Fleury Practices With Penguins

Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury practiced with his teammates for the first time since suffering an undisclosed injury in a game against the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 15.
Fleury had been taking shots in pre-practice sessions with the Penguins for the past week but participated in a full team practice, splitting time with John Curry, for the first time since the injury.

Penguins Going to Arbitration with Fleury

The Pittsburgh Penguins have elected to file for salary arbitration with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Arbitration hearings are set by the National Hockey League and take place from July 20 to August 4. Both sides can continue to negotiate a contract until that time. As a result of the filing, the Penguins retain his rights and he will not become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Let’s not get carried away with the Marc-Andre Fleury phenom stuff. One prominent goalie coach tells us that if anyone cost Pitt the series, it was the Pens’ netminder. “He started the series badly and that’s how he ended it—with two terrible goals in Game Six. The second [rebound] goal was bad and he had no business letting the puck go through his legs before he eventually knocked it in on the winner. By contrast, Chris Osgood made the saves that he had to make.” The bottom line on Fleury is simple; his consistency is missing.

Looking for Offense

The way Marc-André Fleury sees it, the path to success for the Pittsburgh Penguins is simple: “If I can stop more pucks and we score more goals, we’ll be all right.”
But those few words mask a world of hurt for the Penguins, who need to win Monday to prevent the Detroit Red Wings from winning their first Stanley Cup since 2002. The Red Wings have a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven NHL championship series thanks to their efficient 2-1 win over the Penguins on Saturday night.
Actually, Fleury could have left himself out of the above equation. His work in the Penguins goal in the last two games was above reproach. It is the work of their offence in all four games so far that is wanting.

Holmstrom Tough to Replace

Not having Holmstrom in his face would make it even better for Fleury.
“It’s always tougher as a goalie when you have somebody in front,” said Fleury, who was the first pick in the 2003 entry draft. “At the same time, every playoff, every series, every team, they put that guy in there. We always did a good job with him, and we always came out on top.”
Holmstrom isn’t just any guy. He has four goals and 12 points in the playoffs and is a perfect complement to linemates Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
The Red Wings have no shortage of talent—Johan Franzen has a playoff-high 13 goals, Zetterberg has 12 and Datsyuk nine—but they have no one as effective at going to the net and refusing to budge come high stick or high water.

Not A Good Start

The Penguins’ lack of experience on hockey’s grandest stage could not have been better illustrated than Marc-Andre Fleury’s tumble as he led his team onto the ice Saturday night for Stanley Cup finals opener.
The anxious Fleury, 23, ran down the Joe Louis Arena tunnel and splat. He tripped on the last step and fell headlong into the rink. Fleury is lucky his teammates didn’t topple like dominoes behind him. The Penguins real stumbling block, of course, was the Detroit Red Wings.

Impressive Penguins

The Penguins are simply too much. Too fast. Too precise. Too disciplined. And too reliably backstopped by the consistently brilliant Marc-Andre Fleury. All of it too much of a mountain for anyone on this side of the Conferencial Divide.
Even within the mandatory confidence of professional athletes, did anyone in the room think this team was capable of winning 11 of the first 12 postseason games?
“You never think that way,” Ruutu said. “It doesn’t matter how you keep going, just so you keep going.”
You might change your thinking now that the Penguins walked into this building where they hadn’t won all year, where they were supposed to get jumped by a desperate hockey club stung by misfortune, and turned the Flyers into the jumpees.

Fleury Fits In Well With Penguins Defensive System

So is it Fleury or is it the team concept?
“I will say it is a combination of both,” said coach Michel Therrien. “First of all, Marc-Andre, he’s really square to the puck. The game slowed down in front of him. That’s normal. Well, he’s only 23, but he has got a few years of experience and you ask any goalie with time and experience, and the game slows down in front of you so he doesn’t have to make those big saves when he’s out of position.
“And in the meantime, we’ve played a much better defensive game as well. You put those two together, and you get the result that defensively you are better.”
There’s no question Therrien’s coaching style has helped Fleury, just as it would help any goalie.

Fleury Nearing Star Status

Perhaps five goals allowed in four consecutive victories against a team beaten up physically and psychologically isn’t a large enough sampling of evidence to declare him a fully budded star.
Yet for Marc-Andre Fleury, for a goaltender with too much cumbersome playoff history packed into the back end of his 23 years, this was indeed a triumph to savor and, as he giddily warbles after some saves, let out a yell.
“I don’t see them as much as ghosts, but as experience I got through all those years,” the Penguins’ lanky goalie said late last night, after he made 21 saves and made the Senators go away in a four-game sweep that ended with a 3-1 victory at Scotiabank Place.

