Sabres ‘D’ Trying to Put it All Together

If you think the Sabres aren’t scoring enough goals, well, don’t blame the defense.  Buffalo’s blueliners have racked up 13 goals in 19 games.  Tonight’s opponent, the high flying Washington Capitals, ‘only’ have 12 from their defensemen.

Sure, the offensive contributions of Jordan Leopold, Steve Montador (yep, really) and Tyler Myers have been a tonic for this team as it tries to climb out of its self-dug hole.  Buffalo has gone to overtime in five straight games and has earned 9 of 10 possible points.  But let’s not kid ourselves - the Sabres will have to cut down on mistakes in their own zone if they’re serious about being contenders again.

Ryan Miller’s Place In The 2010-11 Vezina Discussion

While it certainly can’t be said with a straight face that Ryan Miller doesn’t get enough respect, there are some pundits out there who have declared, almost as a foregone conclusion, that the 30-year old Sabres franchise netminder will still be solid but won’t be able to duplicate his Vezina-worthy magic of 2009-10. 

Whether because of changes in the Sabres defensive corps, having played too many games, or simply from the difficulty of maintaining such a high level of play in an ultra-competitive league where the difference in the talent level of goaltenders has shrunk significantly, discussions by many about Miller’s prospects for the upcoming season are accompanied by buzzwords and catch phrases like “dropoff” and “coming back down to earth”.

Bouwmeester Traded To Calgary

Panthers get Jordan Leopold (ufa July 1st) and a 3rd round pick.

So Sutter has a week to convince Bouwmeester to join the Flames.

It also means that the Flames must lose some salary somewhere.

In other words, it’s just starting.

Ott Getting Three Games

Steve Ott was defiant in his defense of his hit on Colorado’s Jordan Leopold, which resulted in a three-game suspension today.

“I finished my hit. My one foot did leave the ice, but that’s because my other foot was planted. My right foot never left the ice,” Ott said. “I hit him shoulder to shoulder.”

Dallas Stars forward Steve Ott will receive a three-game suspension for his hit Sunday on Colorado defenseman Jordan Leopold, Stars co-GM Les Jackson confirmed Tuesday night.

Ott had a phone conference with NHL director of operations Colin Campbell on Tuesday, and Campbell is expected to announce the suspension today.

Leopold Out Two Months

via the Colorado Avalanche,

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that defenseman Jordan Leopold will require wrist surgery following an injury suffered in the third period of Colorado’s 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night at Rexall Place.

Leopold will be sidelined for approximately two months.
