With so many historic goaltending records about to fall this season, it seems appropriate to to consider Martin Brodeur’s brilliance.
Up close and in person, Brodeur looks like you or me—or maybe your uncle who works as, let’s say, a pipefitter. But after spending time during the offseason with a personal trainer, the burly Brodeur now appears to be more streamlined.

The Devils have a backup goalie. His name is Kevin Weekes. This year, coach Brent Sutter should use him.
This isn’t a suggestion. It’s a mandate. If the Devils want all-world goalie Martin Brodeur to take them deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs, they can no longer write his name in the line-up every day for weeks and even months at a time.

Avery Fronts Brodeur

While the Rangers were on a 5 on 3 advantage, Avery faced Brodeur and tried a new ‘screening’ method by facing Avery and following his every move. Also was waving his stick in his face.
Avery scored on the next rush, with the Rangers taking a 2-1 lead late in the 2nd period.

Brodeur and Devils coach Brent Sutter said the refs had told them that future shenanigans from Avery would be penalized, even though they knew of no specific rule being violated.
“Nobody should have to play hockey with a stick an inch from your face,” Brodeur said. “But it wasn’t a bad play. While he was doing it, I couldn’t see anything. The two misses were just luck, I couldn’t see a thing.”

Lemaire was asked Wednesday where Brodeur ranked among goaltenders he had seen in his time in the league as a player and coach.
No. 1, Lemaire said.
‘’I’m thinking, you know,’’ Lemaire said. ‘’(Ken) Dryden, he was really good for a short time. And I know, at a time, he couldn’t get ready to play and that’s why he stopped. This guy (Brodeur), he’s been doing it for a long time, and he’ll do it ‘till he’s 40. So he’s got to be the one.’’
Better, even, than Patrick Roy? ‘’Patrick was good at a time,’’ Lemaire said. “You’re talking about (Wayne) Gretzky, (Mario) Lemieux, Bobby Orr. Who is the best player? Every opinion is good.’’
