Canes Activate Skinner

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has activated forward Jeff Skinner from injured reserve. Skinner, who has missed Carolina’s last 16 games with a concussion, is eligible to play in tonight’s game against the Capitals in Washington.
Skinner, 19, currently ranks second among Hurricanes skaters in goals (12) and third in points (24). Prior to suffering a concussion against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 7, the Markham, Ont., native had not missed a game in his NHL career. Carolina’s first-round draft pick (7th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Skinner has totaled 43 goals and 44 assists (87 points) in 112 career NHL games with the Hurricanes. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year after leading all rookies in points (63) during his first NHL season in 2010-11.

Jeff Skinner Closing-In On Return

The Hurricanes would like to get Skinner back for tonight’s game against Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m., FSCR), but his first game back is more likely to come after a few more contact practices, possibly Sunday on the road against the Washington Capitals
Skinner, sidelined more than a month with a concussion, has been given medical clearance for contact and was no longer wearing the yellow, no-contact jersey Wednesday at practice.
“Obviously it’s not up to me,” Skinner said Wednesday. “The doctors, the trainers, the coaching staff will make the decision for me, so I guess the pressure is off me in that way. I’m ready to get back on the bench.”
Skinner was the Hurricanes’ top scorer when he took a big hit from Andy Sutton of the Edmonton Oilers in a Dec. 7 road game. That was Kirk Muller’s fifth game as Canes coach, and Carolina is 5-6-3 - and often has struggled to score - since Skinner went out.

Skinner Diagnosed With A Concussion

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Jeff Skinner has been diagnosed with a concussion and is out indefinitely. Rutherford also updated the status of defenseman Joni Pitkanen, who has also been diagnosed with a concussion and is out indefinitely.

Skinner Not Feeling Well

Canes forward Jeff Skinner will miss tonight’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and his return won’t be determined until a medical evaluation in Raleigh.
Skinner, the Canes’ top scorer, missed the Winnipeg game Friday. He is out with an undisclosed injury and has spent the past few days with his family in nearby Markham.
Canes coach Kirk Muller said Sunday that Skinner—who absorbed a big hit from Edmonton’s Andy Sutton in Wednesday’s game—did not have any concussion issues. General manager Jim Rutherford was more cautionary today, saying Skinner is not feeling well and that the team would wait on the medical evaluation before making a decision on his playing status.
“He’s a big part of this team and we’re going to miss him and his skill level,” Muller said after today’s morning skate. “We’ll evaluate him when we get back to Raleigh.”

Skinner missed Friday’s game due to flu-like symptoms and has returned to Carolina for further evaluation while the Canes are in Toronto for their next game on Tuesday.
Maybe this has something to do with his illness: Last Wednesday, late against Edmonton…

Future Looks Bright For Jeff Skinner

“My parents were huge in my life ... my biggest fans,” he said. “They’ve done so much for me ... sacrificed everything. The biggest adjustment for me in the NHL was living away from home. My roommate, Justin Peters, was a big help and showed me the ropes. ”
Skinner isn’t resting on his laurels. He spent this summer working out two hours a day, six times a week, plus on-ice skills development two or three times a week and yoga while preparing for next season.
And Maurice is looking forward to his return.
“It is special to come into the NHL and score 30-plus goals,” Maurice said. “It usually takes three, four or even five years to develop. Everyone down here has fallen in love with him. He is grounded and he looks like he’s having fun.”

Jeff Skinner’s Options In Vegas Are Limited

Jeff Skinner might not even be able to make it past the Palms Casino Resort food court tomorrow night, so there’s no telling how he will get into the Pearl Theatre where the NHL Awards are taking place.
Since Skinner—the NHL’s youngest player, who led all rookies in scoring with 63 points—isn’t 21, he can’t gamble or drink—but technically he can’t even walk through the casino floor.
“I’m just trying to take it all in. I wish I could just watch everything in slow motion because there is so much to see,” said the 19-year-old Skinner, who is making his first trip to Las Vegas because he was nominated for the Calder Trophy, given each year to the league’s outstanding rookie.

