Gaborik is “Good to Go”

From John Shipley at the Pioneer Press:

Marian Gaborik will return to the lineup for the first time since Oct. 14 when the Wild play host to Calgary on Wednesday night at Xcel Energy Center.

After a 90-minute practice today, Gaborik declared himself fit.

“I’m good to go for tomorrow,” he said.

Gaborik Looking At A Wednesday Return

via Bruce Brothers of the Pioneer Press,

All signs point to Marian Gaborik returning to the ice for the Wild on Wednesday night.

“It looks pretty good,” he said of the possibility he would be ready to play against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night at the Xcel Energy Center, adding that his status remains “day by day.

“Today was a good day. Hopefully, it’ll be another good day tomorrow, and if everything goes good, hopefully jump into the game Wednesday.”

Wild coach Jacques Lemaire said Gaborik “looks very good” and added, “I just want him back.”

But, Lemaire cautioned, “It’ll be up to him.”

Gaborik Not Ready To Play

from Russo’s Rants,

Gaborik was clearly happy to be on the ice with his teammates. The last time was Oct. 30, but that was just an optional morning skate and he sustained a setback. He was chirping some of his teammates this morning and was smiling a lot.

Lemaire was less excited. He was in kind of an abrasive mood. He said Gaborik was a long way of playing, said he was rusty and almost had an “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude. After all, Gaborik’s sustained setbacks before.

Lemaire even sarcastically said, “If we’re not too strict with his defense, we’ll be fine. He’ll be able to get some goals.”

Gaborik Value Keeps Declining

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

This contract ordeal has been watched closely by the entire NHL, and over the past month the Star Tribune has talked to nearly a dozen current and former league executives. Many refused to be quoted or asked for anonymity, but they all had an opinion—from “Gaborik should re-sign” for a fair deal to “the Wild waited too long.”

“Unfortunately, it’s as difficult and challenging a situation that you can be in,” said Doug MacLean, the former Columbus Blue Jackets general manager.

That’s in part because it’s hard to see an end game that has Gaborik re-signing, yet the team’s ability to trade him has been halted by this injury. It’s a worst-case scenario for the Wild.

“You’ve got the [March 4 trade] deadline,” MacLean said. “That’s the sad part of this whole scenario. They had an amazing asset that’s diminished.”

Gaborik Watch

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

There is a rumor out there that the Minnesota Wild are on the verge of trading Gaborik. As in any hour or day now, it’s that close.

Under normal circumstances, this wouldn’t be a reach.

Gaborik, after all, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

Gaborik, thus far, has rejected all contract offers from the Wild and it doesn’t look like he’s about to put pen to paper in the Twin Cities any time soon.

Risebrough, by the way according to multiple sources, was at last night’s Ottawa-Rangers game — two teams I said weeks ago made sense for a potential Marian Gaborik trade. Bryan Murray, Ottawa’s GM, loves making blockbusters, and Rangers GM Glen Sather is buddy buddy with Risebrough

Clarification: Doug Risebrough was on the Ottawa-Rangers press box seating chart, but he never made it to the game. He planned to scout the game, but flight problems forced him to detour to Pittsburgh. He was in Pittsburgh by 4:45 yesterday..

Gaborik Spotting

from Tom Powers of the Pioneer Press,

Gaborik never even got close to the real practice.

Later, during our ghostly meeting, Gaborik noted: “I skated for a little while today.”

Anyway, he doesn’t sound like a man who is going to be playing hockey any time soon. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. Gaborik can’t be traded until he shows he is healthy. And he really can’t be signed to a mega-contract until he shows he is healthy. Would you give him more than $82 million right now? I asked him if this was the worst time of his life.

“I’ve had worse,” he muttered.

I didn’t have the heart to ask him what those were. But at least he’s alive.

Demitra Says Wild Should Just Sign Gaborik

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

Talked with Pavol Demitra this morning. He’s close to returning from a rib injury but won’t play tonight. He was disappointed. He was very friendly and said Jacques Lemaire treated him incredibly. He said his biggest frustration in Minnesota was not playing center, but being switched from line to line.  He was also good talking about Marian Gaborik’s situation and said the Wild should just sign him.

Gaborik A Tough Sell

from Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated,

With potential trading partners just saying no, it’s starting to seem more likely that impending free agent Marian Gaborik will remain with the Wild, at least until the new year. Even then he’ll be a tough sell, unless GM Doug Risebrough is willing to lower his demands.

