Bad Goal Hurts Flyers
by Paul on 02/06/12 at 09:49 AM ET

from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull,
Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was having a terrific game Sunday until he allowed a brutal wraparound goal to Marian Gaborik, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead with 5.1 seconds left in the second period.
Bryz said the puck took a “funny bounce” off his stick and that it was like “somebody sucking the puck with a vacuum behind the net.”
more on the Flyers and watch the Gaborik goal. Score tied 1-1, 6 seconds left in the 2nd period and now the Flyers must go into the dressing room down by 1. They did lose the game 5-2.

Is Bryzgalov Feeling The Pressure In Philly?
by Paul on 12/30/11 at 11:32 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Anthony J. SanFilippo of the Daily Times,
Now in the crosshairs in Philly, Bryzgalov is not handling things well. He’s become a media star on HBO, mugging for the cameras while proselytizing on the universe, Russian vodka, Chinese tigers and the attractiveness of his dog.
Just because he’s gregarious in front of an audience, however, it doesn’t mean he’s a pillar of reliability in front of a net in a city where the pressure to win is felt before the plane you arrive on touches down at the airport.
Already this season, Bryzgalov has blamed his defense for not using the four little words of communication, stated publicly that he has no confidence in himself, said he felt he was lost in the woods, said his teammates need to be better clearing out the front of the net and dropped an F-bomb on live television when asked about how he’s playing.
That’s the very visual example of cracking under pressure.

Is Bryzgalov Trying Self-Motivation?
by Paul on 12/28/11 at 05:54 AM ET

from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull,
(Ilya) Bryzgalov lost his fourth straight on Tuesday and was the main reason the Flyers dropped a 5-1 decision to Tampa Bay.
When reporters asked him about his performance, Bryzgalov was at first sarcastic, saying he was OUTSTANDING.
Then he bashed himself and used an f-bomb on live TV when talking about his play, saying, in effect, he let the team down and has to be better.
Agreed.
The Flyers can only hope it’s as therapeutic as earlier in the season, when Bryzgalov said he had “zero confidence” and was “lost in the woods” after a 9-8 relief loss to Winnipeg. After that defeat, he went 5-0-1 with a 1.66 goals-against average in his next six starts.

Flyers Need A Better Bryzgalov
by Paul on 12/26/11 at 09:11 AM ET

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
(Ilya) Bryzgalov, 31, has had some very good stretches, but he has been much too inconsistent for someone of his pedigree.
Overall, he has a 2.92 goals-against average (34th in the NHL) and .895 save percentage (41st). He has struggled at home, where he is 6-5-1 with a 3.45 goals-against average and .882 save percentage. In games against the East’s top two teams, the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers, he is 1-2 with a 4.14 GAA and .851 save percentage.
The Flyers did not give him a nine-year, $51-million contract because they expected those numbers.
Bryzgalov is coming off Friday’s 4-2 loss against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Two of the goals he allowed were on deflections and another was on a breakaway.
“I don’t know what to do, guys,” Bryzgalov said after the game. “Maybe we should play tighter defense and box out the guys.”

An Up And Down Start For Bryzgalov
by Paul on 11/27/11 at 04:22 AM ET

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
In the season’s first seven weeks, Bryzgalov - the chatty, likeable Russian whom the Flyers presented with a nine-year, $51 million deal in the off-season - has been an enigma.
Bryzgalov, 31, has shown signs of dominance. Witness the six-game span in which he went 5-0-1 with a 1.66 goals-against average.
He has also shown signs of being easily distracted. He appeared to lose focus early in the season and labored through a four-game losing streak in which his goals-against average was 5.05 and his save percentage was .802. That left him exasperated, saying he was “lost in the woods” and had “zero confidence.”
That was followed by the aforementioned six games of excellence, which seemed to suggest that his swagger had returned.
But that was followed by a pair of lackluster efforts as he allowed seven goals over four periods - and was pulled after the opening stanza against the Islanders on Wednesday.

-Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.
Today Bryzgalov apologized for the statement he made when it was a possibility the Coyotes could be moving to Winnipeg, remember?
“Not many people live there, not many Russian people there,” he said at the time. “Plus, it’s cold. There’s no excitement except the hockey. No park, no entertaining for the families, for the kids. It’s going to be tough life for your family.”

