Briere Concussed, Jagr Aggravates Groin

from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull at the Philadelphia Inquirer,

For the Flyers, the all-star break cannot come fast enough.

Center Danny Briere suffered a concussion in the Flyers’ 4-1 win in New Jersey Saturday and is out indefinitely.

Late in the first period, Briere was flattened by Anton Volchenkov. Briere did not know if that was when he was injured; he was also hit by Patrik Elias in the third period.

Briere is the sixth Flyer to have a concussion this season, following Chris Pronger, Brayden Schenn, Matt Read, Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk.

Veteran right winger Jaromir Jagr re-aggravated a groin injury in the firt period and did not return to the game.

All Jaromir Jagr

from Randy Miller of Flyer Files at the CourierPost,

Your agent was in town this week. Anything going on?

“No. I think it’s too early. It’s only 40-some games into the season.”

Are you interested in returning to Philly next season? So far, you’ve always said you’ll wait until after the season.

“The question is am I going to help here. I don’t want to be somewhere where I can’t help. I thought I’d be on a good team, but there are a lot of good players here.

You’re on the first line.

“So far.”

Do you want to play in NHL next season?

“Of course I want to play. I’ll see what happens.

Jagr Would Rather Be Warm

from Randy Miller of the Courier Post,

“You know, it’s so funny to me — everybody is so happy here to play outside,” Flyers right wing Jaromir Jagr said. “When I was a kid, I played outside all the time and I was so happy to play inside. I think I’m the only guy who is upset about it.”

Not quite. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov feels the same way. When asked if he’s looking forward to the Winter Classic, the Russian said, “I don’t have any feelings. I don’t care.”

Like Bryzgalov, Jagr had his fill of outdoor hockey as a child in Eastern Europe.

“Until 15 years old, a lot of our arenas weren’t closed, so you played outside,” said Jagr, a Czech. “Trust me, it’s a lot better to be inside.”

“The Penguins Still Are Better Off Without Jagr”

from Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins still are better off without Jagr.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it, ridiculous as it must seem on the day after Jagr and the Flyers were the better team for the second time in three weeks, this time, thanks in large part to Jagr’s goal, which put the Flyers ahead to stay, 2-1, in the second period, and an empty-netter at the end by old pal Max Talbot.

“Why worry about a 40-year-old guy? The biggest mistake [Penguins] management made [during the summer] was they should have signed Max,” Jagr said after the game in a fairly typical, disingenuous moment.

The Penguins couldn’t match the Flyers’ five-year, $9 million offer to Talbot, and Jagr knows it.

But his quote made for a good sound bite and made a lot in the media giggle.

Please.

The Older Jagr

from Jeff Z. Klein of the New York Times,

Jaromir Jagr just keeps reinventing himself, over and over.

Fun-loving scoring prodigy, anti-Soviet Czech nationalist, champion, moping quitter, maturing superstar, enthusiastic Russophile. Now, four games into his return to the N.H.L. with the Philadelphia Flyers after three years in the Kontinental Hockey League, Jagr is reinvented again, as wise elder statesman and exemplar of hard work.

He is not the only one to change since he last played in North America, in 2008. The league he came back to also has a new look.

“How to explain it?” he mused in his still heavily Czech-accented English. “It’s different for one reason. The puck is everywhere. Not as much on your stick. The players don’t play the position game as much as we used to play. A lot of young guys go up and down, shoot the puck, go for the rebounds.

“You’re getting tired quicker because the body has to react where the puck is going to go,” he said of the faster, more frenetic N.H.L. of 2011. “You cannot read it, because you don’t have the puck on your stick.”

Jagr Getting Used to the NHL Again

From Mike G. Morreale at NHL.com:

Following a three-year stint with Avangard Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League, the Flyers signed Jagr to a one-year deal worth $3.3 million on July 1.

“I just want (to use this time to) getting used to the North American rinks (again),” Jagr told the media in Detroit on Friday. “The North American game and European game are two totally different games with the same rules. You have to skate a lot more, skate differently and you cannot be that aggressive. Most of the teams play the trap (in the NHL), and it’s more aggressive in Europe.”

Can Jagr Handle Being In ‘Two’ Places At Once?

from Sean Carney of Emerging Europe at the Wall Street Journal,

But what is more telling about his future is his taking ownership of the Czech professional hockey team in his hometown Kladno just a few months ago. He’s given the team a financial boost estimated at around $2 million, found a generous sponsor and this week presented the team’s new look and name, The Knights.

