How Clean is Stanley Cup? Read our Lips

From the Chicago Tribune’s Sam Roe:

Go ahead: Touch it, hug it, give it a big wet kiss.

The Stanley Cup isn’t the germ bomb you might suspect.

The NHL champion Blackhawks’ beloved trophy stopped by the Chicago Tribune newsroom Thursday, and so we took the opportunity to do something the Cup’s keeper said had never been done: We swabbed it for germs.

Blues are Stockpiling Young Defensemen

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford:

The old adage in hockey is that a team never can have enough defensemen. Well, the Blues are proving that wrong, at least when it comes to stockpiling young defenders.

Of the club’s last seven first-round picks, four play on the blue line. With the trade of forward Lars Eller last week, the team’s highest remaining draft pick in each of the past four years is a defenseman: Erik Johnson in 2006, Ian Cole in ‘07, Alex Pietrangelo in ‘08 and David Rundblad and Brett Ponich in ‘09.

With the 14th pick in this week’s NHL draft, which begins with the first round at 6 p.m. (St. Louis time) Friday in Los Angeles, the Blues aren’t expected to be in the running for another defenseman in the first round.

Steve Yzerman’s No-Trade Assurance Relaxes Lecavalier

From the St. Pete Times’ Damian Cristodero:

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has sent a message to Vinny Lecavalier.

“We’re going to challenge him to be better,” Yzerman said.

But Yzerman also apparently assured the captain, who is coming off two disappointing seasons, he still is part of the plan.

“I’m not going to go out and start shopping Vinny Lecavalier around,” Yzerman said recently at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Ex-Catamount Reaches Mountaintop in NHL

From the Boston Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa:

Patrick Sharp was born in Winnipeg and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario, but he’ll always be an adopted son of Burlington, Vt.

The Blackhawks alternate captain, last seen raising the Stanley Cup and partying during the homecoming parade in Chicago, spent two seasons with the Catamounts prepping his game for the pros. Appropriately, among the well-wishers texting Sharp during the finals was former Vermont assistant Damian DiGiulian, who played a significant role in bringing a Canadian youngster with a junior-style game to Hockey East.

“Very happy for him,’’ said DiGiulian, now coach at Rice Memorial Prep in South Burlington. “Great kid, great family.’’

Hamhuis Deal Might Limit Other Moves

From the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Frank Seravalli:

Hamhuis, 27, will fit firmly between Kimmo Timonen and Matt Carle on the Flyers’ defensive depth chart as a smart and patient puck mover who can also play a shutdown role against opponents’ top forwards. Hamhuis and Timonen sometimes skated together in Nashville. Hamhuis will not match Carle’s point totals but is reliable and durable, having missed just seven games over the last four seasons.

That will come at a price. Hamhuis’ deal likely will exceed the 4-year, $14 million that Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang got last summer. Holmgren and Hamhuis’ agent, Wade Arnott , are scheduled to begin negotiating today with the hopes of completing the deal before the NHL draft commences on Friday in Los Angeles.

If that happens, signing Hamhuis could limit how the Flyers round out their defense. The apparent goal was to not only strengthen the unit, which Hamhuis does, but also make it deeper. The salary cap, expected to rise about $2 million to $58.8 million, could limit its depth since restricted free agent Braydon Coburn is due a raise.

It’s Time for Dallas Stars to Reload

From the Dallas Morning News’ Mike Heika:

Taking the best player available is a pretty good strategy for any draft.

It’s especially important in the NHL, where teams take 18-year-olds and have to guess how they will develop.

So it’s understandable that the Stars have taken only two defensemen in the last 18 picks, including none last season.

There were better players, and Dallas had really gotten into the strategy of going after highly skilled forwards – a strategy that paid off with players like James Neal (33rd overall in 2005), Jamie Benn (129th in 2007), and all five of last year’s talented forwards.

Red Wings Goalie Jimmy Howard Deserves to be NHL’s Rookie of the Year

From the Detroit News’ Ted Kulfan:

At the grand old age of 26, you hope Jimmy Howard won’t be discriminated against for his age.

Howard is a finalist for the Calder Trophy, symbolizing the NHL’s rookie of the year. He’s up against Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers, 19, and Colorado forward Matt Duchene, 18, two worthy candidates. Both players are younger than Howard and neither played in the minor leagues, as Howard did for four seasons.

Howard is, without a doubt, the elder statesman in this group. The much older brother. Ancient, even.

Ken Holland Wants to Sign Wings’ Restricted Free Agents

From the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James:

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland plans to gear up talks to re-sign his restricted free agents over the coming week, but already the Wings figure to be a deep and competitive team next season.

That’s because they’re largely going to be the same team that went 16-3-2 in March and April when, for the first time all season, all their principal players were healthy.

“I like our team,” Holland said. “I think we’ve got a good mix. We’ve identified our core, and we’ve got some role players we really like, and we’re going to be deeper with Jiri Hudler coming back.”

