Commodore Not A Babcock Fan

from Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch,

“Mike Babcock was without a doubt an obstacle in my career,” said Commodore of the coach who traded him from Anaheim to Calgary in 2003.

“I wanted to prove him wrong, I’m not going to lie. I used him as big-time motivation. I thought he put his best foot forward to bury me.”

Commodore’s perceived injustice—the kind that can be found in almost every NHL locker room—adds intrigue to the Blue Jackets-Red Wings rivalry. The outspoken defenseman now gets to face his former coach six times a season.

In one breath, Commodore says “it’s water under the bridge,” and in the next concedes, “I still get fired up talking about it."…

“The only thing I ever questioned about Mike was his conditioning,” Babcock said. “In my mind, Mike always has been a quality guy. When he came up, I didn’t think he was in condition. That’s it.”

Commodore Defends His Contract

from Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch,

In Columbus, he hopes to finally live up to his title as a stay-at-home defenseman. The contract Commodore signed—$18.75 million over five seasons—would seem to indicate as much. The deal’s first two years include a no-trade clause.

“I’m looking forward to staying in one place for a while,” Commodore said. “That would be nice. I’d like to take a break from moving and establish some roots if I could."…

Some critics, however, say the Jackets overpaid for a defenseman with 14 career goals and 49 assists in seven seasons spanning 296 games. The Hockey News labeled it the fourth-worst signing of the summer.

“I’ll be the first to admit I got a very good contract for myself,” Commodore said. “I know (NBC and TSN analyst) Pierre McGuire ran his mouth up there, which is no shocker. I don’t set the market. If you take what I’ve done in the last three years and take my comparables ... I don’t think by any stretch of the imagination it was an unfair contract.”

Senators Free Agency Challenges

From Ken Warren at Canwest News via the National Post,

The club already has $32.3 million US locked up in the ‘08-09 salaries of Heatley, Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher, Martin Gerber and Chris Phillips.

The Senators must re-sign restricted free agents Antoine Vermette and Andrej Meszaros, while also contemplating whether to re-sign unrestricted-free-agent centre Cory Stillman, winger Shean Donovan and defenceman Mike Commodore, or any other player who may become available on July 1.

Commodore, for one, wants to know who the club’s new coach is before weighing his options on whether to return.

Morning Line

via Don Brennan at the Ottawa Sun,

Bryan Murray made light of the struggles of Mike Commodore yesterday, saying that while the big defenceman has brought much of what he was expected to bring to the table, the coach would like to see No. 44 improve his puck skills. “I’m going to loan him my stick,” said Murray. “I think the hands go with it.” Across the hall a few minutes later, Commodore was in no chuckling mood. “Fourteen games, no points, minus-6

Money Year For Commodore

from the News & Observer,

Commodore will make $1.3 million this season in the final year of a two-year contract. After that, if his progress continues, at age 28 he could find himself one of the top defensemen available on the market.

“I thought about it a little bit this summer, and it’s a little bit of motivation, I guess,” Commodore said. “Every summer you try and find something.

“Last year, my motivation was that I’m going to get a big opportunity to play, so I need to work a little harder in the weight room.

“This year, it’s a good opportunity for me to have another good year back-to-back and hopefully see where that takes me.”