Bryzgalov Available To Media Only After Games He Plays
by Paul on 10/31/11 at 12:29 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Tim Panaccio of Flyers Talk,
In a rather curious turn of events, the Flyers announced on Monday morning that goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will no longer talk to the media except in postgame situations in which he plays.
The chatter box had been shut down. The Flyers say this was Bryzgalov’s idea and not theirs. Yet the timing is rather curious.
On Friday, goalie coach Jeff Reese met with the media and talked about Bryzgalov’s recent play and why things had gone south on him.
Reese said more than once that he felt Bryzgalov was “distracted” by number of things, among them, his daily interactions with the media.
Update 2:23pm ET: From Mike Halford at ProHockeyTalk—
...the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has filed a complaint, according to Sam Carchidi of Philly.com. Carchidi also notes the Flyers could be fined for not giving reporters proper player access.
[In addition, Carchidi points out Bryz’s original gag order has been amended: He will talk to the media, except the day before a game and the day of a game.]

Bryzgalov Gets His Swagger Back
by Paul on 10/29/11 at 08:50 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Ilya Bryzgalov apparently has found his way out of the woods.
One day after he allowed four goals on 10 shots in a relief role, the Flyers’ struggling goalie had his “swagger” back on Friday, according to Jeff Reese, the respected goalie coach and a man who has to be an amateur psychologist, trying to get the veteran back on track.
The Flyers did not practice, but they had a team meeting at the SkateZone in Voorhees. Reese had a long one-on-one session with Bryzgalov, who has lost four in a row and has a 5.05 goals-against average and an .802 save percentage in that span.
“He felt great today. He came in with his swagger, and it’s important that his teammates saw him come in like that,” Reese said. “He was joking around and laughing, and I think that was very important. He’s going to turn this around - no question.”
Before declaring Bryzgalov has his swagger back, I’d wait to see how he responds in his next game.

Flyers Now Have Their Quality Goaltender
by Paul on 10/12/11 at 01:10 PM ET
Comments (7)
from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
“The way he plays, he’s always under control and never out of position,” center Claude Giroux said. “He works hard, and when one of your best players has that attitude, obviously everybody is going to follow.”
Max Talbot, the Flyers’ new checking-line center, appreciates having a quality goalie on his side. He had one - Marc-Andre Fleury - when he was with Pittsburgh.
“It’s huge,” Talbot said. “You just look at our last game as an example, with what happened at the end of the second period.”
He was referring to a clutch stop Bryzgalov made on Zach Parise’s deflection in the closing seconds of the period, preserving the Flyers’ 1-0 lead. They won, 3-0.
“There’s a huge difference between going back to the locker room 1-1, or it’s 1-0 with a big save and the momentum,” Talbot said. “There’s a big difference in that save and the whole game in general. That’s what a good goalie is going to do. He’s going to keep us in games and give us momentum with big saves.”

A Second Look at Goalies
by Ian Gooding on 09/14/11 at 08:00 AM ET
Comments (2)

In my previous preview of the top goalies, I had mentioned Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist, Pekka Rinne, and Ryan Miller as my top five options. Upon reflection and much debate, I discovered many other names that could be considered top 5 (or at least top 10). Many goalies are drafted in the early rounds of fantasy drafts, since top-notch starting goalies can be impossible to find on the waiver wire once the season starts. To help you find the right goalie(s), I have provided ten more goaltending options that could legitimately fall into the category of the NHL’s better starting goalies. And I promise that there will be no commercials while you read this.

From Kevin Allen at USA Today:
With NHL training camps roughly three weeks away, here is my list of the 10 players who moved this summer and will have the biggest impact on their new teams
1. Ilya Bryzgalov (Philadelphia): Fans in Philadelphia have waited more than a decade for a goalie with the ability to win games by himself. The Flyers have that now in Bryzgalov, who has posted save percentages of .920 and .921 over the past two seasons. The Flyers had no shutouts last season, and Bryzgalov had seven. He has had 15 over the past two season.

