Milbury Talks

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

In an exclusive two-hour interview with the Globe on Saturday morning, former Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury offered his side of the Dec. 9 incident at a Brookline outdoor rink for which he now could face assault charges.

According to the 59-year-old Milbury, he acted only to break up an on-ice altercation between 12-year-old hockey players, one of them his son, which had him briefly restraining the player from the Everett-based club who was skirmishing with his son prior to a shootout contest.

‘‘I want to be clear about a couple of things,’’ said Milbury. ‘‘No one was punched, kicked or assaulted in any way. I know the ‘Mad Mike’ image that I have and all that. I love the game, I’m passionate about it, but I don’t smack kids around. I grabbed the other kid by the sweater to stop a fight and, yeah, I swore at him. That’s it. That’s what I did…”.

Emrick Leaving The Devils, Now Exclusive With Versus/NBC

from Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick at Devils.com,

To the marvelous fans of the New Jersey Devils:

A good friend advised me several years ago that before any major decision, you should look in the mirror and look at your birth certificate.

Since my contracts with MSG, VERSUS, and NBC all expired late this spring, this was another of those times. I discovered that the birth certificate couldn’t be changed and it showed me to be 65 in a few days.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to spend 23 incredible years with the MSG Network channels and 21 equally enjoyable years—including 3 Stanley Cup championships—with the New Jersey Devils.  However, considering the long-term significance of this decision, I was able to construct a lighter regular season-schedule and the usual complement of Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final games for NBC and VERSUS.

But that assurance of less travel and fewer games has regrettably led me to end my association with the MSG Network channels and the Devils.

Canadian hockey fans will be seeing a lot less of Pierre McGuire in the future.

The ubiquitous analyst, who has been dividing his time between Canada and the United States since NBC regained the U.S. rights for National Hockey League games in 2006, has decided to concentrate on his duties south of the border.

“It’s a chance to spend more time with my family,” said the 50-year-old McGuire, who has an 11-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old. “I’ll be doing two games a week for Versus or NBC and spend one night in the Versus studio.”

With Ebersol Gone, Olympics On NBC May Be Too

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

The resignation of NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol raises serious questions about the network’s commitment to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia – and, by extension, the attendance of NHL players in those Games. Industry rumours said Ebersol was having trouble convincing the new owners of NBC and Comcast to shell out the significant money needed for Sochi after losing a considerable amount on the Vancouver Games in 2010. Matters reportedly came to a head Thursday morning, with Ebersol telling staffers he was gone.

It’s hard to see the NHL doing business on ABC or ESPN after signing its recent 10-year deal with the NBC and Comcast. The negotiations for the U.S. Olympic TV rights will be determined in June.

NBC Needs To Be Better

from Phil Mushnick of the NY Post,

Had to enjoy that Wonder-bread sandwich NBC served Saturday. The Rangers-Capitals telecast came in the middle of two slices of preposterous.

The game began 20 minutes after NBC advertised it would, an old, dishonest trick that NBC Sports has reprised.

So after 20 minutes of commercials, come-ons and pregame analysis, the game began. Fifty-five seconds later, the first whistle stopped play. So NBC—less than a minute into the game—sent it to mid-ice, where Pierre McGuire provided some more analysis!

What more was there for us to consider after 55 seconds? McGuire, on camera, reported the self-evident: The Rangers had begun with a decent, hustling scoring chance (but so did the Capitals!) and the Rangers would have to produce more such chances to win this game.

No kidding? Thanks.

When the game and series ended, McGuire sat with 21-year-old Capitals defenseman John Carlson. McGuire’s first question was, “When did you guys start to feel you had a chance to win this series?”

NHL & NBC Schedule Major Announcement For Today

NEW YORK (April 19, 2011) – The National Hockey League and the NBC Sports Group will make a major announcement on a media conference call TODAY at 1 p.m. ET. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Sports Group will participate along with additional NHL and NBC Sports Group executives.

