Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Forwards

As the new season approaches, I’ll be making an effort to preview the Southeast Division in a slow and steady, comprehensive manner. To kick things off, I thought I’d take a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. (In other words, for example, we’ll group Dustin Byfuglien’s 2009-10 statistics with Chicago alongside his new Atlanta Thrashers teammates and their performances from last year.)

In short, we’ll look at last year’s stats with this year’s rosters, both by division as a whole and by individual teams, broken down by position… Because a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come. (Often… Not always. See: Cheechoo, Jonathan.) And, besides, I don’t know that you’ll find a list like this in too many places (at least I hope you won’t… Cause that would mean I spent too much time on all of this!)

To get things started, we’ll start tonight with the forwards.

Rob Scuderi Check On Jason Chimera Tonight

Do Scuderi go too low to make the hit is my question?

No penalty on the play except for Derek Dorsett leavingt the bench and gettting a game misconduct along with Chimera who was yapping with the Kings bench.

added 10/26/09, 6:06am, from Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,

This wasn’t a hip check. Maybe it was intended to be, but it wasn’t even close. Scuderi essentially dived at Chimera’s knees, undercutting him and sending him airborn, skates over tin cup one might say.

Chimera’s face landed on the ice and he skidded that way a few feet before his neck crumpled and his body flopped the rest of the way over. It was a scary sight live, and even moreso in slow motion.

Chimera Feels Belanger Should Be Suspended

from Tom Reed of Puck-rakers,

Jason Chimera does not care that Eric Belanger’s rap sheet had been clean before Friday night’s hit from behind that sent the Blue Jackets winger off the ice on a stretcher.

He believes Belanger’s check was dirty and that it merits a suspension.

Chimera returned to Columbus on Saturday after he was held overnight in a St. Paul. Minn., hospital for observation. Belanger, a Wild center, rammed Chimera from behind—driving his face into the glass—as Chimera was trying to help teammates clear the puck from the defensive zone. Chimera’s face was driven into the ga

Chimera, who’s seen a replay, attached a graphic analogy to the hit and Belanger’s reputation as a clean player.

“It was a cheap hit, it was a dirty play,” Chimera said.

Chimera Incident Last Night

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,

Chimera’s situation is the most troubling, obviously. As of this writing—it’s about 12:15 a.m.—the only update was that Chimera was not flying back to Columbus with the Blue Jackets tonight. It’s unclear if he’s going to spend the rest of the night in the hospital, but that’s probably a safe assumption….

Modin was the first to arrive at Chimera’s side, hovering over him and speaking to him. Within moments of the hit, center Sammy Pahlsson began waving into the tunnel for paramedics to come onto the ice.

Here’s what Modin had to say. It’s pretty emotional.

“I didn’t see the hit,” Modin said. “I just saw Chimmer lying on his back, with blood coming out of his head. I wanted to talk to him, to let him know somebody was there with him … to let him know we were all there for him.

“It was very scary to see, because his eyes were rolling and his head was twitching, and it was pretty clear that something wasn’t right.”

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed left wing Jason Chimera to a four-year contract extension through the 2011-12 season, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.  As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
