Tavares On the Rise

from Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail,

John Tavares, the New York Islanders centre who was the NHL’s player of the month for January, is working the corners. He spins, he rolls off two checkers, he has his head raised like a cobra in search of opportunity. He works through traffic by keeping everything in so tight to his body they cannot stop him from slipping by. He sees an opening no one else has seen, passes quickly and, instantly, a goal is scored.

Tavares is only 21 years of age, and though ESPN recently ranked the “Top 25 NHL players under age of 25” and somehow left him off the list, he is today the talk of the league after scoring nine goals and 13 assists in only 13 games last month and rising into the top five in league scoring.

He is far, far from the fastest player in the game, and yet he is also unstoppable. He works corners as effectively as, but different from, the Sedin twins of the Vancouver Canucks. He has, as Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson noted Friday before the Senators and Islanders met in Ottawa, “incredible hands and vision.”

Where does it come from? Winter or summer? Hockey rink or lacrosse box?

Tavares Just Wants To Play

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

With all the buzz surrounding young guns like Steve Stamkos, Drew Doughty and Taylor Hall, existing off Broadway has meant less attention for Tavares, perhaps not an unwelcome development for a young man who has been under the microscope since he was granted “exceptional” early entry into the OHL in 2005.

“There’s more attention (with the Islanders) than people realize,” said Tavares, who wasn’t a Calder Trophy finalist in his rookie year but has a solid 53 goals in his first two seasons and six already this year.

“But there are days where I don’t get it as much compared to how much I got it in junior. I remember when I was first accepted into the OHL and how people took it negatively. I just wanted to play, and I was 14 years old. That’s when I first realized there were two sides to the coin.”

NHL Stars of the Week

NEW YORK (October 17, 2011)— Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Phil Kessel, New York Islanders center John Tavares and Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen have been named the NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the week.

Each Monday, the NHL will recognize three players who delivered the League’s top performances over the past week. Due to the mid-week start to the regular season Oct. 6, today’s selections were based on games from Thursday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 16.

Isles Finalize Tavares Extension, Is Bailey Next?

image

Shortly before 1 PM, John Tavares put pen to paper and finalized his six-year contract extension for a total of $33 million.  This is a fantastic deal for both the Islanders and for Tavares.  Comparing the JT deal with the recent Tyler Myers deal in Buffalo, I think the Isles get a much better value.  The cap hit per season for the JT and Myers deals are the same at $5.5 million.

Tavares Extension Official

UNIONDALE, NY (September 15, 2011) - The New York Islanders announced today that John Tavares has signed a six-year contract extension. The deal will go into effect on July 1, 2012 and will run through 2017-18.

Tavares led all Islanders in scoring in each of his first two National Hockey League campaigns. The Islanders’ first overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft will turn 21 on Sept. 20.

NY Islanders Will Hold Press Conference Tomorrow At 1 PM

image

From the NY Islanders Twitter account:

Press conference tomorrow with John Tavares and Garth Snow.

The press conference is scheduled for 1 PM and is presumably to announce a contract extension for JT.  Reports have been that the deal is either 5 or 6 years for around $5.5 million per season.  Some think that the Isles are also going to be announcing they have named Tavares as captain at this presser, but I don’t think they will.  I think they are going to wait until after training camp to announce their captain and I think it will be Mark Streit.

Update: Per Katie Strang at ESPNNewYork.com, Tavares has agreed to a 6 year extension.

JT Close To Big Contract Extension and Rookie Game Notes

image

According to Newsday and Bob McKenzie, John Tavares is close to signing a big, long-term contract extension with the Islanders.  Reports are that the deal will be around six years with an average salary of around $5.5 million.  If Tavares does indeed sign an extension, it guarantees that the Islanders core of Michael Grabner, Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson, and Tavares are all signed long-term.  People criticize GM Garth Snow for many things, but one thing they can’t get on him for is wasting any time signing the Isles most important players.  Maybe after JT signs his extension, the media across the border will finally stop reporting that he wants off of Long Island and wants to play for the Leafs.

