Will Mike Green Make Team Canada?

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
Completely unprovoked, Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau spent Tuesday morning lobbying for defenseman Mike Green to make the Canadian Olympic team.
“If I’m Stevie Yzerman, I’m looking at him as one of your top pair,” Boudreau said.
According to people that follow the Capitals closely, it’s the first time Boudreau has publicly made a pitch on Green’s behalf. It’s also an about face from last spring, when after the playoffs were over Boudreau admitted his disappointment in Green’s overall effort through 14 postseason games.

from Japers’ Rink,
One of the great things about being a sports fan in this day and age is the access we have to the players we follow. Through social media and real-time online coverage, our collective insatiable hunger for the latest news (and non-news) is getting fed around the clock.
For example, Mike Green has 2,309 followers on Twitter, some of whom, no doubt are minors. Earlier today, all of them got to see this:

Mike Green Getting Back In Shape
by Paul on 10/15/09 at 08:45 AM ET

from Tarik El-Bashir of the Washingotn Post,
But getting back to the Mike Green who Boudreau played more than anyone else last season first meant nursing himself back to health. Upon returning to his hometown Calgary, he began rehabilitating his injured shoulder. And instead of working on building muscle like most fourth-year professionals, Green focused on shedding the 29 pounds he’d gained during the season and adhering to a healthier diet. Poor eating habits, Green said, had not only caused his weight gain but also were to blame for the dangerously low iron levels that sapped his energy in the playoffs.
“It was a mistake he made,” Boudreau said of Green’s weight. “He let it get away from him.”
It wasn’t the first time Boudreau had seen Green pack on a significant number of pounds during a season.
“The same thing happened in Hershey,” Boudreau added. “I said, ‘Mike, you have to look after your weight.’ So he starved himself and he was so weak. So I said, ‘Mike, forget about it. Just play the way you’re playing. I don’t want you to kill yourself.’ So when he put on a few pounds last year, I wasn’t really ready to bring it up in the middle of a playoff run because I didn’t want it to affect him.”
Craig Custance of the Sporting News takes a look at the play of the Washington Capitals too.

Green Adjusting To New Stick
by Paul on 05/11/09 at 02:37 PM ET

from Tarik El-Bashir of Captals Insider,
Mike Green broke the last of his discontinued Easton Stealths—the stick the slick-skating defenseman used to rack up 31 goals and 73 points—early in Game 1 of this series.
For the rest of that game, and the next two, Green said, “I felt like I was stickhandling for the first time again.”
“It takes a couple of games,” Green added, referring to the process of getting used to the feel of the heavier, stiffer Easton S17 stick that he’s using now. “But today I feel back to normal. It’s weird how that happens.”
“It’s a [crappy] time for that to happen,” he said with a laugh, although I could tell he didn’t really think it was funny.

Mike Green talks with the crew from the NHL Network after scoring his 30th goal last night.
added 2:37, J.P. of Japers’ Rink is disputing a 30 goal scorer from the past…
per “The Big Book of Hockey Trivia,” Phil Housley only scored 24 goals as a defenseman in 1983-84. Mike Green is the magnificent seventh NHL defenseman to score thirty goals in a season, not the eighth.

Green Hurting With Undisclosed Injury

from Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,
He (Mike Green) seemed to be moving okay. But he definitely is not “fine” as both he and Coach Bruce Boudreau said after the Caps’ 5-2 win. If had to speculate, I would guess that he’s got an abdominal or oblique strain.
The team has not provided an official update on his status.

from Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,
Mike Green said if he thought about the history he could make tonight, the game itself might not be as fun.
And, really, Green said, isn’t fun what playing in the NHL is all about?
“I just want to go out and play and do what I’m doing right now,” the Capitals defenseman said. “Whatever comes from it is great. I’m just enjoying myself.”
And scoring goals.
A tally against the Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum and Green, 23, from Calgary, becomes the first NHL blueliner to score goals in eight consecutive games.

Will Green Eventually Score 50?

