Brodeur’s Shoulder Issue Will Continue To Linger

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

I finally asked Brodeur after Saturday’s 3-1 loss in Dallas if he had some kind of injury in his shoulder that he was playing with prior to what happened to him on Oct. 13.

Brodeur confirmed that he did, but didn’t say exactly what the injury is other than, “It’s not something that surgery would help.”

It is something the 39-year-old goaltender has been playing with for several years, apparently, possibly from the wear and tear of an NHL-record 1,134 career regular season games (plus another 181 in the playoffs). But Brodeur was able to maintain it to the point where he could play with it with no problems – before landing awkwardly on the shoulder after making that diving save on Kings defenseman Alec Martinez.

And, after what the doctors told him following the Oct. 18 MRI and the way he’s felt in practices since then, Brodeur is confident that he’ll get his shoulder back to the way it was before Oct. 13.

Brodeur Not Happy With All The Suspensions

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur says the new NHL warden is giving hockey a black eye with his spate of head-shot suspensions.

“Not everybody is following preseason, and when it’s over, the only thing people are going to hear about is, ‘Twelve suspensions for 37 games or whatever it turns out,’ ” Brodeur told The Post yesterday. “That’s not good for the game. No other sport does anything like that to itself.”

New NHL punishment VP Brendan Shanahan is setting suspension records for head hits.

“It could be chaotic,” Brodeur said. “Hopefully this is just an issue because the guys are adjusting. He’s setting a precedent for future calls.”

Brodeur recalls other crackdowns that fizzled.

What Will Brodeur Do?

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,

Brodeur is entering the final season of his contract ($5.2 million). He has twice before passed up unrestricted free agency to stay with New Jersey, at a discount. But those Devils were perennial contenders. This is now, and no one knows whether these Devils are last season’s’ 22-2-3 juggernaut or the playoff-missers.

“These two years, this year and last year, it’s different. A lot of young guys and different responsibilities,” Brodeur said. “For me, it’s a lot different.

“I want to be OK with it. Do I want to continue playing with young players? And what kind of team are we going to have? There are a lot of things. I’m looking forward to that challenge. It will be fun, a new coach and we’ll see how it’s going to go.”

Brodeur made it clear he wants to be a career-long Devil, but also made clear that departure next summer is possible. Or a lockout might push him toward retirement.

“I don’t want to put any barriers on my decision,” he said. “I would love to stay forever in New Jersey. That’s my goal.

“Then again, if they’re going a different route, and I feel I want to play, I can’t close these doors. I don’t want to go anywhere, that’s the bottom line.

A Second Look at Goalies

image

In my previous preview of the top goalies, I had mentioned Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist, Pekka Rinne, and Ryan Miller as my top five options. Upon reflection and much debate, I discovered many other names that could be considered top 5 (or at least top 10). Many goalies are drafted in the early rounds of fantasy drafts, since top-notch starting goalies can be impossible to find on the waiver wire once the season starts. To help you find the right goalie(s), I have provided ten more goaltending options that could legitimately fall into the category of the NHL’s better starting goalies. And I promise that there will be no commercials while you read this.

Niedermayer Moves Closer To Having Number Retired

image

It looks like Devils fans will be seeing a new number hanging from the rafters in the very near future. The latest number to have some buzz surrounding it goes to Scott Niedermayer, and his #27 sweater. This would also keep the line of retired numbers to only defenseman. Though not 100% confirmed there are reports that the Devils will retire Niedermayer’s number this December during a home game against Dallas, but that date and opponent could easily change.

The Case for Number One in Goal

image

Determining a first overall pick in this year’s fantasy hockey drafts is anything but easy, but we probably know this much: the first overall pick won’t be a goalie. Yet a goalie is an important investment to fantasy hockey teams, since only two goalies can be responsible for four out of a team’s ten stat categories in many fantasy hockey leagues. The need for solid goaltending explains why many starting goalies can fly off the board early in fantasy hockey drafts.