“There’s nowhere near the market for him that you think,” one league exec said. “He’s a highly skilled guy, but the risk is so high. Even if you were able to sign him [to an extension] as part of the deal, you have to consider his [injury] history. I’m not sure it’s worth the risk to a contender or a young team that’s rebuilding.”

Pens Not Interested In Gaborik

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Pay no attention to rampant Internet speculation that the Penguins are interested in trading for Minnesota left wing Marian Gaborik. His injury history is a major concern. His asking price, at least $9 million annually, is a deal-breaker. The Penguins are not sure the salary cap will rise beyond next season, meaning a third high-priced forward on a long-term deal is unlikely.

High Risk, High Reward Hockey

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,

With the two Alexes – Ovechkin and Semin – leading the charge, the Washington Capitals might be the greatest show on the ice right now, the heir apparent to the swashbuckling Edmonton Oilers of the mid-1980s. If that’s the case, then defenceman Mike Green is the 21st-century equivalent of Paul Coffey in style and approach – one of half-a-dozen promising young rearguards who will get a long look from the management staff of Canada’s 2010 Olympic team. Green plays a high-risk, high-reward style. Most nights, he is a defenceman in name only and plays almost as a fourth forward.

This is done with the permission of his coach Bruce Boudreau who, since taking over the reins of the Capitals last December, loosened them considerably on all of his young players. Now, instead of making a defensive choice on a 50-50 puck battle, they have permission to err on the offensive side. Some nights, it backfires, but on balance, it generally works.

Who Made Up Those Numbers

from John Shipley of the Pioneer Press,

Convinced his client has been the victim of a “character assassination,” Marian Gaborik’s agent Ron Salcer on Wednesday denied a handful of contract numbers that have surfaced recently in newspapers and blogs.

Salcer specifically denied a New York Post report that Gaborik is asking the Wild for a 10-year, $100 million deal, and said he has not received offers of $85 million over 10 years, $90 million over 10 years or $70 million over 10 years.

“When and if they do get offered,” he said, “maybe something will happen.”

Since this lovely rumor seems to have gained some traction among legitimate news organizations, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about rumors in general and the ``Marian Gaborik might be coming to L.A.’’ rumor in specific. It’s rumors such as this one that tend to make my hair fall out in clumps.

Gaborik makes $6.3 million this season and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Those are two HUGE red flags that should indicate to anyone that he’s not coming to the Kings.

Shopping Gaborik

from Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune,

Gaborik, who has a history of abdominal and leg injuries, has missed the past two games because of a “lower body injury.” Because there’s always a risk of injury with Gaborik, the latest leg problem has convinced the Wild it’s important to investigate trading him sooner than later, sources say….

It’s believed Risebrough has had trade talks with Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey and Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi. Risebrough will attend Thursday’s GM meetings in Chicago, so talks could heat up with a number of teams.

It’s believed the Wild is interested in Canadiens defenseman prospect Ryan McDonagh, a former Cretin-Derham Hall star and Minnesota Mr. Hockey who was Montreal’s No. 12 pick in 2007 and plays now at the University of Wisconsin. The Wild would also want an established player.

The Gaborik Talk

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

At the moment, the Marian Gaborik-to-Montreal rumour that made the rounds in cyberspace this week has its genesis in one thing, and one thing alone – the close relationship between the man who may eventually have to trade Gaborik if he can’t sign him to a contract extension, Minnesota Wild general manager Doug Risebrough, and his long-time Habs’ teammate, Gainey. If Risebrough needs to shop Gaborik – something that will happen later rather than sooner, largely because so few teams could fit his $7.5-million (all currency U.S.) annual salary under the cap in mid-October - he would ideally like to place him with an Eastern Conference team.

Leipold Hopes To Sign Gaborik

from Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press,

Craig Leipold, who on Saturday begins his first full season as owner of the Wild, figures he has a playoff team.

“I think it’s very fair to say we’re a playoff team,” said Leipold, a former owner of the Nashville Predators. “We have the same players basically (as last season’s division champions). My expectations are high, and I think we’re going to go a long way. I like this team — there is high energy — and I think everyone on the team would be disappointed if we didn’t make the playoffs.”

As for the contract extension stalemate with all-star player Marian Gaborik, Leipold said he still hopes to sign the team’s top scorer, who can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.  Gaborik’s future in Minnesota is basically up to Gaborik, Leipold said.

