Emrick Leaving The Devils, Now Exclusive With Versus/NBC

from Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick at Devils.com,

To the marvelous fans of the New Jersey Devils:

A good friend advised me several years ago that before any major decision, you should look in the mirror and look at your birth certificate.

Since my contracts with MSG, VERSUS, and NBC all expired late this spring, this was another of those times. I discovered that the birth certificate couldn’t be changed and it showed me to be 65 in a few days.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to spend 23 incredible years with the MSG Network channels and 21 equally enjoyable years—including 3 Stanley Cup championships—with the New Jersey Devils.  However, considering the long-term significance of this decision, I was able to construct a lighter regular season-schedule and the usual complement of Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final games for NBC and VERSUS.

But that assurance of less travel and fewer games has regrettably led me to end my association with the MSG Network channels and the Devils.

‘Doc’ Emrick Calls 3000th Game

from Michelle Crechiolo at DetroitRedWings.com,

Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, who is synonymous with hockey broadcasting, will reach another milestone on Monday when he calls his 3,000th professional men’s hockey game on Versus when the Red Wings host Pittsburgh at Joe Louis Arena.

As a Michigander, Emrick couldn’t be happier that his milestone will be in Hockeytown, because about 40 of his friends and relatives, including his veterinarian and his accountant, will get to celebrate the achievement with him in person.

“It just worked out that way,” said Emrick, who lives with his wife, Joyce, in St. Clair, Michigan, which is northeast of Detroit. “I told my wife about 10 days ago, we planned this day last summer. And I thought, it’s going to be give-or-take, it’s going to be around 3,000 when the game is held, but it came right out on and you never would have thought that. It’ll be kind of a special night.

“We have a couple of relatives flying out for it and then everybody else is in the area. It’ll be nice to have 40 of them all in one place.”

This news coming via an NBC Press Release:

CHICAGO — Dec. 31, 2008 — Hall of Fame broadcaster “Doc” Emrick will be unable to call tomorrow’s NHL Winter Classic due to laryngitis. Dave Strader, who is the play-by-play voice of the Phoenix Coyotes and has also worked for NBC Sports, will fill in for Emrick.

“Last year’s game was a lifetime memory and I couldn’t wait to call this year’s game at Wrigely,” said Emrick. “I’m extremely disappointed but I know Dave will do a wonderful job.”

Emrick Goes To The HHOF

from John McGourty of NHL.com,

On the eve of his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Emrick reflected on his career that began with announcing parts of games at Bowling Green University, where he got his doctorate in radio-television-film. Hence, the nickname. He had been teaching near Pittsburgh and was looking to get his doctorate.

“I was considering going to Michigan or Bowling Green for my doctorate and Bowling Green University had the local NPR station with All Things Considered and their usual shows,” Emrick said. “They had a staff member who broadcast the first and third periods and they felt a student should do the second period.

“That’s what Bowling Green offered me that Michigan could not. That made it pretty easy to make up my mind.”
