Marian Hossa Has No Regrets

From TSN:

He turned down a multi-year offer from the Penguins and is reported to have rejected an $81 million, nine-year offer from the Edmonton Oilers for what he felt was his best chance to win a championship.

But then came the credit crunch, falling stock prices, rising unemployment and the very real chance that NHL clubs will have fewer dollars to throw around for the next batch of unrestricted free agents in July.

“I know the economy is not great now, but no regrets,” Hossa said Thursday on a conference call. “I came here to Detroit for one reason and that was to go all the way.

“We’ll see at the end of the year if it was the right step, but for now, it’s been a great experience - winning and playing for a great team. That’s what I was looking for.”

Pick One: Franzen Or Hossa

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Getting Franzen locked up will not be easy. The Red Wings went through a difficult negotiation process with him and his agent in the summer of 2006, when he was a third-line, checking forward with seemingly modest offensive potential. Franzen could cost the club between $4- and $5 million a year, and he surely would get more on the open market.

Re-signing Hossa would require a series of events. The Red Wings would have to deem Franzen’s asking price more than they want to pay. Hossa would have to give them a discount in the neighborhood of his current $7.45 million salary. And even then they would need to shed some salary to make room for Hossa, whom the club cannot begin contract talks with until after Jan. 1, since he’s on a one-year deal.

Whom do they choose? The decision probably will be made for them, once they learn each player’s asking price and determine who is a better value for the money.

Everyone Is Talking Hockey

from Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

We came to practice in Traverse City, and it’s a sellout [every day] for practice,” Hossa said. “It’s a small arena, but that shows me something. Obviously, in Atlanta there were good fans, but it’s not a traditional hockey market. You can tell the difference.”

It’s a difference, he said, that helps the Red Wings.

“You’re still playing the same game, [but] there’s definitely more atmosphere,” he said. “You get more fired up before the game. Everybody’s talking about it. You’re more under the microscope. Everybody’s talking about hockey.”

Evening Line

Instead of being disappointed he couldn’t be the agent behind a monumental deal,(Ritch) Winter left the Hossa negotiations with a different reaction.

“Admiration,” Winter said. “I just think Marian is a quality guy and a quality player. He’s a great player but might be a better man. The overwhelming response was positive; then there was a few scattered negative comments. That, I couldn’t understand.”

Nearly two weeks into free agency, if anything, the Wings have separated themselves further from the pack in the NHL. Even at the minor-league level, Nill admits times have never been this good for Detroit.

“Yeah, depth-wise (best we’ve ever been),” Nill said. “We have a lot of kids turning pro, the Emmertons, Mursaks, Pyett, Abdelkader, so we’re adding some good young kids. “Darren Helm showed he can play. “Up here (Detroit) we’re positioned well for next year, but we still have to go do it. It’s not going to be easy.”

Expect Hossa to Stay in Detroit

From Ken Campbell at The Hockey News,

In a hockey world rife with uncertainty, you can take this one to the bank: if Hossa turns out to be a good fit with the Red Wings, he will be in Detroit beyond next season and for many more to come.

There is absolutely no way Holland makes this deal exclusively with the 2008-09 season in mind. When Holland makes a deal of any magnitude, it must serve two purposes –that is make the Red Wings a better team in the short-term and a better team in the long-term. And there is no way Holland would have made the deal if he hadn’t already figured out there’s a good chance he’ll be able to get Hossa in the fold on a multi-year deal after next season.

Oilers Owner Having Free Agency Fun

Edmonton billionaire Daryl Katz spoke to the media today.

From the CP via TSN:

Minutes before the news conference, the Oilers latest hopes of landing a marquee forward were dashed when word surfaced that Marian Hossa had signed a one-year deal with Detroit.

But Katz simply smiled as he talked about the excitement of working this week with Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe as they bid for Hossa to give Edmonton some much-needed scoring punch.

“We’ve had a lot of fun,” he said. “The experience of pursuing Marian was great for us and it won’t be the last time.”

Hossa Wants The Cup

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

A day after three dozen or so of his peers went chasing after the most dollars they could possibly grab, Marian Hossa left tens of millions on the table Tuesday to sign a modest one-year, $7.4 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hossa was being greedy all right — but not in the conventional sense of the term. At the age of 29 and 10 years into his NHL career, Hossa was greedy for a Stanley Cup — and figured his best chance to win one was to go to the defending champions.

Hossa To Wings

via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins have lost free-agent right winger Marian Hossa to Detroit.

Team officials are believed to have been informed this morning that he will not re-sign.

Terms of Hossa’s contract were not immediately known, but the Red Wings are believed to have been offering a shorter-term contract than most other clubs.