Gaborik Contract Talks Go Nowhere

from Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune,

Marian Gaborik’s long-term future with the Wild never has been more uncertain.

General Manager Doug Risebrough told the Star Tribune on Friday that he does not expect to sign Gaborik, who is one season from unrestricted free agency, to a contract extension by the start of the season.

“Not making any headway,” said Risebrough, who last month said it would be prudent to sign Gaborik, the team’s all-time leading scorer, to an extension by next Saturday’s season opener. “I was trying to do something before the season. It’s not happening. ... It’s not going to happen by the start of the season.”

Asked if he’ll react by putting Gaborik on the trading block, Risebrough said, “That, I’ll have to determine.”

Looking At Gaborik

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

So chances are when all is said and done, with all those forces working on him, Gaborik will swallow his personal feelings and sign. But if he doesn’t, that’s when it really gets to be fun.

There’s no way Minny trades him to Vancouver. That almost certainly won’t happen given they’re in the same division. But if the team taking him in a deal can’t re-sign him, he may well consider coming here next year to meet up with old buddy Demitra. Gaborik probably wouldn’t mind playing with Marian Hossa either, but Hossa will also be a free agent next year and going for big money, so any team that wanted to pair them would have to be laying out a minimum of $18 million for the next five or six years.

Sides Are Far Apart In Gaborik Contract Negotiations

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,

Marian Gaborik was nowhere to be seen today.

Negotiations are clearly at a delicate juncture, very delicate. The two sides are far apart, although Risebrough said he plans to keep trying to get Gaborik inked to an extension. He again maintains he has had no trade talks and doesn’t plan any in the foreseeable future.

The irony here is the big risk in paying Gaborik Ovechkin money or Crosby money or Malkin money or Staal money or Lecavalier money is he’s so injury prone.

And here Gaborik is seeking to be paid like a top two or three player in the NHL while he’s out with a strained quad aggravated on the first day of training camp.

Dany Heatley for Marian Hossa trades don’t happen everyday in the NHL. Stars aligned a few years back and Atlanta and Ottawa was able to make a star for star trade.

That likely won’t happen here if Gaborik is dealt. Sure, the Wild could likely get a strong package of players/picks back, but you’re not going to get fair value back — at least for the short-term.

Gaborik will have his choice to play most anyplace he wants next season, and he knows that. To get him to forgo that opportunity, the Wild will have to pay him, and probably overpay him. Most teams can afford to pay Gaborik $9-10 million on a long-term deal next summer.

Gaborik A Tough Read

from John Shipley of the Pioneer Press,

Gaborik’s appetite for staying in Minnesota has been hard to read. Never what you would call emotional, he nonetheless appears indifferent, saying repeatedly he is “willing to stay.” Although the sides are negotiating, it’s frankly hard for the layman to understand the holdup.

The bottom line is the Wild have offered the right winger a long-term contract that would make him one of the highest-paid players in the NHL, with an average salary in the $8.5 million range. And the seven-year, $57.75 deal signed Thursday by Carolina’s Eric Staal — whose potential and career trajectory is similar — seems to fortify this as a reasonable offer.

So, if Gaborik were completely sold on the Wild, wouldn’t he have signed by now?

“That’s why this is scary,” Nanne said, “because it’s not a money issue.”

Gaborik Talks

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

“I have one year left on my contract. That’s all I’m thinking about. I’m going to leave everything out there, work hard and enjoy it. And I’m going to try the best I can to help the team win this year like I’ve done always.”

Told that sounds like he has decided to play out the final year of his contract and leave as a free agent, Gaborik said, “I’m not saying I’m leaving. I’m not saying I’m staying. I’m saying I have one year left on my contract. I’m leaving it up to the Wild and my agent to discuss it. But I want to be left out of it.

“I like it here. Of course, it’s been great times and experiences here. But I still have one more year on my contract. I want to be respected that I still have one year left, and I want to just focus on this year and just try to play the best I can. That’s how it is. I don’t want to think about my contract right now, and I don’t want to be put in a position where I have to talk about it.”

Evening Line

Risebrough says he has not had any trade conversations regarding Gaborik and has not gotten any calls from other GM’s (which I find hard to believe on the latter). He says he’s only concentrating on signing Gaborik before the Oct. 11 opener.

He wouldn’t answer hypotheticals when asked if he feels he’d have to trade Gaborik before the season if the winger makes it clear he won’t sign an extension.

