Roenick Talks Current Affairs In The NHL

from TSN,
When asked to share his opinion on Stars forward James Neal’s hit on Blue Jackets winger Derek Dorsett, which cost Neal two-games via disciplinary action from the NHL, Roenick didn’t pull any punches in labeling the Stars’ leading goal scorer.
‘’If Neal would have done this 20 years ago, he would have been blackballed from the league,’’ said Roenick. ‘’If you’re going to get challenged, then drop your gloves and go to it - fight, but don’t come back later on and then give a cheap shot to a guy who has already challenged you.
‘’To me, that’s kind of gutless and I’m sure a lot of guys in the league think that’s gutless also.’’

“It’s been a mess for years and years and years. I don’t think people we’ve had in there before Paul Kelly were helping it at all. There are a lot of untrustworthy people who have done some untrustworthy things.
“I’ve seen a lot of mishandling of money, mishandling of arbitration cases, mishandling of hiring help for the PA that has been a waste of the PA’s money. They need to do something right now to get some legitimacy back into the organization and bring some strength to the players and bring some honesty and trustworthiness between the players and the people who are heading the PA. Before we get that, we’re going to struggle with our membership.”

Roenick Talks Chicago
by Paul on 08/16/09 at 09:40 AM ET

from Bob Verdi of the Chicago Tribune,
Jeremy Roenick has numerous options for what to do with the rest of his life, including stage, screen and television. But he will clear a busy schedule for one particular job title, should it be offered.
“I began my career with the Blackhawks and should have ended it with the Blackhawks,” he was saying the other day from his home near Phoenix. “And there should have been no in between the Blackhawks. I should never have left. I didn’t want to leave. I loved Chicago and felt loved in Chicago.
“Anyway, I’ve seen what they’ve done for some retired guys like me. Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, Denis Savard. They’re ambassadors for the club. I could go for that. As long as we’re at it, it would be cool if they retired my number, 27, too. I would be honored.”
Heck J.R. why not ask for the assistant GM job too?

Does Roenick Belong In The HHOF?
by Paul on 08/09/09 at 07:32 AM ET

via Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• What does it say about Nikolai Zherdev, when he’s only 24 years old, is one goal shy of 100 in the National Hockey League, is a free agent, and only teams with 10-foot poles want to touch him?
• Yes, Jeremy Roenick could talk and make you laugh, but the guy could play, too. A bunch. He’s borderline Hall of Fame and may be able to talk his way in.
• The math on Jerry Reinsdorf’s apparent offer for the Coyotes is somewhat startling. It goes something like this: He wants $23 million US, or thereabouts, in lease concessions from the City of Glendale, wants to deal Wayne Gretzky out of the game by not paying him his $8 million a year, and get some $15 million in revenue sharing annually from the NHL. In other words, he figures that, with $43 million in handouts, he has a chance to break even.

Not Many Like Roenick
by Paul on 08/05/09 at 02:02 PM ET

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News,
Sure, Roenick polarizes people in hockey circles to a degree few other NHLers have in the league’s history. Even the THN offices has its share of J.R.-loathers; when we caught wind of his looming announcement last week, there weren’t many tears being shed for a player whose best on-ice years ended when his stint as a Philadelphia Flyer did in 2004.
But focusing on the guy’s theatrics and dismissing his contributions because you believe all hockey players ought to be brainless drones with zippers for mouth-holes is a convenient way to overlook the stunning array of on-ice achievements that should make Roenick a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame one day.
In his heyday with the Chicago Blackhawks, Roenick put up two 50-goal seasons and three 100-plus point campaigns. He played in nine all-star games, two Olympic tournaments, one Canada Cup and one World Cup. He retires as the league’s third-best American-born amasser of both goals (513) and points (1,216) and is the NHL’s 39th-best point-producer of all time.

from Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic,
Jeremy Roenick has his happy ending. The Coyotes are still working on theirs.
Roenick will leave the game with his dignity, his milestone and his name in lights. And though he hasn’t announced his retirement just yet, it sounds as though the hard-checking star finally is checking out.
“I’m really not on the fence,” Roenick said. “I really know what I’m doing. I’m just not going to announce it yet.”
For 20 seasons, Roenick gave the NHL what it sorely needs: a marketable American with huge personality. He was flashy, on ice and off. He said lots of interesting things. He will leave as one of the better American-born players of all time.