Mr. Jagr said hometown fans will see him on the ice shortly and wasn’t humble about his aspirations.

“I think I’ll play with Kladno in a year or two and I hope to help lead the team to the title after a long time,” he said. And while he’ll be busy trying to score for the Flyers this upcoming season, Mr. Jagr said he’ll also be helping co-manage Kladno in real-time using live Internet streams of The Knight’s games.

Upcoming Milestones

From John Kreiser at NHL.com:

Here’s a look at some players who have a good chance to reach individual milestones during the 2011-12 season:

500 goals: Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames

Calgary’s captain and all-time scoring leader passed the 1,000-point mark late last season. He starts the new season with 484 goals after finishing third in the NHL with 43 in 2010-11—his best season since getting 50 in 2007-08. He was the top scorer among active players until Jaromir Jagr (646) signed with Philadelphia after three seasons in Russia.

With 10 consecutive seasons of 30 or more goals, there would appear to be little doubt that Iginla will get the 16 he needs to become the 42nd player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal mark.  [...]

1,000 assists: Jaromir Jagr, Philadelphia Flyers

Reaching 1,000 assists is a lot harder than scoring 500 goals…

Does The Signing Of Jagr Make The Flyers Stanley Cup Favorites?

from Mike Bertha of the Philly Post,

In 2011-12, he’ll don a sweater of orange and black and hope to play his role in ushering in a new era of Philly hockey—one where the goaltending is consistent, the partying is out of the press, the wins are frequent and the losses are few and far between. An era where a Jaromir Jagr goal leaves Rangers and Pens fans rolling their eyes and throwing their arms up in futility and disgust. An era where, for the first time in 37 years, Lord Stanley’s Cup is in Philly and the Flyers float down Broad Street.

Holmgren Talks About Philly’s Moves Today

From the Philadelphia Flyers site, a media Q&A with Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren tonight:

Q: What went into the Jagr signing?

“Well, obviously it sort of just started innocently yesterday.  I just sent a text to Petr Svoboda, his agent, who also represents Jake Voracek, and I didn’t know who was involved.  I read over the last few days it was just Detroit and Pittsburgh were the teams, so I just sent him a text about if Jaromir would have interest in playing for Philadelphia and it just kind of went from there, and culminated today with our signing of him.  So we’re excited to have Jaromir.  He’s going to bring a lot of leadership and we still believe he’s a guy that’s capable of putting up a fair amount of points.  We’re excited to have him.”

Why The Penguins Need Jagr

from Mark Madden at the Beaver County Times,

Jagr offers an intangible no other potential acquisition does: He may be 39, but still thinks like a superstar, sees the game like a superstar.

Too many passes made by Crosby and Malkin slide harmlessly past teammates of lesser mentality. Too many opportunities go wasted because of mismatched hockey sense. Jagr thinks hockey like Crosby and Malkin.

Crosby is a free agent in 2013, Malkin in 2014. Are those two willing to be indefinitely flanked by sub-par wingers?

The ineptitude of the Penguins’ power play contributed mightily to their first-round playoff loss to Tampa Bay. Neither Crosby nor Malkin is particularly gifted on the man-advantage, so their absences mattered little in that regard. The Penguins’ PP lacks (and has, for three seasons) confidence, creativity and structure.

Jagr brings all three. He can operate with equal efficiency on either half-wall. Jagr would help the power play like none of the other options could.

Agent: Jagr’s NHL Negotiations Not About Leveraging KHL

From Sporting News:

Jaromir Jagr continues to discuss an NHL return with the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, but the talks are not meant as a means of getting a large offer from a Russian team, his agent told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

“It’s absolutely not true,” Petr Svoboda said when presented with the leverage theory. “I’ve heard that, but it’s not true. I mean, there’s always that option if things don’t work out with (the NHL), but this is not about trying to get more money from (the KHL). I know Jags wants to come back to the NHL and for the right reasons.”

Svoboda expected Jagr to speak with Penguins owner and former teammate Mario Lemieux on Wednesday…

Evening Line

Hypothetically, you’re talking about a guy in his last year in the National Hockey League had 75 points. That’s leading our team last year. That’s an intriguing thing to think about. He’s a power-play guy. What you saw him do in the World Championship against NHL-caliber players was nothing short of outstanding on a bigger ice surface. Those are intriguing things to think about hypothetically. It’s tough not to think about adding 75 points to your roster if it’s something you’re capable of doing.

