Well, to be honest, I see it as a good problem to have. He has made it difficult for us to consider a trade, because he has played so well. I’m glad he has, because he’s a competitor and he’s got a lot of pride. It’s terrific not only for him, but for us that he’s played this way. That makes the decision tough for us, but we’ll hopefully make the right one when it comes time.

“I talked to him and I told him that I believe it’s still his net right now. We had four unrestricted free agent goalies heading into the summer, and we needed to get some kind of plan for our future, so this is just one part of the process.”
“Marty (Turco) has played very well these past four games, and I imagine he will continue to play. He’s a professional, and I know that’s how he will respond.”

From TSN:
A shake up is coming in the Dallas Stars’ front office.
Sources tell TSN Joe Nieuwendyk will be named as the Stars’ general manager tomorrow afternoon.
The existing Dallas management tandem of Les Jackson and Brett Hull is expected to be reassigned, with Hull becoming a liaison to Stars owner Tom Hicks in addition to being named an executive vice president and alternate governor.
Update 4:11pm ET: Official release (via the Dallas Stars Blog) --
Dallas Stars Owner Thomas O. Hicks announced today that he has restructured the NHL club’s hockey management staff, naming Joe Nieuwendyk as the team’s new General Manager. As part of the reorganization, Co-General Managers Brett Hull and Les Jackson have been reassigned within the hockey club into positions that focus on their respective strengths. Hull will serve as Executive Vice President and Alternate Governor while Les Jackson will return to his long-time role as Director of Scouting and Player Development.
“We are very excited to secure Joe Nieuwendyk as the General Manager,” said Hicks. “These moves are all about helping this club take the proverbial ‘next step.’ Joe is a leader and has been a winner in everything he has done. He is ready for this opportunity and has a bright future as an NHL General Manager. We want that future to be with the Dallas Stars.

from the Florida Panthers blog at the Sun-Sentinel,
I just spoke on the phone to Joe Nieuwendyk, who was playing with his kids and sounded like he’s enjoying the extra time with family. Anyhow, here are his thoughts on a few issues:
Q: What are you looking to do when your contract runs out with the Panthers on June 30? Are the Maple Leafs, your former team, a team you’d want to work for?
A: “I’m keeping my options open. I should know more down the road. ...I’d certainly would listen to what they have to say. [A move there] may or may not make sense.

From Darren Dreger at TSN,
Sources tell TSN the Toronto Maple Leafs have been shutdown by yet another team in their quest to rebuild management.
Maple Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher asked the Florida Panthers for permission to speak with Joe Nieuwendyk last week and the Panthers declined.
Toronto must wait until July 1 when Nieuwendyk’s contract with the Panthers expires before they can officially approach him.

from George Richards at On Frozen Pond,
Just got off the phone with Joe Nieuwendyk who resigned from his post with the Panthers on Wednesday....
Today, Joe was nothing but complimentary about the Panthers. Here are some of the things Joe told me today. As always, more tomorrow in The Herald…
“It’s true I have decided not to return next season. I’m going to step back and decide what me and the wife are going to do. There are some personal reasons involved. I’m not going to comment about a blog that says I’m not happy with Jacques. These guys gave me an opportunity to stay in hockey. I’ll always appreciate that....”

Nieuwendyk Inspires Panthers

from George Richards at On Frozen Pond,
At first, I didn’t think much of seeing Joe talk to the team during the second intermission. Especially when Zednik was called for an early penalty giving the Canes a chance to break the game open. But then things started to go Florida’s way, and lo and behold, the Cats took advantage. Haven’t seen much of that.
A lot of the guys were praising Joe’s speech, the captain of the team saying it really inspired them.
Now, why would Joe’s voice hold more credence than that of coach/GM Jacques Martin? Or Olli himself?