Multi-Year Tavares Deal Close with NYI

... and Tyler Myers with the Buffalo Sabres, too.

From Bob McKenzie’s Twitter:

Nothing official just yet, but John Tavares and Tyler Myers on verge of big, multi-year contract extensions with NYI and BUF, respectively.

...and…

Both deals are expected to be in 6 year range, give or take a year, and worth an average of $5.5M, give or take a few hundred thousand.

...and…

As I said, not “done” yet but close to being put to bed. Both Tavares and Myers have one year left remaining on their entry-level deals.

Arthur Staples at Newsday also reported on the developing Tavares deal earlier in the evening.

Islanders 30 in 30

image

NHL.com’s 30 in 30 takes a look at the New York Islanders today.  The introduction to Brian Compton’s piece:

“The time is now for the New York Islanders.  For a franchise that still doesn’t have a deal in place for a new building, it is imperative that the Islanders accelerate what has been a slow and steady rebuilding process and qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007. GM Garth Snow believed he had assembled a playoff team last summer, then watched his top defenseman Mark Streit and power forward Kyle Okposo suffer serious shoulder injuries before the puck even dropped on the 2010-11 season.”

Captain Anonymous

image

What is a captain?  “A person who is at the head of or in authority over others; chief; leader.”  What is a hockey captain?  “A locker room leader, motivator; a medium between players and upper management; a primary representative of the team both on and off the ice.”

It is a unique situation this off-season that all three New York City metro area teams will be naming a new captain for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.  The New York Rangers have the most candidates and are probably in the best situation with the most quality choices to choose from.  So, we will start with the Rangers and then look at the Devils, who have both the easiest and hardest choices of the three, and finally we will look at the New York Islanders who have the youngest crop of candidates with the most potential.

Go Back To The Igloo and Chill

As most of you know, some fans from some city in Pennsylvania haven’t taken very well to the fact of an organized fan gathering on Friday night, August 19th at Champions on Long Island.

First off, let me discuss what this gathering is for.  The official invite page with a summary of the event can be found here.  The aim and purpose of this party is to gather Islanders fans who are craving for hockey and can’t wait the 55 more days until the season starts.

What Will The Islanders Look Like Today?

In their first game since Friday’s goonfest against Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders are in Buffalo today to take on a Sabres team that needs to win in order to end the day within three points of a playoff spot.

It’ll be interesting to see what condition emotionally the Islanders are in today, not far removed from back-to-back nights that featured a nice shootout win in Montreal and an unforgettable team bonding exercise against the Penguins.

The Sabres obviously won’t complain if New York’s balloon deflates and they come out flat, but it would be foolish to expect it.  The Islanders, who have already beaten the Sabres twice in the past month, are a close-knit group that at last check still has a talented group of young forwards playing on a team with nothing to lose.

Buffalo’s game plan should center around shutting down John Tavares, who had a 4-point night on Friday and has tallied 3 goals, 3 assists, and 16 shots on goal in three games against the Sabres this season.

Ryan Miller will likely get his 31st consecutive start, and Patrick Kaleta is expected to return to the lineup from injury.  The Sabres defeated the Islanders in their only day game played thus far this season, while New York is 3-3-0 in day games.

No Star On Long Island

from Joe Gergen of the Wall Street Journal,

He is not a star. At least not yet in the opinion of National Hockey League officials, who withheld the designation in completing the rosters for the All-Star Game at the end of the month. John Tavares may have been an overall No. 1 draft choice. He may be the brightest light in one of the sport’s darker enclosures. But it will be at least another year before he skates on hockey’s grand stage.

Mr. Tavares remains weighted down by a combination of great expectations and franchise failures. Three decades after creating one of the more remarkable dynasties in NHL history, the Islanders are struggling to attract crowds to the aging Nassau Coliseum, struggling to win a third of their games and struggling to survive in the crowded New York market. A horrendous seven-week skid in which they lost all but one of 21 contests virtually knocked them out of playoff contention well before Christmas and relegated Tavares to an afterthought in the buildup to the showcase event in Raleigh.

