Jack Johnson Contract Extension

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have signed defenseman Jack Johnson to a seven-year contract extension that will carry into the 2017-18 season, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced tonight.

The seven-year contract matches the second longest in club history.  Kings center Anze Kopitar also signed a seven-year contract extension on Oct. 11, 2008, and former Kings Great/Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky signed an eight-year contract in 1988 (after the first year that contract was extended from seven years to nine years).  Additionally, Kings forward Dustin Brown agreed to a six-year contract extension on Oct. 26, 2007; Kings defenseman/Assistant Captain Matt Greene agreed to a five-year contract extension on Oct. 17, 2008; Kings center Jarret Stoll agreed to a four-year contract extension on Sept. 4, 2008; Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi signed a four-year free agent contract with the Kings on July 2, 2009; Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick signed a three-year contract extension on Oct. 23, 2009; and Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier signed a two-year contract extension on Oct. 4, 2010.

added 8:59am, Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider with a few questions fro Dean Lombardi regarding the Johnson contract…

Question: It’s a bit unusual, but definitely not unheard of, to get a long-term extension like this done during a season. What led you to the point of getting this done now?

LOMBARDI: “It is unusual, but we’re still very much in a new system. Don’t forget, the object here is to watch these kids develop, and then put all of them within a (salary-cap) number that works. This is something we had been looking at for a while. I think it’s just the nature of the process, if you’re going to get ahead of this and take a realistic shot at keeping your young players together for the long haul. Quite honestly, this has been going on for over a month now. There’s two things that allowed us to pursue this.

Jack Johnson Showing Offensive Side

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,

Another player who impressed last night was Jack Johnson, and it seems as though Johnson might benefit from Terry Murray’s new emphasis on playmaking, including the thumbs-up for defensemen to be more active in initiating and joining plays.

Johnson was known as a strong two-way defenseman at the University of Michigan, but that top-level offensive ability has yet to show itself at the NHL level. Johnson had eight goals and 28 assists in 80 games last season, but his voice picked up a noticeably more excited tone when he was asked about his desire to be more active in the offensive zone.

“Absolutely,” Johnson said. “It’s no fun to never cross the red line. You want to get involved at both ends of the ice and try to contribute at both ends. I think that’s what makes the game fun. Just to be a one-sided player, I don’t think it makes it as fun.”

Jack Johnson Working Towards His Degree

from Jeff Arnold of AnnArbor.com,

Each summer, the fourth-year Los Angeles Kings defenseman returns to Ann Arbor, enrolls in summer school and continues to chip away at his general studies degree. Although he hasn’t experienced life as a full-time student for three years, Johnson relishes his time on campus.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Johnson said on Thursday. “If it was easy, everyone who left would do it. I’m not in a race to get it, but I know if I stop, it will be hard to start up again.

“I can’t play hockey forever, unfortunately. I will have the second half of my life ahead of me, and I want that degree.”

During the NHL season, Johnson, who is 23, takes classes online, using off-days to study and complete coursework. Technology, including video conferencing and Web tutorials, has made distance learning easier, but balancing school with an NHL career isn’t easy.

The fact Johnson continues to work toward a degree impresses Berenson.

Johnson Makes It To The Opening Ceremony

from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

To march with Team USA on Friday in the opening ceremony, Kings defenseman Jack Johnson awoke at 5 a.m. on a day between games, jumped on a charter flight from LAX to Bellingham, Wash., and hired a car and driver for the 50-mile trip to Vancouver.

Johnson wouldn’t say what he paid to charter the six-seat plane for himself, his parents and his little brother. To him, the experience is priceless.

“I had to take extreme measures to get here, but it was worth every bit of it,” said Johnson, the lone NHL player in the procession.

The Lombardi/Johnson/Berenson Saga

from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi said Friday his harsh evaluation of Jack Johnson’s old flaws in an interview on the blog frozenroyalty.net was intended to lend perspective to the defenseman’s progress, not to disparage Johnson or the University of Michigan.

In the interview, conducted by Gann Matsuda and published as part of a series, Lombardi said Johnson “never had any coaching” at Michigan and was “awful as a hockey player” before he joined the Kings and refined his game enough to be chosen for the U.S. Olympic team at the Vancouver Games….

Lombardi said he meant to give Matsuda background information on Johnson’s evolution and didn’t expect those comments to be published. “The whole article was completely out of context,” Lombardi said.

Matsuda said Lombardi never designated that part of the conversation as off the record. Lombardi did not dispute that.

Jack Johnson Is A Michigan Man

from Helene Elliott at the Fabulous Forum,

Kings defenseman Jack Johnson reacted angrily Thursday to comments made by General Manager Dean Lombardi in an interview posted on the blog frozenroyalty.net in which Lombardi said Michigan—where Johnson played college hockey—is “the worst” in terms of coaching players and called Johnson “awful as a hockey player” when he played for the Wolverines.

He also criticized Michigan Coach Red Berenson and said Johnson was unable to accept criticism after playing at Michigan and for the U.S. national team development program.

The interview, part of a series, can be found here.

“I’m a Michigan man. I’m very proud of it. I wouldn’t want to have it any other way,” Johnson said after the Kings’ 4-3 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Staples Center.

Ducks GM Denies Pronger Trade Rumors

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail:

There is some compelling logic behind the possible move – of the Anaheim Ducks’ Chris Pronger moving to the Los Angeles Kings for Jack Johnson plus a No. 1 draft choice, speculation that was making the rounds Friday prior to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final. After all, the Ducks may ultimately need to trade Pronger to get to the $46-million (U.S.) budget that they’ll operate with next year. If they can coax Scott Niedermayer back to play again and can’t trade J.S. Giguere’s contract, it may be an option they have to look at.