Flyers Hope Hamhuis can Bolster Defense

From the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Dan Carchidi:

During their playoff run to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Flyers were reluctant to use their third defensive pairing.

So, in his first move of the off-season, general manager Paul Holmgren made a deal Saturday that significantly upgrades that unit, acquiring defenseman Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011 from Nashville for Ryan Parent, a little-used and frequently injured defenseman.

Now the Flyers have 11 days to sign the 6-foot-1, 209-pound Hamhuis (pronounced HAM-HOOS), who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

How Slats can Dump Brashear

From the New York Post’s Larry Brooks:

The window of opportunity is closing on Glen Sather as the general manager looks for a team to take Donald Brashear and his over-35, $1.4 million albatross of a cap charge off the Rangers’ books.

For if Sather, who told Slap Shots two weeks ago that Brashear never again would play for the Blueshirts following last year’s debacle, is going to be able to move the faded 38-year-old enforcer, his best chance is to do it this week, so the acquiring team has time to buy out Brashear by the June 30 deadline.

Look, the only conceivable way Sather will be able to move Brashear is by taking back a bad contract of greater value from a low-revenue team hovering around the cap floor. The Rangers could then bury that contract in the AHL, if necessary, while gaining $1.4M in critical cap space.

Bitterness of Trade Far in the Past as John MacLean Embraces Latest Role with Devils

From the Newark Star-Ledger’s Rich Chere:

It was a seemingly unremarkable December morning at the Meadowlands.

The Devils, off to a solid start to the 1997-98 season, had just concluded their morning skate in preparation for that night’s meeting with the St. Louis Blues at Continental Airlines Arena. But John MacLean, the franchise’s all-time scoring and games-played leader on the morning of Dec. 2, 1997, was about to drop a bombshell.

Holding court in front of his locker stall, MacLean revealed that he had asked general manager Lou Lamoriello for a trade and would not consider signing another contract with the Devils when he became an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Few Senators Fans Show up to Support Spezza

From the Canwest News Service:

Not all Jason Spezza supporters are fair-weather fans, but, judging by the size of the group that gathered Saturday on Parliament Hill, a lot of them are.

“We doubled!” organizer Louise Tremblay said when the size of the rally she had organized grew from two to four mid-afternoon.

About 20 fans, most of them wearing red Ottawa Senators jerseys, eventually trickled in to show their opposition to the rumours and criticism circulating about the oft-criticized Spezza.

NHL Draft Preview: Taylor or Tyler?

From the Toronto Sun’s Bruce Garrioch:

Will Taylor or Tyler be No. 1.?

Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini will provide the answer when he steps up the microphone Staples Center in Los Angeles Friday and announces the top selection in the NHL entry draft.

While there’s not much of a gap between Windsor Spitfires winger Taylor Hall and Plymouth Whalers centre Tyler Seguin, one is going to be the cornerstone of the Oilers’ rebuilding program.

“I believe both are going to be ready to play next year,” said Boston GM Peter Chiarelli, who will select second with a pick he acquired last year from the Maple Leafs, who got back Phil Kessel.

Kings offer assistant coaching job to John Stevens

From the Los Angeles Times:

Former Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Stevens, who was fired by the team in December, is the Kings’ choice to fill the assistant coaching vacancy created by Mark Hardy’s resignation and has been offered the job, and his hiring could be announced next week, confirmed an NHL source, who was granted anonymity because the organization is not ready to make the decision public.

Key Kings executives know Stevens well. Kings Coach Terry Murray, previously part of the Flyers’ staff, worked with Stevens in Philadelphia, and Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi and assistant GM Ron Hextall are familiar with him from their past employment in the Flyers’ organization.

From the Calgary Herald’s Vicki Hall:

Stock up on the long underwear, Calgary. Pull that giant winter parka out of the closet along with those mitts, tuque, scarf and boots.

The National Hockey League competition committee granted approval Friday for the Calgary Flames to host the Heritage Classic outdoor game Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011.

The venue? McMahon Stadium. The opposition? Michael Cammalleri and the Montreal Canadiens.

Only one formality remains: ratification by the NHL Players Association next week in Chicago.

Lars Eller looks forward to being a Montreal Canadien

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jeremy Rutherford:

Former Blue Lars Eller spoke with the Team 990 radio station in Montreal today and said that he is looking forward to playing for the Montreal Canadiens.

And he thinks it could be this season.  “What (Montreal GM Pierre Gauthier) told me was that they were happy to have gotten me in this trade,” said Eller, who went to the Habs Thursday in the trade that brought goalie Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis. “He said I have a good chance to make that Montreal team. It’s going to be up to me.

“That was my goal in St. Louis, to make that club this year. I’m going to have the same mindset coming into Montreal. I know that Montreal has a big fan base and there are big expectations for the team and the players as well. But I put pressure on myself. I see this in a positive way.”

