Modano Will Sign One Day Contract With Stars
by Paul on 09/22/11 at 11:43 AM ET

Frisco, Tex. – Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the NHL club will sign center Mike Modano to an official NHL contract, giving him the opportunity to officially retire as a Dallas Star. Modano will sign the contract at Friday’s press conference. Afterwards, he will send in his retirement paperwork to the National Hockey League. Full information on the press conference is listed below.
The amount listed on the contract will be $999,999 in honor of his No. 9.
“This is a special day for all of us,” said Nieuwendyk. “Mike Modano will always be the face of this franchise. He means so much to our organization and all of our fans. We wanted to give him the opportunity to retire as a Dallas Star. Mike has given his heart and soul to this game for over 30 years. On behalf of the entire organization and the National Hockey League, we would like to thank him for his dedication.”

via his Facebook account,
After a long summer of thinking about my future, I’ve come to the decision that it’s time to retire as a player from the NHL. There’s way too many people to thank here at this time and too much to say, so I have a press conference scheduled for early Friday afternoon. Check back Friday late afternoon for more. What a great ride it’s been!

Modano Hopes To Return In March
by Paul on 12/06/10 at 12:34 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Modano said he has wondered at times whether his career is over—this apparently will be his last season—but his goal is to return in March and, he hopes, be part of a long playoff run.
“The opportunity is still there, it’ll still be there in March when I come back,’’ Modano said. “That time of year is always exciting and fun, the opportunity to take one more last run at it. The skill level of the team is certainly going to be the same situation. Hopefully come back well-rested, in good shape, feeling good, positive about that time of year.’’

Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II
by Phil Davies on 10/31/10 at 11:35 AM ET
Comments (4)
This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.
Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk
Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.
Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava
Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

Modano Returns To Dallas

from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,
Wings coach Mike Babcock said he intends to start Modano’s line, which includes Dan Cleary and Jiri Hudler, in Dallas tonight.
“He didn’t finish the way he wanted,” Babcock said.
“That’s life. They’ve moved on and so has he. I hope he plays great and gets three.
“His line will start. They’ll get a chance to be out there during the national anthem. They’ll get a chance to introduce him.
“That stuff is important.”

Modano Catching Up With Wings Tempo
by Paul on 09/30/10 at 07:47 AM ET
Comments (4)
from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,
Modano was asked if Wings coach Mike Babcock’s training camp regime is all that different from what’s he experienced in Dallas.
The Livonia native was surprisingly blunt in his comparisons to Stars’camps run the past three seasons by former coach Dave Tippett and current Dallas bench boss Marc Crawford.
“The last two or three years there’s been a real big difference,” Modano said.
“I think the pace and tempo is night and day from what we’re used to. Very similar to what Hitch (Ken Hitchcock) was doing in the last 90s early 2000, similar style.
“You needed to be in shape. You needed to skate hard to be effective.
“That’s kind of my situation now is to play a little catchup and try to refer back to those days how we played.”

Modano Shooting For 50

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Somewhere in Mike Modano’s new place in Detroit, there is a slip of paper or Post-it note where he’s penciled in what he thinks he’s capable of producing in his new hockey home.
It doesn’t mean anything necessarily, but something to remind him of where he’s at, where he needs to go.
“I think you need to do that. I just need to know, see those things written down, and you wake up every day trying to accomplish them,” Modano said in an interview after the Wings’ workout at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday. “If they’re written down and you’re looking at them, I think it’s good for guys.”
So what did the 40-year-old center write down?
“I wrote down 20 and 30—20 goals, 30 assists,” Modano said. “I think with the talent and the possibility of playing a little power play there and whatnot, [it] could be close to that.”

Modano On His Way To Detroit
by Paul on 09/08/10 at 06:44 AM ET
Comments (8)
from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
It’s not like Mike Modano had to pull up the moving van and take all his furniture to Detroit, but Tuesday was nonetheless a challenging day for the former Stars center.
He and wife Mandy (who goes by the stage name of Willa Ford) have rented a home in the Detroit area, and Modano is leaving today to play for the Red Wings, who signed him to a one-year contract. He packed up his clothes and a ton of personal things and had some friends drive it up for him. He will take a flight to Detroit today and start what will be a one-year adventure.
Will it last longer than that? Modano doesn’t know, but the man who was told he would not be offered a new contract with the Stars after 20 seasons with the organization knows he wants to play more hockey, and he knows Detroit is a pretty good place to play it.

added 2:25pm, press conference is over and I will try to get an archived feed of it later today.
Hopefully you can watch the Modano press conference below starting at 2:00pm ET. In the meantime….
from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
Modano will start camp centering the third line between Cleary and Hudler. Holland said if they don’t develop chemistry, Modano could switch with Filppula and play between Franzen and Bertuzzi. Filppula has played with Hudler and Cleary in the past.
“I see (Modano) maybe playing 14 to 16 minutes a night guy and probably in his prime he played 18 to 22,” Holland said. “There are going to be nights when he’s probably feeling good and he’s dancing, and Babcock is going to get him out there more. There will be other nights when you can tell he just doesn’t have it and somebody else will play more.”

