because if he is outperformed in camp by both Montoya and Nabokov, I think there is a strong possibility that he won’t even be on the team to start the season. The Islanders need to do what’s best for the team here and if they have two better goalies who are performing, they don’t need to keep DiPietro in the NHL just because of his 15 year, $67.5 million contract.

What Will The Islanders Do With Nabokov?
by Paul on 05/19/11 at 12:13 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank,
Do the Islanders want to allow Nabokov to wear their crest – even for one exhibition game – after he embarrassed the franchise and himself last season? Do they want to carry three goalies on one-way contracts? It isn’t their first choice, to be sure. In a perfect world for the Islanders, GM Garth Snow is able to move him next month for a third round pick or as a sweetener to move up in the draft. Or perhaps he could make a similar deal to his trade of Roloson to Tampa Bay. The Lightning didn’t think twice about sacrificing defense prospect Ty Wishart, a decent player but a small price to pay for the revenue created by a lot of home playoff games and the chance to compete for the Stanley Cup.
Snow will also want to ask himself if he can stomach trading two first-rate goaltenders to contenders in the same calendar year without getting a difference-maker in return. He has a strong working relationship with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. But unless Snow can pry a legit second-pair defenseman or regular-shift forward, why would the Islanders hand over Nabokov to a division rival, a contender that has beaten them regularly for four straight years? The Islanders have no motivation to do anyone any favors where it concerns Nabokov

Looks Like Nabokov Will Be Islanders Property Next Season

via Katie Strang of Isles Files (paid sub.) at Newsday,
The Islanders will “toll” the contract of Russian goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, Newsday has learned.
The team has the option to “toll” Nabokov’s one-year $570,000 contract, essentially extending it until next season, because the 35-year-old veteran refused to report when claimed on re-entry waivers by the Islanders back in January.

Nabby Staying Home
by Paul on 01/23/11 at 03:34 PM ET
Comments (13)
from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
“I think I’m going to stay home for now, I’m sticking with my decision,” Nabokov told ESPN.com from his home in San Jose. “It’s nothing against the Islanders and their organization. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just that I’m at the point in my career where I want to help a team win in the playoffs. I don’t see how I could help the Islanders or what I could do for them. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. And I hope they understand that.”
The Islanders claimed Nabokov off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, the team that he signed with Thursday. Because he began the season in the Russia’s KHL, the rules required that he clear waivers before trying to join the Red Wings.
“I understand the rules,” said Nabokov, who signed a one-year, $570,000 deal with the Wings. “We’re not stupid, we knew what was going on before we made the decision. But I made this decision because the goal was to play with Detroit.”

Options For The Islanders
by Paul on 01/22/11 at 09:12 PM ET
Comments (11)
from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Now that Evgeni Nabokov has decided to not report to the New York Islanders, what happens next?
Well, for starters, the Islanders are within their rights to suspend Nabokov. That means Nabokov doesn’t get paid and has no other options in terms of playing elsewhere. He just sits.
That scenario could simply carry on for the balance of the season. End of story.
Or maybe not. The Islanders could appeal to the NHL to “toll” the contract, which essentially means push it to next year. In that case, Nabokov would then “owe” the Islanders a year and Nabokov would not necessarily become a free agent on July 1.
The Islanders do have other options if they so choose.

Nabokov Equals Svatos
by Paul on 12/29/10 at 01:16 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The problem of course is that if he signs with anyone, Nabokov will also need to go on waivers - and in all probability, would be claimed in the same way Svatos was. It’s a dilemma because as the season approaches the halfway mark and the salary-cap dollars click off, Nabokov could be an interesting wild card going forward, for any team needing to shore up its netminding for a second-half push. But as the Svatos manoeuvres prove, often it is the team that steps up and signs a free agent out of Europe in mid-season that has the least likely chance of seeing them end up on their roster.