The Case for Number One in Goal
by Ian Gooding on 08/22/11 at 08:00 AM ET
Comments (2)

Determining a first overall pick in this year’s fantasy hockey drafts is anything but easy, but we probably know this much: the first overall pick won’t be a goalie. Yet a goalie is an important investment to fantasy hockey teams, since only two goalies can be responsible for four out of a team’s ten stat categories in many fantasy hockey leagues. The need for solid goaltending explains why many starting goalies can fly off the board early in fantasy hockey drafts.

from Ilya Soboley and Ilya Zubko of Rossiyskaya Gazeta,
R.G.: You are now the highest paid goaltender in the NHL. What does money mean to you in general?
I.B.: Money is just paper. Right now they’re predicting a crash in America, and [if that happens] you’re poor. The most important thing in life is knowing what you have and what you can do. If you know how to do something, you’ll always be able to feed yourself and do some kind of work. And there are always people out there who will support your ideas and help you apply your skills and knowledge.
R.G.: You’re now the goalie for the Philadelphia Flyers, a team that has traditionally not treated Russians very well. [Player Nikolai] Zherdev complained that they “stifled” him there. Does this bother you?
I.B.: Look, there was Zherdev and [Sergei] Bobrovsky. They speak very well of Bobrovsky. They don’t judge people by their passports, they treat you by how well you do the job they pay you for. They look at how you interact with the team, since it’s a united entity, and at how you behave. And they treat you accordingly. If you’re a good person and do your job, they will love you. If you have some kind of problem, it makes no difference whether you’re a foreigner or not.

Flyers Aim to Move Bobrovsky
by Alanah McGinley on 07/08/11 at 12:04 PM ET
Comments (9)
From Frank Seravalli at Philly News:
While rosters have begun to fill out since free agency commenced on July 1, just because Bobrovsky is here now does not mean he will remain the Flyers’ backup come Opening Night on Oct. 6.
Why?
The Flyers will continue to look to move him if the price is right. Bobrovsky, with a $1.75 million salary next season, will become the second-highest paid backup in the NHL on a team that usually spends to the limit.
Bryzgalov, who hasn’t played fewer than 65 games in each of the last three seasons, is a workhorse. While few say Bryzgalov would be a bad mentor for his fellow Russian, Bobrovsky would be cut from 60 appearances last season (including playoffs) to nearly 20 next season. Few experts would go out on a limb and say that would not stunt Bobrovsky’s development.

The Bryzgalov Contract
by Paul on 06/23/11 at 03:46 PM ET
Comments (18)
via Bob McKenzie tweet,
Bryzgalov contract with PHI is done. 9 years, $51 million.
Update 5:40pm ET: TSN—
The Philadelphia Flyers are banking on Ilya Bryzgalov being the elite goaltender that they’ve sought for so long.
The 31-year-old, whose rights were acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes earlier this month, avoided free agency by signing a nine-year, $51 million deal with Philadelphia.
He posted a 36-20-10 record with the Coyotes last season, but was swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Red Wings. Bryzgalov had a career year in 2009-10, when he racked up a career high 42 wins.
This will be his sixth season in the NHL. He broke into the league with the Anaheim Ducks, but was picked up on waivers by Phoenix midway through his second season.

Bryzgalov And Flyers Meet To Talk Contract

Star free agent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who arrived in Philadelphia on Wednesday, left town on Friday without a new contract.
Both sides negotiated - after Bryzgalov met with Flyers coach Peter Laviolette, goaltending coach Jeff Reese, general manager Paul Holmgren and team president Peter Luukko - and have agreed to pick up talks next week.
Holmgren issued this statement on Friday afternoon:
“We have spoken with Ilya and his agent Ritch Winter about many different scenarios.
“As for now, we both know each other’s position and have agreed to speak again next week.
“There will be no further comment at this time.”

Bryzgalov’s Conctract Situation With The Flyers
by Paul on 06/12/11 at 08:24 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post,
If today was July 1, Bryzgalov would be the best goaltender available on the free-agent market and would be paid accordingly—upwards of $6 million a season, from a team (the Washington Capitals?) that thinks it’s a goaltender away from the Stanley Cup.
Winter has been around long enough to know that as long as there are two teams interested in a potential free agent, there is negotiating leverage. He also knows the Flyers gave up a third-round pick and a player (Matt Clackson) to obtain Bryzgalov’s rights and, after failing to sign Evgeni Nabokov and Dan Hamhuis last summer, cannot afford to come away empty handed after trading valuable draft picks for negotiating rights.
The only way for the Flyers to keep Bryzgalov’s salary at a manageable $5 million or less is to stretch out his contract over seven or eight years, perhaps starting the deal at $7 million and ending it at $2 million.