Fleury At The Top Of His Game

This Penguins team has small galaxy of stars. There is Sidney Crosby, of course, Evgeni Malkin, who finished second in NHL scoring this season, Sergei Gonchar, who will get some consideration for the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman, Marian Hossa and Gary Roberts, who had two goals, including the winner, in Game 1.
Although Fleury was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft, he has been almost cocooned as he has learned to be an elite player, putting behind him questions about his ability and durability.
“Now he sees the play, he’s more mature. He’s not surprised with plays or with shots,” Penguins coach Michele Therrien said. “There’s no doubt, this is the best I’ve seen from Marc-Andre Fleury the last month and a half.”

A Canadian optometrist has unwittingly given the Pittsburgh Penguins an advantage going into their opening National Hockey League playoff game Wednesday against her darling Ottawa Senators.
Optometrist Janet Leduc wrote in a letter to the Penguins’ coaching staff some months ago that their goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, could improve his game if he ditched his trademark yellow pads.

Pens Recall Fleury

Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from his conditioning assignment in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL), it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Fleury started five games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since being assigned for conditioning on February 10th. He posted a 3-2-0 record with a .950 save percentage and a 1.42 goals-against-average, allowing just seven goals in the five contests. Both of his losses came in 1-0 games. Dating back to the start of the 2005-06 season, Fleury holds a 13-2-2 record in his last 17 AHL starts

Fleury Goes White

...That’s because his trademark school bus yellow pads are gone, replaced by nondescript white ones.
“I got a letter from an eye doctor and he told me yellow was the color you pick up the quickest with your eyes. So I thought I would try the white ones,” Fleury said. “Then the players on the team said it makes me look a little bigger. So I thought if it gives me a little advantage, I’ll take it.”
It’s not the pads, though, that are the focus of Fleury’s trip back to the AHL. It’s what lies beneath.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled goaltender Ty Conklin from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL) on an emergency basis, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Penguins coach Michel Therrien today characterized starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury’s injury as a mild ankle sprain.
He is listed as day to day because the injury is not severe enough to warrant placing him on injured reserve.

Fleury Thought Goal

Late in the third period, Fleury moved out of the crease to his right and found himself with the puck and a clear path to the Coyotes’ vacant net.
He smelled a goal.
“That was the first time I got to try to shoot,” Fleury said. “And we were two goals ahead. You don’t want try it with one goal. It was the perfect time.”
He didn’t get the chance.
“Then [defenseman Darryl] Sydor came back and he took it,” Fleury said.

Penguins Need Help - Not Just In Goal

The most fascinating aspect of the Penguins’ struggle is that it provides us the first opportunity to gauge what kind of administrator general manager Ray Shero will be. Because this is his first GM job, we have no history to review.
But my hunch is Shero will be able to walk the fine line between aggressiveness and panic. I believe he will continue to look for scoring wingers, and I believe he will continue to be patient with Fleury. I believe he will be more patient with Fleury than his coach seems to be. I think if Shero believed Fleury needed an older goalie playing beside him, he would have acquired one last summer.

The Penguins have sputtered through the first 16 games of this season, and it remains to be seen what, if anything, general manager Ray Shero is going to do about it.
Shero has made it quite clear what he won’t do.
He won’t fire coach Michel Therrien.

“He’s such a great athlete,” Brodeur said. “What I look at is a guy’s ability to skate, and he’s a really good skater. The foundation is his mobility, how athletic he is, how competitive he is.
“Everything is there. It’s just that sometimes a couple of things are going the wrong way and the next thing you know, everything doesn’t fit.
“But when he finds a way to put everything together, relax and be patient, he has so much skill, so much speed, that he’s going to be all right. I love watching him play, because he’s a spectacular goalie.”

Fleury Feeling It Again

Last season, Fleury became the Pens’ undisputed No. 1 goaltender, finishing with a save percentage of .906. However, the whispering started when the Penguins were quickly dispatched in the first round of the playoffs by the Ottawa Senators.
Those whispers grew much louder a few weeks ago when the Penguins did not start well. Sidney Crosby may not have been scoring, and still isn’t, but it was Fleury who took the criticism.
“The one thing we can’t forget is that [Fleury] is the youngest No. 1 goalie in the league,” Penguins head coach Michel Therrien said yesterday. “He is still learning. It seemed a lot of people were panicking, but we weren’t panicking because we knew his game was going to get back where it was supposed to be.”

No Panic In Pittsburgh

“We’ve got confidence in Marc-Andre Fleury,” Therrien said. “He won a lot of games for us last year. We believe in the kid. He just needs to be himself.
“Right now, we’re not panicking. We know that he’s going to get better. It’s a matter of time. There’s nothing wrong with facing adversity for a player or as a team because you know that eventually it’s going to make you better.”
General manager Ray Shero also backs Fleury and denied a report by TSN’s Bob McKenzie that the Penguins are shopping for a veteran goaltender to back up and perhaps challenge Fleury.