Nabokov to Tampa a Complicated Solution but Talk Alone Could Cure Goaltending Ills

There has been no shortage of discussion regarding the possibility of free agent goaltender Evgeni Nabokov landing with the Tampa Bay Lightning in recent days.
I discussed the matter at such length, with co-hosts Mike Corcoran and Mark Pukalo on Monday night/Tuesday morning’s episode of The Bolts Beat, that more than half of the show was devoted to the matter – a first for a single topic in the podcast’s history.
Corcoran continued the discussion in writing on his Lightning Insider page at ESPN 1040.
Both local beat writers, Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times and Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune opined on the issue as well.
And the potential marriage has also been covered at a national level, with The Sporting News’ Craig Custance throwing in his two cents.

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov has been released from his contract with SKA St. Petersburg of the Russian KHL due to what the team is calling “family circumstances”.
The announcement was made on the SKA St. Petersburg website on Monday.
The former San Jose Sharks netminder was 8-8-5 in 22 games this season, with a save percentage of .888 and a 3.02 GAA. He played in the team’s most recent game on Friday, and was pulled after giving up a pair of goals against Nizhny Novgorod during a 5-2 loss.

Hello readers,
I hope everyone is enjoying the hockey season and are gearing up for the upcoming holiday season! Remember the holidays mean the World Junior Hockey Championships are just around the corner, beginning on Boxing Day!
Now, some news and notes from various European leagues.
On the subject of the World Juniors, Team Sweden is hoping that the Edmonton Oilers will release Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson for the tournament. The Swedish rookie has collected 9 points in 25 games this year, while currently riding a three game point streak. However, the Oilers have already stated that they have no plans for releasing the talented winger for the tournament. On the bright side for Sweden, they do have the Ottawa Senators blue chip goalie prospect; Robin Lehner on their training camp roster, as well as the Phoenix Coyotes young defensive phenom; Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Former NHLer’s in Europe
by Phil Davies on 10/24/10 at 10:36 AM ET
Comments (1)
This week I will take a look at some former NHL players now playing in various European leagues. With the implementation of the salary cap, the average NHL players’ career is now ending when they hit their mid-thirties, as GM’s round out their roster with younger, less expensive options. This recent trend has led to an influx of big name players, such as Pavol Demitra and Evgeni Nabokov, heading overseas for better contracts and a chance to lengthen their career. Do most of these players repeat their NHL success overseas or are they clearly at the twilight of their careers?
Dominik Hasek
Spartak
Hasek was signed last summer after leading HC Pardubice to the Czech Extraliga championship. However, Hasek has struggled this year with a 4-10 record, a 2.80 GAA and a .898 save percentage as Spartak currently sit 18th out of 23 KHL teams.

The State of Hockey in Russia
by Phil Davies on 10/05/10 at 12:10 PM ET

The Russian National Team has taken great strides towards regaining past international hockey glory in the last few years. Spurred on by back-to-back World Championship victories with two straight wins over Team Canada in 2008 and 2009 (including a win on Canada’s home ice in 2008), Russia had seemed to finally regain their duo-superpower status with their longtime Canadian rivals. That is until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where the Russians were soundly thumped 7-3 by the home side in their quarterfinal matchup. Perhaps, Team Russia goalie; Ilya Bryzgalov, summed up the debacle best by stating that Team Canada played like “gorillas coming out of a cage.”
On the heels of their defeat in Vancouver, many of Russia’s Olympic core squad vowed to gain a measure of revenge at the 2010 World Championships in Germany three months later. Although Russia defeated a relatively undermanned Canadian squad, their efforts, once again, ended in failure with an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the championship final.