Brodeur Expected To Have Better Season

image

From John Kreiser of the National Hockey League,

“The 39-year-old future member of the Hall of Fame enters 2011-12 as the NHL’s all-time leader in wins and shutouts—but he’s also coming off the first losing season in his 17-year career. Brodeur’s save percentage dropped to .903, his worst since 1995, and he missed significant time with an injury for the second time in three years. He did look sharper in the second half but wants to prove he’s still an elite goaltender for a full season.”

Is Brodeur Running Out Of Time?

image

Martin Brodeur has done it all. From Stanley Cups to breaking records, his career with the New Jersey Devils has been nothing but spectacular. Something is coming up on Brodeur now that he has no control over, and which may very likely put his career to an end in the next couple seasons – age.

The 39-year-old goaltender has spent 18 seasons in the NHL, all with the Devils. He has won three Stanley Cups with the Devils in 95’, 00’and 03’. His list of awards is long enough that I will spare my readers the drawn out list. Let’s just say it is highlighted by four Vezina Trophies. He has also broken so many records both in the NHL and for the Devils franchise that I would hate to be the one having to rewrite the history books. Not to mention all the double-stacked pad saves, the on-the-back rollover saves and the left-handed glove puck snares from out of nowhere. Let’s not forget he has the ability to send Doc Emrick into a voice elevating shout of approval, and can make Chico Resch melt like butter with an incredible save. He has literally done it all.

Brodeur On Sharing The Goaltending Spot In New Jersey

from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

The unthinkable has taken place with the Devils. Martin Brodeur may share the goaltending duties with Johan Hedberg for the remainder of this season.

“I don’t deserve to be in there when you don’t win,” Brodeur said today after staying on the ice long after practice to work on his mechanics.

Does Brodeur feel he’s reached that point in his career where he will share the goaltending?

“I think in a season like this probably. In a different season, maybe not,” Brodeur said. “We’ll see how it goes.

“I like to play a lot and that will never change. But it’s got to be fun for me to play hockey. Not winning is not fun. So if we get back to winning I’ll play more. I don’t deserve to be in there when you don’t win. That’s the bottom line. I’ve been winning all my career and now it’s been a little tougher. So it’s normal. If this works, good. It helps out the team.”

Brodeur Wants To Remain A Devil

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

It’s all been pure speculation and guessing from the outside so far, but, for the first time in his 20-plus years in the Devils’ organization the speculation and guessing has brought up goaltender Martin Brodeur’s name.

Brodeur made it clear today that he has no interest in jumping ship as the Devils head toward the most disappointing season in team history.

“I want to stay,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to play on some great teams here. I’‘m not going to quit now. It might be the right way to think about it, but at the end of the day it could be out of my hands. But, personally, I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere this season or next season. I’d love to finish my career here.”

Report- Brodeur Out At Least Ten Days

via Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

There will be no late appearance in St. Louis from Devils goalie Martin Brodeur.

Brodeur has informed people close to him that he had an MRI and has been told to rest his bruised right elbow for at least 10 days.

That means he won’t be back until early December and will likely miss at least five games. The Devils play the Montreal Canadiens at home on Dec. 2, which is surely a game Brodeur will not want to miss.

Brodeur Concerned About His Elbow

via Tom Gulitti tweets, Brodeur:

Brodeur: “I’m concerned. I know the percentage is it’s nothing really, really bad. I think it’s just the time (to heal)...

Brodeur: “Maybe I’m going to have to sit a little longer to heal it properly and come back when there’s nothing, not try to go through it.”

Just A Bruise For Brodeur

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

The last time the Devils said goaltender Martin Brodeur had a bruised elbow, he ended up missing 50 game with what turned out to be a torn biceps tendon.

That was in Brodeur’s left arm. Tonight, Brodeur suffered what the team is calling a bruised right elbow on a second period shot from Chicago’s Patrick Kane in the Devils’ 5-3 win tonight at United Center.