There’s no ‘D’ in Buffalo

The biggest concern for the Buffalo Sabres recently has been the lack of coverage in their own end.  New York Islanders star forward John Tavares had a field day in the Buffalo zone Saturday night, and he even half-heartedly noted afterwards that he had so many scoring chances in the 5-3 Isles win that perhaps he should’ve notched two hat tricks instead of his one.

The Sabres have allowed five goals in two of their last three games, and that’s in no small part due to the struggles of the Tyler Myers-Andrej Sekera pairing.  They’re a combined –9 in that stretch.  The play of Myers, who looks clumsy at times and seems to be having issues with his skating, has regressed to where it was during the first month of the season.

Getting some heat of his own, despite a huge lack of defensive support, is goaltender Ryan Miller (17-14-4, 2.72 GAA, .911 save %).  It’ll be interesting to see how this town reacts if the red lamp behind the franchise netminder and fan favorite continues to be lit too often.  A huge component of last year’s 100-point team was Miller’s ability to steal some games, and this season it just hasn’t been happening.

Buffalo will try to tighten things up tomorrow night when the Montreal Canadiens come to town.

Lightning Fall on Long Island as Roloson Shines (Plus, Holiday Greetings from JJ)

The Tampa Bay Lightning came into Wednesday night’s meeting with the New York Islanders with a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the NHL’s Southeast Division.

They left with an overtime loss to the league’s worst team, spoiling a second consecutive solid performance from goaltender Dan Ellis, who stopped 26 saves in defeat.

Dwayne Roloson stood out in goal for New York, turning aside 34 of 35 Lightning shots, John Tavares posted the game-winner and the Islander penalty killers were excellent, neutralizing Tampa Bay with the extra man on five of six opportunities.

Lightning Hit Long Island Amid Latest Turmoil for the Islanders

There are several higher-profile games on tonight’s NHL docket but the Tampa Bay Lightning’s visit to Long Island has my undivided attention this evening (and would still, even were I not tasked with Bolts coverage, nor had I no stifled sentimental attachment to the Isles).

Both clubs have struggled of late, although that doesn’t even begin to tell the tale of the hapless Islanders, 0-9-1 in their last ten and now under the command of a new head coach in Jack Capuano, who was handed the position on an interim basis after Isles’ brass made Scott Gordon the fall guy for their woeful start.

If a team in turmoil is always a dangerous one, what does that say for these Islanders? One would think they’d play some seriously desperate hockey tonight. That said, they’re still the Islanders and whether the players quit on Gordon (as True Hockey’s Andy Strickland reports in his latest installment of Rink Rats), or Gordon truly was the problem or owner Charles Wang and Garth Snow simply ignored the fact that, aside from a few talented youngsters, without injured key pieces Kyle Okposo and Mark Streit, chances for this team’s success were slim from day one, nothing seems to work for this franchise and there are no guarantees.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/25/10 (Catching Up on the Weekend Edition!)

We’ve got some catching up to do as I intentionally stayed off the radar this weekend. (For the first time since the arrival of our second son, we had no visitors! Bliss!) Quick cheers for Friday and Saturday night’s action and then onto toasts and a few highlights from yesterday’s games:

Friday’s Three Cheers:
***Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa: Hat trick, 1,000th career point in 4-2 Senators’ win in Buffalo.
**Rene Bourque, Calgary: Hat trick, assist in 6-2 Flames’ win in Columbus.
*Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay: Hat trick, assist in 5-2 Lightning win in Atlanta.

Saturday’s Three Cheers:
***John Tavares, NYIslanders: First career hat trick in 4-3 loss at Florida.
**Jaroslav Halak, St. Louis: 31 saves in 1-0, overtime blanking of visiting Pittsburgh.
*Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit: Two goals, four points in a 5-4 squeaker over Anaheim at the Joe.