WHO:      Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner
Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Sports Group
Additional NHL and NBC Sports Group executives

WHAT
:      Major Announcement

WHEN:      TODAY at 1 p.m. ET

added 11:01am, from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

Estimates are that the league will make $220-million (U.S.) per year over the course of the decade-long deal. The previous agreement saw NBC and the NHL splitting profits on their network package with no rights fee to the league. The deal also represents the first time the NHL has renewed its U.S. network TV contract with the same network since the 1960s. It marks a triumph for NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who spurned ESPN after the 2004-‘05 lockout and has stuck with NBC and Comcast (whose chairman Ed Snider owns the Philadelphia Flyers) despite criticism of the household reach of Versus, their hockey channel.

In turn, NBC/ Comcast is promising to make over hockey as its prime sports tenant on Versus (soon to be NBC Sports Channel) and a significant force on the main network. Sources tell the Globe & Mail that the broadcaster and the league are looking to create a “March Madness” style promotion of the playoffs on both NBC and its news sports cable channel. The anticipated loss of one or two U.S. franchises to Canada does not appear to have been an impediment to the contract.

No Plans For Don Cherry on American TV

From A.J. Perez and CBS Sports’ Eye on Hockey:

He’s been seen here and there on NBC over the years and he goes on the Jim Rome Show—Smack-off is Friday by the way, clones—on occasion. His sporadic showing stateside could have a little something to do with what he told a Pittsburgh TV station years ago when they put up an image of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr on the screen.

“There’s Mario and his sister,” the NHL coach turned analyst blurted out.

Versus spokesman Meier Raivich said in an e-mail that there are no plans to use Cherry, either on Versus or corporate cousin, NBC .

Are You Watching?

via Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times,

NBC’s hockey intermissions have become can’t-miss viewing for fans with the very opinionated Milbury and McGuire. On Sunday, they took on the Islanders-Penguins debacle of Friday night that featured 346 penalty minutes, 10 ejections, 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts. Both were highly critical, particularly of the Islanders, but Milbury had the guts to say this: “We have fighting in this game, not because of the logical hogwash that says players need to have it to police the game. That’s just hogwash. We have it because we like it. … We like the violent part of it whether we admit it or not. We allow it to a certain point. When it goes past that certain point, we all cringe and say, ‘Oh, my God. We’ve got to do something about it.’ ‘’

One Big Happy Media Family

This was announced earlier today but waited for a story that did not include a lot of legalize…

from Joe Flint of the LA Times,

The Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department have approved Comcast Corp.‘s deal to take a majority stake in General Electric Co.‘s NBC Universal, the government actions needed to create a new media and entertainment behemoth that spans television, a Hollywood movie studio and the Internet.

Announced 13 months ago, the deal puts under one roof the nation’s largest cable and broadband operator with one of the country’s most storied broadcasters, whose assets include networks NBC and Telemundo as well as Universal Pictures and cable channels USA, Syfy and Bravo.

The FCC didn’t give carte blanche to Comcast Corp, however. Its approval was contingent upon Comcast Corp. agreeing to conditions that the government hopes will reign in the media giant. Comcast also made commitments to boost NBC Universal’s news and public affairs programming.

The conditions, most of which run seven years, include requirements that Comcast make its content available to rival cable and satellite distributors as well as online distributors.

NBC spent twenty minutes or so before the opening face-off on inane filler, including, most egregiously, the now regular segment in which three of their commentators (Pierre McGuire, Mike Milbury, and Jeremy Roenick, who may be the three most blustery figures in the game, which is presumably why NBC has them on) don their skates and ostensibly reënact a key play from the previous game. Except they don’t really mimic the original play; they shed very little light on it. It’s just an opportunity for them to make self-congratulatory, jocky wisecracks that play on their personas as (former) pros and (failed) coaches…

“My mother-in-law is a diehard (New Jersey) Devils fans. So for me to be here at the Stanley Cup Final with Doc Emrick (the regular-season play-by-play man for the Devils), well, that is bigger than any Super Bowl. Hands-down better to her. So I am scoring a lot of points at home.