Vinny excited about new additions, Bolts

From the Tampa Tribune’s Erik Erlendsson:

Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier’s thoughts understandably have been preoccupied of late, filled more with 3 a.m. feedings and diaper changes than hockey.

But during the past month, following the birth of daughter Victoria on May 3, Lecavalier has watched from afar as Tampa Bay has undergone an extreme makeover in the hiring of GM Steve Yzerman and head coach Guy Boucher.  Considering the events of the past two years, when things played out like a soap opera, Lecavalier is encouraged by what’s taking place with the only franchise he has known since entering the league in 1998.

“I’m very, very excited about what is happening with this organization from new ownership, to a guy like Steve Yzerman, who knows where he is going,” Lecavalier said. “He’s got a plan, he’s an honest person and comes from an organization of winners over the past 20 years and he will bring that mentality.

Taylor Hall’s dad gave prospect early edge

From the Windsor Star’s Bob Duff:

The Windsor Spitfires were in the midst of their Ontario Hockey League Hockey League playoff series against the Plymouth Whalers, and deep in the bowels of the Compuware Sports Arena, Spitfires left-winger Taylor Hall was alone and in the zone.

Headphones in his ears, one with his thought process, the object of Hall’s focus was the red road hockey ball he stickhandled feverishly back and forth with his stick.

It’s this single-minded ability to tune into the task at hand and pour his energy into the objective, added to his incredible speed, skill set and hockey smarts that leave scouts drooling over the possibility of calling Hall’s name during next week’s National Hockey League entry draft.

Bruins Closing in on Panthers Winger Nathan Horton?

From NESN.com’s James Murphy:

Well, it appears Chiarelli could already have a trade in place that would bring a current NHLer to Boston.

While the parameters of the trade are unclear at this point, a very reliable source told NESN.com on Friday that the Bruins are closing in on a trade with the Florida Panthers that would see them acquire winger Nathan Horton, who was drafted third overall by the Panthers in 2003, but in six NHL seasons, has cracked the 30-goal plateau only once and—in the eyes of fans and media—failed to reach his potential and use his 6-foot-2, 229-pound frame properly.

There were no specifics on what else may come to Boston in the deal or what the return would be to Florida, but it has been well documented that Chiarelli would love to move into the top 5-7 picks overall to get one of the top defensive prospects available, so this could be a package deal involving roster players and picks.

Off-Season Game Plan:  Chicago Blackhawks

From TSN’s Scott Cullen:

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1961, so it’s a summer for celebrating. For some, notably GM Stan Bowman, it’s going to be a summer involving tough decisions as the Blackhawks scramble to get under the salary cap.

Off-Season Game Plan looks at the championship roster and what the Blackhawks can do if they’re going to have a legitimate chance to defend their title.

Such is the nature of the salary cap world in the NHL that great young teams face a tight window of opportunity because it’s so difficult to keep an entire team together.

Fletcher: Wild won’t buy way out of NHL’s bottom

From the Associated Press:

The Minnesota Wild have a lot of work to do this summer.  They need to add promising young players, but also must improve the depth and quality of their roster. It’s a difficult place to be in the NHL, not quite good enough to contend for the Stanley Cup but also lacking the top draft picks to add elite talent and get better in a hurry the way the champion Chicago Blackhawks did with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

After missing the playoffs for the second straight year, the Wild have the ninth selection in the first round of next week’s draft.  Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said Friday he’s pleased with the amount of salary-cap space he has to make moves, more than most teams, but he insisted that’s not a blank check for free agency.

“You can’t buy your way out of the basement,” Fletcher said. “We don’t have the ability to sign five guys on July 1 at $5 million apiece, but looking at the talent pool on July 1, I would suggest that shouldn’t be our goal, too. We will patiently and methodically build this team.”

NHL takes step to penalize hits to the head

From the Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran:

A hit to the head will be a penalty — a five-minute major — next season in the NHL.

The league and the NHL Players’ Association took a huge step Friday toward ridding the game of the dreaded headshots — blindside shots, gratuitous shots and intentional shots — when the 10-member competition committee agreed on a new penalty.

“Gratuitous headshots are going to be eliminated from the game,” said veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider, one of five players on the committee. “Guys are going to be penalized if they take those shots.  “Our hope is that all the headshots are going to be taken out of the game,” he added, admitting it won’t be easy. “The game happens so quickly. There is going to be contact with the head, that’s the nature of the game. It’s the intentional shots we want to take out of the game.”

Fehr a factor in NHLPA’s cap decision

From the Globe & Mail’s James Mirtle:

One of the key issues facing the players in attendance Monday will be a vote on whether to approve the annual 5-per-cent growth factor in the NHL’s salary cap.

A year ago, the vote was close, but players pushed the cap “inflator” through for the third consecutive year. After a season of players making 18-per-cent escrow payments, however, many believe this particular decision could be the most contentious one yet.

While a majority of the player reps and agents contacted declined to comment, some said they believe another display of infighting over the vote could be a sign to Fehr that leading the union isn’t in his best interests.