Modano Confirms Detroit Press Conference & Other Topics
by Paul on 08/05/10 at 07:35 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Mike Heiika of the Dallas Morning News,
He confirmed he will be in Detroit for a press conference on Friday to sign with the Red Wings.
I asked him why he didn’t need to skate to see if he really wanted to play again.
“We had scheduled this trip and it kind of fell in the middle of all of that, and they have been nice enough to wait for me, so I just knew I wanted to play and I knew we needed to get this done. They have some contracts that they need to take care of, and this just felt right and makes sense to me.”
Did you give any thought to playing in Minnesota or San Jose or any other place really?
“I did, but Detroit pushed very hard from the start. They want me there, they think I can help, and they’re very open about it. That was neat. It’s such a good organization and they really, really believe they’re going to have a great team this year. They said the injuries were ridiculous last year, and they’re ready to bounce back from that. I really think they’re a team where you can think about winning it all.”
To have a guy like Mike Babcock show so much confidence in you has to be a pretty good feeling.

Detroit Wanted Modano
by Paul on 08/04/10 at 07:34 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
They believed enough in Modano to fly him in and sell him on the franchise. Imagine, selling someone on what is arguably the best managed and most successful franchise in the NHL for the better part of the last two decades.
Detroit has won 15 division championships – and four Stanley Cups – in the last 20 seasons. The Red Wings typically are top five in scoring and in power-play success. They have produced numerous All-Stars and trophy winners.
And they seriously believe Modano will make them better.
That is intoxicating to a guy who was just told that he should look elsewhere.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
Mike Modano will join the Red Wings, the Free Press has learned.
The Wings have been in hot pursuit of Modano, flying him in from Dallas a month ago and wooing him over lunch and a Tigers game. He also has suitors in San Jose and Minnesota, but has made up his mind.
“Big announcement Thursday,” Modano sent in a text Monday.
Modano returns from his European vacation mid-week and he could be landing in Detroit and sitting in on a press conference on Thursday.
I’ve been telling readers how Modano will strengthen the 2nd unit of the power play, now we are about to find out if I was correct.

Can Modano Play A Whole Season?
by Paul on 07/23/10 at 11:09 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
It’s not an issue of whether Modano has the will to lace ‘em up in September or October; but what is his will to play out an entire season? That seemed to be an issue in Dallas the past couple of seasons and explains in part why the Stars made the choice to walk away from a player who has been the face of the franchise for two decades.
If we were Wings GM Ken Holland, we’d take a run at Bill Guerin or Paul Kariya to add veteran scoring punch and give one of your young prospects a shot at centering the third line. Less nostalgic, perhaps; but, in the long run, we’re guessing it would be a more productive move with less potential for dressing-room headaches.

Again, It Sounds Like Detroit Or Retire For Modano
by Paul on 07/20/10 at 07:15 PM ET
Comments (8)
from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Modano said there still are times when he has doubt, and he needs to make sure that’s not there. Modano said he and representatives from Octagon Sports have had conversations with management from Minnesota and San Jose , but that they have not set up any visits or meetings with the Wild or Sharks. He said he has had a ton of conversations with Detroit, and that coach Mike Babcock has been very persuasive. Babcock told nhl.com last week that he felt Modano would indeed play in Detroit, where he was born and grew up….
Modano said Babcock has been just as energetic in person, and he said that’s a great feeling. Babcock might just be the most respected coach in the NHL right now. He led Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, and for him to say he believes Modano can be an important part of a very good Red Wings team is intoxicating.
“Definitely,” Modano said. “He’s a great coach, and he’s very serious about making this work. That’s one of the reasons I am taking this seriously. I know what will be expected, and I want to make sure I can do it.”