From Ken Campbell at The Hockey News:
“Right now,” [Mike] Green told the Washington Post recently, “if it’s on my stick, I’m shooting it.”
The question that needs to be asked now, though, is if Paul Coffey’s record of 48 goals, the hallmark for markers by a defenseman in one season, is going to be in jeopardy in the next few seasons? Are we looking at a defenseman who is capable of becoming the first 50-goal scorer in NHL history?
Don’t laugh; it could happen. Green is only 23 years old, which means he could still be five years away from hitting his peak as a player. And look at what he’s doing already.

Q: How is this team different than it has been over the last few years?
A: We have a lot more structure. I think the guys are following what the coaching staff is telling us. With (coach) Bruce (Boudreau) here, he’s been the biggest difference.

Big Hit From Pronger On Mike Green
by Paul on 11/20/08 at 08:12 AM ET

via Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,
Mike Green was wearing a shoulder sling on his right arm after the game. But he said he’s hopeful the injury is not too serious. When I asked him if it was sprained or separated, the defenseman said he won’t know until the morning.
“It was a good hit,” Green said of Chris Pronger’s shoulder check that sent him hurtling into the end boards. “I seen him coming, but he’s so big I couldn’t brace myself. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I’m just trying to keep it still right now. Obviously, it’s not too bad, so we’ll see how tonight goes.”

High Risk, High Reward Hockey
by Alanah McGinley on 10/24/08 at 01:31 PM ET

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,
With the two Alexes – Ovechkin and Semin – leading the charge, the Washington Capitals might be the greatest show on the ice right now, the heir apparent to the swashbuckling Edmonton Oilers of the mid-1980s. If that’s the case, then defenceman Mike Green is the 21st-century equivalent of Paul Coffey in style and approach – one of half-a-dozen promising young rearguards who will get a long look from the management staff of Canada’s 2010 Olympic team. Green plays a high-risk, high-reward style. Most nights, he is a defenceman in name only and plays almost as a fourth forward.
This is done with the permission of his coach Bruce Boudreau who, since taking over the reins of the Capitals last December, loosened them considerably on all of his young players. Now, instead of making a defensive choice on a 50-50 puck battle, they have permission to err on the offensive side. Some nights, it backfires, but on balance, it generally works.
and more on the Capitals plus other hockey topics, from Marian Gaborik to Sarah Palin
Update 1:55pm ET: Ken Campbell at The Hockey News has more thoughts on the Capitals today, specifically on Alex Ovechkin’s season thus far.

Rod Oracheski of 411mania recently interviewed Mke Green of the Washington Capitals…
RO: Now that the Capitals surpassed some external expectations by reaching the playoffs last year, what is the feeling around the team going into next year? How close do you believe you guys are to contending for the Stanley Cup?
MG: Well, just getting off to a good start. Last year we had to fight so hard to even make that playoffs it was like we were dead when we got there. If we can get off to a good start and be in the running halfway through the season, not make it so hard on ourselves, I think we’ll be a lot better for going on a run.
RO: A lot optimism in Washington revolves around last year’s 65-goal scorer, Alexander Ovechkin. What is it like playing with him? Exactly how much does he impact the culture of the team both on and off the ice?
MG: It’s ... I mean you know, everyone knows. He’s the best, or one of the best players in the league. Yeah, anything can happen when he’s on the ice. He’s one of those players that can win you games and it’s just a good thing he’s on our team.

“If someone puts an offer sheet in front of one of our players,” McPhee said during a news conference in Arlington to preview this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft, “we’ll match it - probably in less than 10 minutes.”
McPhee’a comments come a few days after a source told me that (Mike) Green’s camp - which is unhappy with the offers it has received to this point - plans to take negotiations to July 1 in the hopes of attracting an offer sheet.

Keep An Eye On Mike Green
by Paul on 12/19/07 at 12:53 PM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via Yahoo,
The Montreal Canadiens have more than Alex Ovechkin to keep an eye on Thursday night when they visit the Washington Capitals.
Unheralded defenceman Mike Green is blossoming into an offensive force on the back end for the Caps. He was tied with Montreal’s Andrei Markov for the NHL lead in goals by defencemen at eight apiece before other games Wednesday night, a surprising piece of trivia even for the most ardent hockey fans.
“My buddies, that’s about it,” Green said with a laugh when asked who might know the answer to that question.