How Much Will An NHL Team Pay Jagr?

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Jaromir Jagr appears NHL-bound and it’s only a question of which team he’ll sign with, his agent told ESPN.com on Tuesday morning.

Agent Petr Svoboda said Pittsburgh, Detroit “plus another team I can’t name” are the three options for his veteran client.

“We have to make a decision soon,” Svoboda said from the Czech Republic.

Svoboda said Jagr would sign a one-year deal with one of those three NHL teams. He also said a decision should be made within the next few days, perhaps as early as Tuesday. Jagr met all day with Svoboda on Monday and the two were slated to meet again later Tuesday.

Shero Talks Jagr & Crosby

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Shero, who is meeting with the amateur scouting staff this week at Consol Energy Center, suggested Tuesday that Jagr won`t be courted to play for the Penguins next season and stressed that Crosby`s reported postseason setback was really just a slight “step back” along his recovery from a concussion.

On Jagr, who has talked over the past several days of resuming his NHL career, possibly with his original team: “I don`t understand where all this came from,” Shero said. “Jagr is not a guy we`ve spoken about in a couple of years. We talked about him for a little bit after his time with the Rangers (July 2008), but that`s about it.”...

Regarding Crosby, who did not play for the Penguins after Jan. 5, and has not been cleared by team doctors to resume practicing, Shero is bemusedly unfazed by that development.

“Cleared for what, to be on vacation?” Shero said. “He`s been away, out of the country on vacation, and hopefully having a good time. There`s no rush in terms of having a deadline to have him cleared for whatever. In this case the break will probably do him well.”

Would Jagr Be A Fit In Montreal?

from Arpon Basu of CTV Montreal,

Now, having established the potential ulterior motives in Jagr’s public comments and trying to establish the level of his play in Russia, we need to figure out if he would be a fit in Montreal.

While everyone sees Jagr playing on a line with Plekanec and Mike Cammalleri, I really don’t see that happening over 82 games. No, I would see Jagr filling a third line role with limited minutes, perhaps with David Desharnais and/or Lars Eller, while serving as a weapon on the power play. Would Jagr be willing to play such a role? Would he come to Montreal if he wasn’t guaranteed to play with Plekanec on a regular basis? I’m not sure he would.

But if he was willing to do that – and also willing to play by Jacques Martin’s system and also willing to defer to the established leadership group and not rattle the Canadiens dressing room chemistry too much – then I see no reason why Jagr would not be a welcome addition in Montreal.

Jagr Makes Sense For Penguins

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Connecting the various dots, it would appear that the Penguins are interested in mending fences with Jaromir Jagr , and that Jagr is interested in returning to the NHL. Add into that his hat trick Wednesday against the United States in Slovakia and, man, that sure sounds to me like a connection worth making.

In fact, it sounds like a win-win-win.

But let me start with this: No, this would not be an Alexei Kovalev type of situation. Jagr long ago adjusted his game away from beating guys one-on-one to more of a stationary shooter. He started that with the Rangers and carried it over to Russia. And, from watching him up close in Vancouver last winter at the Olympics, I can offer that there is absolutely no question he would continue to be an impact player in the NHL, even if he is not the mullet-headed, stickhandling wizard so many of us recall. There were many hockey executives there shaking their heads that he was wasting his time in Russia rather than adding to his points and legacy in the NHL.

Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II

This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.

Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk

Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.

Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava

Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

Jagr Staying In The KHL

from Peter Adler at The Cult of Hockey,

Just before departing for Prague to join Team Czech for the world championships, Jaromir Jagr signed a one-year contract with Avangard Omsk. This extends his stay in the Siberian city to three consecutive seasons. Jagr said Monday he didn’t consider any other teams and negotiated with Omsk only.

“If it didn’t work out there, I’d have to start looking at other options. But I just didn’t want to be engaged in multiple negotiations that would force me eventually to decide which direction to take.”

Is Jagr A Fit In Edmonton?

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal answers some questions from readers and this one is about the Oliers signing Jagr…

I would say the organization is torn right now because they are in a rebuild. Do they really want to spend $4 million on a 38-year-old player who certainly isn’t the offensive threat he used to be?

That said, Jagr looked fine in the Olympics, but for getting clobbered in the open ice and knocked for a loop by Alexander Ovechkin. I did notice his cycling along the boards is a little shorter than it used to be. He runs out of gas a little quicker now, but what player his age doesn’t?

