When Given The Chance, Exelby Plans To Be Nasty On The Ice

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Garnet Exelby is trying to work his way back to the NHL, a tough task with the well-stocked Detroit Red Wings.

But the scrappy defenseman is hoping to bring an element that sets him apart from the rest.

“I got to be nasty to play against, really physical and mean, have the other team not want to get out there against me,” Exelby said. “On top of that keep everything simple, play defensive hockey.

“They’ve got enough guys here that can move the puck and play the power play and all that other stuff, so I’m just going to complement players like that.”

Barring an injury or two, Exelby, veteran Doug Janik and top prospect Brendan Smith will start the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins because the Red Wings appear set with their top seven defensemen. Exelby, Janik and Smith will be competing to be the Red Wings’ first recall in case of an injury.

Busy Summer For Garnet Exelby

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,

If the Toronto Maple Leafs’ in-house television station Leafs TV is in need of some off-season programming, it may want to follow around defenceman Garnet Exelby for a summer.

He’s part Marlin Perkins of the old Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom show and part competitor on The Amazing Race, the popular reality television series.

Since last season ended, the 28-year-old Exelby went bungee jumping in New Zealand and swam with bull sharks off the coast of Fiji, and he visited Sweden to work on his skating with an on-ice guru.

Mornng Line

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

It was the most goals the Thrashers had ever allowed in franchise history, and the Sabres were enjoying every minute of it.

“When it’s going like that, the last thing you want is them running up the score on your team and taking cheap shots,” said Garnet Exelby who racked up 16 penalty minutes. “I saw them laughing at us. They really wanted to score that tenth goal. I think everyone in this room should be embarrassed.”