More NBC Numbers

Vancouver - March 1, 2010 - Sunday afternoon’s USA vs. Canada gold medal hockey game, that NBC’s Bob Costas called, “One of the greatest sports events I have ever seen,” was the most-watched hockey game in 30 years.  Canada’s epic 3-2 overtime victory (3:20-6:13 p.m. ET) drew an average viewership of 27.6 million, the most watched hockey broadcast of any kind since the USA vs. Finland 1980 gold medal game in Lake Placid on Feb. 24, 1980 (32.8 million).  For historical comparison, the “Miracle on Ice” USA-Russia semifinal game that aired on tape delay on Feb 22, 1980 from the Lake Placid Games drew 34.2 million average viewers.

“We’ve been fortunate to have a front-row seat to observe a nation of fans that appreciates winter sports, is proud of their winter sport heritage and celebrates success - no matter which country wins - so it was only fitting yesterday when Sidney Crosby scored the goal to give Canadians the gold that meant so much to this country,” said Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics.  “‘O Canada’ will never be the same.”

The beauty of having a guy between the benches.  McGuire reported early in the first period that Canada coach Mike Babcock was telling his players to get more pucks on net and cease with the fancy stuff. NBC- Hockey Fans Need Some Clarification

Team USA is scheduled to face Team Switzerland at 3:00pm ET Wednesday on NBC, but the NBC TV schedule only has a only a two hour time frame for the game.

What hockey fans need to know from NBC is this- Will you carry the game until conclusion on NBC or when the clock strikes 5:00pm ET, will you be shifting the game to one of the other NBC stations?

You see, people need to set their DVR before they go to work in the morning and would like an answer they can trust.  I’ve received over 50 emails today on this topic and would appreciate an answer.

If any KK member or guest has heard anything, please leave a comment below.

I would think it would be safe to assume NBC would carry the game in full, but….

update 2/24/10 at 9:22am, via Puck the Media,

A representative from NBC told Puck the Media last night that the game will be aired in it’s entirety.  I worded the question specifically to include potential overtime and shootouts.  So our long, national nightmare is over.

Watching NBC & MSNBC

VANCOUVER – February 22, 2010 – NBCU’s Sunday Olympic broadcasts were seen by 87 million total viewers, the most viewers for any day so far for the Vancouver Games, 16 million more and 22 percent higher than the comparable Sunday from the 2006 Games (72 million), according to data available today from The Nielsen Company.

The primetime coverage on NBC and MSNBC that included figure skating’s original dance and alpine skiing’s men’s super combined on NBC and the USA-Canada hockey game on MSNBC had 69 million total viewers, the best viewership for the comparable Sunday night since the *tabloid-fueled Lillehammer Games (79 million).

*Fueled by the tabloid coverage of the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding scandal.

8.2 MILLION AVERAGE VIEWERSHIP FOR WATCH USA-CANADA HOCKEY GAME ON MSNBC: An average audience of 8.22 million watched the USA hockey team defeat Canada, 5-3, nearly matching the best average viewership for a program on MSNBC. (Election Night Coverage, 8.23 million on Nov. 4, 2008).

★ The hockey game on MSNBC received a national household rating of 4.3, the third highest-rated program in MSNBC’s history behind the Democratic Presidential debate (2/26/08, 4.9 rating) and the analysis following the debate (4.4 rating).

NBC Sends The NHL A Message

from Steve Rosenbloom of RosenBlog at the Chicago Tribune,

First, the NHL in the Olympics mirrors the silliness of the parallel universe that is the whole warped fantasy sports experience, where Blackhawks fans are rooting for Duncan Keith to turn over the puck in the slot.

Then there’s the whole stupid notion of shutting down the league for two weeks. What business does that? What business with good business sense, I mean.

And wise up, the argument ended Sunday when NBC decided the NHL is not good for Olympic coverage, at least not on its big-boy channel, no matter that it was the greatest possible rivalry the NHL could offer network TV.

Nope. Sorry. Ski cross gets the kids and pretty, shiny hobbies like that cockamamie pairs ice dancing get the women. U.S.-Canada hockey, you be good kids and run down to a cable channel without high-def, OK?

Stop Complaining

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Hockey is not being disrespected by NBC. Viewers who happened to be home during the day and would have enjoyed watching Lindsey Vonn go for it live in the downhill, they were disrespected. Sports and competition are being disrespected by NBC, but hockey does not measure among the victims.