I do believe Jagr would be very good for Hemsky, who says he used to be a left-winger, so could move over if Jagr came on board. What Jagr reportedly wants however, is a package deal. He also wants the Oilers to sign Czech Olympian forward Roman Cervenka, who is an emerging star in the Czech League but on the smallish side and looked like he was over his head at the Olympics.

Jagr Missed At Mellon Arena Reunion

from Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

It wasn’t the same without Jaromir Jagr.

Jagr was extended an invitation, but was one of a number of members from the Penguins’ first two Stanley Cup champions who couldn’t attend. Neither could Tom Barrasso, Scotty Bowman, Ron Francis, Joe Mullen, Mark Recchi, Kevin Stevens or Rick Tocchet, all important ingredients.

“That’s what it takes to make a championship team,” said Ken Schinkel, the former Penguins player and coach who oversaw the 1984 draft that netted Lemieux. “The elite player that Mario is, he makes everybody better. But you’ve got to have that other talented guy.”

Jagr, indisputably, was that other talented guy.

This summer is the 20th anniversary of the Penguins drafting Jagr. Next season will be the 10th since he left in a forgettable trade that unforgettably returned Kris Beech, Ross Lupaschuk and Michal Sivek. In between those two landmark dates, the Penguins made 11 consecutive playoffs and won the Stanley Cup twice.

“I think later on some things happened that were unfortunate, but I’m sure Mario still has a place in his heart for him,” said Paul Coffey, the Hall of Fame defenseman. “As good as Mario was and is, you still need a supporting cast. Gretzky had Messier and Kurri and the rest of us. You can’t win by yourself — and Jaromir was huge, a great hockey player.”

Talking Huet & Jagr

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

• The Chicago Blackhawks will have to take a long, hard look at their goaltending at the end of the season.

By sticking with the overpaid, underachieving Cristobal Huet at the deadline, GM Stan Bowman faces a big problem trying to fit all the pieces of his club under next season’s salary cap.

Not only do the Hawks have Huet under contract for two more years at an average of $5.625 million (all terms US), they will try to find a way to sign Antti Niemi, who has taken over as their No. 1 goaltender….

• All they have to do in Edmonton is hang the No. 68 sweater in Jaromir Jagr’s stall. The Oilers are fully expecting the 38-year-old to leave Omsk Avangard of the KHL this summer and sign as a UFA two seasons removed from the NHL. Edmonton scouts attended the Olympics to get a close look at Jagr. He would be welcomed back to the New York Rangers anytime, but Jagr has a close relationship with Oilers associate coach Tom Renney from their days on Broadway….

Two Devils Talk, One About Jagr

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils left wing Ilya Kovalchuk said he had not seen the comments from Kontinental Hockey League president Alexander Medvedev that SKA St. Petersburg will top any offer he will receive from an NHL team this summer.

“They’re just rumors,” Kovalchuk told me. “I’m trying to not think about it. This is my time in New Jersey and I have to focus on that because there’s it’s too much going on it my life in the last couple of weeks: the Olympics, the trade, my wife is pregnant. But now everything is settled down and I’m really focused on Jersey. We’ve got a great team and a great opportunity.”...

After playing with Jaromir Jagr on the Czech Republic’s Olympic team, Devils forward Patrik Elias believes Jagr wants to play in the NHL again.

“I think he’d love to,” Elias said. “He certainly showed and proved that he still has it and he can be an effective player, no question about it.”

Elias was understandably not happy with the Czech team losing, 2-0, to Finland in the quarterfinals.

Jagr Not What He Once Was

from Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com,

Contrary to the hype, Jaromir Jagr says he is no longer a superstar.

“No, I don’t feel like that,” Jagr said Friday afternoon when asked if he was still the go-to guy on the Czech Republic team. “The media back home might think that, but I don’t feel like that. It’s important how I feel.”

Jagr has been away from the National Hockey League for two years, departing the New York Rangers and taking his electrifying skill and megawatt personality to Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League. For the past 21 months, he has been plying his trade in Omsk, Russia, far from the prying eyes of North American hockey fans and media members.

Much has clearly changed during that period. Jagr turns 38 early next week and is now passed over when talk now rages about the best hockey players in the world. It is more than just out of sight, out of mind: Jagr himself doesn’t feel like he should be in that discussion.

Jagr Looking Forward To Playing On Small Ice

After almost two decades in the NHL and a couple of seasons in Russia, Jaromir Jagr is fast approaching his final appearance for the Czech Republic just over a month from now at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Jagr will be one of the most experienced members of the squad, led by the legendary player and Olympic champion Vladimir Ruzicka.