Trophy Talk: Southeast-Style

We’ve said it several times this season – that the Southleast is no more. With 308 combined points in the standings, Tampa Bay, Washington, Carolina, Atlanta and Florida comprise the Eastern Conference’s top division by that standard. Only the Pacific Division (321 points) has had more success as a group this season in the entire league. There’s even a fighting chance that four Southeast Division clubs could make the playoffs.
Suffice it to say, anyone still knocking the hockey played down here in this corner of the continent can be officially discredited. Clearly, anyone in that category hasn’t been paying attention this season.
Beyond team accolades, when the book is closed on the 2010-11 season, the Southeast Division has a legitimate chance for representation in almost every major year-end individual award. Some have sturdier ground to stand on than others in that respect but several individuals from Southeast clubs look to at least be in the conversation for some hardware in Vegas in late June.
Since premature awards speculation has started to heat up at a few other media outlets – always fun to keep tabs on ESPN’s Trophy Tracker but no Tampa Bay love in the Adams race, really? – here’s a list of potential trophy candidates from the Southeast Division, in no particular order.

Introducing This & That. a feature set aside for those days when my brain is incapable of any smooth transition from one thought to another. Instead, a random spattering of things I’m thinking, items I meant to include elsewhere but may have forgotten and miscellaneous ramblings that may otherwise have no defined category or forum for inclusion.
(Plus, this way, I never have to use the term “hodgepodge” again.)
Off we go:
—-“If Smitty gets claimed, it’s good for him. If he doesn’t, he goes down and plays for us down there. We want to get him playing.” – Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, on recently waived netminder Mike Smith.
To the first point, absolutely. As far back as late last season, I was wondering whether or not Smith might be better off with a fresh start. Amid flashes of brilliance, Smith has struggled consistently throughout his tenure in Tampa and had all kinds of promise stifled by injuries. This year, despite unsightly statistics, some in scouting circles have seen reason for optimism in his game, giving new life to the idea that he might somehow flourish in a new situation.

Past the Quarter Poll: Southeast Division Team Ratings from JJ

We’re past the quarter pole, so maybe this is a bit late but it still seems like a good time to me to hand out some assessments to all five Southeast Division clubs. Besides, what’s this quarter pole anyway? Divide the NHL season in equal fours and the resting #StamkosMath calculator tells me that we’d have to stop things at the ten-minute mark of each team’s 21st game of the year to truly be one quarter of the way through. And that just seems troubling.
We’ll go with JJ Ratings rather than the standard report cards because one, everyone else seems to do the report card thing and two, handing out school-type grades gives me terrible nightmares. (Trust me.) Instead, each club’s JJ Rating will reflect their performance on a scale of one to ten (and, since I’ve become a big fan of complicating things, we’ll allow for partial points as well).
Here we are, anywhere from 26-29 games into the 2010-11 slate for the Southeast squads – as good a time as any (maybe just because I say so) to see where we are versus where we thought we’d be, as well as where we might be headed.
We’ll tackle this alphabetically (Ooh… Suspense!)

Skinner Leading The Rookie Points Race

Jeff Skinner awoke Wednesday morning to find himself standing alone atop the NHL’s list of leading rookie scorers, with 15 points in his first 15 NHL games.
The youngest player in the league was even tied for 14th in scoring in the entire league, sharing that position with established stars like Pavel Datsyuk, Joe Thornton, Henrik Zetterberg, Patrick Kane, Martin St. Louis and Dany Heatley. Oh, and Carolina Hurricanes teammate Eric Staal.
Still, the stats don’t really capture exactly what has made the 18-year-old such an instant success with the Hurricanes.
“When it’s time to shine, he’s not afraid to try things, and he’s not afraid to fail,” Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu said. “He sees it as an opportunity. That’s how I see him. You can see it in his body language. He enjoys playing hockey. I like it. It’s fun to watch that kind of player.”

JJ’s Three Cheers: 11/01/10 - Plus Thoughts on Tampa’s Continued Hot Start and Stamkos Contract Talk

Perhaps you enjoyed a day of rest from NHL hockey yesterday. Or, more likely, you were angered, annoyed or even lost at some point last night, with not a shot on goal to be had anywhere. (Or maybe, even, you were like me: Incensed at an awful showing in your weekly football picks – and I mean awful – and left without the catharsis of switching to a different sport at day’s end, left only to the comfort of Dexter and his serial-killing ways… Whatever the case may be, we (or I, that is) have some catching up to do with JJ’s Three Cheers overdue from Friday and Saturday.
Now then, quickly, from Friday first:
***Cheers to Atlanta’s Dustin Byfuglien, whose transition back to defense has gone quite well in his new home. On Friday night, Byfuglien netted the O.T. winner in fantastic fashion for Atlanta, on an end-to-end rush reminiscent of legendary offensive defensemen of years gone by, to top Buffalo 4-3. (I’ll link it twice, actually, because you need to make sure you’ve seen this play.)