“He can’t pick his spots. For him to be known as one of the greatest players in the world from now on, he’s got to bring that. He makes a lot of money to bring that intensity. You can’t rely on just his eyes and his know-how all the time.”

The San Jose Sharks are being bitten by the injury bug – again.
Forward Mike Grier is out for four-to-six weeks after getting his knee scoped and veteran Jeremy Roenick is also expected to be out for four-to-six weeks with a shoulder injury.
Both, however, are expected to return to the Sharks lineup prior to the playoffs.

How To Give An Interview By J.R.
by Paul on 01/15/09 at 09:47 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
“There are two ways players can be better interviews,” Roenick said. “No. 1: speak your mind. If you feel passionately about something, then grow a pair, grow a thick skin, and say so. Don’t be afraid that you’re going to say the wrong thing. If it comes from your heart, if you know that you’re right, step up and let people hear what you have to say.
“And No. 2: for christ’s sake – for christ’s sake – show some (expletive) enthusiasm during interviews,” Roenick said. “I see too many interviews where young guys say the same thing night after night after night. It’s (expletive).
“You know what, guys? Don’t just give us the usual clichés. Don’t do interviews where your eyes are just staring off into space when they should be looking into the camera. Say something funny once in a while! And if somebody scores a sick goal, it’s OK to say ‘damn, my teammate scored a sick goal!’ ”

Roenick Having Shoulder Surgey
by Paul on 12/14/08 at 04:42 PM ET
Comments (3)
from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
Two injury updates from the morning skate:
Joe Pavelski could be in the lineup against L.A. on Monday night, but just in case he isn’t, the Sharks plan to call up another forward from Worcester. Nothing official yet, but Jamie McGinn would be a pretty good guess.
And Jeremy Roenick will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder tomorrow. That decision means he’s definitely going to be out of action longer than the three-week forecast given yesterday, but just how much longer won’t be known until the procedure is completed and the training staff knows what it’s up against.
continue for more on the Sharks
I wonder if the Sharks would attempt to bring up Claude Lemieux who would have to clear waivers first?

Roenick: T-Shirt Maven

from Cecile Nguyen at SanJoseSharks.com,
Roenick helped start Muze Clothing in 2004 with a few friends while golfing and plays a large role in the t-shirt clothing company.
“I’m a big part of Muze,” Roenick said. “I’m part owner, part designer and part ‘okayer.’ I’m pretty much a little of everything. I have a big say in what happens and am the name and the face of the company.”
According to Muze’s official website, the t-shirt company “spans generations and demographics and unites people on the basis of love for film, a sense of humor, a creative use of a popular line.”
The concept behind Muze clothing is to combine classic movie quotes with fashion. Muze features popular quotes from Pulp Fiction, Caddyshack and Goodfellas to name a few.

So how does a full-time NHLer plan on being a future full-time actor?
“I’m good friends with producer-director Paul Bernard and he wants to turn me into an actor when I’m done with hockey,” Roenick said. “He and his brother Tom are big producers in Los Angeles.”

CBA No Loss For Players

From Joe Starkey at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
“If people are going to chastise professional athletes who are making a lot of money, they need to look at the deal we are probably going to end up signing,” [Jeremy] Roenick said.
As if the players would be forced to subsist on food stamps and ramen noodles.
Now look: Thomas Vanek makes $10 million, and the average salary has officially cracked $1.9 million, passing the pre-lockout figure of $1.83 million.
A crushing loss for the players?

What a Difference a Year Makes

From James Duthie at The Good, The Bad and The Duthie:
Exactly one year ago, Jeremy Roenick strolled into our studio for the start of the second round of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Not surprisingly, it was a Rock Star entrance. He was late (plane’s fault), arriving just as our first intermission was beginning. He had not rehearsed, not been given a single tip on which camera to look at, how long to talk for, or how to deal with a producer yapping in his ear.
Of course, none of that mattered. The only thing Roenick does better than play hockey is…talk. He was more comfortable in the first 30 seconds on television than some are after 10 years in the business. He said smart things, dumb things, outrageous things. He waved his arms madly in the air like he was in the middle of a dance floor whenever we first came live to studio.

