Caps are Still the Caps, Which is Bad News for Everyone Else

Of all five Southeast Division clubs, the Washington Capitals of 2010-11 will look the most like themselves from a year ago, having added only a spattering of depth to the lineup that captured the President’s Trophy last season. Alas, as the reigning division champ and still the clear-cut class of the division, if it ain’t broke, well, you know… But a first-round playoff exit thanks to Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens left an awful taste in the mouths of Bruce Boudreau’s squad, meaning improvements are in order this year for sure. (Or else?)

Carolina’s Push Toward Youth is Both Promising and Perilous
by Jon Jordan on 09/17/10 at 02:12 PM ET

The future is now in Carolina, where the old guard is out, an influx of youth is taking over and everyone is looking to put the injury-plagued woes that ruined things a season ago far, far behind them.
With the retirement of former captain Rod Brind’Amour symbolizing the changing of the guard in Raleigh, which started with Eric Staal succeeding Brind’Amour as team captain in January last season, the process of remolding the club is well underway. The 25-year-old Staal will have some veteran support in his first full year wearing the ‘C’ but Carolina’s heavy reliance on several key youngsters is a make-or-break formula for success this season. If the kids collectively respond to the challenge, the ‘Canes have enough going for them to cause trouble in the Southeast and surprise a lot of people. Some growing pains are sure to be felt, however, in such a transitional year for the franchise and immediate success probably takes a back seat to more long-term achievements.
Avoiding the injury bug has to be high on the list of priorities for a club that holds the unfortunate distinction of hitting the 300 man-games lost to injury milestone a year ago.

Southeast Division Statistical Previews by Position: Offense from the Defense
by Jon Jordan on 08/22/10 at 08:12 PM ET

In my second statistical peek at the Southeast Division, I’ve grouped defensemen with their new clubs and will focus, this time, on offensive production from the blueline.
(Next up, we’ll re-visit the d-men from a different angle, including blocked shots, TOI and other specifics with less of an offensive emphasis.)
Remember, just as I did with the forwards, this is simply a look back at last year’s individual player statistics, updated to reflect this summer’s off-season transactions. And, as I said in that first piece, a look to the recent past can often be a good indicator of what’s to come… But not always!!!
It should also be noted, especially since I didn’t mention it with the forwards package, that rookies and European transfers (many of whom could certainly make a major impact, theoretically) are not part of this forecast.
Recall as well that for this analysis, currently unsigned, unrestricted free agents are not included, while those still unsigned but restricted are (save for Tampa’s Paul Ranger, an RFA that I have excluded intentionally, as I have little reason to believe he will return).

RALEIGH, NC— Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team will place defenseman Joe Corvo on injured reserve with a leg injury suffered Monday night in Raleigh against the Washington Capitals. In addition, the team has reassigned forward Patrick Dwyer to Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Corvo suffered a laceration of his lower right leg from the skate of Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner during a collision in the first period of the game, and was transported to Rex Hospital. There, Dr. Marty Isbell of Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic performed surgery to repair the injuries suffered. Corvo is expected to miss 8-12 weeks of action.
