From TSN:
According to the Calgary Herald, Swedish club Vasteras was under the assumption that Backlund would rejoin them after the World Junior Hockey Championship.
‘’Mikael Backlund has not been given permission to play for another club,’’ Vasteras official Anders Eklund told the Swedish media. ‘’There is nothing in his agreement with us that allows him to play for a club in North America and we don’t think it’s right that he did this without communicating with us.
‘’We are very disappointed in Backlund’s conduct in this case and do not think he acted honestly.’
Backlund suited up for the Calgary Flames last week. Read on.
Update 3:05pm ET: Here’s the original report in the Calgary Herald.

Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the recall of forward Mikael Backlund.
Backlund is coming off a silver medal at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships as a member of team Sweden, and was named as one of Sweden’s Top Three players in the Tournament. Backlund finished tied for 2nd on the team with seven points (5+2), and tied for 7th overall in tournament scoring with five goals in six games. This is Backlund’s second straight silver medal after finishing second at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in the Czech Republic.

Flames Hope 1st Round Pick Can Make An Impact

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Calgary Herald,
Nineteen-year-old Mikael Backlund will skate with the draftees and free agents this week. But the hope is the young Swede will knock everyone’s socks off and jump from prospect to producer with the big club.
The greening of Backlund could well decide whether Calgary moves forward or falls back this coming season....
Many scouts feel he’s very close to ready.
And now you can see why GM Darryl Sutter went so far from his comfort level in selecting a European player in the first round of the 2007 draft.
Put simply, this organization desperately needs a skilled player on an entry-level contract to emerge now—not in 12 months or two years.
The core of veterans assembled in Calgary has maybe another season or so left at its peak.
At about $57.6 million in guaranteed money, the Flames have reached the salary cap.