Around the Southeast this Weekend

A quick look at what’s happening (and what’s happened) with all five Southeast Division clubs as we head into the weekend:
We’ll go top to bottom:
Tampa Bay
1st place, 6-2-1 (13 points)
By and large, folks have been impressed with the Bolts thus far. As I wrote on Wednesday night, all six of their wins have differed significantly from one another and, though it is extremely early, that is a distinctive mark of a good team.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/21/10

Today’s three cheers for last night’s top performers in NHL action:
***Cheers to Chicago’s Marty Turco, who made 36 saves and held the fort for the ‘Hawks in the shootout for a 2-1 decision over the Vancouver Canucks. Turco only had to make one save in the breakaway tiebreaker, on Mikael Samuelsson, but Roberto Luongo stopped none at the other end and the Blackhawks earned the extra point in turn. Luongo was good during the actual game, making 31 saves of his own and earning third star honors, but what’s going on with his early season numbers? A 3.38 goals-against and an .888 save percentage isn’t exactly the Bobby Lu Canucks fans expect, nor is the 2-3-2 mark for their club. Surely, it’s only a matter of time before he (and the team) turns it around. (Right?)

***Cheers to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, for stepping up to Anaheim’s Corey Perry and earning the decisive victory in a scrap last night. He may have taken himself out of the running for the Lady Byng Trophy in this season’s very first game but taking out a bullying Perry, in this instance, was well worth it.

Two-Goal Start for Sutter, Productive Youth (and No Injuries!) All Good Signs for Carolina

He’s not the youngest player on the roster, nor would he be considered a shocking contributor after last season’s 21-goal, 40-point showing but Brandon Sutter is most certainly a key piece to any Carolina Hurricanes success this year and his two-goal performance in Thursday’s season-opening, 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild in Helsinki, Finland is an excellent early sign for a club hoping for a lot to go their way in 2010-11.
For the Hurricanes, banking on both young guns and sustained health and rejuvenation for several veterans who were hobbled last year, a player like Sutter, at 21, serving as an alternate captain and coming off of a breakthrough season a year ago, will play a major role in determining their fortune. So far, so good for Sutter, who played just six seconds less yesterday than Carolina captain Eric Staal and so far, so good for the ‘Canes, who dressed six players 25-and-under in the game and got production from Sutter (two goals), Zac Dalpe (assist) and Jamie McBain (assist), as well as sparkling reviews for 18-year-old forward Jeff Skinner from that group.

It’s Here! Go Time for the NHL’s 2010-11 Season

So, it might be taking place a half a world away…
And, sure, those of us burdened by the demands of troublesome day jobs might not get to take in all of today’s matinee action…
But, finally, hockey’s back in a little less than one hour.
The Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild kick off the NHL season from Helsinki, Finland at noon in the East today and four other games are scheduled this evening meaning that, once again, all is right with the world.

Carolina’s Push Toward Youth is Both Promising and Perilous

The future is now in Carolina, where the old guard is out, an influx of youth is taking over and everyone is looking to put the injury-plagued woes that ruined things a season ago far, far behind them.
With the retirement of former captain Rod Brind’Amour symbolizing the changing of the guard in Raleigh, which started with Eric Staal succeeding Brind’Amour as team captain in January last season, the process of remolding the club is well underway. The 25-year-old Staal will have some veteran support in his first full year wearing the ‘C’ but Carolina’s heavy reliance on several key youngsters is a make-or-break formula for success this season. If the kids collectively respond to the challenge, the ‘Canes have enough going for them to cause trouble in the Southeast and surprise a lot of people. Some growing pains are sure to be felt, however, in such a transitional year for the franchise and immediate success probably takes a back seat to more long-term achievements.
Avoiding the injury bug has to be high on the list of priorities for a club that holds the unfortunate distinction of hitting the 300 man-games lost to injury milestone a year ago.