But for now, the official word from Ducks’ GM Bob Murray, in a short but pointed e-mail note, is that it did not happen. In fact, Murray texted back a NO (caps his), when asked if there was any truth to the report.

Certainly, there can be no official deal anyway between teams until the Stanley Cup is won tonight.

continued…

Update 4:50pm ET: From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy, more on the source of these rumors, plus the Kings’ denial:

Steve Ludzik of The Score in Canada is putting it on the line this afternoon by reporting that “the Anaheim Ducks have traded defenseman Chris Pronger(notes) to the Los Angeles Kings for D Jack Johnson(notes) and the 5th overall pick in the upcoming draft.”

Chasing the story, Rich Hammond of Inside The Kings has received a text message from Kings GM Dean Lombardi that simply said, “Rumors not true.”

Clearing Up A Jack Johnson Rumor

via Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

Jack Johnson is not asking for $5.5 million a year, regardless of what you might read. That comes from Dean Lombardi, who would probably know such things. Again, I’ll advise the same thing I advise all the time. Pop some popcorn, read the rumors, enjoy them and try to forget about them the moment that you click to another page.

The Kings are negotiating with Johnson’s agent, not his father, which is good for everyone. There’s no real urgency because there’s no need for urgency at the moment. There can’t be an offer sheet and there can’t be arbitration, so it’s quite different from the O’Sullivan stuff from last year.

Lecavalier & Jack Johnson Talk

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

The conversations surrounding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier are likely to heat up as we get closer to July 1, when the no-trade clause on his contract kicks in.

The two teams mentioned most when Lecavalier’s name comes up seem to be the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings. With regards to the Kings, defenceman Jack Johnson is one of the players mentioned as possibly being involved in any deal with Tampa.

I had an interesting chat with Barry Smith, who is the head coach of SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL - and he said Johnson’s father, Jack Johnson Sr., contacted St. Petersburg prior to the World Hockey Championship to see if the team would have interest in signing his son to a one-year contract.

Johnson Skating But Return Still Two Months Away

from Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

Jack Johnson has been participating in full practices with his teammates this week, but he is wearing a yellow (non-contact) jersey. Johnson says nothing has changed and he won’t be back from his shoulder surgery until after the all-star break, but…I don’t know. Watching him skate, it’s hard to believe he’s going to stay out of the lineup for another two months.

Jack Johnson Could Return Ahead Of Schedule

via Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

Jack Johnson was expected to be out until after the all-star break, as he recovers from surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his shoulder, but Johnson’s recovery is going faster than expected and he might return a month ahead of schedule. That could put him in line for a late-December return, but that depends on his continued progress.

All Jack Johnson

from Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,

I had Jack Johnson on the phone for a few minutes and got to ask a few questions about the upcoming season….

Question: Lombardi has talked a lot about younger players taking ownership of the team. Is that a challenge you’re ready to accept?

JOHNSON
: I could definitely see myself in a role like that. I’m looking forward to the challenge of trying to lead the defensive core. Age is just a number, really. The challenge here, trying to help lead a NHL team, is something I look forward too. With all of our captains gone, it’s time to turn it over to the young guys, with the full youth movement. We have so many great young guys. We have Brown and Kopi and O’Sullivan, and guys coming up who have had some time, like Boyle and Purcell. The young guys are going to be a big part of the team now.

All Jack Johnson

from Inside the Kings,

(Jack) Johnson is back home in Michigan enjoying his summer and took a few minutes to talk about his first full season in the NHL…

Question: It seemed at times last season like you might have been holding back a little, playing things conservatively, that at any moment we were going to see some end-to-end rushes or bone-jarring clips like we have seen on YouTube that made you semi famous. Were you in fact holding back a bit last year?

Johnson: I was just kind of feeling things out, and yeah, there were times where I felt like I was holding back and hesitating a little bit. I think it is all about getting some confidence a getting a feeling for the game. It is a lot harder coming in to this league as a defenseman than it is for a forward. The mistakes you make as a defenseman are magnified than when you make them as a forward.

King for a Day

From Chris Zelcovich at The Star,

“I was telling him about how even though he has cerebral palsy and is one of the smallest guys on the team, he’s one of our best players,” says Peddle. Then he said that Johnson was his hero.

Peddle’s father, who winters in Tampa, mentioned he lived next door to Johnson’s godfather, Jeff Horne. A few phone calls later, the rendezvous was set up after Horne learned that Hill was taking Desmond to L.A. to visit his aunt and attend Thursday’s game against the Maple Leafs.

Johnson says he jumped at the opportunity to meet Desmond when Horne called him.

“I had trouble believing anyone in Canada liked me,” Johnson says with a laugh, referring to some of the devastating hits he registered against Team Canada while playing for the U.S. at the world junior tournament in 2006. “When I heard he had cerebral palsy but was playing with older boys I thought I had to meet him.”

Rob Blake On Jack Johnson & The Kings

from Rich Hammond at Inside the Kings,

Q: Can you talk a little about your relationship with Jack Johnson? You’re expected to mentor him. What’s that been like so far and what do you see from him?

A: You see the competitive nature. Obviously coming in last year for a handful of games, you saw how competitive he was and how much he wanted to battle. I think he understands that his college career is done and now the next step is to play professional hockey.

He’s trained hard this summer, he’s been to a couple different camps and he’s here expressing himself and knowing that he’s going to be a big part of this team. From the older guys’ perspective, he probably can show more things off the ice.

He understands that he’s going to compete on the ice, but it’s a long season and you do need a little guidance throughout that.