Modano No Closer To A Decision
by Paul on 07/17/10 at 06:59 PM ET
Comments (6)
from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,
The Red Wings aren’t pressuring him, that’s for sure. General manager Ken Holland has presented his offer—apparently for one-year and $1.25 million (more than I’d been speculating)—and whether Modano takes it will not impact Holland’s ability to re-sign restricted free agents Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm.
The Wings can wait; too bad so many of their fans can’t. It seems that an alarmingly large number of Red Wings fans, at least from the e-mails I’ve been getting, want to vilify Modano.
“If Modano doesn’t want to play here, forget him,” has been a common sentiment.
“What, is he too Hollywood for the Red Wings now?” is another.
It is not like that. Just because he didn’t immediately fall all over himself to sign with the Wings doesn’t mean he disrespected the organization. Just because he hasn’t yet accepted the $1.25 million offer doesn’t mean he feels slighted or he’s holding out for more.
Ha, I think the same people who are emailing Chris eat at where I had breakfast today. That is all anyone wanted to talk to me about, “why hasn’t Modano signed with the Wings yet…”

just spoke with Mike Babcock and he’s convinced that Mike Modano will sign with the Red Wings, and play 2 years in Detroit.
Babcock said he met with Modano in Detroit earlier in the week and now believes it’s just a matter of time before he signs, but…
He also said he’s been wrong before, so it wouldn’t shock him if he is again. He doesn’t think we’ll know until Aug. 1 at the earliest.

Go To Detroit Mo
by Paul on 07/14/10 at 05:02 AM ET
Comments (11)
from Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News,
Mike Modano should wear the hated Detroit Red Wings’ red sweater this season as long as he’s playing because he can’t imagine life without hockey – not because his ego needs some TLC.
It’s easy to see why Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk made the difficult, but correct, decision to inform Modano that he’d played his last season for the Stars.
Like most superstars, especially those who spend the bulk of their career with one team, Modano feels a certain sense of entitlement.
Talk to enough people within the organization and they’ll tell you that Modano, while still likeable, had become a curmudgeon the last couple of seasons.

What Will Modano Do?
by Paul on 07/11/10 at 08:12 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Mke Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
...the bottom line is Modano has to find a way to make himself happy in the new place. If he can’t do that, he just might retire. Quite honestly, I think he could see himself happy in a lot of situations. I think Minnesota is too close to Dallas in that the Wild is rebuilding, as well, but I do think he would be energized by the Red Wings or Sharks. And, if you look around, there are other teams that could use his services. It wouldn’t surprise me if a couple of more GMs contact him this week.
So what does that all mean? Modano is still deciding. It’s a huge step to emerge from a divorce like this. He’s been on his first date now, and I think he’s processing that information. He has the time, and appears to have a few options, so teams will just have to wait and see what he’s thinking. Could a team like Detroit close the door? Sure, but I think the Red Wings knew this was going to be a process, and they are being patient with Modano.

Forget about the Blackhawks or any other NHL team. If Westland native Mike Modano decides he wants to play hockey next season, he is going play for the Red Wings.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,
It’s an interesting idea, but the chances of Mike Modano ending his career in with the Red Wings appear slim.
Modano’s wife is actress Willa Ford. The couple wouldn’t mind settling in Los Angeles to stop the endless commuting during hockey season for Ford.
That makes the Kings and Anaheim Ducks logical destinations for Modano. The Kings and Ducks have sufficient salary cap space, and both teams could use depth at center.

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Here’s a goofy idea: I would love to see Mike Modano play for another team next season.
If _ and this is a big if _ if Modano was happy.
He wasn’t last season. He didn’t have a real place on the Stars. The team didn’t play well. His ability to fight through frustration had worn down. That happens when you get older and have put up with a lot in your career. It’s hard to battle through the tough times.
But if you get a fresh start, a change of pace, a new challenge, your resolve becomes stronger.

Still unsure about his future in hockey, the Stars’ Mike Modano talked about some of his thoughts as he ponders next season.
On whether he feels he is part of the Stars’ plans next season: The vibes haven’t changed much. I have a sense of the direction that the team is going in, and I’m not sure if I’m part of that. I’ll have to see what unfolds in July.
On possibly playing for another team next season: I can’t say that wouldn’t happen, but for me to go to a different team, it has to be an organization that I’m very familiar with. That way I would feel comfortable.

from Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants,
Modano will be honored by the Wild during a video tribute during the second TV timeout (first non-icing or goal stoppage after the 10-minute mark of the first period). It’s his call, but it appears as if at some point tonight Modano will slip on a North Stars sweater. It’s unknown if that will be in warmups, during a stoppage or after the game. He said maybe “during the game,” but I emailed Bill Daly and he says that request hasn’t been asked yet or considered.
I don’t see how he’d be allowed to wear it during the game (he wore seven or so Stars sweaters during his home finale the other day), if for no other reasons than Reebok sponsors NHL jerseys.
Modano reunited with former North Stars/Stars teammate Neal Broten this morning during a hilarious conversion that took place for about 25 minutes with us media and others contributing. Some great lines.