Clean Living Pays Off

From Greg Beacham at the AP (via USA Today):
When Roenick postponed retirement for another Stanley Cup run, he also gave up alcohol for the year. Roenick doesn’t have a drinking problem, yet the 38-year-old forward partly credits his teetotaling for his remarkable resurgence this season, capped by a spectacular Game 7 that sent the Sharks onward to face the Dallas Stars in the second round.
“I think that has a lot to do with it - clean living and making sure that my body is fresh, that there’s no toxins in it,” said Roenick, who had two goals and two assists. “A healthy mind will create a healthy body, and the San Jose Sharks have allowed me to have a healthy mind. I haven’t felt this good in maybe 10 or 15 years, since I was a kid. I feel like I did when I played in Chicago, before Philly and Phoenix, way back when.”

from the AP via Sports Illustrated,
“I’m biting my tongue here,’’ Keenan said after Game 2.
That didn’t sit well with Sharks coach Ron Wilson, who has long argued against a more relaxed standard of officiating in the postseason.
“The playoffs are an extension of the regular season, and we play by the same rules,’’ Wilson said Friday. “There’s not a red rulebook for the playoffs and a white one for the regular season.’’
All in all, it’s been a virtuoso performance by two of the NHL’s top bench bosses and media agitators. Both are experts with pungent sound bites and jabbing comments to their players as well.
“They both have their thick books of things they say,’’ Roenick said. “At times, I’d like to put earplugs in my ears on the bench, but they both do it because they’re passionate about the game.’’

Iron Mike Head Games

From Eric Francis at the Calgary Sun, Jeremy Roenick tells a story about Mike Keenan:
“In the 1992 Stanley Cup, I got slashed by Kevin Stevens, and Mike threw a cast on my hand and put me in front of the media to get a point across to the league and the officials that I was getting cheap-shotted,” chuckled Roenick during a conference call yesterday setting up his Sharks’ series with Keenan’s Calgary Flames.
“He made me a guinea pig—it was kind of embarrassing—but what Mike says, you do. Mike is a genius when it comes to head games and getting into the referees’ or players’ heads. He’s crazy—very slippery, very sly. He can manipulate a lot of people with what comes out of his mouth. That’s just a talent.”

, There is really no in-between with Jeremy Roenick, nor has there been his entire career. You either love him or hate him.
But even those leading the anti-J.R. brigade have to admit that the San Jose Sharks are looking like geniuses for rolling the dice with the old man.
Getting Roenick to check his oft-inflated ego at the door may have been the largest coup of all for Doug Wilson and Co., and may pay even larger dividends once the post-season begins next week.

Nine months later Roenick is thankful that he went to see his former Blackhawks teammate (Doug) Wilson and grateful to Wilson for giving me “a chance to hold my head high again.”
Roenick said he was “blown away” by the respect that Wilson showed him that day.
“He told me that he didn’t want me to retire the way that it was going,” Roenick said, still touched by that meeting. “That meant the world to me because respect is huge to me.”

Sharks Making Their Mark

From the AP via the Santa Barbara News-Press,
After the longest winning streak in franchise history, Roenick’s only remaining question is whether the Sharks can ride this wave all the way into June.
San Jose’s club-record 11-game roll ended Sunday night, but the 2-1 shootout loss to Edmonton still produced the Sharks’ 23rd point in 12 games. Led by a rejuvenated captain, a new defenseman and a tireless goalie, San Jose has replied to the doubters who saw the preseason Stanley Cup favorites’ first 60 games as a disappointment - particularly the five before their winning run.
‘’We had that five-game losing streak, and when you’re in a playoff race and you get scared of actually missing the playoffs, it gets your attention,’’ said Roenick, recalling a miserable trip from New Jersey to Philadelphia right before the streak began.

