Lidstrom Out With Lower Body Injury

Nick Lidstrom did not appear after the first period in tonight’s game in Nashville.

Word is he is out for the rest of the game with a lower body injury.

edit 9:54pm, Nick did play about a minute in the 2nd period, then went to the locker room.

added 11:05pm, SnapShots has all the details and in summary, nothing major, xrays were negative and Nick could play either tomorrow or the next game.

Seems Lidstrom took a shot to the foot and had discomfort in skating.

Why Not Lidstrom For SI Sportsman of the Year

from Kostya Kennedy of Sports Illustrated,

In a parity-stricken league, Lidstrom has ensured that the Red Wings remain in a class of one, and in June he crossed into hockey’s final frontier when he became the first European captain in NHL history to hoist the Stanley Cup. “I’m very proud to be the first,” he said, and in the next breath, “I’m very proud of the whole team too.”

What makes Lidstrom so Sportsman-like is, well, his sportsmanship: his humility, his professionalism. He is intuitive on the ice and equally so in the locker room. Earlier this year Babcock told me that he had never coached player this good. “In what way?” I asked. Replied Babcock: “In any way you can think of.”

Broken Nose For Lidstrom

The AP via Mlive reports Nick Lidstrom suffered a broken nose last night.

Update 2:44pm ET: Via TSN:

Nicklas Lidstrom suffered a broken nose on Wednesday night and the Red Wings expect him miss at least three games, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Head coach Mike Babcock spoke to the newspaper on Thursday morning regarding the injury to his captain.

“He’s got a broken nose, but everything’s fine,” Babcock told the Free Press. “I mean, he got hit in the head with a puck, and so he’s not feeling good today - he didn’t even come to the rink today; he’ll be back here tomorrow and then he’ll be rolling in no time.”

Harvey vs. Lidstrom

from Greatest Hockey Legends,

Now, on to Doug’s question. Is Nicklas Lidstrom better than Doug Harvey?

I think history tends to nicely accept that Doug Harvey is the second best defenseman of all time, behind Bobby Orr, of course. In fact, most of the so called experts tend to place Harvey in top ten players of all time, regardless of position....

Doug Harvey was the epitome of hockey grace, and one of the few players in hockey history that could truly take control of a game all by himself.

Now that is awfully hard to compete against. Lidstrom is catching up, with more seasons ahead. He’s got 4 Stanley Cup championships and 6 Norris Trophies. His career offensive numbers dwarf Harvey’s, mind you that is due much to the very different eras each played in. Both are classic and near flawless defenders and both are dominant at both ends of the ice.

Lidstrom Changed The European Thinking

from Michael Farber at Sports Illustrated,

Indeed the most vocal that Lidstrom became during this year’s playoff run was before Game 6 of the Western Conference finals, after Detroit had lost two straight to the Dallas Stars. According to Cleary, Lidstrom said, “O.K., boys, this is going to be a good night for us. Do what we do, boys. Just believe in ourselves, and let’s not be nervous.” The Red Wings won 4-1 to clinch the series. Lidstrom speaks the hockey idiom in an English so lightly accented that veteran fourth-liner Kirk Maltby said he “found it weird” when Tomas Holmstrom joined the team in 1996 and Maltby heard Lidstrom speaking Swedish for the first time.

Questions for Lidstrom, Franzen and Osgood

A short Q&A session with the media, talking with Detroit Red Wings players Nicklas Lidstrom, Johan Franzen and Chris Osgood.

Q. Chris, 6?0 an incredible run here in the playoffs. Where do you point the finger? Why have you had such success?

CHRIS OSGOOD: In two parts I’ll answer. Personally, just doing the right things in practice with Jim Bedard and staying ready. Even when I wasn’t playing, I felt confident, even before I went in that I could do the job. Just being ready so I wasn’t standing there doubting myself whatsoever.

NHL Conference Call with Nick Lidstrom

Earlier today, the NHL provided Detroit Red Wings Captain Nicklas Lidstrom to the media on a national conference call.  Nick was named as a finalist for the Norris Trophy this morning—the ninth time in ten seasons he has been nominated, and he’s a five-time winner of the award.

Here is the transcript of the Q&A session.

Q. I wanted to know whether No. 6 would mean something for you. Obviously you tied Ray Bourque last year, but inching closer to a guy like Doug Harvey with No. 6; he’s got seven.

The Power Of Lidstrom

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,

One area where Lidstrom excels and which is frequently undervalued is his ability to deftly complete tape-to-tape first passes out of the defensive zone, the move that shifts the attack into gear.

With Lidstrom in the lineup, the club averages 3.2 goals per game. Without him, that percentage dropped to 2.3 tallies a night.

The power play registered six times in 34 opportunities minus Lidstrom, but was good for three goals Sunday, with Lidstrom, armed with one of the league’s deadliest and most accurate point shots, figuring directly in two of the tallies.

Lidstrom Not Used To This Routine

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via the Globe and Mail,

He’s been thrown off his routine — which is everything to a hockey player — but at least hasn’t thrown off the family household.

“I think my wife has actually enjoyed it, just helping out with the kids a little bit more, taking them to their hockey practices and whatnot,” said Lidstrom. “She’s liked having me around a bit more.

