from Jeff Z. Klein of Slap Shot at the NY Times,
Q.Henk, after the Rangers were eliminated in the first round last season you said that you felt your chance to win a Stanley Cup had become limited.
A.Yes, you do start to realize that your time is limited. I try to enjoy it at the same time — I realize I’m very lucky to be playing, and to be here in New York. But I realize, “O.K., I don’t have that many chances.” When you’re young you don’t think about your future. As you get older you start to realize you have to make the best of it. I was real disappointed last year. I was excited to be in the playoffs, but then it felt like we could have done better, starting with me. You always feel like you can play better.
So this summer I was anxious to see what’s going on. We had a lot of guys to sign. So it was big to see that we got most of the guys back, and then we signed Brad Richards. That was very exciting to see. I’m very excited about this year. There are a lot of things — the Europe trip, the Winter Classic, HBO, the home arena is a little different now too — a lot of things going on.

The Case for Number One in Goal
by Ian Gooding on 08/22/11 at 08:00 AM ET
Comments (2)

Determining a first overall pick in this year’s fantasy hockey drafts is anything but easy, but we probably know this much: the first overall pick won’t be a goalie. Yet a goalie is an important investment to fantasy hockey teams, since only two goalies can be responsible for four out of a team’s ten stat categories in many fantasy hockey leagues. The need for solid goaltending explains why many starting goalies can fly off the board early in fantasy hockey drafts.

Lundqvist Keeping Rangers In The Series
by Paul on 04/18/11 at 05:57 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Lundqvist has started 29 straight games now for the Rangers. He will have all summer to rest. The Rangers need big plays at big moments from big players, like the one from Dubinsky—but their goaltender is their rock, their anchor, their foundation.
Their edge.
“Hank was great for us, like he always is,” said Vinny Prospal, who scored on a rebound in the third to give the Rangers the 2-1 lead that Mike Knuble’s score negated. “But we can’t expect him to do it by himself. We have to give him some support, too.”
Lundqvist is 29, finishing his sixth NHL season already. It seems like only yesterday that Jaromir Jagr looked to his right at training camp in 2005, saw the rookie out of Sweden who was supposed to be a backup in his first North American season that first year after the lockout, and announced, “We have a world-class goalie here.”

Final Thoughts on Raleigh and All-Star Weekend
by Jon Jordan on 02/01/11 at 01:44 PM ET
Comments (2)
The intent of my trip to Raleigh for coverage of All-Star Weekend was simple: Get a feel for the experience from a professional perspective as well as monitor the pulse of the fans, chat up some players I don’t get to see all that often and also those I see on a regular basis in a different element, do some networking and, as Boss Man Paul continually reminded me to do throughout the weekend, have a little fun.
Looking back, that final component is exactly what I’ll remember most about the adventure and my guess is that most that attended All-Star Weekend – be they fans, players, media, league execs, sponsors or those belonging to some other miscellaneous category – would probably say the same thing.
Raleigh, as many others have opined before me, did a wonderful job as a host. The locals were as excited for the event as they were prepared, welcoming, happy and proud of their city, as well they should be. I’d never spent any significant time in these parts in the past but it will definitely be worth another stop in the future.
This being my first big league event, I had consulted with several people who have experienced something of this nature in the past in the weeks leading up to the trip and, while a few cautioned that an occasion of this magnitude could be slightly intimidating at times, I didn’t find that to be true at all for myself and I’m not sure many other first-timers would say otherwise. The vibe, from the moment I picked up my credentials on Friday morning, was light-hearted. At the same time, the entire operation throughout the weekend was first-class. Kudos to the NHL, the city of Raleigh and the Carolina Hurricanes for pulling everything off in fine fashion.

Goalies Thomas, Ward Square Off in Fastest Skater + Quotes from the Red Carpet
by Jon Jordan on 01/29/11 at 07:31 PM ET

I thought I was totally joking when I asked a couple of All-Star goalies how they would feel about a goaltender’s fastest skater competition. But last night’s first overall pick in the NHL’s inaugural All-Star Fantasy Draft, Carolina’s Cam Ward, let the cat out of the bag that tonight, my little joke would indeed become a reality as part of this year’s SuperSkills.
“Rumor is that I’m going to be doing that tonight,” Ward said. “I hope my legs don’t turn to jelly and I don’t bite it into the corner or anything like that.”
His opponent?
“I think I’m going up against Tim Thomas.”
Boston and Carolina fans have since endured some heart palpitations, I’m sure.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 11/01/10 - Plus Thoughts on Tampa’s Continued Hot Start and Stamkos Contract Talk

Perhaps you enjoyed a day of rest from NHL hockey yesterday. Or, more likely, you were angered, annoyed or even lost at some point last night, with not a shot on goal to be had anywhere. (Or maybe, even, you were like me: Incensed at an awful showing in your weekly football picks – and I mean awful – and left without the catharsis of switching to a different sport at day’s end, left only to the comfort of Dexter and his serial-killing ways… Whatever the case may be, we (or I, that is) have some catching up to do with JJ’s Three Cheers overdue from Friday and Saturday.
Now then, quickly, from Friday first:
***Cheers to Atlanta’s Dustin Byfuglien, whose transition back to defense has gone quite well in his new home. On Friday night, Byfuglien netted the O.T. winner in fantastic fashion for Atlanta, on an end-to-end rush reminiscent of legendary offensive defensemen of years gone by, to top Buffalo 4-3. (I’ll link it twice, actually, because you need to make sure you’ve seen this play.)