Risebrough said he doesn’t plan to respond to any trade rumors during this process. “A lot of people on your side are fiction writers, and I’m not dealing with all the fiction writers. So the best thing is not to deal with any of [the rumors].”

Marian Gaborik’s agent, Ron Salcer (via the Pioneer Press):

“I can tell you that no decision (about free agency) has been made, and that he’s not even thinking about it. He’s focused on coming in and having a great season. If you start talking about next year, I think you’re getting ahead of yourself.

“We’re not going to deny anything the Wild wants to explore. We’re certainly willing to listen, but at this point it’s a hypothetical because I haven’t heard from them.”

Gaborik did meet with Wild management yesterday, but there was no discussion of an extension according to Salcer today.

“I can only say the Wild went to speak to him and were very respectful and shared information with him, about himself and the organization, and their vision.  I think it was a very intelligent move on their behalf to involve him, but we don’t have any set plans (to talk).”

Wild & Gaborik Talk

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Marian Gaborik doesn’t need to play in another city to be among the top scorers in the NHL.

That was the message Wild management delivered to Gaborik during a four-hour dinner meeting last week in Trencin, Slovakia—the first step in a journey the Wild hopes ends in a long-term extension to Gaborik’s contract before next season….

“We showed him a lot more info than any player has ever seen before—how we scout, how we measure players statistically,” Lynn said. “We also listened to his opinions.

“We just talked about the team, how we operate and where we are going, and then his performance and place in the future. So I would say it was a good meeting in that (a) it happened, and (b) Marian had good input, observations and understanding.”

Risebrough Plans To Meet With Gaborik

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Risebrough said he planned to call Gaborik this weekend to set up the meeting.

“I haven’t arranged it yet, but obviously I want to sit down with Marian while I’m over there,” Risebrough said Friday from his offseason home in Banff, Alberta. “I just want to make sure we’re on the same page.”

Gaborik will make $7.5 million in the final year of his contract this season. His average salary cap hit is $6.33 million.

The Wild plans to make an offer averaging in the $8.5 million cap-hit range. As of today, if Gaborik signed any contract averaging more than $7.8 million and less than $8.7 million, he would have the fourth-largest average contract in the NHL after superstars Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and right above Brad Richards and Vincent Lecavalier.

Marian Gaborik has what the Wild are calling a “hip deficiency” and will require further medical tests before the team determines the treatment.

The Wild issued a short statement Thursday saying the injury was “attributable to overuse,” after the Slovak Ice Federation announced the team wouldn’t permit Gaborik to play for Slovakia in the world championships because of the injury.

Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said he doesn’t know how serious the injury is.

“I don’t know either way, so I don’t want to comment on it,” he said.

This was a big series for Gabby. He’s a year from free agency. This postseason could have been the crucible in which he proved himself irreplaceable.

Instead, through five games, he’s disappeared as surely as Alex Rodriguez in October.

When a talented player becomes frustrated, the operative phrase in hockey is, “He’s squeezing the stick too tight.”

Not Wild for the Style

From Jim Souhan at the Star Tribune,

The NHL is about dumping the puck, taking the opponents’ stars out of the game, working a defensive system and waiting for a mistake that will create a scoring chance. If NFL coaches thought like NHL coaches, every team would punt on first down.

Take the Wild—please. They’re not just slumping—they’re boring. Because of the Wild’s style and the NHL’s emphasis on defensive systems, Marian Gaborik spends most of the game looking like a guy waiting for a bus.

Don’t repeat the popular argument that he needs to work harder, needs to be more of a two-way player, blah, blah, blah. Gaborik is a scorer. When he scores, the Wild almost always wins. Ergo: Gaborik should spend his ice time trying to score.

That would be good for the fans, the team, the league. Instead, we get to hear Jacques Lemaire chide him about defensive responsibility.

Gaborik Likes The East

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The Wild is going to have a dicey situation on their hands this summer if they go to Marian Gaborik and, say, offer him $7.5 million a year for five years in a new deal and he says ,“Hmmm, let me think about it.” No way does Minnesota want Gaborik in the last year of his contract and an unrestricted free agent in July 2009, like the Marian Hossa situation in Atlanta right now. If he drags his feet, maybe they investigate trading him, sooner rather than later.