Brodeur said this injury is nothing like the one in his left arm that he suffered on Nov. 1, 2008 against Atlanta at Prudential Center. In fact, he said he’s “pretty sure” he’ll be able to play Friday night against the Rangers at Prudential Center.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/22/10

It’s early, sure, but let’s raise a glass to my three stars of yesterday’s NHL action:

***Cheers to New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur, who blanked Montreal as his Devil teammates notched a goal in each of the game’s three periods en route to a 3-0 win. Brodeur extended his all-time record with the 112th shutout of his brilliant career. Zach Parise, Jason Arnott and Matt Taormina scored for New Jersey.

**Cheers to Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who scored a pair of goals and assisted on teammate Kris Letang’s overtime winner to lift the Pens over the Nashville Predators 4-3. “Sid the Kid” (hard to believe he’s still just 23, no?) appears to be heating up, 6-5-11 in Pittsburgh’s eight games this season but 5-3-8 in his last three – and that’s bad news for Atlantic Division rivals and opponents league wide.

Ryan Miller’s Place In The 2010-11 Vezina Discussion

While it certainly can’t be said with a straight face that Ryan Miller doesn’t get enough respect, there are some pundits out there who have declared, almost as a foregone conclusion, that the 30-year old Sabres franchise netminder will still be solid but won’t be able to duplicate his Vezina-worthy magic of 2009-10.

Whether because of changes in the Sabres defensive corps, having played too many games, or simply from the difficulty of maintaining such a high level of play in an ultra-competitive league where the difference in the talent level of goaltenders has shrunk significantly, discussions by many about Miller’s prospects for the upcoming season are accompanied by buzzwords and catch phrases like “dropoff” and “coming back down to earth”.

Post-Kovalchuk Thrashers Deep on ‘D’, Look to New Faces and Young Guns for Offense

For the Atlanta Thrashers, a team with just one playoff appearance in ten National Hockey League seasons (and not a single post-season victory to their credit), the time for a fresh start was clearly at hand.

By first turning a negative into a positive in moving on from superstar sniper Ilya Kovalchuk late last season and then raiding the cabinet of the cap-crunched Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta begins their new era, under both a new general manager and head coach in Rick Dudley and Craig Ramsay, with a wealth of promising youth and several veterans with recent championship experience.

They may no longer boast an individual showstopper but that formula wasn’t producing a consistent winner in Blueland anyway (and that alone rarely does as much anywhere). The post-Kovalchuk Thrashers appear to be headed for greener pastures, though there will be that little issue of replacing his 45+ goals, of course.

Not An Easy Time For Kovalchuk

from Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger,

Martin Brodeur has never been an unrestricted free agent, but the Devils goalie thinks he knows what Ilya Kovalchuk is going through.

Like Devils management and most fans, he is anxious to hear the winger’s decision about where he will play next season.

“I’m sure Kovy is not feeling good about what is going on right now,” Brodeur said today after another day without a decision from Kovalchuk. “I don’t know for sure, but it can’t be something that is comfortable, because if something is comfortable, you get it done right away.

“When you’re torn between two things or three things, it cannot be something that is fun. The pay day is going to be fun, but regardless of what is coming, you have to think about all of this.

Ovechkin And Brodeur Have Points To Prove

from Phil Coffey of NHL.com,

Keep an eye on two NHL players in the coming weeks, because I have a feeling that both Alex Ovechkin and Martin Brodeur are coming out of Vancouver with a burr under their respective saddles.

Ovechkin had the 1,000-yard stare as Team Canada ended Russia’s medal hopes in a brutal 7-3 shellacking that saw the Canadians simply dismantle a Russian squad many thought would at least be competitive with Canada.

That didn’t come close to happening and Ovechkin was completely shut down by the Canadians, going minus-2 with just three shots and a very bad feeling about the experience.

