John MacLean Added To Carolina Coaching Staff

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has hired John MacLean as an assistant coach. MacLean joins Head Coach Kirk Muller and Assistant Coaches Dave Lewis, Rod Brind’Amour and Tom Barrasso in the team’s coaching offices.

“I’m very pleased to add another character leader to our coaching staff,” said Rutherford.

MacLean, 47, spent nine seasons as a coach in the New Jersey Devils organization, including seven years as an assistant coach. The Oshawa, Ont., native served as head coach of the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2009-10, leading the Devils’ affiliate to its best-ever record and first-ever playoff berth. He was named head coach of the New Jersey Devils prior to the 2010-11 season, but was replaced 33 games into his first season as an NHL head coach.

Afternoon Line

“I’m not the reason (why MacLean was fired). Don’t worry.  Everybody has their own opinion, but in the situation that we are, (a coach gets fired). It’s unfortunate, but we have to live with it and move forward.”

Devils Coach Made The Decision To Not Dress Kovlachuk

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

MacLean would not reveal the specifics behind the decision to sit Kovalchuk, but said it was his decision and no one else’s.

“That’s between him and I,” MacLean said. “That was my decision.”

When asked if it was his decision or management’s decision, MacLean, said “No, it was my decision.”

MacLean said he did not regret that decision, which he made “probably mid-day.”

“I take responsibility for all my decisions that I make. That’s including that decision and including responsibility for games.”

Evening Line

“We need to win. Yeah, we’d like to have a win.  But the thing that is more urgent that I’d like to see is for us to play a full, 60-minute hockey game. We want to put a complete game together. That’s what I’m more concerned with. The wins will come if we can play smarter and put in a full 60-minute effort.”

Isn’t It About Time John MacLean Gets A Shot At The Devils Coaching Job?

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Now that Jacques Lemaire, whose first tenure in New Jersey from 1993-94 through 1997-98 established the foundation of excellence that would follow on the banks of the Hudson, has announced his retirement just one year into his encore, Lamoriello should reach into another winning organization for the Devils’ next head coach.

And that would be his own.

For the timing is right and the time is now to promote John MacLean, who guided the AHL Lowell Devils to the playoffs in his first year running the show behind the bench after seven seasons as an assistant in New Jersey.

John MacLean Deserves A Chance In New Jersey

from Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger,

The Devils proved this year to have plenty of skilled offensive players. Why squash that with a coach like Lemaire, who at 63 is nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career anyway?

Lamoriello has an opportunity to develop his own Hall of Fame coach now, someone who could run this young team from behind the bench for more than just a season or two.

John MacLean asked out of the Devils once before. Give him this opportunity, and you get the sense that unlike too many of his predecessors, he’d be the right fit—and in it for the long haul.