The Hossa Talk In Edmonton

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

While general manager Kevin Lowe said “the numbers are a little bit inflated” when it comes to the reported $9 million a year deal over a rumoured nine-year term for 29-year-old Slovakian Marian Hossa, in the same breath he added: “Daryl said from the outset he’ll do whatever it takes and spend to the cap.”

The excitement comes from a community unaccustomed to being in the bidding for the most sought-after player in the Canada Day craziness. The fear comes from paying that kind of money to a player who is recognized as more of a follower than a leader, especially if the deal takes him to age 38. That’s the kind of insanity which history suggests more teams live to regret than not.

Devils May Pursue Hossa

from Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record,

There are some indications, however, that Lamoriello will try to make a big splash after the free agent market opens at noon on Tuesday in an attempt to propel his team back into the Eastern Conference’s elite.

The big fish would be right wing Marian Hossa....

Although pursuing such big-name players would seem to be out of character for Lamoriello, he suggests otherwise.

“All of that goes on behind the scenes and we don’t talk about it,” he said. “If we can do something that makes our team better, we’ll do that. You try to do that during the regular season, but you can’t always do it.”

Bruins Mum On Hossa

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Could the Bruins already be talking contract with superstar winger Marian Hossa?

Asked that question last night, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli offered little in the way of candor.

“Very good question,” he responded in a terse e-mail. “But can’t comment. Cheers.”

It’s highly possible that talks between Boston and Hossa have begun, because it has become a trend for clubs to be granted permission to speak with pending unrestricted free agents well ahead of the July 1 start of the NHL’s open marketplace.

Hossa to Test Free Agency

From Rob Rossi at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Marian Hossa has declined an offer to sign a long-term deal with the Penguins and will test free agency.

General manager Ray Shero said today after the NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place that Hossa, a star right wing acquired Feb. 26, will offer his services to other teams as an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Hossa A Priority In Pittsburgh

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

The Penguins have made signing right wing Marian Hossa to a long-term contract their No. 1 priority, according to several players, agents and team officials who spoke to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on the condition of anonymity.

All other offseason moves will be determined by the Penguins’ success or failure in this pursuit of Hossa, who scored 12 goals and recorded 26 points in 20 Stanley Cup playoff games skating alongside star center Sidney Crosby.

Hossa Looks For A Cup Contender

from Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Marian Hossa said for the first time Friday that he will entertain the idea of taking less money to play for a Stanley Cup contender, and believes the Penguins fit the bill as a great team....

“If I wanted to make a couple more dollars, I would probably just re-sign with Atlanta,” said Hossa, whose 12 goals and 26 points in the playoffs were exactly what the Penguins were seeking when they acquired him from the Thrashers on Feb. 26. “But I’m glad Pittsburgh got me here. This was a fun journey for myself, and a great experience. I hope I can stick with a great team like this. ...

Dream Job for Dupuis

From Larry Wigge at NHL.com,

But the trade to Pittsburgh came as a complete surprise.

“I was actually negotiating on a new contract with Atlanta and I’d been teasing ‘Hoss’ for more than a month before the deadline about how much he was going to like going back to Ottawa or playing in Montreal,” Dupuis explained. “In the end, he got the last laugh.

“At first, I joked with reporters that I was coming along to carry Hoss’s bags. But I got the dream-of-a-lifetime job of playing on a line with Sid and Hoss.”

Hossa Had No Idea He Would Be In Pittsburgh

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

Imagine if Hossa had ended up a Hab or a Sen? Perhaps those teams still would be playing instead of watching the Penguins attempt to sweep the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final tonight, a berth in the Stanley Cup final hanging in the balance.

And maybe, just maybe, it would have been the Pens who would be on the golf course now had Shero not stepped up to the plate and snatched Hossa.

It is an entirely different Marian Hossa you see playfully wandering around the dressing room these days. Gone is the omnipresent frown he sported during all those playoff shortcomings with the Senators and Thrashers, replaced by a huge grin worthy of a talented goal scorer who finally is becoming the money player during playoff time that so many thought he should be.

Rangers May Target Hossa

from Lynn Zinser of the New York Times,

Hossa will be a question mark whenever Pittsburgh’s season ends. The Penguins have other unrestricted free agents to consider re-signing, including defenseman Brooks Orpik and forward Ryan Malone. They also have to ensure they have future cap room to keep their young players. Malkin will be due for a new contract — presumably a long and large one — after next season.

If the Penguins do not have enough money to offer Hossa, who is making $7 million this season, the Rangers may be in the bidding for him. He is a strong two-way player and seems to be the kind of finisher the Rangers could use on a line with center Scott Gomez.

If the Rangers keep him from returning to Pittsburgh, they would take a chunk out of the lineup of a division rival, one that looks as if it will be formidable for years to come.

