Reinsdorf Back In The Phoenix Picture

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

There was a series of meetings this past Tuesday in Phoenix regarding the future of the Coyotes’ ownership, with both NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly on hand.

While nobody connected with the NHL would talk about it Saturday, one source connected to the situation told ESPN.com the Ice Edge group, which had signed a letter of intent earlier this season to buy the Coyotes, was no longer the front-runner to purchase the team. The source said Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf was back in the picture. Still, Ice Edge remains in the mix and hopes to try to complete the purchase.

If there is no local owner lined up by May, relocation could possibly enter the picture. The city of Glendale is working hard right now to try to avoid that.

Reinsdorf Done With Phoenix

from Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune,

White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf’s group pulled out of its bid to buy the NHL Phoenix Coyotes.

The following is a statement issued by his group:

Glendale Sports and Entertainment, whose principals are John Kaites, Jerry Reinsdorf and Tony Tavares, regrets to inform all interested parties that despite expending a great deal of time, money, and effort, it is unable to comply with the court mandated deadline of August 25, 2009, for having a firm offer to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes and keep them in Glendale.

Leak Of Confidential Information Upsets Reinsdorf

from Rebekah L. Sanders of the Arizona Republic,

One of the most high-profile bidders for the Phoenix Coyotes is threatening to yank his offer from U.S. Bankruptcy Court over an extraordinary leak of confidential information.

The leak on Friday outraged Chicago sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf, who along with other investors has offered $148 million for the team, and sent officials with Glendale and the NHL scrambling over the weekend to repair relations with one of the few potential buyers wanting to keep the Coyotes in the Valley.

The confidential information was posted publicly through the court’s Web site by attorneys for Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes.

The document described proposals Reinsdorf has made during negotiations with Glendale on how to raise millions in yearly team revenue. The team has lost as much as $30 million each season.

Coyotes Owner Speaks-Out On Reinsdorf Bid

from Rebekah L. Sanders of the Arizona Republic,

Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes is blasting the latest bid for his bankrupt team as illegitimate.

Chicago sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf and Valley attorney John Kaites together recently offered $148 million to keep the NHL team playing in Glendale.

Moyes says it appears to be a no-cash bid that would assume $118.5 million in secured debt but would fail to pay creditors….

Moyes points out that the new Reinsdorf bid requires renegotiation of contracts with Glendale and the other vendors, an arm-twisting approach Moyes was unable to accomplish before turning to bankruptcy.

“The current structure of our agreements with Glendale and other parties is a money loser no matter how well the team plays,” Moyes said in a statement. “Simply put, the Reinsdorf bid wants to only assume the team’s debt and then restructure all agreements, which is what I have been trying to do for the last year.”

It’s Doubtful Reinsdorf Would Take Over Coyotes

from Dan McGrath of the Chicago Tribune,

Both the city of Glendale, Ariz., and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman have approached Bulls and White Sox chairman and part-time Phoenix-area resident Reinsdorf about taking over the troubled hockey franchise, and a business associate acknowledged Reinsdorf has explored the possibilities.

But the associate believes Reinsdorf likely will pass. The Coyotes have myriad obstacles standing between them and profitability, beginning with a bad lease deal and competition with rival American Airlines Arena for non-hockey events that could help make their building more profitable.