And, finally, on to Sunday’s honors:

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/19/10

Today’s salute to the performances of yesternight, honoring those who shined in leading their clubs to victory:

***Cheers to Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman, who is showing marked improvement early this season and who was named first star in Tampa’s 5-4 win over the visiting Dallas Stars last night. Hedman managed a pair of assists and led all skaters in ice time, sparking an offensive rush on several occasions and, most importantly, playing adept defense in his own end. It is early, as we must continue to note for all who have had fast starts, but Hedman’s growth in year two will play a major factor in the Lightning’s fortunes. So far, with few hiccups, they must be pleased. (Note: They are. Coach Guy Boucher singled Hedman out with post-game praise after the Dallas game.)

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/12/10

Today’s three cheers, saluting those who deserve as much for their performances yesterday:

***Cheers to Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo, whose 41 saves thwarted the efforts of his former club, the Florida Panthers en route to the first win of the season for the Canucks. Luongo’s .973 save percentage through his club’s first two games is hardly anything to scoff at and his quick start is a great sign for a Canucks team with extremely high hopes for the season. As for Florida, 42 shots on goal are great but three goals through two games won’t get the job done and that sort of paltry offensive production could be exactly what keeps the Panthers from succeeding this season. Tomas Vokoun can only keep opponents at bay to a certain extent.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/10/10

Today’s three cheers for those who deserve as much from their performances of a night ago:

***Cheers to Derek Stepan of the New York Rangers, who burst onto the NHL scene last night with a hat trick in his first career game. Dallas’ Fabian Brunnstrom was the last player to manage three goals in his NHL debut and Stepan became the fourth player in league history to accomplish the feat. That it came against the reigning Vezina Trophy winner in Buffalo’s Ryan Miller, too, makes the performance that much more impressive. If Stepan’s contributions in the early-going are any indicator, New York will fare far better than some of us may have predicted.

Tavares Slumping

from Dan Martin of the NY Post,

Garth Snow never doubted whom he would pick with the Islanders’ top selection over the summer and John Tavares has made the Islanders’ GM look good for much of his rookie season.

Lately, however, the young center has seen his production slip significantly, as Tavares only has one point in his last eight games.

But that’s not a cause for concern for Snow.

“He’s 19 years old,” Snow said of Tavares, who has 28 points (16 goals, 12 assists) in his first 40 games in the NHL heading into tonight’s match against Columbus at the Coliseum. “Any time a young guy is going to come out of juniors or college hockey into this league, it’s not going to be a seamless transition.”

Tavares Has The Winning Formula

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,

The learning curve lies ahead for Tavares, but he should have no problem with it. He has Crosby’s demeanour: respectful, ready to learn, yet in a hurry to take in the knowledge.

(Doug) Weight, who recently had H1N1 and jokes that his primary responsibility in taking the team’s franchise player under his wing is “Don’t give him The Swine,” would bet you an NHL paycheque that Tavares will turn into a superstar.

“He just wants to be an islander and be a great player. He’s on his way,” the tutor said. “His shot, his savvy. He’s got it, he gets it, and he wants it.

“He wants to be great. I think he’s going to be a winner.”

Tavares Settling In

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,

As his NHL career nears the end of its first month, Tavares gives the appearance of a player who’s enjoying the learning experience that goes along with the introduction to life in the NHL.

“It’s been great. I’ve been learning a lot, experiencing a lot of new things,” he said after the win against the Rangers. “I’m starting to learn the way of life in the NHL and what it takes to be a pro every day. Everyone from the staff and management, the coaching staff, the trainers and my teammates have been great. They’ve helped me out a lot with stuff away from the ice and allowed me to focus on hockey. That’s made it a lot easier. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Especially when you score a goal to help your team beat its biggest rival, right?

“Being in games like this one is what I worked for as a kid,” he said. “To finally be here and be a part of this is special for me, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Challenges Face Tavares

from Damien Cox of the Spin at the Toronto Star,

Five years after announcing the 150-acre Lighthouse Project, Wang still hasn’t seen a shovel in the ground. The scheme would include a new arena, commercial and residential development including a canal and all kinds of goodies, so naturally there are multiple layers of bureaucracy and politics to wade through, just as there would be in the GTA if such a plan were ever proposed.

