from Matt Saler of On The Wings,
This warms my heart: “Mr. Ilitch … kept walking when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman approached him under the stands and tried to shake his hand after Friday night’s game.” No more words need to be said, eh Wings fans?
more from Matt regarding the Wings…

Most Valuable Owner

from Jim Kelley at Sportsnet,
...but if I had a vote for most valuable owner, it would go to Mike Illitch of the Detroit Red Wings.
Year after year the product Illitch puts on the ice as every bit as good as the pizza he puts in the boxes of his first-love business: Little Caesars. His baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, are every bit as good (and well run) as his efforts to reignite development in downtown Detroit. He has his critics, but by and large, Illitch is an owner who understands that you can never go wrong by hiring good people and then giving them what they need to do great work.
His hockey operations are a case in point.

from Tom Walsh of the Detroit Free Press,
“Detroit’s Hockeytown crown has slipped,” wrote SI hockey writer Michael Farber.
Not so fast, says Mike Ilitch, owner of the Red Wings.
On Monday, Ilitch announced the hiring of Steve Violetta as senior vice president for business affairs, a new position reporting directly to Ilitch. Ken Holland, executive vice president and general manager, will continue to run the hockey operation.
Violetta’s mission is clear: Get more butts back in those seats. ASAP.

Ilitch Believes Schedule Change Coming

via the Detroit News,
Ilitch also spoke about his ownership of the Red Wings and the team’s sudden attendance challenges. He blamed “scheduling” boredom for fan disinterest and indicated that changes in the NHL schedule will be forthcoming in the 2008-09 season.
“You’re gonna be able to see a lot of teams,” Ilitch said, implying that the division-heavy scheduling of past seasons will give way to greater diversity. “This is history. This will be the last year with this type of structure, I think.”