He was actually Jagr’s teammate when the Czech Republic won their only Olympic gold at the Nagano games in 1998.

While Jagr’s mind is now on the Continental Hockey League, the upcoming Winter Olympics promise to become something special for the Czech.

Would Jagr Rather Be A Member Of The New York Rangers?

from Stan Fischler of Game On,

Talk about going from a BIG SPLASH to a drop-in-the-bucket, how about our old buddy, Jaromir Jagr, formerly the toast of Broadway. A year ago Jags detonated roaring headlines by emigrating to Russia. Now there’s hardly a whisper about JJ. Let’s not forget that Jaromir – same as Sean Avery – could have remained a Ranger. There was a reasonable deal there for him to return, but he chose to chase pucks in Putinville. It says here that he regrets the move – deeply!

First Jagr In Edmonton, Now Renney

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Jagr, who accurately had been linked to the Oilers in mid-February, is all but certain to attempt to gain clearance from Omsk and the KHL to return to the NHL next season even though he had told friends throughout the year he is locked into Russia for 2009-10. If Tom Renney had remained behind the Ranger bench, it’s likely he would have sought to come back to New York.

That scenario is now inoperative. Indeed, if the Oilers miss the playoffs for a third straight year, it’s just possible Renney could replace Craig MacTavish as head coach and reunite with Jagr in Edmonton.

We had arranged to interview the KHL president and oil magnate through a league spokesman. We thought the timing was right given the Jaromir Jagr rumors, the Ray Emery situation, the world economic crisis, the nose-diving Russian ruble, falling oil prices and, well, the KHL’s survival.

An Edmonton Journal blog had the industry chirping Tuesday when it speculated the Oilers were taking another run at Jagr (they tried to sign him last July). The Oilers denied it. As we pointed out Tuesday, Jagr can’t leave his Russian contract with Omsk Avangard; and besides, if he did somehow sign with the Oilers, he’d have to clear NHL waivers first.

“Mr. Jagr played today for Avangard,” said Medvedev, who was in New York to take in the Capitals-Rangers game. “Legally, he has a contract. It would surprise me if it was really true that Edmonton tried to negotiate a deal with Mr. Jagr. I don’t like those rumors. But Edmonton publicly announced it wasn’t the case.”

Besides, continued Medvedev, Jagr is signed for “two years plus one [option].”

“And there is no-out clause [in the contract],” added Medvedev.

Report- Jagr Talking To Oilers

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,

A source close to Czech hockey ace Jaromir Jagr says that Jagr is close to finalizing negotiations with the Edmonton Oilers, reports Euro-hockey expert Peter Adler.

The source would not say when Jagr would report to Edmonton, how much he would be paid, or how long he would sign for. Jagr is now playing with Omsk in the financially-troubled Kontinental Hockey League.

continued and one question?, how about waivers?

update 2:23pm, From David Staples at The Cult of Hockey,

Oilers hockey ops boss Kevin Lowe is indicating that Czech hockey ace Jaromir Jagr, 37, isn’t coming to Edmonton—at least not this season, reports Euro-hockey expert Peter Adler.

“Jaromir is under contract in the KHL,” Lowe told Adler.

Jagr has also told Czech national team coach Vladimir Ruzicka he will be playing for the Czech team at the world championships in May.

Jagr Happy In Russia

from Lynn Zinser of the New York Times,

As Jaromir Jagr got ready for the latest unique experience in a season already full of them, he said he has no regrets about leaving the N.H.L. to play in Russia, despite watching a teammate die on the bench, having his coach quit in the middle of a game and playing in a league whose financial situation is said to be faltering.

“You could write a book about it,” Jagr said of his season during a telephone interview from Moscow. “But I’m fine. I’m doing good. I’m happy.”

On Friday, Jagr was getting ready to take center stage for the Continental Hockey League, or K.H.L., All-Star game on Saturday at an outdoor rink in Red Square. There, Jagr is the all-star of all stars, the biggest name in a league marketing itself around him.

added 5:33pm, from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

Jaromir Jagr said he has no designs on returning to the NHL in the short term, but if he ever did return he would be happy to go back to the Pittsburgh Penguins to play for his former idol, Mario Lemieux.