...unfortunately there appears to be a very big gap between the publishing media in Philadelphia today and the days of Benjamin Franklin. There doesn’t seem to be as much interest in being accurate as they were back then. We’ll never negotiate through the press. It’s not something I do and it’s not something fans much appreciate. The fact is there will be no disclosure by the Bryzgalov camp. Anybody that guesses at this point will be proven only to be one thing: a guesser and misrepresenting things to the public.

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files,
Is he among the elite goaltenders in your opinion?
Well, I think if yiou look at his play over the last three years you pretty much have to put him there. I don’t know. Who do you consider the elite goalies in the league?
Well, I think a lot of people will say Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist, Tim Thomas. Is he in that category?
You probably have Miller, Lundqvist, Kiprusoff. Bryz, I would have to say, has done as much as those guys. If you want to start compare stats, I’m sure he compares quite well against all those guys.
Long before you got here I’m sure you heard about the Flyers’ need for a goaltender. Do you think this will finally silence those questions?
I don’t think it’s ever going to be silenced until we win a Stanley Cup. (Laughter) You laugh, but that’s what it’s going to take. It doesn’t matter if the guy goes out and wins the Vezina Trophy. If he doesn’t help the team win the Stanley Cup – at the end of the day that’s what we’re all graded on….

Who Goes If The Flyers Sign Bryzgalov
by Paul on 06/08/11 at 12:04 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Kevin Allen of RinkRap at USA TODAY,
That means a major player or two has to be moved off Philadelphia’s roster for prospects or draft picks, and it will become more challenging to keep Ville Leino, who is an unrestricted free agent.
As of this morning, the Flyers seem to have more money committed to players for next season (almost $59 million) than any other NHL team. They have 18 players signed, and notable unsigned players include Leino and Sean O’Donnell. The salary cap is expected to go up $3 million or $4 million next season.
We can assume that Bryzgalov will require a salary cap hit north of $5 million, which would mean players will have to go. With the emergence of James Van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux’s continued improvement, a case can be made that trading wing-center Jeff Carter is the most logical solution. But his 11-year contract will scare most teams.

Late Night Hockey Talk

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
In a shallow free-agent pool, he might be the No. 2 name on the board when free agency opens on July 1. Dallas Stars centre Brad Richards tops the list.
Bryzgalov, who turns 31 two days before the entry draft, had 15 shutouts the last two seasons and was a game star selection in almost 50 per cent of the Coyotes games over the last two years.
“He’s lost in the desert, hidden behind stories of ownership,” said Bryzgalov’s agent Ritch Winter.
Is he worth as much as New York Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist ($7.75 million)? What about Miikka Kiprusoff’s $7 million with the Calgary Flames? Or is more in the Nik Backstrom range of $6 million?...
Agent Ritch Winter is having lunch with Mike Comrie this weekend in Los Angeles to talk about whether the former Edmonton Oiler really wants to quit the game. Comrie missed most of last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins after undergoing hip surgery, but he’s only 30. What’s he going to do if he retires now? It’s not like he can go on tour with wife/singer Hilary Duff. “Mike’s going to wait and see how he feels and what kind of opportunities are there,” said Winter.

Bryzgalov UFA Stock May Be Falling

from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail,
With elimination potentially on the way in tomorrow’s Game 4, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett pointed to his goalie as one area that needs to improve.
“We need our goaltender to have an all-world game,” he said.
If Bryzgalov falls short again, it’ll be interesting to see how free agency plays out. The goalie market is crowded with backup options without many starters to choose from, with the only other free agents that have won more than 20 games this season (Tomas Vokoun and Dwayne Roloson) getting up there in years.
Teams have been going cheaper in goal in recent years, too, which could be an issue.

