Thrashers Coach Gets His Message Across

from Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

He (John Anderson) hadn’t yelled in the postgame locker room Tuesday night. He always prefers to deliver his assessment the next day, when he’s no longer swayed by game-night emotions that might lead him to say something he’ll later regret. But the sleepless overnight wait didn’t make Wednesday’s messsage any less forceful.

He laid down the law in one-on-one meetings with players, and he spoke at length with the entire team on the ice before practice. This was one of his first big tests as an NHL coach, and he made it clear he had no intention of failing it.

All John Anderson

A few Atlanta bloggers had the opportunity to do a Q&A session with coach John Anderson…

from Bill Tiller of the ICEMAN Bloggeth at the AJC,

Then I enquired as to what he thought was the #1 challenge that this team faced in order to improve from last year’s finish to becoming a contending team. He emphatically replied, “I know exactly what it is. It’s getting them to believe in themselves again”. He continued on with that thought by remembering back toward the end of last season that it was clear certain players lost a great deal of confidence in themselves and in the team

All John Anderson

from Blueland Blog,

Last week readers of the Blueland Blog were given the chance to submit questions for new head coach John Anderson. I caught up with him while he was in town (he’s currently in Ontario at a coaching clinic) and asked as many of those questions as I could in the time allotted....

Q. How do you plan on getting the most out of Ilya Kovalchuk?

Open the gate and let him go.

Q. What current hockey coach do you most admire?

Bruce Boudreau. I respect a lot of the things he does.

Boudreau’s Success Paved the Way for Anderson

From Mike Brophy at The Hockey News,

John Anderson just may want to send his old pal Bruce Boudreau a thank-you card.

Given Boudreau’s success this season – he was named NHL coach of the year after a lengthy coaching stint in the minors – it made it easy for the Atlanta Thrashers to sign Anderson as their new coach.

Like Boudreau, Anderson has been a great success story in the minors, winning five championships including the American League crown this year with the Chicago Wolves.

And if you really want to get to know John Anderson, you can check out his recent experience getting a makeover. From spa treatments to new suits, it seems Anderson was getting ‘dressed for success’ even before he got tapped for the Thrashers’ job. Video below:

It’s Official: Thrashers Hire Anderson

After the mixed information yesterday, the Thrashers have now confirmed their choice of head coach, John Anderson. From the Globe & Mail:

“John has an impressive record of success as a head coach and we are excited to be adding him to our organization,” said [GM Don] Waddell. “He’s a proven winner whose leadership and experience behind the bench will play a vital role in the resurgence of our hockey club.”

Report: Anderson New Atlanta Coach

from TSN,

The Atlanta Thrashers hired John Anderson as their new head coach on Thursday, promoting him from their American Hockey League affiliate in Chicago.

continued

Update 1:39am ET:(Alanah) I’ve added “Report” to the post title, as GM Don Waddell is denying the TSN story. From Mike Knobler at the AJC --

Sometime over the next few days, we might learn if the difference between TSN’s report the Thrashers have hired John Anderson and Don Waddell’s denial of that TSN report comes down to semantics or something more.

In other words, is this the equivalent of “Nobody’s hired until the general manager says he is,” or is this a situation that could still lead to someone other than Anderson behind the Thrashers’ bench in the 2008-09 season?

*hat tip to Mirtle for that AJC link. Also to George in the comments for this link.

Atlanta Coach Coming Soon

From Mike Knobler at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Waddell said he will begin interviewing three or four candidates later this week and that two of them will be [John] Anderson, coach of the Thrashers’ top minor-league affiliate, and [Brad] McCrimmon, the Thrashers’ associate coach. [Todd] McLellan, an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings, was in San Jose on Monday interviewing for the Sharks job and will interview for the Thrashers job, too, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said.

“He’s one of several people we’ve reached out to talk to,” Waddell said of McLellan, but there’s no guarantee he’s one of the ones who will have a face-to-face interview.

A coach will be in place before the NHL draft June 20-21, Waddell said.

Applications for Thrashers’ Coaching Job

From Scott J. Powers at the Daily Herald,

John Anderson has been waiting his entire coaching career for a shot at the NHL.  With the firing of Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley on Wednesday, that shot may arrive for the 10-year Chicago Wolves coach.

“I would hope so,” said the 50-year-old Anderson. “It’s not a good thing that someone gets fired, but someone has to pick up the pieces. If I don’t, someone else will. If there’s an opportunity in Atlanta, I’d like a whack at it. I think I could fill the job.”

Anderson has done everything else. He starred in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1970s and ‘80s. As a coach, he has succeeded at nearly every minor-league level. Since becoming the Wolves coach in 1997, he has won two Turner Cups and one Calder Cup, and he made the playoffs eight times and has had a winning record every year.

“If I’m not ready now, I’ll never be,” he said. “I’ve coached teams that have won championships. I’ve played in the National (Hockey) League. I’ve played on Team Canada. I’m ready. I’m ready for that job.”