Gaborik Healthy & Scoring

from CanWest via the National Post,

A healthy Gaborik has been somewhat of a treat for the Wild this season. He also took home the same honour earlier this season after he became the first player in more than a decade to score five goals in a game, Dec. 20 versus the New York Rangers.

In 2006-07, the 25-year-old native of Trencin, Slovakia, was limited to just 48 games, in large part due to a groin injury. When Gaborik was in the lineup, the Wild went 33-9-6; when he scored a goal, the team was 19-2-2.

Needless to say, as long as Gaborik, and fellow Slovak Pavol Demitra, stay healthy, the Wild will continue to compete for the Northwest title.

“I feel pretty good right now,” said Gaborik, who has 25 goals and 22 assists in 40 games this season.

Marian Gaborik posted the NHL’s first five-goal game in a decade, lifting the Minnesota Wild to a 6-3 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday night.

Gaborik’s outburst was the biggest in the league since Sergei Fedorov scored five for Detroit on Dec. 26, 1996, in an overtime game against Washington. Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux was the last to net five in regulation, pulling off the feat on March 26, 1996 versus St. Louis.

Nastiness Between Minnesota & Vancouver

From Michael Russo at the Star-Tribune,

If Mattias Ohlund is suspended, it would happen before tomorrow because Vancouver has a game.

It’ll be an interesting decision. After seeing the replay again more closely well after game, one wonders if league disciplinarian Colin Campbell will take into account Ohlund was reacting to Koivu’s attempted elbow.

I would think he would want to suspend him to perhaps keep Wednesdays rematch more civil and to also keep Ohlund safe.

Also, ill tell you what, after looking at Marian Gaborik’s elbow on Ryan Kesler again, he’s lucky he didn’t get a major. It was a leap at Kesler’s head.

Gaborik Apologizes to Your Fantasy Hockey Team

From Sportsnet.ca,

In an unprecedented move, Minnesota Wild forward Marian Gaborik has apologized to fantasy hockey owners for playing in a defensive system.

“When developing this team it is obvious that management paid no attention to fantasy owners, but instead selfishly decided that winning games was more important,” Gaborik said in a “prepared statement.”

The Slovak scorer has 13 points in 12 games this season, including a game-winning goal against the Calgary Flames. For his efforts the Wild are off to a 9-6-2 start, but fantasy owners are frustrated that Gaborik is not a Top 5 in every offensive category.

“I will continue to help you out when I can,” Gaborik explained. “But I am afraid management is obsessed with giving Minnesota fans a Stanley Cup.”

Gaborik & Demitra Out Again

via the Pioneer Press,

The Minnesota Wild will throw another depleted lineup on the ice tonight when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers. Marian Gaborik is out, Pavol Demitra is out and Wes Walz hasn’t come back.

Gaborik and Demitra have groin injuries; Walz hasn’t returned from an excused, and unexplained, absence and will miss his third game.

Gaborik played the past two games and played well, scoring five points, including a two-goal game in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Calgary. He sat out practice Sunday, but reporters were told he was simply given the day off.

Asked if something changed between Sunday and this morning, when Gaborik was pulled from practice, coach Jacques Lemaire said, “Something changed a bit.”

Gaborik & Backstrom Out

from the Pioneer Press,

Marian Gaborik injured his groin in practice Saturday and will miss Sunday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

General manager Doug Risebrough said he made the decision to sit Gaborik as a precaution. The right wing is officially listed as day to day, which is how his 34-day layoff last season started.

“I’m definitely not going to miss 40 games again,” Gaborik said….

That wasn’t the only bad news the Wild absorbed at practice Saturday. No. 1 goaltender Niklas Backstrom also left practice early because of a groin injury and will not play against Colorado

Can Gaborik Play a Full Season?

From Brian Murphy at the Pioneer Press,

Playing wire to wire is all that remains for Gaborik, 25, to prove he belongs in the same company with Heatley, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Marian Hossa, next-generation superstars with equal talent but more durability.

“I think that’s fair,” Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said. “The true picture of him persevering for 80 games and being productive in all situations, he’s just got to play the 80 games.”

Pierre McGuire, a former NHL coach and current TSN and NBC hockey analyst, said it is time for Gaborik to elevate his stature.

“When you’re talking about great players like Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, no matter what they did individually, over time, you have to prove you can do it for an entire season,” McGuire said. “Very few players can do what (Gaborik) does. But it’s longevity, durability. Do they have the determination? Are they willing to pay the price? It’s a huge recognition year for him.”