Hossa Was a Great Deadline Gift

From the CP,

“I was definitely pleased,” said Penguins superstar centre Sidney Crosby. “I’d watched him play a lot and from what I had heard he was a great person and a great fit for our team. The thing I kept hearing was how complete he was. I don’t think that’s something he gets a lot of recognition for. But you know you’re going to get a chance to play with an offensively gifted guy that’s really responsible defensively.

“That was a great deadline gift, so to speak, for our team and for me personally to be able to play with. I was very excited for that.”

So instead of joining the Senators for a second tour of duty, Hossa has been busy trying to knock them out of the playoffs.

Will Hossa Fit In

from the National Post,

Jason Botterill didn’t want to make a commitment to Marian Hossa just yet. In fact, during an interview last week, whenever the Pittsburgh Penguins director of hockey operations was asked about Hossa’s future with the team, he changed the subject.

“I just think it’s exciting that in the playoffs, we’ll get to watch a team with as much skill and speed as this one has,” Botterill said after being asked a second time about re-signing Hossa.

Botterill, a 32-year-old former Winnipeger who was part of the three world junior championship teams, had his playing career cut short by post-concussion syndrome. But the MBA he picked up at Michigan, where he also won an NCAA championship, helped him become the man in charge of the Penguins’ salary cap.

Hossa Expects to be Out Roughly a Week

From the CP via TSN,

But it’s not all bad news. Hossa considered himself fortunate to have avoided anything more disastrous than the mild sprain of his medial collateral ligament he did suffer.

With the Penguins in Ottawa to face the Senators on Saturday, Hossa, wearing a brace, was able to work out off the ice to rehab his knee while his teammates ran through a practice at Scotiabank Place on Friday afternoon.

‘’It’s bad news, but it’s also good news because I didn’t know what to expect and it’s a first-degree MCL and it should be better within hopefully a week,’’ he said.

Thrashers Price High For Hossa

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The whisper is Montreal GM Bob Gainey may have had a face-to-face meeting with Thrashers GM Don Waddell yesterday to see if they could close a deal.

While Ottawa GM Bryan Murray has also been hot on Waddell’s trail as well, it’s believed the Senators want rugged blueliner Garnet Exelby as part of any deal

That’s because the Thrashers are asking a lot.

Not only does Atlanta want winger Antoine Vermette or defenceman Andrej Meszaros as part of the deal, they want a prospect and the Senators’ No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft.

A Reported “Will Sign With”

Alanah posted this at Canucks and Beyond late last night and probably is not the last time we hear a “Will Sign With” today.

As always, you be the judge…

from RossMcKeon at Yahoo,

The Dallas Stars will acquire Tampa Bay Lightning center Brad Richards in a multi-player trade and Atlanta Thrashers right wing Marian Hossa is heading to the Montreal Canadiens before the NHL trade deadline, an executive within the league said Monday night.

added 7:22am, from the Star-Telegram,

The Stars continued discussions Monday about acquiring forward Brad Richards from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and NHL sources said Stars backup goaltender Mike Smith was one of the players Dallas was dangling.

“We’ve talked today, but nothing’s happening,” Stars co-general manager Les Jackson said on the eve of today’s 2 p.m. (CT) trade deadline.

Habs Still Looking For That Impact Player

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette via the National Post,

The Canadiens are considered one of the favourites but they may not be able to meet Atlanta’s price. With Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and Alex Tanguay off the market, the law of supply and demand kicks in and the price for Hossa is reportedly an established young NHL player, a prospect and a high draft choice.

That may be more than Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey is willing to offer and it’s more than Carbonneau wants to lose.

Cleary, currently sidelined with a broken jaw, was a teammate of Hossa during the NHL lockout in 2004-05, with Mora of the Swedish Elite League.

“Any team that gets this guy … he’s a real good person, a great team guy,” Cleary told CBCSports.ca reporter Doug Harrison on Monday. “He’s the most explosive player I’ve ever seen. Straight-away speed, no one touches him.”

While adding Hossa would allow Red Wings coach Mike Babcock to split up the dynamic duo of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, Cleary believes it’s wishful thinking.

Hossa Could Be Moved Today

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

In addition to Sundin not waiving his “no-trade” clause on Sunday morning Fletcher also sat down with Pavel Kubina, who said no. He sat down with Tomas Kaberle who also said no as did Darcy Tucker. The lone bright spot may be Bryan McCabe who said he would consider waiving his clause if it was with the right Eastern conference team....

Montreal and Ottawa appear to be the two front-runners for Marian Hossa’s services and there is every reason to believe that this is a trade that could go down as early as Monday as opposed to Tuesday.