The State of Hockey in Russia
by Phil Davies on 10/05/10 at 12:10 PM ET
Comments (1)
The Russian National Team has taken great strides towards regaining past international hockey glory in the last few years. Spurred on by back-to-back World Championship victories with two straight wins over Team Canada in 2008 and 2009 (including a win on Canada’s home ice in 2008), Russia had seemed to finally regain their duo-superpower status with their longtime Canadian rivals. That is until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where the Russians were soundly thumped 7-3 by the home side in their quarterfinal matchup. Perhaps, Team Russia goalie; Ilya Bryzgalov, summed up the debacle best by stating that Team Canada played like “gorillas coming out of a cage.”
On the heels of their defeat in Vancouver, many of Russia’s Olympic core squad vowed to gain a measure of revenge at the 2010 World Championships in Germany three months later. Although Russia defeated a relatively undermanned Canadian squad, their efforts, once again, ended in failure with an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the championship final.

Bryzgalov Living The Good Life

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
...yesterday, a day after backstopping the Coyotes to a 3-2 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings in the opening game of their best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final series, Bryzgalov appeared in the team’s dressing room after an optional practice wearing a lime green, palm tree-covered T-shirt (“Caribbean green”) and happily went on about how good life happens to be at the moment.
It will be even better if the Coyotes happen to extend their lead to 2-0 over the Wings today, before the series shifts to the Motor City, on the grounds that “it would be a kind of unusual situation for Detroit, and then we will see how they respond.”
added 11:18pm, I am going to refrain from adding a new post on Wings/Yotes, instead putting it here.
from Anthony Perez of PhoenixCoyotes.com,
The Coyotes outhit Detroit 43-20 in a 3-2 victory. Coyotes Head Coach Dave Tippett said his team needs to continue to play physical but smart in order to win the series.
“We don’t want to run around crazy trying to be physical, but we want to do it, and just make sure we’re playing hard,” Tippett said. “If we have a chance to finish a check, we have to finish a check, but not finishing a check that is going to take you out of position.”

Bryzgalov Preparing For The Playoffs
by Paul on 04/07/10 at 01:10 PM ET

from Dave Vest of The Desert Blog at PhoenixCoyotes.com,
Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov knows what it takes to win games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In two postseason runs with Anaheim (in 2005-06 and 2006-07), Bryzgalov posted a 9-5 record, three shutouts and a 1.68 goals-against average.
That’s why Bryzgalov is excited to have a few more regular-season games to hone his craft before this year’s playoffs start.
“I need to fix something in my game because I start to make some mistakes (in) a couple games, and this can cost a game in the playoffs,” Bryzgalov said. “That’s why I think it’s a good week to work hard and fix my game a little bit and prepare myself for the playoffs.”

Coyotes Glad Bryzgalov Decided To Stay In The NHL
by Paul on 12/05/09 at 07:01 PM ET

from Sarah McLellen of the Arizona Republic,
Many times Bryzgalov contemplated leaving and going back to Russia. The Ducks organization was telling him he needed experience in the AHL and needed to learn how to be a No. 1 goaltender. The team made promises of calling him up, but he never stuck with the team. Bryzgalov thought he was ready and was wasting the best years of his career.
Zjenya and he talked about a move back to Russia. During the NHL lockout for the 2004-05 season, Bryzgalov even went back to Russia to sign a contract with the Kontinental Hockey League.
“But something about it stopped us and we stayed for one more year,” Zjenya said.
In 2005, Bryzgalov joined the Ducks as the backup goaltender and won a Stanley Cup with the team the following season.
“The dream came true,” Zjenya said. “We’re finally in the NHL. The next step is becoming No.1 now in the NHL.”

Bryzgalov At The Top Of His Game

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
Bryzgalov has won five of his six starts this season; he allowed just one goal in the loss. Overall, he’s surrendered seven goals in six games—only three on 73 shots while going 3-0-0 last week—and already owns shutouts at Pittsburgh and San Jose, where he won 1-0 in a shootout last Monday.
Through the season’s first 2 1/2 weeks, Bryzgalov is off to the best start of his career, with a 1.14 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage—both tops among regular goaltenders. He’s also the only netminder with more than one shutout.

Bryzgalov Trying To Get His Game Back
by Paul on 12/02/08 at 07:26 AM ET

from Jim Gintonio of Ice Chips at the Arizona Republic,
Ilya Bryzgalov says he is frustrated because he has been letting down his teammates.
The Coyotes goaltender, who helped inspire a playoff bid a season ago, has lost his last six starts, and Saturday night allowed two goals on the first two shots he faced. He was pulled from the game by coach Wayne Gretzky about five minutes into the contest against the San Jose Sharks and replaced by Mikael Tellqvist.
“You just work harder, and it’s gonna get better,” Bryzgalov said. “’I’m not mad, but I’m frustrated because I was brutal. I was terrible, and I have to pick up my game, and I’ve got to be better for the guys because they deserve much better goaltending from me than I did in the last game … Two shots, two goals is just horrific.”

