ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have assigned center Michael Nylander to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a conditioning stint, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

What Is Going On With Michael Nylander?

He just doesn’t fit in D.C. in Bruce Boudreau’s system, and he’s terribly expensive at a transitional time in his career (nearing the end). Initially his production slipped precipitously as he struggled to try and fit in Gabby’s get-up-and-go gallop, but more recently he’s been unable even to crack the lineup. And so he’s doubly or triply tough to move—he has a no movement clause in his contract as a bit of an exclamation point in this impasse.

If Michael Nylander held out any hope of contributing to the Caps this season, Capitals’ management threw seriously cold water on it with the acquisition of Brendan Morrison over the summer, and that just days after suggesting that Brooks Laich would be seriously auditioned at center on the Capitals’ second line. Then Bruce Boudreau quashed the notion of Nyls contributing altogether this preseason. Figuratively and literally Michael Nylander has been divorced from the competitive portion of training camp, failing to dress for a single preseason game. I can’t ever recall such isolation of an individual player in a Capitals’ preseason before.

Q: Bruce Boudreau and George McPhee both said [yesterday] that you are exploring your options in Europe. What’s the situation?

A: “I come here and I want to play in the NHL and I’m looking forward to the season. I feel unbelievable good. I’m in good shape. I’m just looking forward to the season.”

Q: So you don’t have an agent trying to find something for you in Europe?

A: “I’m coming here with the intention of playing for the Capitals. I have two years left on the deal.”

Caps Trying To Move Nylander To Europe

Michael Nylander has arrived, according to Coach Bruce Boudreau. But how long the veteran will remain in Washington is unclear. Boudreau acknowledged that Nylander and the Caps are actively seeking a deal to send the 36-year-old center to Europe.

“I hope it doesn’t become a distraction,” Boudreau said.

I didn’t speak to Boudreau directly—he’s running his Golden Horseshoe hockey school in St. Catherines, Ont., this week—but he issued a brief statement through a team spokesman.

“I do not have any recollection of saying that to Michael,” Boudreau said. “That is not my style, and not something I would say.”

Capitals Talk

Before I went to watch Alex Ovechkin play poker this afternoon (more on that later) I caught up with GM George McPhee and asked him about Michael Nylander’s status with the Caps for next season.

McPhee stopped short of dismissing recent reports that the veteran center is attempting to negotiate a deal to join a KHL team, but he did say that he believes it’s unlikely Nylander will end up in Russia next season.

“If he wants to go he can, if it’s a mutual arrangement,” McPhee said of Nylander, who fell out of favor with Coach Bruce Boudreau last season and hardly played in the postseason. “There’s nothing to stop a player if he’s agreeable and the club is agreeable. What’s going to stop him? If he agrees and they agree, we assign him” to the KHL....

Asked if he expects Nylander to play in Russia, McPhee said: “Probably not.”

I also asked McPhee about a few other issues facing the Caps, namely the status of pending UFAs Sergei Fedorov, Donald Brashear and the assistant coaching vacancy. Here’s what he told me:

No To Nylander

Sources familiar with the negotiations say the Blackhawks turned down a deal last week that would have had ex-Bruin Michael Nylander, now with the Capitals, wearing the Indian Head by this weekend. Someone in that Hawks’ lineup would have to be going back to D.C. to even out some of the $8.5 million Nylander is due over the two seasons after this one. The likeliest candidates: Dustin Byfuglien (two more years at $3 million per) or Brent Sopel (two more years at $2.5 million per).

If the Bruins keep the juices flowing, and the Panthers continue to struggle, UFA-to-be Jay Bouwmeester, 25, would be a dream addition to the Boston back line.

His shoulder feels strong. His timing is coming back as evidenced by Nylander, 36, finishing as the team’s second leading scorer in the preseason with seven points (two goals, five assists).

“He’s playing a lot younger and a lot more determined” Boudreau said. “At the end of last year when we were playing pretty good, he was almost an afterthought in people’s minds. Not in my mind, but in other people’s minds. . . . He’s out to prove he’s an elite player again.”

Blackhawks Targeting Nylander

The Blackhawks are trying to clear salary cap space by getting rid of Khabibulin and insiders say the player they’re targeting now is Washington Capitals center Michael Nylander, who has three years left on his contract with a salary cap hit of $4.875 million.

Sources say the Blackhawks have already made two serious offers to the Capitals for Nylander and believe he would be a good candidate to replace Robert Lang and play with oft-injured Martin Havlat.

I also asked Nylander about all of the trade rumors (Vancouver, New York, New Jersey, etc.) that surfaced over the summer. He acknowledged that he heard them, but he said he’s not worried. And for good reason:

“I have a no move clause in my contract,” he said. “So it’s really up to me if I want to move. I want to stay here and I’m looking forward to the season. There’s lots of rumors about lots of players all the time.”

I’ve received a lot of emails from readers since Michael Nylander put his Potomac home on the market and that news hit the blog circuit. I’m hearing that it’s nothing more than Nylander wanting to purchase another home (yes, in the Washington area). I’m not saying that he won’t be asked to waive his NTC and get traded, all I’m saying is that there’s no connection between him selling his home and his current status with the team.

Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee says he was caught in the middle when free-agent centre Michael Nylander called him last July to say he wanted to play for his club.

Nylander’s wife had told her husband there was absolutely no way she was going to move to Edmonton so he could play for the Oilers. Having loved her previous time in Washington, she reportedly ordered her husband to get on the blower to the Caps and was standing right beside her man as he called.

Lack Of Sleep Was The Final Straw

In the end, the veteran center said, the combination of pain, diminished productivity and inability to sleep told him it was time to undergo season-ending surgery this week.

“I was playing with one hand,” Nylander said, making his first public comments about the injury during Saturday’s 5-3 victory over the Florida Panthers. “I had to change my game. I was playing at 70 percent, 80 percent most nights and it just got worse and worse. It was 50 percent, maybe, sometimes.”

The 35-year-old Swede, the Capitals’ top free agent signing during the offseason, said he’ll miss five or six months while rehabilitating, but added that he expects to make a full recovery.