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Modano could be playing his last home game tonight, as he turns 40 in June and his contract is up at the end of the season. The Stars’ all-time leader in just about every offensive category said he will wait until the summer to decide if he wants to retire, but he acknowledged that this indeed could be the end.
“I have to be aware of it, definitely,” he said. “So you make plans just in case.”
Modano is inviting his parents to the final game of the season, Saturday in Minnesota, and said he’s prepared for an emotional send-off from Stars fans tonight. But he also added that whether he retires or not, he’d like to be involved in hockey with the Dallas Stars.

Direction Of Stars May Decide Modano’s Decision To Play Or Not

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Mike Modano really doesn’t know what he wants to do about this retirement thing.
Rather, I think he thinks he doesn’t have all the information he needs yet.
Modano would probably love to play another year on a good team where he plays an important role (wouldn’t we all). He doesn’t want to play another year on a bad team where he is redundant. So which would it be with the Stars next season? It appears there are some decisions that need to be made before any kind of judgment can be made.

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Three teams were pursuing Mike Modano at the trade deadline, but Modano said he did not want to waive his no-trade clause and leave the only team he has been a part of.
Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk, who flew in from the NHL GM meetings in Florida for the Buffalo game, confirmed when asked about the situation that he asked Modano the day before the trade deadline if he wanted to pursue a move. Nieuwendyk said he did not get to a place where he was negotiating deals, because he first had to establish if Modano was open to leaving. Nieuwendyk said he did not want to reveal the teams, but Modano said one was Washington.
“We talked about this a couple of months ago, and we agreed at the time that if there were teams interested, I would bring the information to Mike,’’ Nieuwendyk said. “I did that, and he decided he wanted to stay.”

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
Modano has scored seven of his 13 goals this season in the past 10 games—in large part because coach Marc Crawford has given the 39-year-old occasional days off from practice.
“It’s been a good stretch,” said Modano, who added an assist against the Wild. “I feel like I’m getting some good looks on net, and some quality chances and shots have been finding their way through legs and the goalies. So it’s been a good run, I’m feeling a little better, opportunities have been following me around, rebounds have been there, some guys have made some good passes to free up some shots, so it’s been a good half-dozen games or so.”

It is disappointing. This would have been a really fun time, especially in Vancouver. But I understand the process and I understand what they were doing. I guess the hardest part is this pretty much was the last chance to play for (Team USA), but when you get to my age there are going to be things like this that are inevitable.

Modano Day-To-Month
by Paul on 10/19/09 at 07:50 PM ET

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Mike Modano was flying through a morning skate practice on Friday and looked good, whipping shots on net, flipping backhanded passes to teammates and skating with the natural stride that looks all too smooth to come from 39-year-old legs.
And then it happened.
“I tried a one-timer from (Mike) Ribeiro, and it just fell apart,” Modano said of a tweak to a rib injury that has kept him out since the first game of the season.
And so the Stars center went from thinking he would be in the lineup Monday against the Kings to not knowing when he might return. He said he doubts he will be on the Stars’ three-game road trip that starts Wednesday in Anaheim and lists himself as “day to day for the next month.”

from Richard Durrett at the Dallas Stars Blog at ESPN,
Stars coach Marc Crawford said Mike Modano hurt his rib in Saturday’s game and that he will get some X-rays on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. Modano did not practice Sunday, but did get treatment.
“Right at the end of the game, he was speared to get a loose puck away from him and it hit him exactly right or exactly wrong,” Crawford said. “He’ll have a scan tomorrow and we’ll see where it’s at.”

“I’ve made my decision and I’m coming back to play. I think everyone eventually knew I was going to come back, but I still wanted to take some time and think about things. Watching everyone else playing in the playoffs helped push me to make the decision. This is the best time of year and we want to get back to playing post-season hockey next season.”

Modano Not Sure If He Will Play Next Season

from Andrew’s Dallas Stars Page,
Mike Modano was on The Ticket Friday morning and was asked by Norm Hitzges if he had decided whether he’ll play next season. Here’s what Mike had to say;
“No, not right now and I probably won’t for a while,” Modano told Hitzges. “I am going to take a step back for a long, lengthy part of the summer and see how I feel. I think time away from the game is going to help me mentally, just to kind of recharge, think things through and see where the team is heading….”