“I was thinking about it and if Mario would call me and say, ‘I’d like you to play for our team,’ I would think about it a lot,” Jagr said in a telephone interview from Moscow where the Kontinental League will hold its inaugural All-Star Game outdoors at Red Square Saturday. “I would play for the minimum salary. I would play for $350,000 just for him because I owe him my hockey life. I want to pay him back because he has made me what I am…besides my parents.”

Morning Line

“...I think Sean needs a strong coach like Mike Keenan. To have him under control. Then a lot of scandals could have been avoided.

Actually, people with a big self opinion will never understand Avery and will always think of him as an outsider. But I can never take Sean seriously. I have never had any problems with him.”

Evening Line

“You got such freedom, it’s hard to believe. In the U.S. you have so many rules, everything’s regulated and structured. When you make a mistake you pay for it — a lot. … In Russia you don’t have to worry if you make a mistake. And that’s what I love about living here. There’s always another way to make up for it. Nothing’s too serious. Nothing is a problem, and at the same time, everything’s a problem. But somehow no matter how bad things are, you can always work it out.”

Jagr Will Be Missed

from Arthur Staple of Newsday,

Did they get better, though? The lasting memory of Jagr’s four-year Rangers tenure was him putting the team on his back for the final month of the 2007-08 and their brief playoff run. When Glen Sather decided to let Jagr head off to the continent, he let go a guy who can be as dominant as anyone in the league.

Jagr’s abilities as a leader weren’t as strong, but his quirky sensibility and penchant for funny, self-deprecating comments served a purpose in a locker room that had very few loud corners. Sean Avery, the loudest of them all, is gone too, and Brendan Shanahan may not be back at this late date….

And when there’s adversity, as there always is during an NHL season, Jagr won’t be there to crack a joke or shoulder the blame and attention.

Difficult Decision For Jagr

from the CP,

An emotionally-drained Jaromir Jagr believes his decision to leave the NHL was the most difficult in his career. Yet the right one.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” the star winger told The Canadian Press in a phone interview Friday. “It was the toughest decision in my life, hockey-wise. ...

“It was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be,” he added. “No question about it. I hate making changes.”

Jagr With A Message

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The future is uncertain for Jagr, who said that he would like to play five more years. He has an offer from Russia. He may have a multi-year offer coming to him from Edmonton.

“People think that it’s better to have a lot of choices, but sometimes having one choice is best because you can’t make the wrong one,” Jagr said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do now, but I’ll make that choice when it’s time.

“I want to thank Glen and Tom and the Rangers. I want to thank all the people who supported me. Being in New York was special.

“And I also want to say to the people like Mike Milbury who made their living by criticizing me all the time, that they can kiss my [butt].”

added 7:44am, Last year, also on the 4th of July, we had this from then coach John Tortorella,

Coach John Tortorella wished Eric Perrin well but also said not to let the door hit him on the way out.
“He can kiss my (butt),’’ Tortorella said.

I wonder who will continue the tradition next year?

No More NYR Option for Jagr

From the CP via Sportsnet:

During a conference call, general manager Glen Sather said that the Naslund signing means that Jaromir Jagr will not be back with the Rangers next season.

Update 5:31pm ET: The link at Sportsnet.ca has changed the content we cited, noting that Jagr will be back now. Numerous other sources contradict this (agreeing with Sportsnet’s original wording) and so it seems likely that Sportsnet or the CP have just made an error.

Stop Thinking

from John Dellapina of the NY Daily News,

“I think they’re happy with what they got,” Jagr said of the Rangers. “The guys they got are what they feel they needed.”

Asked if he thought he could return to the Rangers, he replied: “That’s a tough question. To be honest, at times like this, I don’t think you should think. Because you might think something and get hurt. This is a business.

“First of all, I’ll tell you one thing, I’m not angry because I always believe that everything that happens happens for a reason. It’s possible. Everything is possible.

“But it doesn’t look to me like I was their first choice. And I don’t know if I was No.2 or No.3.”

Rangers Notes

Sam Weinman at Rangers Report:

Valiquette re-signed as well

A couple of other quick hits: Sather said he’s talked to Jaromir Jagr’s agent several times and they’re still interested in bringing him back.

Sather also mentioned he called Sean Avery’s agent Pat Morris and Morris never called him back.

Perhaps the end to the NYR spending day.  Glen Sather is currently on a media conference call and Weinman will probably be adding more to that post shortly.

We’ll note a confirmation of the Stephen Valiquette re-signing when available.

Update 10:01pm ET: TSN notes the Valiquette re-signing. No info on terms at that link yet.