I have never quite understood why people who love hockey are so consumed with validation from the masses who simply do not appreciate the sport. Of course NBC isn’t devoting three hours of a preliminary-round hockey game between the U.S. and Canada on its prime commercial network.

To expect otherwise is lunacy, and to protest the network’s decision by playing the lack-of-respect card is counter-productive.

Yes, it is unfortunate that the enticing matchup will notbe available in HD while it is televised on MSNBC, presumably from start to finish. Anyone who wants to watch—maybe not DirecTV people, actually, which would be unfortunately commonplace for them, given the ongoing dispute that has kept Versus dark all season—can watch, just as every single game in the tournament has been and will be televised.

NBC Corrects Matt Lauer Mistake

via Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

Sorry, hockey fans. Matt Lauer, host of NBC’s “Today” show,  misspoke Friday morning when he said Sunday’s preliminary-round hockey showdown between the U.S. and Canada will be shown on NBC.

A spokesman for NBC Universal confirmed that the game will be aired on MSNBC, as planned, and that Lauer was mistaken in saying the game would be broadcast on NBC.

It Is All About The Ratings For NBC

from Neil Best at the GazetteXtra,

Like it or not, my fellow journalists and avid sports fans, the Olympics are a sports TV creature unlike any other, and NBC doesn’t care how often we rail against that reality.

Deal with it: Even in an era of easy access to real-time information, many of the non-typical sports fans who enjoy the Games—including the ones in my house—like a neatly packaged, conveniently timed show to digest after dinner.

NBC mostly has delivered on its promise to present marquee events such as snowboarding and figure skating live—or close to it—thanks to the favorable time difference with Vancouver. Americans Shani Davis and Shaun White won their golds live Wednesday before and after the Vonn Show.

But consider this: In the West, where everything is on delay, outraging many fans and journalists, the Games are doing even better than in the East.

If You Know It NBC, Why Don’t You Do It?

from Seth Livingstone of USA TODAY,

Hockey fans looking to watch the USA-Canada game Sunday will need to view it like the rest of NBC’s pre-gold medal hockey package —on NBC’s cable partner MSNBC.

With an Olympic audience that skews heavily female, NBC will opt to show figure skating’s original dance programs live, rather than the hockey rivalry which will air at 7 p.m. ET.

Christopher McCloskey, vice president of communications at NBC Sports, says the three-hour time commitment makes for a difficult situation, in part because hockey fans want to see games in their entirety.

Frustration Sets In

NBC, get your act together when it comes to broadcasting Olympic hockey.

Hockey fans in the USA deserve much better than what you are providing.

The latest example, Sweden/Germany game tonight.  Had to switch to MSNBC (due to extended curling action_ to catch the game, then 8pm ET rolls around, Doc Emrick tells us switch to CNBC to continue watching the game, yet curling is on.

Four stations available to broadcast on and yet you can’t get the game on TV?

Again, hockey fans deserve better treatment than this!

Strike Two NBC

from Greg Wyshynski of PuckDaddy,

You see, tt was important for CNBC to stay with women’s curling because they promoted the heck out of the event during the U.S. men’s ice hockey team game earlier in the day, with an interview featuring ... oh, wait, that was Sidney Crosby(notes) of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, whose Team Canada game was being preempted by preliminary round women’s curling? Our mistake.

So the Canada game started late into the first period over on MSNBC, before it was moved back to CNBC around 8 p.m. EST, so the Peacock’s cable news outlet could fulfill its nightly obligations of progressive indignation and Sarah Palin outrage.

The least the NBC umbrella of channels could have done was run a crawler on the bottom of the screen or announce the channel changes, but they did not.

Is This The Type Of Content We Can Expect From NBC Regarding Olympic Hockey?

via Mike Florio of Rinkside, an NBC Hockey blog for the Olympics,

Before a single puck can drop during the Olympic hockey competition, the games must officially be declared open. And before the games officially can be declared open, the oversized S’mores maker must be properly ignited.

And the guy who is believed to be the leading candidate to light the fire is the same guy who lit the lamp for many years in the NHL.

According to the Toronto Sun, Wayne Gretzky is the most likely candidate to do the honors.

Surprisingly, Gretzky’s wife has bet $100 dollars (Canadian) on Mario Lemieux.