“I don’t know if it goes on for another week if she’ll change her mind, though.”

Despite the injury, Lidstrom may very well remain the odds-on favourite to capture a sixth career Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman.

Lidstrom On Course To Return In Two Weeks

from Ansar Khan at Mlive,

There is apparently an Internet rumor floating around that claims Nicklas Lidstrom’s injury is more serious than the Red Wings are letting on. It states Lidstrom will miss two months because of a sprained MCL and a concussion.

Here’s what Wings coach Mike Babcock said about it after Friday’s game: “We think he’s two weeks (away), max. He’s feeling way better already, so that’s a positive thing for us.’’

more on the Wings…

That is not even a rumor Ansar, but considering where it came from, well, let’s just say, you should question everything that comes from that website.

Wait- A Long Four Letter Word

from Bruce MacLeod of Red Wings Corner,

Tonight will be spent as most Red Wings fans will, wondering what tomorrow morning’s MRI would reveal about Nicklas Lidstrom’s ailing right knee. Lidstrom was knocked woozy, Monday in Denver, when Avalanche forward Ian Laperriere ran the Detroit captain hard into the boards. Laperriere’s forearm landed on Lidstrom’s jaw and the defenseman bounced back off the boards.
(That was a dirty hit, by the way. Any time a player gets a forearms up on another player’s jaw and slams him against the boards, it’s dirty. It might have been accidental, but Laperriere sure didn’t act like it was.)

Lidstrom Out

Nick Lidstrom was hit by Ian Laperriere around the five minute mark in the first period.  Versus is reporting a knee injury, no report from Detroit radio.

He was groggy when he left the ice and was escorted to the lockerroom.

This is a pretty hot topic in the KK chatroom right now.

added 9:07pm, According to Wings radio, slight knee injury to Lidstrom.

The Lidstrom For MVP Campaign

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

It’s about quiet brilliance. Being, to knock off the old Johnny Rodgers nickname, an ordinary superstar.

His Red Wings are running away with the NHL regular season, by far the best team in the opening four months with a shot – not a great shot, but still more than a mathematical possibility – at breaking league records for wins and points in a single season.

Lidstrom is the best player on the best team. So shouldn’t an awful lot more people be making an awful lot more noise about Lidstrom winning his first Hart Trophy as league MVP this season?

“I have no idea why Nick Lidstrom hasn’t won a Hart already,” said an exasperated Detroit GM Ken Holland. “I just don’t know what people are watching. I mean, he doesn’t win because why, he’s not a good quote?”

more

In the last few days there seems to be numerous Lidstrom for MVP stories and I wonder who is behind this talk.  It is not like the Wings to promote an individual player, but a few weeks ago on local Detroit radio, Scotty Bowman was asked about Lidstrom.  Scotty praised Nick and and said it was up to the media to start the Lidstrom for MVP campaign.  Looks like they were listening or Bowman is bending some ears with a few well placed phone calls.

Feeling A Bit “Strom’d” Out

from the Detroit News,

In the middle of presidential campaign season, coach Mike Babcock did some lobbying of his own Monday in the Red Wings locker room.

The candidate Babcock was backing was Nicklas Lidstrom.

continued

from TSN,

Well, you can add another can’t-miss player for the mix, but the here’s the kicker - all 30 NHL teams missed out on him a while ago. His name is Fabian Brunnstrom, and he’s one of the most coveted young players not playing in the National Hockey League.

Simply The Best

from Brian Costello of the Hockey News,

The debate was interesting, but not terribly long when we were determining The Hockey News cover feature for our European issue, due to come out next week.

Nicklas Lidstrom is our cover boy, plain and simple. The best European-trained player ever in the NHL.

A case was made for Jaromir Jagr, the five-time scoring champion and destined to be the top-scoring European for long time to come. Jari Kurri had a lot of support, as did Dominik Hasek. But the more we studied the facts and figures, the more it became obvious.

Nick The Machine

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The great ones make a hard game look ridiculously easy.

Gretzky. Orr. Mario. Howe. Beliveau. Lafleur.

You can add Nick Lidstrom to that pantheon.

Since Orr retired 31 years ago because his knees gave out, Lidstrom and Ray Bourque have been hockey’s pre-eminent defencemen. Paul Coffey, who had 1500 points, was close. So was Denis Potvin, a mean customer. Chris Chelios, Larry Robinson and Scott Niedermayer have a following as game-managers. But, Lidstrom, who’s remarkably only missed 22 of 1,201 total games (some forced to rest him for the playoffs) is, in his 16th NHL season, a machine.

How Much Longer For Lidstrom

from Evan Grossman of NHL.com,

Lidstrom won his fifth Norris Trophy last season as the NHL’s best defenseman, and he’s in the final season of his contract with the Red Wings. But if General Manager Ken Holland has his way, Lidstrom will be back for another decade in Hockeytown, perhaps long enough to equal Bobby Orr’s record of eight Norris Trophies.

“I hope about another 10 years,” Holland said when asked how long he hopes Lidstrom will play. “I think Nick, he’s 37, 38 years of age. Certainly the superstars, it appears to me, can play into their early 40s. Steve Yzerman was a real good player for us in his late 30s; unfortunately, injury caught up to him. Chris Chelios at the age of 45 is still going strong....”
