via the Flyers website,
Prior to the Flyers taking the ice for their morning skate in Nashville, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced that forward James van Riemsdyk will be out indefinitely with a concussion.
“James was hit in the head in each of our last two games. He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion,” said Holmgren.

van Riemsdyk In The Doghouse?
by Paul on 11/04/11 at 09:15 AM ET

from Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News,
He arrived at the Wells Fargo Center at his normal time last night, fully expecting to play in last night’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Devils. He kept to his normal pregame ritual. He took part in the Flyers’ pregame warmups, skating on his line with Danny Briere and newcomer Sean Couturier.
Then, van Riemsdyk was scratched from the lineup without explanation.
According to a team source, speaking to the Daily News last night on a condition of anonymity, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was “especially critical” of van Riemsdyk’s performance on Wednesday night - despite the fact that he scored a highlight-reel goal against the Sabres - and called him out during a team meeting.
Officially, the Flyers said van Riemsdyk is “day-to-day” with a nondescript “lower-body injury.”

It’s been about 24 hours since James van Riemsdyk signed his monster six-year, $25.5 million deal for the Philadelphia Flyers. After just 11 pressure packed playoff games in which he led the offense, he’s been given an extension that will make him the forward with the longest contract, forgoing four years of RFA eligibility in the process.
Let’s break it down before he gets traded.

Too Much For JVR?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
If you’re wondering what two middling seasons in the NHL is worth, check out James van Riemsdyk’s new six-year extension in Philadelphia.
The 22-year-0ld Flyers’ winger had 35 points his first full season and 40 last year. He just got $4.25 million a year, for six seasons from Flyers’ owner Ed Snider, who has money to burn because he also owns the cable giant Comcast. This is a giant leap of faith for a kid who has size (6’3″, 200 pounds) and skill but has blown by the intermediate stage in salary….
All we know is, GM’s on other teams with similiar young players must be privately cursing the Flyers because agents will certainly use the JVR deal as their comparable. Van Riemsdyk, the second player chosen in the 2007 draft after Patrick Kane, has talent. But has he really done enough to warrant this sudden largesse?

Lappy Goes Hollywood

From Dan Gross at Philly.com:
WHEN A Flyers official heard that “40-Year-Old Virgin” director Judd Apatow was looking for a hockey player with no teeth for his new movie, he knew just who to recommend: Ian Laperriere.
The injured winger jumped at the opportunity and enlisted teammates Scott Hartnell, Matt Carle and James van Riemsdyk to join him in Hollywood for a 16-hour-day shoot in Apatow’s “This is Forty.”
The guys portray hockey players who hit up a bar after a game and end up dancing and somehow playing with Lappy’s false teeth.
“I made a fool of myself, but it was fun,” Lappy told us yesterday. “I like to try different things.”
continued… (And check out Puck Daddy for a terrifying movie poster idea.)

ECF Preview? East’s Best, Flyers and Lightning Duke it Out in Tampa

“Playoff atmosphere”…
“Statement game”…
Two overused hockey clichés, yes, but each applied to last night’s tilt between the Eastern Conference’s top two clubs, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It was, without a doubt, a playoff-type atmosphere at the St. Pete Times Forum, in a back-and-forth, physical affair that resulted in the virtual tie of a shootout victory for Philadelphia.
And the statement that was made in Philly’s 4-3 win is that both of these clubs are for real, each a legitimate contender when the postseason hits, and that a playoff series between the two would be intensity at its best.

Will van Riemsdyk Get The Message?

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
There are no immediate plans for James van Riemsdyk’s return, but when he does come back, coach Peter Laviolette wants the young Flyers winger to take his benching personally.
“When James gets back in there, you hope it burns him a little bit to be out of the lineup and he comes back with revitalized energy, like Z [Nik Zherdev] did, and makes it a point to show he shouldn’t have come out of the lineup - and shouldn’t come out anymore,” Laviolette said this week in a conference call with reporters.
Getting back in the lineup, however, won’t be so simple. Andreas Nodl’s strong play could keep the 21-year-old van Riemsdyk sidelined for a while. He has been a healthy scratch the last two games.
“There are tough decisions to be made,” said Laviolette, whose Flyers play his former team, the Carolina Hurricanes, on Thursday. “You’re trying to win hockey games every night. James got caught in a numbers game. He’s got to continue to practice hard, and when he gets that opportunity and gets get back in there . . . you want to make it a point to let everyone know that [a benching] is not going to happen again.”

James van Riemsdyk Bulks Up, Hopes To Be More Consistent
by Paul on 09/20/10 at 08:37 AM ET

from Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
For James van Riemsdyk, it’s all about consistency.
The Flyers’ second-year left winger wants to improve his production, and it’s showing in his high-intensity performances during the first two days of training camp at Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees.
“I made a really good transition [to the NHL] off the bat,” he said. “But I don’t know what it was. Maybe it could have been a little bit of mental, a little bit of physical. Towards the second half of the year, I started to struggle a little bit and maybe wasn’t as consistent as I was earlier on.”
The second overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft finished his up-and-down rookie season with 15 goals and 35 points.
Not satisfied with those numbers, van Riemsdyk spent the summer in Darien, Conn., working on his strength. He added only six pounds to his now 206-pound frame, but he bulked up.
“You could either use that experience you had to be comfortable, or get right back to work,” he said of his decision to train over the summer. “And my approach was to get right back to work.”

James van Riemsdyk Should Start The Season In AHL
by Paul on 09/23/09 at 08:55 AM ET

from Anthony SanFilippo of the Daily Times,
He has been touted as the next John LeClair, a big-bodied American power forward with a nose for the net.
His arrival has been greatly anticipated. He already goes by a nickname to most supporters — his initials, JVR.
He holds the promise of a great future. And considering the moves the Flyers made this offseason, bringing in veterans like Chris Pronger, a team-oriented grinder like Ian Laperriere, and an emotional goalie like Ray Emery, the organization believes that future is now.
Which is why van Riemsdyk would be better served starting the season in the American Hockey League with the Adirondack Phantoms.