Brodeur Ties Sawchuk’s Shutout Mark

from Brian Hunter of NHL.com,

It was the 103rd shutout of Brodeur’s illustrious career, tying him with Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk, who accomplished the mark in 971 career games for the Red Wings, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Kings and Rangers.

“I think with the last few games, we had a couple going into the third with no goals,” said Brodeur, who had been waiting to tie the record since his last shutout on Oct. 17 against Carolina.

“When it was nine minutes left I was like, well let’s try to beat this, and then move on to five minutes and really think about it in the last five minutes. The guys played really well in front of me and made a big difference in why we were able to get a shutout, but especially a big win.”

Brodeur vs. Luongo Tonight

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

Oh, sure, it’s just a game, and nothing that happens Wednesday night when Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo square off in New Jersey will have much bearing on the Olympic jobs handed out in February.

But just so everyone knows, Team Canada GM Steve Yzerman will indeed be watching the Canucks-Devils game.

“I’m going to TiVo it and watch it later,” Yzerman told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “I’m going to be at another game [Tampa at Boston], but when I saw this game [Canucks-Devils] on the schedule, I wanted to make sure I watched it.”

So there ... it’s not just the media making a big deal out of it, OK?

“To be honest with you, it’s exciting to play against Marty, period,” Luongo told us Tuesday. “Just because we’re from the same hometown and he’s one of the greatest of all time. That’s really the only reason for me. I don’t think one game is going to decide anything with regards to the Olympics.”

Get Rid Of The Trapezoid?

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur is among those hoping the NHL general managers decide at their meetings over the next two days to remove the trapezoid behind the nets.

The trapezoid was implemented in the NHL following the 2004-05 lockout to limit the goaltenders from handling the puck in the corners behind the net. It begins at the goal line with angled lines six feet from each goal post and widens to 28 feet at the end boards.

Former Flyers general manager Bobby Clarke was one of the leaders in getting the trapezoid implemented. It was commonly known as the “Martin Brodeur rule” because it was clearly aimed at the Devils netiminder, who was one of the best at getting behind the net to handle the puck.

But, now general managers are looking for ways to cut down on the number of injuries on defensemen who are being hit hard by forechecking fowards.

Brodeur Lacking Confidence

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils coach Jacques Lemaire talked a lot about confidence after today’s optional practice: guaging it after an 0-2 start, trying to boost it in certain players and how he believes it will improve on the team’s upcoming three-game road trip that begins Thursday night at Tampa Bay.

So, I asked Lemaire how goaltender Martin Brodeur’s confidence is right now after losing the first two games and giving up some questionable goals.

“Not at its best, that’s for sure,” Lemaire replied. “But, on the other hand, he’s not destroyed either. His confidence is not destroyed. I think he needs a little support right now, which we’ll try to give it to him, and he’ll be fine.”

Who Starts In Goal For Canada?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal via Canada.com,

“This is it for me,” said Brodeur, swatting away any suggestion that he might still be in the goaltending picture during the 2014 Olympics in Russia.

The grand old man of Canadian goaltending would be 41 in 2014 and he knows he can’t stop pucks forever.

As it is, he might not stop them every night at the 2010 Olympics. There is a reasonable possibility Vancouver Canucks’ Roberto Luongo, seven years younger and cognizant he’ll be playing in his home rink, might actually beat him out as the starter.

Brodeur Talks About The Next Devils Coach

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

“I’m at a point where the decision, I know will be the right one,” Brodeur said. “Like I’ve said in the past, I have a lot of faith in Lou and the hockey people that we have to bring in the right guy under the right circumstances. I thought we did some great things last year with some of the young players playing the way they played and my concern is to make sure that we don’t stop there. We need these kids to continue to grow.

“It doesn’t matter who the coach is to me. It won’t change much and for the older players it won’t change much. But it’s for the kids, the future prospects and how they need to learn. Like I said, I’m anxious becuase that’s what we do. I play hockey and it would be nice to know who is going to be the head of our team.”

