Langenbrunner Out With Possible Groin Injury

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner did not make the trip with the Devils to North Carolina and will miss at least the next two games of the team’s Eastern Conference quarterfinal against the Hurricanes with a suspected groin injury.

The Devils are still calling it a “lower-body injury.”

Langenbrunner was injured in the second period of a 2-1 overtime loss in Game 2 on Friday night.

“Jamie Langenbrunner will not be with us on this trip,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said. “He’ll be out these next couple of games and we’ll see how he is when we get back. But he’s not out of the first round at this point.”

“It’s going to be a day-by-day situation, but he definitely will not be on this trip.”

Friday Night Injury Report

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner suffered an undisclosed injury and the Flyers defeated the Devils 5-3 tonight at Prudential Center.

Langenbrunner headed to the Devils’ locker room with the trainer after taking a hard hit from Flyers defenseman Luca Sbisa along the right wing boards in the Philadelphia zone 7:55 into the second period. It appeared Langenbrunner had a left leg injury, but it was difficult to tell.

With 11:38 left in the second period, Rangers coach Tom Renney was clipped on the left side of the head by Rostislav Klesla’s stick during a scrum at the bench.

He went down to the floor, an official said between the second and third period, may have lost consciousness, was assisted off the ice and was being X-rayed. Assistants Mike Pelino and Perry Pearn took over. Renney did not return before the end of the period.

A Rangers spokesman said during the intermission that Renney “was OK. He was hit on the top of the head.”

St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace suffered what the team called a lower-body injury Friday and did not return for the second period against the Los Angeles Kings.

Legace may have been injured when he slipped on a piece of carpeting coming out for pregame warmups. The carpet was on the ice for a pregame ceremony involving Republic vice-presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin.

More Playoff ‘Red’

from Fire & Ice,

[Jamie Langenbrunner] had on his official “Rock Your Red” T-shirt for this morning’s media availability at The Rock following a team meeting and did several television interviews with it on. “I’m Rockin the Red,” he said, though he had to endure some ribbing from his teammates.

More than one player expressed displeasure that fans have to buy the T-Shirts and won’t be get them for free at the game tonight. Their first concern, obviously, is with gettign ready for the Rangers tonight. All of them, including the coach, were itching for the puck to drop.

“I’m anxious to get going,” Sutter said. “I wish this game would have been played last night, our first game. I’m like everybody on the team, just anxious to get it started. You go through a whole season, an 82-game season, and there’s ups and downs, peaks and valleys, to set yourself up to play playoff hockey and we’re there now and I’m excited about it, anxious to get it going and I’m excited for the players. That’s what it’s all about.”

Langenbrunner to be Named Devils Captain

From Tom Gulliti at Fire & Ice,

There appears to be a slim chance it will happen before tonight’s game against Boston or it might not be until later this week, but the Devils are about to name Jamie Langenbrunner as their captain.

The usually-talkative Langenbrunner became extremely tight-lipped when asked this morning if he had been given the captaincy.

“Something will happen soon,” he said. “Let’s just leave it at that.”

What would it mean to Langenbrunner if he were named captain?

Update 6:37pm ET: Langenbrunner is now officially the captain, it appears. Gulliti updates that he was wearing the “C” in warmups. (*thanks to a KK reader for pointing it out...)

Langenbrunner Could Miss Significant Time

from the NY Post,

As revealed in Saturday’s Post, Langenbrunner tried a rest cure all summer for the injury he now admits was initially suffered in February. It recurred this month, keeping him out of training camp.

Recovery times vary and surely will depend on the injury itself, but he could be out 6-8 weeks, then require significant time to regain full fitness. His summertime rest cure prevented his usual training regimen, leaving him out of game shape, and further behind following surgery.

Langenbrunner, 32, said he wishes he’d gone straight for surgery during the offseason.

Langenbrunner May Be Facing Surgery

from the NY Post,

Langenbrunner, who played each of the Devils’ 93 regular-season and postseason games last season said little after sitting out yesterday’s opening camp workout. Sources, however, claim he tried a rest cure all summer for what the Devils call a “groin” injury, only to have it recur this month.

Surgery appears a real possibility for the 32-year-old, who apparently played for months with the injury last season, stretching his current streak to 144 straight games. Langenbrunner was third on the team with 60 points and 23 goals last season.
