San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group III unrestricted free agent left wing Jody Shelley to a two-year contract.  In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Why Fight

from Media News at Inside Bay Area,

Jody Shelley often has a hard time explaining what exactly he does for a hockey team. Talking to kids especially can leave him tongue-tied.

“When I visit elementary schools, that’s always the first question — ‘Why do you fight?’” Shelley said. “I’m always like, ‘Well, uh, you shouldn’t fight. Fighting is bad. And don’t you do it. But I fight to help my teammates.’”

Pause.

“You know, it’s not an easy question to answer.”

Evening Line

from Working the Corners at the Mercury News,

...while Ron Wilson wanted to get a look at Shelley in practice before saying when he thought he’d be playing, the coach did sound as if he likes the idea of the added toughness in the lineup.

“When teams try to push us around and rough us up, we’ve got some artillery — a nuclear weapon,” Wilson said. “The guy will step out there and we’ve heard nothing but good about Jody being a team player. We’ve seen the damage he can do in the past.”

Sharks Get Shelley From Columbus

via the Columbus Blue Jackets,

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired a sixth round pick in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for left wing Jody Shelley, club General Manager Scott Howson announced tonight.

added 10:07pm, via the San Jose Sharks,

“Jody Shelley is an aggressive, physical player who adds a distinct element of toughness to our team,” said (Doug) Wilson.  “With the loss of players like Ryane Clowe and Brad Norton due to injury, this is something we have been trying to address and we like the capabilities that Jody brings to our mix of players.  He has tremendous character, has always been a team player and has the ability to make the opposition uncomfortable on the ice.”

Opposites Attract

from the Columbus Dispatch,

She has never been in a physical confrontation, she says, unless you count the time irony smacked her between the eyes. That was the day, five years ago, when she met her future husband, Blue Jackets enforcer Jody Shelley.

“My friends from back home couldn’t believe we were dating,” Mandy said. “They reminded me I was the student who always ran to the nearest teacher when I saw a fight.”

Jody Shelley Proud Of Columbus Success

from the Columbus Dispatch,

“Driving in some days, you feel like you’re going to go out on the ice and run through the boards,” Shelley said Sunday night as he watched the Jackets play the St. Louis Blues. He was sitting alone in a darkened booth on press row, just below the rafters.

Shelley is—or was—primarily an enforcer. But there are fewer fights in the NHL. There is also a greater importance on special teams, so agitation is a more delicate art. In the Jackets’ case, they have this kid Jared Boll who knows how to irritate, and skate, and hit.
