Ninja Sharks: Tuesday Captain’s Practice

Monday, a charity golf event kept at least some Sharks away from the 10am practice. Acolatse and Greiss were the only Sharks there until 11, when McLaren ventured out. Acolatse entertained us early with some subtle trick shots, and later Nolan gave Greiss some unrelenting grief. I haven’t seen Greiss for a while, so I won’t make too much of that. Like, I won’t hope Nolan ends up with some team more distant than the Canucks. Well, maybe I’ll hope for that just a little bit.
Tuesday, Sharks far outnumbered visiting skaters. Finally! Tikhonov, Stuart, Nolan and Cheechoo were there again, but there was only one other visiting skater, and two extra goalies.

Early extension for Couture

Last night, Ray Ratto broke the news that Logan Couture and the Sharks had agreed to a 2 year contract extension. This morning, Twitter tells us that the numbers are $2.75M for the first year and $3M for the second. That sounds eminently reasonable considering what Couture brings to the team. By signing early for a reasonable sum, Couture follows in the footsteps of some of the team’s most prominent players, though following usually isn’t his style.
I don’t put much stock in talk of Couture contracting sophomoritis this season. Being picky about details, I might say this is only sort of his second NHL season. He played a lot in the 2009-2010 season. Maybe the end of last season was his sophomore slump. If that’s all we had to fear I can live with that. More importantly, I don’t believe he’s wired that way.

From the Q&A session with coach Todd McLellan and Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks.
*today’s Canucks transcripts here.

Q. (No microphone.)
COACH McLELLAN: I thought that line wasn’t very sharp. It was a little sluggish, didn’t produce a lot. Not a direct reflection on Logan by any means, because there were three of them there. But they can be better.
Q. Joe Thornton is always the center of the attention. He’s been criticized for his playoff performances in the past. Can you talk about his performance in this year’s playoff?
COACH McLELLAN: I’ll go backwards and start from last year. Last year I thought he showed good signs of growth, the ability to lead the team. As a result, when we were looking at our vacant captaincy, he proved to us last year he was a deserving candidate. We picked him.
Throughout the year he’s had an excellent season. Many will say his numbers are down, which they obviously are. But ultimately I think the results are up when you look at his play. That may sound strange, but I truly believe he’s come a long way. His leadership ability in the locker room is very strong. I think he does it as much by example now on the ice as he does it verbally in the locker room. He’s come a long, long way.

Trophy Talk: Southeast-Style
by Jon Jordan on 02/10/11 at 01:40 PM ET

We’ve said it several times this season – that the Southleast is no more. With 308 combined points in the standings, Tampa Bay, Washington, Carolina, Atlanta and Florida comprise the Eastern Conference’s top division by that standard. Only the Pacific Division (321 points) has had more success as a group this season in the entire league. There’s even a fighting chance that four Southeast Division clubs could make the playoffs.
Suffice it to say, anyone still knocking the hockey played down here in this corner of the continent can be officially discredited. Clearly, anyone in that category hasn’t been paying attention this season.
Beyond team accolades, when the book is closed on the 2010-11 season, the Southeast Division has a legitimate chance for representation in almost every major year-end individual award. Some have sturdier ground to stand on than others in that respect but several individuals from Southeast clubs look to at least be in the conversation for some hardware in Vegas in late June.
Since premature awards speculation has started to heat up at a few other media outlets – always fun to keep tabs on ESPN’s Trophy Tracker but no Tampa Bay love in the Adams race, really? – here’s a list of potential trophy candidates from the Southeast Division, in no particular order.