Roenick raised his hands and yelled as soon as the referee signalled the goal. He was immediately mobbed by his teammates.
The game was delayed a few minutes as Roenick skated in front of the Sharks’ bench with the puck raised above his head. He pointed into the stands as the crowd gave him an extended standing ovation. Even a few of the Coyotes joined in tapping their sticks.
Roenick became the third American-born player to reach 500 goals. The nine-time all-star ranks 40th in goals and 44th in points on the NHL career lists.

USA Hockey Milestones in Reach Tonight
by Alanah McGinley on 10/29/07 at 02:10 PM ET

From Mike Heika at The Dallas Morning News,
Tonight could be a memorable night for USA Hockey.
Stars center Mike Modano sits two points shy of tying Phil Housley for the most points by an American-born player. San Jose forward Jeremy Roenick is two goals shy of becoming only the third American-born player to record 500 goals in his career. Roenick said he’d like to see both milestones attained on the same night.
“It would be nice, because Mike would be in the building,” said Roenick, who contemplated retirement in the off-season. “He’s one of the guys who told me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to stick around,’ which meant the world to me.”

Roenick Wave Irks Keenan
by Paul on 10/23/07 at 06:48 AM ET

from the Calgary Sun,
Keenan thought a linesman’s whistle while the game was still scoreless in the first period could just as easily have been the difference.
Robyn Regehr had just smashed Jeremy Roenick into the boards and left him frozen and dazed but still standing, as Jarome Iginla was sprung on a breakaway the other way. But the man in stripes adamantly blew his whistle.
“That could have been a turning point more than the shorthanded goal,” said Keenan, who was even more flustered Roenick waved to fans on his way to the bench. “I didn’t appreciate that he gestured to the crowd when he was supposed to be the injured player.”

Roenick Surprises
by Alanah McGinley on 10/21/07 at 01:59 PM ET

From David Pollack at the Mercury News,
The Sharks surprised the hockey world in September when they signed veteran forward Jeremy Roenick as a free agent. After all, the guy is 37 and had all but announced his retirement after a couple of subpar seasons in Los Angeles and Phoenix.
Lately, Roenick has been the one doing the surprising. Brought in as a strong locker room presence, Roenick has been getting it done on the ice as well. Saturday night, his second-period power play goal held up as the winner as San Jose defeated Nashville 3-0 for the Sharks’ first home victory in three tries.
There’s an audio slideshow of the game available as well, with some commentary by the players. A nice feature by the Mercury News.

Roenick Looking for a Cup
by Alanah McGinley on 10/15/07 at 06:43 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Jim Morris at the CP,
Roenick is on course to become the 40th NHL player, and just the third born in the U.S., to score 500 goals.
“That would be great,” said Roenick, who signed as a free agent with the Sharks this summer after a couple of frustrating seasons in Phoenix and Los Angeles. “That would be a true treat but that’s not my goal right now. That will be something I can look back at when I’m done and really feel good about myself. No. 1 would be the Stanley Cup.”
Roenick, a 37-year-old native of Boston, headed into the game against Vancouver with 497 career goals. The two goals he scored this year both came in a 3-1 win over the Canucks on Oct. 5.
*I’m guessing he gets his 500th against Vancouver—it seems like everyone scores their milestone goals against the Canucks.
So it’s either a hat trick tonight, or Sharks fans better not expect him to score his 500th till December 13th…

Roenick Ready To Lead The Cheers

from the AP via the Red Bluff Daily News,
“Just knowing these guys and watching them skate every day, I don’t see how we can’t be the odds-on favorite,” Roenick said Tuesday. “But with that comes a lot of responsibility, a lot of pressure. We have to make sure that we don’t sit on those accolades. We have to go out there and make sure they come true.”
After making few changes to a roster that posted a franchise-record 107 points last spring, the Sharks are so loaded with largely homegrown talent that Roenick—the 495-goal scorer who signed on 10 days before training camp—probably will be a healthy scratch when San Jose opens its season in Edmonton on Thursday night.
“I can be a cheerleader, and this is a great team to cheer for,” Roenick said.