Wang has complained the process is taking far too long, which is why he has set an unofficial deadline, and why local politicos are balking.

“We don’t tell them when they have to bring in a Stanley Cup,” said one town official quoted in Newsday.

That’s nasty. The once-great Isles have a lease at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum until 2015, but we already know from Phoenix the NHL doesn’t much worry about that stuff.

So into this maelstrom of insolvency and uncertainty goes Tavares. Stamkos had to deal with a lot of on-ice and off-ice issues in Tampa last season and survived, so theoretically so can Tavares.

It won’t be easy. But it helps that not as many people are watching the Islanders as once did.

Tavares Now The Islanders Focal Point

from Dan Martin of the NY Post,

John Tavares said all the right things yesterday.

When asked if he could do for the Islanders what Sidney Crosby did for the Penguins, the Islanders’ recent first-overall pick said: “I want to be part of the team. It’s not just about me.”

He’s got a point, but the fact is, the Islanders got more than 10,000 fans to show up at the Nassau Coliseum to watch him get drafted—on TV—and had several hundred more come yesterday to his introductory press conference.

Tavares, who turns 19 in September, will skate for the first time with his new team tomorrow during minicamp and will be the focal point from the first game of the season on.

“We’ve got guys around him who will help him,” general manager Garth Snow said. “Whether it’s on the ice or off the ice.”

Leafs Need To Be In A Position To Take Tavares

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

It’s a derby in which the Maple Leafs, not yet bad enough to get better, must have a horse.

Brian Burke knows it, Dave Nonis knows it and even Ron Wilson, you have to believe, knows it.

John Tavares’ special performance on a big stage for Team Canada in the opening game of the world junior championship in Ottawa on Friday night was just the latest piece of compelling evidence that made it clear the Leafs need to be at least in a position to win the draft lottery and land the No. 1 overall pick next June.

The National Hockey League released its preliminary rankings for the 2009 Entry Draft on Tuesday, with Oshawa Generals forward John Tavares leading the Ontario Hockey League’s rankings and Swedish defenceman Victor Hedman ranked No. 1 among European skaters.

Tavares, in his fourth season with the Generals, has scored 174 goals and 191 assists in 214 OHL games. This season, he has 17 goals and 36 points in 23 games.

Who’s #1

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,

To say John Tavares’ star has fallen would be a stretch, but it seems he’s no longer the consensus No. 1 pick.

A little more than a year ago, there was a push to change the NHL entry draft rules to accommodate Tavares as a 17-year-old, while the Leafs were examining whether they could fast-track him on a minor-league contract, amid talk that an all-out rebuild could see a last-place Toronto team pick him first overall.

Now, some NHL scouts contacted by Sun Media are wondering if his No. 1 ranking will be challenged in the coming season.

The Next, Next One?

from Lynn Zinser of the New York Times,

“There are a lot of Next Ones,” said David Andrews, chief executive of the American Hockey League, the N.H.L.’s top minor league. “And that’s not to say John Tavares isn’t. But there are 200 first- and second-round draft picks in the A.H.L., and none of them thought they were going to play in the American Hockey League.”

For now, Tavares deals with his fame by staying in a protective circle formed by his team, his coach and his family. His father, Joe, and mother, Barbara, and his two younger sisters make the drive from their hometown, Oakville, for most of Oshawa’s games.

The Life Of A Player Agent

from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,

One debate percolating these days centres on Tavares’ agent Bryan Deasley, a 38-year-old former Calgary Flames first-round pick – he never made it to the NHL – who hopes to make Tavares the underpinning of his player agent business. Industry sources say some rivals likely have already tried to poach Tavares.

“It’s nasty,” says Brian Lawton, a former NHL player who recently quit the agent industry to try to land an NHL management job. “I bet some of the big shops have tried to contact John two or three times already.”...