The Flyers came to this NHL draft looking for a goalie via the trade route.
Their camp took the red eye from Los Angeles back to Philadelphia on Saturday night after the draft without a No. 1 goaltender, but they made slight progress.
According to league sources, the Flyers have a verbal agreement in place with the San Jose Sharks to fork over a seventh-round pick next season if they can sign San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov before July 1, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
I wanted to reach (Don) Meehan to try and get a sense if he or Nabokov had heard anything from the Sharks that would indicate one way or the other where things might stand….
“We don’t really have any information from Doug (Wilson) at this time,” Meehan said just before the holiday weekend. “Doug is the kind of individual, I know he’ll get back to us when they have a better idea what they have in mind.”
Wilson does not discuss contract negotiations until deals are in place, but he said last week that the process hadn’t reached the point where any decisions had been made going forward on any free agents, that he still needed to talk with the coaching staff among others.
And Meehan suggested that it still might be another couple weeks before he hears anything from the Sharks.
“I had expected that I would hear from Doug sometime in the middle of June to let me know what his intentions were,” the agent said. “There’s no concern in our end that we haven’t heard.”

You wonder on every goal he allows. You wonder on every save he makes. You wonder on every breath Evgeni Nabokov takes.
OK, that last line is too much like a song lyric. But Nabokov’s lasting legacy with the Sharks is being defined right here in these Western Conference finals.
How many more games will he play in that menacing Sharks helmet? How will his final game end this season, in heroic fashion with a Stanley Cup or in a familiar sad handshake at the end of a receiving line?
Nabokov, whose contract is up at season’s end, has had a strong postseason. It needs to be stronger.

Pressure On Nabokov
by Paul on 05/08/10 at 08:49 AM ET

from Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News,
If Nabokov makes all the key saves and the Sharks push through enough goals, then they will be on to the next round, and 7-1 will be a funny piece of history.
But if the Sharks lose, and Nabokov is slightly off, then they have to go back to Detroit for Game 6. And if they lose there, it’s back here for Game 7.
Maybe that’s why Nabokov chose silence Friday — he didn’t want to go down that road, and he knew he might start if he spoke to the media.
That was probably wise, but also does nothing to alleviate the pressure, which we all know will build until the Sharks do something to end it.

So That’s What’s Wrong With Nabokov
by Paul on 03/23/10 at 04:40 PM ET

from Craig Simpson of CBC,
Evgeni Nabokov entered the Olympics as one of the NHL’s top goalies statistically, but has returned from the games a shell of his former self. His Olympic numbers were less than impressive with a 4.16 goals-against average and a .853 save percentage in three appearances.
The numbers however, are only part of the story.
In the biggest matchup of his life against the Canadians he served up a stinker of a performance. It was his worst game ever. Watching him finally get pulled from the game with the Canadians scoring at will, you had to wonder what lasting effect that kind of performance would have on his psyche. The answer - unfortunately for Sharks fans - seems to be, devastating.

Nabokov Talks About His Team Russia Exerience
by Paul on 03/01/10 at 05:27 PM ET

from David Pollak of Working the Corners at the Mercury News,
...Nabokov, as usual, wasn’t ducking questions. He took responsibility — but didn’t want to let himself be defined by one game and at one point noted he was in the nets when Russia won the 2008 World Championships.
Here’s the transcript of our one-on-one conversation:
Q: Do you feel added pressure to show people that’s not who you are as a goalie?
“I don’t think one game makes you this or that – whatever it is, a loss or a win. Your whole career makes you who you are. You always want to prove that you’re playing well, but games like that happen. What is different this game from what happened to us against Chicago, you know what I mean?

“He played the fewest amount of games last year that he played in a long time, so I don’t know if he’s any better for it. I don’t’ know if we have to manage Nabby’s minutes. What we have to manage is the results and the effort. I’m not even sure if we have to manage that. He has to manage that.”

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
On the Sharks lack of playoff success in recent years:
“For the last four years, this team has been built to win the Stanley Cup – legit, like we were right there every single year. But we were missing a little bit, something was going wrong all the time.“Is this the most disappointing year? Maybe because there’s been three previous years where we lost and this was the last kick in the you-know-where. Where do we go? It’s all up to the management. As players, we have the same mentality – we’ve suffered for so many months and now it’s time to put it behind us and go on the ice again.

