Ericsson Fighting The Flu

from Vicki Hall of Flames Insider,

Defenceman Jonathan Ericsson missed the morning skate Saturday with flu-like symptoms. His status is questionable for tonight’s clash with the Calgary Flames.

“We hope it’s nothing major,” said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. “But what we’re concerned about is that’s what happened in Edmonton. It was nothing major in the morning and suddenly, by night, it was.”

As a rookie, Ericsson dazzled last year in the playoffs, but he’ struggled in his first full year, of NHL employment on a pairing with Brett Lebda.

“Lebs and him have been on the ice for some of the ugliest goals in hockey,” Babcock said.

Ericsson Growing Into His Position

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail (Tuesday edition),

“I didn’t even know I was drafted,” said Ericsson, whose Wings are tied 1-1 with the Ducks in their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series. “I wasn’t following it that day. I wasn’t even thinking about it.”

Ericsson was an instructor at a youth hockey camp in Sweden when a local reporter informed him of the news. Ericsson remarked that he didn’t contemplate the tall odds he had to overcome to play in the NHL, he was just excited to be taken by the same NHL club that housed Swedish heroes such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom.

“I was just thrilled to be drafted,” the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Ericsson said....

“He’s a lot like [Anaheim’s Chris] Pronger, only he doesn’t crosscheck and do that sort of stuff,” Babcock said.

Ericsson Proves His Worth With Wings

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock isn’t surprised by rookie Jonathan Ericsson’s effectiveness because he has been working as the defenseman’s chief lobbyist almost from the day he first saw him.

“I’ve seen him for three years and pushed to have him on the team for two years, but I didn’t have votes,” Babcock jokes.

Babcock simply couldn’t talk general manager Ken Holland into straying from the team’s philosophy of keeping prospects in the American Hockey League until they are ready to contribute significantly at the NHL level.

Wings Produce Another Defenseman

from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding at USA TODAY,

Detroit Red Wingts defenseman Jonathan Ericsson’s strong play in the opening game of the Western Conference quarterfinal against the Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday is another illustration of the rewards of a franchise that can afford to be patient with its draft picks.

Ericsson, who scored in the game, is a 25-year-old rookie with just 27 games of NHL experience and I believe he has a chance to become an NHL All-Star over the next three seasons. The former ninth-round pick from Sweden played three seasons in the American Hockey League, making the final adjustments from center to defense and now he looks like a veteran performer.

Ericsson Plans To Be In Detroit On Opening Night

from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,

While many of the team draft tables around him were already empty, Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill had a name ready when it came time for the last pick of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

That final selection, commonly called Mr. Irrelevant, has turned out to be anything but irrelevant.

Defenceman Jonathan Ericsson, now the first name mentioned when it comes to the Wings’ top prospects, is the team’s most intriguing storyline heading into training this week.