Bryzgalov Makes Coyotes “Impressively Good”
by Alanah McGinley on 01/31/08 at 06:28 PM ET

From Kevin Allen at USA Today,
At the start of this season, the general impression of the Coyotes was that they were still a patchwork team, a mixture of seemingly mismatched veterans and raw youngsters held together with crack filler and coach Wayne Gretzky’s good name.
Since Bryzgalov was plucked from the Anaheim Ducks on waivers, the Coyotes look like a cohesive group of skilled players. The Coyotes haven’t just been good since Bryzgalov arrived, they have been impressively good. The arrival of Bryzgalov has simply allowed us to see the real Coyotes.

“I feel trust. I believe in the guys. The guys believe in me. I think we have a great future if we continue working hard and believe in ourselves.”...
Bryzgalov has started 22 of 24 games for his new team, posting a 13-8-1 record with a 2.15 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.

Right Head, Wrong Body

via Ice Chips at the Arizona Republic,
When goalie Ilya Bryzgalov opened up the Christmas card the Coyotes are sending out this season, he saw his smiling face.
He immediately realized that the leg pads were not his—and then he noticed that it wasn’t his body either.
Since he was not on the team at the time the photo was taken, his face was superimposed over the face of David Aebischer, who is now a goaltender in Europe.
Bryzgalov, taken aback a little at first, joked that he’d have to take somebody to court.

Bryzgalov Has Moved On
by Alanah McGinley on 11/27/07 at 04:46 PM ET

From Don McGowan at CanWest News,
The 27-year-old Russian, who had played his entire NHL_career with the Ducks, was touched when the Anaheim crowd applauded him as his career highlights were displayed on the Honda Center video screen.
“The crowd stood up and gave me cheering,” said Bryzgalov, who was named Tuesday as the NHL’s No. 2 star of the week ending Nov. 25. “This was a great moment. I started a bit of crying because I don’t expect 17,000 people to stand up and start cheering. It was a great moment.”
That’s where the sentimentality ended. Bryzgalov stopped 23 shots and two more in overtime as the Coyotes beat the defending Stanley Cup champions 4-3.
“We are all professionals,” Bryzgalov said. “We came to (Anaheim) to win this game. Right now, I play for the Coyotes, so no friends on the ice. We have to beat this team. We need the points. No sharing.”

Report- Bryzgalov On Waivers
by Paul on 11/16/07 at 11:01 AM ET
Comments (32)
from TSN,
Sources say when the National Hockey League’s waiver transactions are sent out at Noon et on Friday, the Anaheim Ducks will make netminder Ilya Bryzgalov available.
added 11:18am, from the OC Register,
“We’re making this move, first and foremost, to give Ilya Bryzgalov a chance to play,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. “He’s a good guy who’s played well for us, but we’ve committed to the other goaltender.”...
“I’ve been unable to move Ilya in a trade,” Burke said. “I’ve laid it out for his agent (Don Meehan), and told him we would take this next step. We’ll see where it goes.”
added 11:59am, via the CP,
“What I promised Bryz is that I would find him a place to play,” Burke told The Canadian Press on Friday. “Bryz is a great kid and a loyal soldier. He’s won three playoff rounds for us and he deserves to play somewhere. But I was unable to move him.
“The single, biggest obstacle was that he’s unrestricted at the end of the year. I wasn’t offered anything of value for him. But I promised him, `If I can’t get something of value for you, we’ll put you on waivers.”’
added 12:16pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprsuoff for every game this year, an indication that - salary-cap permitting - they might be in the market for an established back-up, rather than trust the youngsters that they’re carrying on their rosters at the moment.
added 12:43pm, more from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
One more possible destination for Ilya Bryzgalov, the goaltender put on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks this morning: The Pittsburgh Penguins, who’ve gotten decent work from back-up Dany Sabourin so far this year, plus some up-and-down play from starter Marc-Andre Fleury.