Nabokov Looks Forward, Not Behind

from David Pollak of the Mercury News,
Nabokov prefers to look forward, not backward. So what needs to happen next?
Hard work and patience, is his first answer. From everyone.
Beyond that?
“Well, it looks right now we’re pretty good at a marathon and not very good at the sprint,” Nabokov said. “So we’ve got to change that by being as good at the marathon and get better in the sprint. That’s what it comes down to.”

Pressure On Nabokov

from Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle,
On the off chance that you believe that one big game has cured the Sharks of their big-line blues, let us waste no time in presenting their next issue:
The goaltender.
After having been reunited and called out at the same time, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Devin Setoguchi had their best game in weeks, with the topper being Marleau’s overtime goal Saturday night. In the meantime, the overtime would not have been necessary had not Evgeni Nabokov given up two five-hole goals to Ryan Carter and Corey Perry in the first five minutes of the third period.

Perry Responds To ‘Crybaby’ Label
by Paul on 04/03/09 at 11:34 AM ET

from Dan Wood of the Ducks Blog,
Ducks right wing Corey Perry laughed.
He said he hadn’t seen last month’s Yahoo! Sports interview with Evgeni Nabokov in which the San Jose Sharks goaltender called Perry a “crybaby.”
“I don’t even care,” Perry said when relayed the details Thursday night after he had scored the lone shootout goal in a 6-5 Ducks triumph over the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place. “I’m not even listening to that. He can say what he wants. It’s — whatever.”
Perry accused Nabokov of kicking him after play had stopped during a 1-0 Sharks victory March 15 at Honda Center. Nabokov denied it, and the NHL announced no supplementary discipline for either player. Perry had cross-checked the back of a prone Nabokov’s legs before the alleged kicking incident.

Perry Says Nabokov Kicked Him
by Paul on 03/16/09 at 06:24 AM ET

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
A 1-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks wasn’t the only thing that left a sour feeling in the Ducks’ locker room Sunday night.
Ducks right wing Corey Perry accused Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov of using his skate to deliver a kick to Perry’s arm after play had stopped near the San Jose net during a Ducks power-play opportunity late in the third period.
“Everything was over,” Perry said. “I was still lying there on my knees. All of a sudden, Nabokov just turned and kicked me. He rolled onto his side and kicked me with his right leg. He hit me with his toe.”...
“I didn’t kick him,” Nabokov said. “I was moving my legs to get up, to get out of there, so whatever he was saying is his problem.
“Ask him what he did.”

Nabokov May Have Knee Injury
by Paul on 11/07/08 at 07:48 AM ET

from Ross McKeon of Yahoo,
Evgeni Nabokov appeared to sustain a left knee injury on the final play of Thursday night’s shootout, a 5-4 win over the very game St. Louis Blues. After remaining face down on the ice as teammates started to celebrate around him, the goalie eventually got to his feet with assistance and hobbled off the ice, finally walking alone down the narrow hallway to the locker room with a noticeable limp….
We’re probably not talking about a Martin Brodeur injury here, but anyone with Brian Boucher on their fantasy team could get a little boost here in the next week or two. It would appear Nabokov sustained a twisted left knee, a strain or as much as possibly a sprain.

Modano Ready for San Jose

From Willa Ford (Mike Modano’s wife) at her NHL.com blog:
We’ve handled one big, strong, quick-skating tough team, and now we have another. But this goaltender is up for the Vezina, and they have potentially an even greater set of forwards to throw against our young D.
(I said to Mike this morning, “This goaltender probably isn’t going to like you very much in the next few days and he replied with “He’s a great guy off of the ice, but no, hopefully he isn’t happy with me when this series is over.”)
To top it off, the San Jose arena is one of the loudest and most violent crowds that I’ve ever seen in person. It worries me, but for some reason Mike loves it. He said he hopes they boo him, he hopes they give it to his goaltender and his team and his teammates because it drives him…

Vezina Finalists Announced
by Alanah McGinley on 04/21/08 at 11:06 AM ET
Comments (12)
From Dan Rosen at NHL.com,
In one corner is the mainstay, the ol’ reliable in New Jersey Devils’ dynamo Martin Brodeur. Last season, Brodeur captured his third Vezina Trophy in the last four seasons after setting an NHL record with 48 victories. This season he won 44 games.
In another corner, we have the element of surprise, the unlikely candidate in San Jose Sharks veteran Evgeni Nabokov. He has never been a Vezina finalist and had previously never played in more than 67 games in one season. Nabokov played in 77 this time around.
And finally, we have the rising star, the current and future “King” of New York in Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. This is Lundqvist’s third-straight season as a Vezina finalist, meaning he’s been in the final three in each of his three NHL seasons.