Is A Princess Fit For A ‘King’?

from Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star,
Apparently, New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has to wait until the off-season to score.
Sorry.
Swedish tabloids are linking Lundqvist, a Swede, with his home country’s fetching young royal, Princess Madeleine. Or, as her friends know her, the Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.
The 27-year-old princess is embroiled in a tabloid disaster, after her long-time fiancé, lawyer Jonas Bergstrom, was outed after a one-nighter with a college student.

With Lundqvist In Goal, Rangers Still In The Game
by Paul on 03/26/10 at 08:18 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
It’s a good thing that Tortorella recognized that The King is as indispensable as it gets in this league, as important to his team as any player in the NHL, and that includes fellow royal court members Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
You know, it’s strange. Tortorella came to New York with a reputation for chewing up and spitting out goaltenders. But he’s been a softie with Lundqvist, careful with his words in appraising the goaltender’s play as if he recognizes that alienating The King is the last thing he could afford.

“I think, as a goalie, you can’t think that you have to win. You have to think, ‘Just play as good as you can and give your team a chance to win,’ because I can’t really effect how we play as a team or if we score or not. If I get too involved emotionally with how we do as a team, I’ll lose focus on my end, my job.”

Lundqvist Nursing Lower-Body Injury
by Paul on 11/10/09 at 03:19 PM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Henrik Lundqvist has been scratched from his scheduled start here tonight against the Flames.
Head coach John Tortorella, who on Friday named The King as his goaltender, claimed he was simply, “giving Hank rest,” but the goaltender received extensive treatment in the medical room following the morning skate.
It is believed that Lundqvist is nursing a lower body injury; perhaps a sore groin.

Lundqvist Out With Minor Injury
by Paul on 11/07/09 at 04:13 PM ET

from Steve Zipay of Blue Notes,
Less than 24 hours after coach John Tortorella declared that Henrik Lundqvist would start the final game of this three-game trip, he reversed gears and said backup Steve Valiquette would be in the nets for his second consecutive game. “Vally is going. It’s just rest for Hank,” was all Tortorella would say, but the Rangers No. 1 goalie is fighting a nagging injury.
Lundqvist (8-5-1, 2.52 GAA) mentioned the other day that the ice pack on his “stiff” right upper thigh/groin was for something minor, and indeed, both goalies participated in the skate at the Saddledome and Valiquette left the ice first while Lundqvist chatted at center ice with Sean Avery and other players. In the dessing room, Lundqvist removed his equipment and disappeared for treatment for more than an hour. When he emerged he said that was pretty confident that he would play against Atlanta on Thursday, a nine-day layoff.

Lundqvist Must Be Better
by Paul on 01/08/09 at 07:58 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
...And, most damaging, the goaltending was sub par. Coming off one of his sharpest efforts of the season, Henrik Lundqvist was pedestrian in nets, if that. He was shaky from the start when he committed a stick-handling gaffe that gave the Canadiens a freebie just 3:05 in.
“I thought I battled back after that bad first goal but giving up five obviously is not good enough,” said Lundqvist, who watched Montreal’s final goal, Robert Lang’s hat-trick score, sail into an empty net. “I thought the team played really well, but we can’t expect to win if I give up five goals.
“I have to play better than that. I was definitely not good enough.”
Lundqvist has allowed four goals or more in six of his last 11 starts after having surrendered that many in two of his first 24. He has yielded five or more goals in five of his last 17 starts after allowing that many in four of his previous 61. It’s a troubling trend, to say the least.

from The Good, The Bad And The Duthie,
Henrik Lunqvist pulled himself from the Rangers/Canucks game Wednesday after Vancouver scored it’s fifth goal, something he has done before. Lundqvist is one of the best goalies in the NHL, but what does that say to his teammates? “I quit guys, good luck.” Let your coach make the call. No game is over these days, even at 5-1. Claude Julien kept Manny Fernandez in after he gave up four first period goals against Buffalo, and the Bruins came back to win 7-4.

from the New York Rangers,
Question: What does it mean for the Rangers to be playing NHL games on the European continent?
Lundqvist: I think it’s good for the game and for the league. We have a lot of fans in Europe. With the time difference in the U.S., sometimes it’s hard to follow it. But I mean now you can pretty much watch every NHL game. When I was growing up, you couldn’t watch the games that much. So, it’s definitely good.
Question: Will the games in Prague be emotional for you personally because you’ll playing in Europe?
Lundqvist: Well, maybe it would be if I played in my home in Sweden, especially in Gothenburg. Playing in Prague I think it’s going to be fun, but it’s not going to be the same feeling…