Modano Admits His Head Wasn’t In The Game
by Paul on 03/09/09 at 07:06 AM ET

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
“We expect more from Modano than what he gave us tonight,” Stars coach Dave Tippett said. “And without that, it’s going to be bad for us.”
Modano has one goal in his last 20 games. He was minus-3 against the Canadiens in 20:45 of ice time.
“Tonight was a mental thing,” Modano said. “You could tell the head wasn’t there, and your body’s not too far behind without focus or concentration. There are nights when it’s a struggle and that’s what you deal with. When your body isn’t feeling good and you’re not feeling light, things all add up to missed passes and the little things as far as trying to make those plays.”

Ryan Now #9 In Honor Of Modano
by Paul on 03/07/09 at 09:28 AM ET

from Curtis Zupke of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
There was symbolism when Bobby Ryan scored his highlight-reel goal in the third period against Dallas on Friday.
Ryan was playing his first game wearing jersey No. 9. The Ducks gave it to him per club tradition for players who have established themselves. Ryan also happened to have worn the number as a kid in homage to his favorite player: Modano.
The 38-year-old future Hall of Famer smiled when told that last tidbit.
“It gives you an idea of how long you’ve been around,” Modano said. “It’s kind of neat to see that he did that.
“He’s going to be a fun kid to watch. It seems like he’s going to have a great career. Great skill, great hands. Obviously, on that second goal he made a great move. It lets you know you’re kind of getting up there.”

Modano On The Signing Of Avery
by Paul on 01/14/09 at 04:45 PM ET

from Dave Gross of Camwest News Service via the National Post,
Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano believes the Sean Avery saga could have been handled differently.
Speaking with the media on Wednesday afternoon, Modano said the entire headache - that became the talk of the National Hockey League for the better part of December and early parts of January - could have been avoided with a bit of advance research by the Stars.
“I think we would have analyzed (the signing) a little bit more over the summer before you go into the free-agent market. Do a little more homework and detailed analysis (and get the opinions) of players who have played with him, or how guys feel about it,” said Wednesday the 19-year veteran during a conference call.

Modano Eyeing His Future
by Paul on 12/06/08 at 09:38 AM ET

from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,
Modano’s time on the ice is winding down, which is why he’s begun looking not at those players whose names are listed above his in terms of goals and assists, but at those who have made a seemingly painless transition to hockey’s other side.
Many of Modano’s former Dallas teammates have made just such a move: Guy Carbonneau and Kirk Muller are the Montreal Canadiens’ head coach and assistant coach, respectively; Joe Nieuwendyk is a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ management team; and in Dallas, in a move that raised as many eyebrows as an Avery putdown, the Stars have Brett Hull as a co-general manager.
Toss in Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings and Ron Francis, who left the Carolina Hurricanes front office to become an associate coach, and it’s clear the attraction of becoming a hockey administrator and power broker without having to start squarely at the bottom is too great to ignore.
“Steve has become a key part of Team Canada, and I’ve always felt I want to be a part of USA Hockey — on the executive or helping select teams for the world championships,” Modano said.

Modano Has Had Enough

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Stars Blog, Here’s Mike Modano after the penalty filled game in which Steve Ott and Sean Avery were jawing with officials and fans:
“Tonight, it was idiotic and stupid,’’ Stars center Mike Modano said when asked what the team identity was. “It was one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen. If that’s what we’re going for, then they need to find me an office job.”
“It was dumb penalties, dumb situations, that’s kind of been the trend all season,” Modano said. “There’s no mental toughness. We’re allowing the refs to get involved in the game with and spending more energy on them than the details of winning the game.”
I was able to catch some of this game last night, and Avery and Ott were an embarrassment to the game!

Hunger Back For Modano
by Paul on 09/14/08 at 05:58 AM ET

from Tracey Myers of the Star-Telegram,
...as Modano enters his 19th NHL season, he’s feeling that hunger, that desire for his sport. Sure, training camp, which begins Friday, doesn’t bring out the giddiness of many players; but that regular-season schedule isn’t far away, and those games are what have Modano ready to roll again.
“There’s some excitement, knowing we’re very close and our team’s better adding the guys that we did,” he said. “We’re looking forward to that again. I think we feel the components are there, the players are there, that people are coming into their age.”