Brodeur said the style Sutter implemented helped the Devils, particularly the young players, progress as a team..

“Brent brought a system that helped these guys to be able to go in and gain more and be more active on the offensive side of the puck,” Brodeur said .“It’s something that we gained confiedence in doing that and, for us as a team, by doing that we showed ourselves that we’re capable fo playing a certain way to compete with the top teams and we’ve just got to continue that way.”

We stayed in Warsaw for a day and a half, not that long. I didn’t expect Poland to be a special stop for us. We went to Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic. Brodeur Needs To Work On His Game

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

There was plenty of blame to go around in the Devils’ 4-1 loss to the last-place Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Prudential Center….

When I asked Sutter after tonight’s game if he was concerned about the way Brodeur has played lately, he replied, “Just to get back to the question I get asked about whether I think about rotating goalies: Now you can see why I’m not thinking about doing it.

“There’s still things that Marty needs to work on to get himself ready (for the playoffs).”

In other words, Brodeur will start the team’s final two regular season games.

Brodeur didn’t excuse himself from blame.

“Not good enough to win a hockey game,” Brodeur said in evaluating his own play. “That’s the bottom line. When you face a goalie is playing so well and the way he played today, you just want to make sure you keep your team in the game and definitely giving them a three-goal lead, regardless of how it happens, it’s something you have to try to avoid.”

A Recap Of Brodeur’s Night

Update 1:55pm ET: From Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, a look at Brodeur’s history:

Brodeur’s beginnings were not quite as inauspicious, but he certainly wasn’t thought of as a future superstar in the league. In fact, Brodeur was the decidedly second consensus pick in that draft to Trevor Kidd, who went to the Calgary Flames 11th overall.

At that time, our annual Draft Preview edition profiled the top 60 prospects, but only the top 21 – which consisted of the first round of the draft back then – were ranked in order. The other 39 were ranked in alphabetical order and Brodeur, who was projected to be a second-round pick, was among that group.

Brodeur Wins

from Phil Coffey of NHL.com,

Martin Brodeur stands alone.

The New Jersey Devils’ standout goalie earned his 552nd victory, the most wins ever by an NHL goalie, Tuesday night at Prudential Center, besting the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 before a raucous crowd that chanted “Marty, Marty” and “Marty’s better” throughout the game.

After the game, Brodeur, with a little help from his teammates, cut the net away from the posts.  Probably will make a very nice keepsake.

Preparing For Brodeur

from NHL.com,

It’s a beautiful spring day here in Newark. Temperatures are likely in the high 50s and there was no need for anything stronger than a sport coat on the three-block walk to Scully’s for lunch. On the way back, right around 3 p.m., we saw close to 100 fans waiting outside the box office, hoping to snatch up the $10 day-of-game tickets put on sale before every home game.

It was cool to see that level of excitement and passion and just further stoked the fires for what hopefully will be a historic night.

more and NHL.com will be blogging for the rest of the night at the same link, just in case you want to check in throughout the evening.

Boston Goalies Talk Broduer

from Matt Kalman of The Bruins Blog,

To Boston Bruin goaltender Manny Fernandez, New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur’s breaking of Patrick Roy’s all-time wins record — which could occur Tuesday night against Chicago or any time over the next week or so now that Brodeur tied the record Saturday — is about more than just replacing the name of one great goaltender with another on the top of a list.

Fernandez thinks it’ll help Brodeur get his full due.

“He seemed to be a little bit in (Roy’s) shadow. And now he’s come around, he’s actually beating some of his records, people are starting to notice him a little more and talk about him,” Fernandez recently told TheBruinsBlog.net. “He’s a great goalie. He was born to play that sport; you can see that. He’s a guy that doesn’t get overstressed. He could be playing in a Game 7 and still look like it’s practice. That’s what you need.”

Brodeur One Win Away From All-Time Wins Record

from the CP via TSN,

Martin Brodeur dominated Patrick Roy’s former team to draw even with the Hall of Fame netminder atop the career wins list.