Tough Season for Lundqvist
by Alanah McGinley on 04/22/08 at 12:14 PM ET

From Lynn Zinser at the New York Times,
In late December, the Rangers were in a midseason swoon and Lundqvist, their normally rock-solid goalie, was dealing with his father’s operation for a brain aneurysm in Sweden. The stress showed in his play.
“It was definitely a tough time,” Lundqvist said Monday after the N.H.L. named him one of three Vezina finalists. “You don’t really think when it happens that it affects you, but afterwards, when he started to recover, I thought back about those weeks after it happened and it was a really tough time. I think it affected me a little bit.”
While his father, Peter, has gone through a slow recovery, Lundqvist has bounced back to form on the ice. He finished the season strong, with 37 victories and a league-high 10 shutouts.

Vezina Finalists Announced
by Alanah McGinley on 04/21/08 at 11:06 AM ET
Comments (12)
From Dan Rosen at NHL.com,
In one corner is the mainstay, the ol’ reliable in New Jersey Devils’ dynamo Martin Brodeur. Last season, Brodeur captured his third Vezina Trophy in the last four seasons after setting an NHL record with 48 victories. This season he won 44 games.
In another corner, we have the element of surprise, the unlikely candidate in San Jose Sharks veteran Evgeni Nabokov. He has never been a Vezina finalist and had previously never played in more than 67 games in one season. Nabokov played in 77 this time around.
And finally, we have the rising star, the current and future “King” of New York in Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. This is Lundqvist’s third-straight season as a Vezina finalist, meaning he’s been in the final three in each of his three NHL seasons.

How Weird

Imagine Henrik Lundqvist’s surprise upon discovering that Martin Brodeur had been quoted in the Jan. 14, 2008, edition of Sports Illustrated as saying of the Rangers’ goaltender, “The way he plays is not something I like too much.
“Lundqvist is weird.”
“I have to tell you, I respect Marty a lot, and it’s always a great challenge for me to play against him, but I don’t know what to say about what he said about me,” a rather bemused Lundqvist told The Post yesterday.

Rangers Hope Lundqvist Gets Hot
by Paul on 02/15/08 at 08:24 AM ET

from the New York Times,
The Rangers hope giving him long-term security helps spur another hot stretch.
Lundqvist’s original contract expired after last season and he signed a one-year contract worth $4.25 million last summer so the Rangers could fit his long-term deal into their salary cap. The two sides could begin negotiating again after Jan. 1.
By then, Lundqvist had his father’s health weighing on his mind as well.
“Henrik is, in our minds, if not the best goaltender in the league, then one of the top two or three,” Coach Tom Renney said. “My feeling is, he’s been able to keep his eye on the ball anyway, with all the issues going on all around him.”

Report-Lundqvist Agrees To Long-Term Deal

from the NY Daily News,
The Rangers have locked up their franchise goaltender for the foreseeable future.
Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers have agreed upon a contract that will keep the 25-year-old netminder between the Garden’s pipes well past his 30th birthday.
While the length and value of the deal - believed to be for six years at more than $6.5 million per - have been set, there is language in the contract that is still being hashed out. So the Rangers are not expected to make a formal announcement until tomorrow at the earliest.

Last night’s tying goal was scored at 8:45 of the second because of the netminder’s indecision playing a potential icing. The third goal - the winner -was scored on a shot from the left corner that originated from below the goal line.
“I can’t let in goals like these in a game like this; I have to better,” Lundqvist said. “I think as a team we’re fighting the game right now, and the same goes for me.
“I want to be the one to make the difference for our team, and I haven’t been. It’s very disappointing, but I’m not going to give up.”

from the BlueShirts Blog,
Not only did 2007 turn to 2008 at midnight last night, but the NHL CBA mandated a change in how it views any contract extensions or new deals. During calendar ‘07, they would be averaged back into this season, potentially hiking a team’s payroll for cap purposes.
In other words, the Rangers now can sign Henrik Lundqvist to the long-term deal that was impossible last summer when they were planning their major dive into the free agent pool.

The Value Of Lundqvist
by Paul on 12/16/07 at 08:43 AM ET
Comments (3)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
At this point, Lundqvist, Washington winger Alex Ovechkin and Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf are the three select Group IIs yet unsigned to extensions. The Rangers cannot formally begin talks with Lundqvist until the calendar turns to 2008, and when it does, they will. And when they do, they will have no choice but to accede to their 25-year-old franchise goaltender’s demands. They won’t even be able to protect Lundqvist from receiving an offer sheet by filing against him for arbitration, because they did that last summer, even though they didn’t go through with the process.
What is Lundqvist, who can become an unrestricted free agent after next season, worth to the Rangers? He’s worth pretty much any dollar amount he and agent Don Meehan request.

Funny, but when it was over no Rangers player stomped around the locker room complaining that his team lost 3-2 because it had been out-goaltended, although Lundqvist griped after Wednesday’s 2-1 victory in Tampa because he was unhappy with the players Tom Renney had on the ice when the Lightning scored at 19:43 of the third to spoil the shutout….