“I don’t know how many lessons we have to learn,” murmurred a disgusted Evgeni Nabokov. “Maybe it’s good that we got this out of the way early in the series. We have to rebound. We have to show poise. We have to turn it around.”
And that chronic reputation the Sharks have for pulling the chute when the going gets tough?
“It takes men to change that,” he answered with chilling accuracy.
“Some of our boys are going to have to become men.”

Saved By Nabokov

from Mark Purdy of the Mercury News,
The Sharks didn’t nab a victory Thursday night. They Nabbied a victory. They Nabbied themselves back on track. Heavens to Kamenogorsk, did Evgeni Nabokov save the Sharks’ tail fins in their 2-0 win over the Calgary Flames.
On a night when the Sharks needed their goalie to be great, Nabokov was greater. The ethnic Russian from Kazakhstan who speaks five languages might have had his best playoff game ever, in any language. But the only ethnicity that mattered to him was the Sharks’ continuing legal status as Playoff Viable Citizens.

Nabokov In The Vezina Race
by Paul on 04/03/08 at 06:12 AM ET
Comments (15)
from MediaNews,
“I think he’s going to win the Vezina,” Sharks coach Ron Wilson said after Nabokov picked up his franchise-record 46th victory Tuesday night. “I think they’d be crazy not to give it to him.”
“They” refers to the league’s 30 general managers who will cast their ballots before the playoffs begin. And this year it should be a classic one-on-one battle between Nabokov and Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.
Not that there aren’t other goalies, such as Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo, with impressive statistics next to their name. But none match the workload that both Nabokov and Brodeur have taken on, or the wins they’ve racked up.
Wilson gives Nabokov the edge based on those wins, 46 for Nabokov and 42 for Brodeur, plus the Sharks loftier position in the standings.

Goalie Talk

from Sam McCaig of the Hockey News,
Olaf Kolzig turns 38 the week the playoffs begin, and the longtime Washington Capitals stopper is finally showing his age. Among the 45 goalies who have appeared in at least 20 games this season, Kolzig ranks dead last – 45th – in save percentage, at .884. His 3.07 goals-against average is also near the bottom of the league.
While Kolzig’s stats suffer somewhat due to a still inexperienced defense corps in front of him, the truth is, he’s played far better with far worse bluelines in past years.

A Break For Nabokov
by Paul on 12/26/07 at 08:36 AM ET

from MediaNews,
Maybe it will happen on the Sharks’ four-game trip that begins today in Los Angeles. Maybe that’s when Evgeni Nabokov will lose his standing as the only NHL goalie to start every game this season.
Maybe.
“We’ll be coming off the Christmas break and then we’ve got to play four games in six nights with really only one practice in there and a couple pregame skates,” Sharks coach Ron Wilson said earlier this week. “That’s going to be difficult and I’m going to really have to monitor that.”
More than likely, Wilson added, backup goalie Dimitri Patzold gets his first start on the road.
Or maybe not.

Lecavalier earned the NHL’s First Star award for the second consecutive week, leading the League in scoring with eight points (four goals, four assists) in just two games. Lecavalier tied a career high with five points (three goals, two assists) in a 6-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 14, also matching franchise records for points in a period (2-2—4 in the second period) and single-game plus-minus (+5). He notched three points (one goal, two assists) in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals Nov. 16, setting a franchise mark by tallying multiple points in his seventh consecutive game (6-13—19).