Brodeur stopped 21 shots to tie Roy with his 551st career regular-season victory as the New Jersey Devils beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 on Saturday night.

Facing the team he idolized as a child, Brodeur was nearly perfect, allowing only Tomas Plekanec’s goal at 12:29 of the first period.

With Roy in attendance, Brodeur held Montreal scoreless the rest of the way for his seventh win in eight games since returning from a serious elbow injury. Brodeur was given a standing ovation by the Montreal fans at the end of the game.

The four-time Vezina Trophy winner will have a chance to break the record Tuesday when the Devils entertain the Chicago Blackhawks.

added 10:56pm, Shauna Denis of MontrealCanadiens.com has some post-game quotes from some of the Devils.

added 11:04pm, Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice has quotes from the victorious Brodeur.

Following Brodeur

Dan Rosen of NHL.com has been ‘shadowing’ Martin Brodeur the last few days….

Martin Brodeur met the bi-lingual media this morning. Click here for a portion of the transcript.

One of the funniest things of the morning happened just as Brodeur was arriving at the rink. As he walked past the press conference room he saw his father, Denis Sr., doing a radio interview. I was standing in front of the door to the press conference room chatting with Denis Jr. As Martin walked past he said in French (Denis Jr. translated it to me), “Hey dad, you playing tonight?” Denis Sr. didn’t hear him, but Denis Jr. did and he started laughing.

Martin then turned back around and said, “I don’t know, he doesn’t look too focused.”

Records Within Reach

from Dave Tomasino of the NY Post,

The Devils are knocking on the door of history. That door could open tonight versus the Coyotes, when the Devils seek to win their ninth straight home game for the first time in club history.

Should they do so with Martin Brodeur in goal, the goalie will pull to within one victory of Patrick Roy’s all-time record of 551 and have a chance to tie the mark Saturday in Montreal, which is Brodeur’s hometown and the city in which Roy built his legacy.

Brodeur also is closing in on Terry Sawchuk’s record of 103 career shutouts. Brodeur has 100, including two in six starts since returning from elbow surgery. The Devils have won five of those starts.

The Best Of The Best

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,

It’s only a slight exaggeration that Martin Brodeur’s comeback has been his career in a nutshell.

Hockey is watching, and everyone else around here should be, too. It’s just not that often we have the “greatest ever” (even if only arguably) on display, night after night, right where we live.

Babe Ruth? Not quite that old. Julius Erving? Hmm, maybe not. Wayne Gretzky? Not his heyday. Niatross? OK, horses don’t count.

It’s 15 seasons now, which means it mostly is behind us, and it’s time to appreciate it while he’s still at the top of his powers.

Conference Call Transcript: Martin Brodeur

After missing 50 games due to injury, Marty returned to the Devils’ lineup this past week recording three wins, including two shutouts to garner First Star of the Week honors. The three wins give him 547 for his 16-year NHL career, four behind all-time leader Patrick Roy who retired with 551.

Here is a transcript of his Q&A session with the media today, courtesy of the NHL.

        Q. Is it possible that this injury, the silver lining could be that you’ll be fresher down the stretch and in the playoffs as you’ve ever been in your career?

MARTIN BRODEUR: Well, I hope so. I think you have to take every positive you can from an injury. Sometimes it’s hard to have them. But definitely not playing as many games, you know, we’ll see what that translates into, what kind of success in the playoffs.

Brodeur’s Dream Comes True

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Brodeur admitted this shutout was a little different, though.

“It’s special,” he said. “I had a couple of good shutouts in my career in different areas and different games, but this one was pretty special to come back after that long. I didn’t get tested much. I had 24 shots, but there were still a couple of shots (that were tough) and they hit a post. I got a little lucky. It was kind of nice.”

When asked when he first started thinking about a shutout, he replied, “Last night, when I was dreaming.”
